In 2001, when I listened to lateralus I didn’t read & study music sheets & lyrics the first listen. I sat in a dark room and felt the music as it should be experienced.

"Learn to swim" is referring to all of the inhabitants of Los Angeles having to learn to swim as the entire part of the continent tears in the rift and drowns down into the ocean.

Bill Hicks - Arizona Bay , 1997 Comedy Album released posthumously, is a big inspiration for this tune. If I remember right, Bill and Maynard were friends. Nice reacion.Peace!

It’s a song about the cleansing of the US, primarily via the loss of the west coast to flooding and earthquake. Hence the chorus ‘Learn to swim’ and references to ‘Arizona Bay’ (Arizona now being the new west coast and birding the Pacific Ocean)
Tool songs dont impact you right away on the first listen. They sometimes take many many listens for you to wrap your head around to completely and fully appreciate.
The album Aenima is gold. It's a dark side of the moon type album where it's best listened to front to back without stopping. Their next album, Lateralus, has a lot of tight tracks on it as well. Their ensemble of instrumentalists in their group Tool are all through the roof technically and creative-wise. Their drummer, Danny Carey, is considered by many drummers and rock musicians to be one of the best rock drummers of all-time up there with Neil Peart from RUSH.

The name Aenima is a joke and play on two words Animus which is the spirit and Enema which is when you flush your colon out with water to clean. Meaning the album and song is a spiritual cleansing. Please it sounds cool. He wants Mother Nature to flush CA and LA down the metaphoric toilet

ON the original CD album Jacket, you could remove the artwork and fold it, then place it back facing outward and the plastic cover had corrugated lines, that made the image change, which is of California. And when you move the image the entire coast of Los Angeles would disappear into the sea! An Enima, a colon cleansing of one of Earths most abominable cities.

Appreciate you guys. Great Tool reactions. Reccomendatiins - they are heavy songs, but if you want a song that deals with grief and love, check out Wings for Marie pt.1/2. If you are looking to start down the spiral path, I would recommend Parabol/Parabola. As other have mentioned, if you want to see the drummer, Danny Carey, go wild, pull up the Pneuma drum cam.

Tool reminds me of King Crimson. You should check them out sometime, 21st Century Schizoid Man or Lark's Tongue in Aspic part 3, or ? I think Tool's drummer was touring w/ part of King Crimson and Steve Vai playing early 80's vintage King Crimson (Discipline, Elephant Talk).
