As other commenters have said, this song was inspired Maynard's mother, Judith who was paralyzed and suffered greatly, but never gave up her Christian faith. To add a little context, my understanding is that this isn't just Maynard being angry at God. Rather, the "Christian" community that Judith belonged to - the people that should have loved and supported her in her time of need - turned their back on her, and blamed her for her own condition, reasoning that surely it must have been a punishment of her own sins. That sort of hypocrisy unsurprisingly poisoned Maynard's attitude toward organized religion.
Yes, this is it. He has said that he was angry at both his mom for not losing faith and putting up with the appalling way in which her Church community treated her, and a that community itself for being self-righteous assholes and treating his mother poorly.
I can’t really say I blame him. I went through it earlier this year when I had to have major surgery. The people who I thought would at least try to help my mom with some housekeeping since I couldn’t. Or even call to see how I was doing after having an entire set of organs removed. People from our last church, possibly my last church period, didn’t do what they said they would do. “Call me if you need anything” turned out to be a bunch of lies.
My mother almost killed her liver with meth, alcohol, and Tylenol. Yellow eyes. I was forced to go to church and then praying for my mom but not the doctors. It took another ten years to get her sober.
Unfortunately many people hide under Christianity. He is wrong for blaming God and I hope one day he understands that it was the liars of what sounds like a cult. Christianity isn't a church. If they are doing misdeeds then they are liars and shouldn't be trusted. If their churches have lots of money, but never helps out their people. God doesn't like them either.

THANK YOU! For bringing this out! Maynard was for the longest time so angry at God, I recently read a statment that said he has forgiven and accepted some of his mothers beliefs... IDK if its accurate? BUT! I hope so!
Hey BP thanks for sharing about your first two children. Your very brave to share that with the world man. I know you will see them later. Much Love brother.🙏
I broke my back in 2010 and am myself a Christian. This song brought me back from the edge of a very dark time during my recovery. When I was and had nothing… how the song translates to me even in anger is yeah sure, even for me, f’ed up and broken, hateful and rage-full. I could not see my life now but God was my God even in that darkness. Now I’m a stay at home dad to 5 amazing kids, married a Dr. who after meeting me decided that was he goal and while I took care of the kids she achieved her dreams and I fulfilled mine. Our oldest is a marine the second a soldier, being broken gave me the opportunity to raise men in a time when men are needed. I broke my back and was deemed permanently irreversibly disabled and I was so ignorant, arrogant, and untouchable it took almost dying to find my true path. Growing up I always admired my mom and thought her role was the most important in a family, raising the kids, that’s ultimately what I was called to do. But rage-singing this song in literal darkness in unspeakable pain crying screaming it really helped me through those times.
@ I think he did, I was a proud arrogant untouchable person. I believed that was gods gift to me. I had to lose everything to realize my true strength and value, my hatred toward God was literally me mourning the loss of my perceived strength and understanding I had to trust god’s plan and my strength was in fact a stumbling block to that. I believe god saved me in that time. But that’s just what I believe.
Judith is Maynard's mother's middle name. She had an aneurysm that left her paralyzed. She was very devout while he questioned everything about religion after this. Tool's Wings for Marie and 10,000 days is a beautiful tribute to her that almost sounds like he's come to peace with this. If you choose to listen to them, you must do it together. That's how they are supposed to be heard.
It's incredible how Maynard is able to pull people into his songs and make them feel or relive similar emotions to what he feeling in the songs themselves. Wings for Marie gets me everytime. You can just tell that he's OK with letting go but that doesn't make the pain go away
Ive probably watched over 100 of your reactions.. this is hands down the best one ive seen yet. You nailed it right off the bat with maynard.. and pretty much the entire basis of the song.

Maynard is the singer in 3 bands (aside form features): Tool, A Perfect Circle, Puscifer Fun fact, he also voiced the Pig in "Three Little Pigs" by the band Green Jello (and Danny from Tool played Drums)
This is in fact Maynard! Judith is the name of Maynard's mother. You really nailed it with your guess on the overall meaning/themes. She was paralyzed by a stroke when he was only 11 and remained that way for the remaining 27 years of her life. He's struggled for many years with anger towards God and his disbelief that she remained devoutly faithful. He's shouting his anger and despair in this song, making allusions to the soldier who drove the spear into Jesus' side on the cross, saying she didn't do anything like that, she didn't do anything to deserve this, so why? And if she believes God did this to her, then how can she still praise him? It's the anguish of a child asking that age old philosophical question of "If there is a loving and caring God, why do bad things happen to good people?" It's a powerful and painful song, and he has struggled with faith for a long time because of this. There are several more Tool songs that explore specifically his mother and feelings about that more: Wings for Marie (Pt. 1) and 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2). And as stated in another comment, you can see a theme across certain songs within the Tool discography over the years concerning his journey with faith in general.
People who are as "intelligent" as Maynard blow my mind. How can people intentional ignore the fact that according to the Bible, this world is nothing but pain. AND only lasts the blink of an eye for everyone. Period. The NEXT world is heaven. There will be no suffering there. So... Focus on the eye blink part, and ignore eternity because we are so short sighted? Weird man. Weird.
@@eriklarson9137 Not trying to be flippant, but people as "intelligent" as Maynard (as well as introspective) typically don't believe in God in the first place, so they couldn't care less about what the Bible says about this or the next world (at least as far as it applies to finding truth). And, of course, people focus on the eye-blink part, because that's all they have experience with. With no credible evidence of either an afterlife nor its nature, it is a continuous act of foolishness to behave otherwise (even if an afterlife didn't exist).
Can u imagine!? His mom suffered in pain for 10,000 days! 30yrs n she was all he had! N he had to eventually pull her plug n finally let her go to get her wings! (album title 10,000 days + songs on it Wings for Marie pt 1 +2 Judith Marie) wen her congregation turned n said she must've been a bad sinner to receive such long suffering! She WAS an Angel n they cudn't hold a candle to her according to him. BUT OMG he wrote a song called ORESTES w/a Perfect Circle I beg u2do regarding the Greek mythological figure who had to kill his mother to avenge his father as per custom. The song is gorgeous!! Maynard really shines on it
Thank you, I absolutely agree about Orestes! 💯 Especially the live version from Stone & Echo. That song, for me, is hands down the most perfect song of all time. Billy Howerdel’s composition is flawless and Maynard’s vocals beautifully added the finishing touches.
@@Leah.says.the.things Have u ever had the chance to see TOOL or P.C?? I wish I knew about them wen Maynard was in his prime vocals in the 90's. I'm actually really bouncing around lately if 3 Libras .........No. Orestes is still my favorite but 3 Libras close 2nd. Lol, I just realized!!? P.C. is easier to pick a favorite song much easier than a TOOL song! But if u hv 1 I'd love to know. Thanks Leah......(Leah is wat my family called me lol)
This is one of the sadest stories of my life. Way back in the day when APC was first on the scene they were on tour with NIN. At roommate had tickets but no ride so bought me and the bf tickets to go see the show in exchange for the ride. I hated NIN and didn't know anything about APC... I hated the whole night.... Then I become a fan and just spend years regretting the fact that I completely wasted that night. I can't remember anything about the show. 😢
@@mandaly42 O noooo! Nothing?? I guess it's hard to remember anythg if u don't know a single song? Lol, I'm sorry. That truly does suck! Don't blame u about NIN their a bit "dark." I heard the song the OUTSIDER is about Trent? Or Marilyn Manson?
It took me like 9 years before i figured out what the song was about. You nailed it on the first listen with no back story. This was their first single.
If you have faith, this song will shock you at first glance. Once you understand the full story and follow Maynards healing through music you see the big picture that so many have and continue to face in real life. This is an extremely cathartic song that i absolutely adore. It's necessary.
I lost my mother in December, and I have not been able to really cry. I know she is with our Lord, and I can't be mad about that. I miss her like crazy, though. I guess I could understand feeling this way sort of, but my faith won't allow that. I am glad you found your way back, BP.
Thank you, BP, for your thoughtful, insightful, compassionate response to this song and the powerful, deep issues you explored. Thank you Also to the commenters who provided really great insight and varied perspectives. ❤❤❤
Should check out TooL -Wings for Marie pt1. And 10,000 days pt 2 together, it's about his mother too but he comes to terms with and praises her faith and her loyalty to her beliefs, and these 2 tracks he accepts and tributes her passing. For anyone who has lost a mother it hits so powerfully beautiful especially if they're believers
You gotta check out Tools Wings for Marie pt 1 and 2 together..you should do the .lyric video... it's such a beautiful tribute to Maynard's mom Judith Marie...
I've loved this song for years and you speaking on your own losses and the way your faith was tested is everything. I'm just sitting here glad for the way your life has worked out for the better. Even the most faithful can experience pain so powerful that they doubt. You speaking from that understanding and empathy is powerful.
Maynard is the lead vocals, writer and composer for A perfect circle, TOOL and and band called, puscifier. Which are the 3 states of his mind, APC is his pain, TOOL is his madness and the art of his mind and Puscifier is his depravity. Even though he does transfer some lyrics from one project to another.
My 12 year old son Rory died 5 years ago October just gone. Abandoned by god is how I've felt. My son suffered. I just wanted to say a huge big love to you and your wife in your loss. Ill light a candle for them both. ❤
I appreciate your brutal honesty, and your humbleness..I will check out your music soon, thanks for the journey, great reactions...I love the process your mind works, I love tool, and perfect circle, great choices..The lead singer is tool, and perfect circle/..Deep ending on this reaction..God Bless You..
I love the way you chose this based on a Tool playlist recommendation, then come to find out it is Maynard with another group of incredibly talented musicians making terrific music. The hole gets deeper. Great stuff as always bro. 40!
Hey mate, I'm sorry for the losses you have endured. But I'm so happy that you have two beautiful little ones now. My wife suffers from endo and was told she would never have children until one day they said if you ever can, the time is now. We were lucky and now I have a beautiful 6yo son. Unfortunately my mother has been sick since I was very young. And I really understand the anger in this song. I personally am no longer religious after having it shoved down my throat as a child. But having said that, I don't judge anyone. If it works for you, I'm happy that you're happy.
Judith was Maynards mother. Your spot on on all of this. Please check out The Warning- Dust To Dust/Dull Knives live at The Pepsi Center. You haven't experienced the full experience of the sisters yet.
Great reaction! At first I thought wow he really should have done his research on this one but after watching the reaction I'm glad you didn't because it made the reaction so much more real. I'm religious also and a song like this brings up a lot of emotions and sparks some great conversations. Such a great song even if you don't agree with the message.
I have one of my kids doing this now. I went from Superman to a wheelchair in 4 days thanks to a virus. Mad at the world and trying to understand. I’ve been through physical things and had to come back. Had to let my kids see me not give up. But this one may have done it. All I can do is push and how she sees it. And keep telling her God is why I’m here, not why I got sick. It’s definitely a fight.
Beautiful reaction man, thanks for sharing all of that. That got me to hit that subscribe button quick. I'm hoping to hear more Tool reactions from you. I'm 100% positive you will continue the love Maynard songwriting
It’s cool to see someone hear this song for the first time in 2024 For a lot of us who were into heavy music back in 2000 , this song kinda just became a “radio song”. It was on radio stations constantly for years. It was always a good song, but it’s cool to see someone enjoy it, without any of the preconceived thoughts about it being “radio rock”
Paz!!! Keep that look up girl!!! Love the Paz. Check her out with the loop pedal in Venus in Furs! First two albums are killer for A Perfect Circle! Seen'em 13 times! Just caught him with Primus and Puscifer a few months ago.
I’m sure people have said this but Judith was his mother. This is Maynard from TOOL. He wrote a TOOL song about his mother as well called 10,000 Days which is also intense. A Perfect Circle was a side project and I saw them live - incredible.
First, you are correct in suspecting that Maynard James Keenan is the lead singer of both Tool and A Perfect Circle, he's also lead singer if another band that I highly recommend you check out called Puscifer. Second, he wrote this song during a time of anger and grief as he was frustrated with his mother's (Judith Marie) unwavering faith in spite of her becoming paralyzed from a stroke when he was 11 years old. There are a few other song that he wrote about his mother but to truly understand him and his journey through his grief when she passed away after being paralyzed for 10,000 days (about 30 years) you need to hear Wings For Marie and 10,000 Days which are both Tool songs. They go together and should be listened to back to back at the same time and you'll get to see that he comes to terms with faith. He himself may or may not remain an atheist but he understands a person's faith at that point.
I don't know about anyone else, but every time I hear that ending part where they all come in and harmonize the you, and maynard gives that little ride, i get goosebumps.
I loved this reaction and like the fact that it was a raw reaction with no idea what you were about to get into. You are a very emotionally intelligent person to pick up on what was being portrayed on a first listen. The best art is done with raw emotions. One may change how they feel over time, but that doesn't take away from the experience you once had as a Human Being. Great art captures that moment and is unapologetic about it. Its going to connect with someone experiencing the same pain and help them get to the other side of it, just like the art does for the artist. This was a favorite of mine as a teenager when I was experiencing a crisis of faith. I had the same reaction of "This is Blasphemy" but it was so beautiful that I didn't care.
Love you, BP! You have an amazing and beautiful family. Some of us have also been through stuff that made us question our beliefs. Yet, we still hold to them. Keep holding to yours. You’ll get to see your still born kids in the future. God and I butt heads at times. But, I still believe. I also was with some friends shortly after their still born child was born. That day will never leave me.
I had no idea what this was about when I first heard it but looking at the year it sounded very inspirational. Not a surprise with Maynard. Reading what it was about though and listening again it's hard to not choke up about it. He is singing from a deeply painful and personal place here.
When you say “I had faith I would …” and that’s what got you through that really hard time… for me, I hear that and see that as you believing in yourself, you did pulled yourself together and moved forward, you do that, you deserve credit… I feel prayer as people looking inward and connecting more deeply with themself.
Once again. You are exactly right. Well done my man. Wings for Marie is the TooL version of Judith. You can hear the faith crawling back in that suite.
An old roommate needed a ride to see a NIN concert so bought me a ticket and A Perfect Circle opened for them. It was before I was a fan and I hated NIN so had the worst night...if I had only known back then how much I would come to love this band...such a regret.
A perfect circle is a super group of individuals that have other bands and I think they all bring their own style of music to their music in this side project called a perfect circle
Good sir. There is a catalog of music from all three of Maynard's bands. He has songs that greatly shift from anger to acceptance in all three of his bands. It's a deep dive and its worth listening to. Tool's "Jimmy, "The Patient, "Wings for Marie part 1 and 2, and A Perfect Circle's "Judith. His band Puscifer has song called "momma sed'. The songs Wings for Marie part 1 and 2....man...incredible.
Beautiful reaction and powerful. Your story brought me nearly to tears. I can relate. Lost my 1st son (still born) and had one of my twins assaulted in a foster home who soon afterwards died in my arms in the hospital. I did not have much faith in my life. It is still a work in progress for me. But I'm hoping to get there one day.
What you had to say between the song, hit me REALLY hard. I have, at times screamed to the skies for God to take my life. THANKFULLY! Didnt happen and I can keep trying, keep overcoming, keep doing what it takes to make life better. BUT! Sometimes it's like that... There is an old Garth Brooks song, where he says, "Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers". So, I'm glad you're still here too!
A Perfect Circle is the guitar player Billy Howardel's creation. He was a guitar tech for a lot of bands, including Nine Inch nails and Tool. He got Maynard (the singer for Tool) to come in and sing for him. And if I remember correctly. The drummer for their first album is also the drummer for Tool. Also, their first album Mer De Noms is AMAZING!.
There's a trilogy of songs (arguably a tetralogy) written by Maynard all about his complicated relationship with his mother, Judith. 1. Tool's "Jimmy" 2. this song, A Perfect Circle's "Judith" 3. Tool again, with the 2 song suite from the album 10,000 Days, "Wings for Marie (Pt 1)" and 10,000 Days (Wings Pt 2)" They delve into his journey to understand and eventually accept her faith, and to deal with his anger and disappointment.
Judith is about Maynerds mom Judith. She was very faithful and watching her suffer and die, really shook him and his fait! He is also Tool's vocalist, and Pucifer
Wow, I lost my Mom in 2010 as well. It was about six months after I got married. She and I were super close and my hero. She was the first of anyone who meant anything to me who passed. It started a spiral downward for me too. However, I'd already gone through the question my Faith stage so during this round I knew He was always with me and or carrying me! ❤
I'm sorry to hear of your losses.... and you and your family are in my prayers! I understand questioning faith! I was all but killed in a car wreck when I was 16! Suffered a severe TBI (brain injury)! Prior to this, I was a star gymnast, a cheerleader, a bass player in a band, leader of a car club,,..and much more! Of course I questioned, "Why me," for a while....but, then I began asking...."Why not me?" It humbled me very much! I'm actually very thankful for my injury and my strength in my recovery! You're never really %100 recovered from a brain injury, and I still have my good and bad days 26 years later, but I'm still alive!
Brother I’m the same my amazing wife had to have our boy c sectioned out at 8 months and had breathing complications straight away he fought hard for 1 and half hrs .I was called in with minutes left to be with him in his last minutes cause they ruptured his throat when trying to incubate him .the state I seen my amazing baby boy in no parent should have to see only saving grace was he didn’t go alone he had his daddy with him .that day I lost my faith I gave up didn’t care anymore ,thankfully we still had a 2 year old at home who needed us .slowing my faith is coming back ,I thankfully now 7 years on have a amazing daughter ❤,bereaved parents stay strong much love from New Zealand
There are several songs related to his Mother. Jimmy, The Patient, Wings for Marie, 10,000 Days. The last 2 are really deep and need to be played as 1.
As always o love your reaction and insight This song he’s angry at everything, his mum was paralysed for years and finally passed He was angry that god didn’t help, that she always believed whilst going through it, that he friends in the church didn’t help or support her and at himself BUT he has another song (2 songs together) Called Wings of Marie which is just such a Beautiful song about her faith and power because she’s a believer through all the hardships she faces
Judith was his mother. She had a stroke and survived, but was left paralyzed. Instead of questioning her faith, she doubled down on it. Maynard, who disagreed with his mother's faith already, grew angry about that...and this song was the result.
As other commenters have said, this song was inspired Maynard's mother, Judith who was paralyzed and suffered greatly, but never gave up her Christian faith.
Powerful message my man. Thank you for reacting to this and sharing your experiences. Keep em coming. Spiral out my friend.
Maynard really shines on it
Love Orestes.
3 Libras is one of my favorite songs by A Perfect Circle and yes that is Maynard from Tool. He's amazing.
Love this one!!!! I appreciate your personal take on this one. So far this is my favorite reaction video you've done.
Highly anticipating your reaction to Wings for Marie part 1 and 2. But some caution...it's gonna hit. Big Love BP!
It took me like 9 years before i figured out what the song was about. You nailed it on the first listen with no back story. This was their first single.
My favorite APC song
If you have faith, this song will shock you at first glance. Once you understand the full story and follow Maynards healing through music you see the big picture that so many have and continue to face in real life. This is an extremely cathartic song that i absolutely adore. It's necessary.
I love this song! Another great one from the same album is 3 Libras!
BP as always, Thank you for your insight and honesty in your reactions. Thank you for sharing with us such a personal struggle in your life.
Absolutely. You will really enjoy the evolution
Sending you so much love and I hope you keep the faith 💜💙
I appreciate you getting so personal on this one man. So glad to hear your family is doing well.
I've loved this song for years and you speaking on your own losses and the way your faith was tested is everything. I'm just sitting here glad for the way your life has worked out for the better. Even the most faithful can experience pain so powerful that they doubt. You speaking from that understanding and empathy is powerful.
GREAT REACTION... Best one so far! Very insightful...
Oh geez, I'm so sorry for your loss.
@kimmycupreacts thank you ❤️
“Three month year old” is the most three month old parent sentence ever, and as a father of 4, I’m about it. 😂😂
Damn man, i am soooo sorry to hear of your two babies.
Horrific things to go through.
😢
I appreciate your brutal honesty, and your humbleness..I will check out your music soon, thanks for the journey, great reactions...I love the process your mind works, I love tool, and perfect circle, great choices..The lead singer is tool, and perfect circle/..Deep ending on this reaction..God Bless You..
You had it! Perfect Circle is Maynard other band with Josh Freese (Weezer, Foo Fighters- recently) as the drummer total super group.
I love the way you chose this based on a Tool playlist recommendation, then come to find out it is Maynard with another group of incredibly talented musicians making terrific music. The hole gets deeper. Great stuff as always bro. 40!
You wanna hear the sequel to this song (in a way) listen to Tool 10,000 days pt1 and 2
Thank you for sharing your heartfelt story. I'm happy for you now.
#NailedIt! Maynard is the lead vocalist on this track. Also lead vocalist for Puscifer (and Tool). 👍
One of my all-time favorite songs!! Love A Perfect Circle. Great message. I always enjoy quality blasphemy.
Judith was Maynards mother. Your spot on on all of this.
Please check out The Warning- Dust To Dust/Dull Knives live at The Pepsi Center. You haven't experienced the full experience of the sisters yet.
Oh yeah, I love The Warning! Those sisters really rock!!!
Thank you for opening up about your experiences. You have a beautiful soul my friend
It’s cool to see someone hear this song for the first time in 2024
For a lot of us who were into heavy music back in 2000 , this song kinda just became a “radio song”.
This song gives some feels for sure, thanks for sharing your thoughts BP. This song also contributed to some hearing problems I now have today :p
When Paz puts her hair up...epic moment for an epic song❤❤
Love you, BP! You have an amazing and beautiful family. Some of us have also been through stuff that made us question our beliefs. Yet, we still hold to them. Keep holding to yours. You’ll get to see your still born kids in the future. God and I butt heads at times. But, I still believe. I also was with some friends shortly after their still born child was born. That day will never leave me.
Yes, Maynard is the lead singer of Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer.
Brother I am so sorry for your losses. God bless you and your beautiful family! 💗
A Perfect Circle - 3 Libras.
This song really showcases Maynard's voice.
BRAVO!! U recognized Rexonrs voice that’s amazing that u knew that without knowing that
Man keep going on this band. So many good tracks. It's as important as tool
Ohhhh I am so glad you have reviewed A Perfect Circle and this is their best ever song, very well overplayed on my playlists
It was Tim Alexander, the drummer for Primus. Also of note is Paz Lenchantin from the Pixies and Josh Freese, current drummer for Foo Fighters.
@@benh59 YES! that's who it was.
3 Libras! Oh please, it's beautiful!
There's a trilogy of songs (arguably a tetralogy) written by Maynard all about his complicated relationship with his mother, Judith.
1. Tool's "Jimmy"
2. this song, A Perfect Circle's "Judith"
3. Tool again, with the 2 song suite from the album 10,000 Days, "Wings for Marie (Pt 1)" and 10,000 Days (Wings Pt 2)"
They delve into his journey to understand and eventually accept her faith, and to deal with his anger and disappointment.
BTW, the Tool Army is massive and we will be here for every second if you were to do the full discography. Maybe a Tool Tuesday? (Hint, hint)😉
Judith is about Maynerds mom Judith. She was very faithful and watching her suffer and die, really shook him and his fait! He is also Tool's vocalist, and Pucifer
The leader singer/lyricist from Tool is also the lead singer/lyricist of the bands A Perfect Circle and Pusicer.
As a Maynard enjoyer this made me smile.
As always o love your reaction and insight
This song he’s angry at everything, his mum was paralysed for years and finally passed
He was angry that god didn’t help, that she always believed whilst going through it, that he friends in the church didn’t help or support her and at himself
BUT he has another song (2 songs together) Called Wings of Marie which is just such a Beautiful song about her faith and power because she’s a believer through all the hardships she faces
Also, thank you for telling us about your children, they will live on forever through you, your wife and the love you talk about them with
Bro you gotta do wings for Marie and 10,000 days and get the whole story
One of my favorite bands listened to them for over almost 20 years
Judith was his mother. She had a stroke and survived, but was left paralyzed. Instead of questioning her faith, she doubled down on it. Maynard, who disagreed with his mother's faith already, grew angry about that...and this song was the result.
dude you're crushing this reaction. I'm a 46 y/o guitarist who was a huge tool APC fan, have seen both bands many many times. I dig your channel
His mom. By now, you know the singer is Maynard ☮️💜✨️
As a father of 2, I'm very sorry to hear about your son, god bless man.
Spot on on this one all around BP. Judith was mom.
Nailed it!
👍 for keeping it real and personal. Isn't music amazing! Such a thought provoking and cathartic experience.
