- Black Friday brought us a new product in the IlluminEssence line, but it is a much cheaper product than its siblings.

It's Black Friday, and that means some new products are available. This year, Monster has made available a new SKU in its IlluminEssence product line - a single LED strip. We've reviewed all of the other products, and expected that this new SKU would work the same way. But, after thousands of views in a few hours and dozens of comments, it was clear that we were wrong. So, we braved the crowds and headed to Walmart to purchase the last unit in our local store so we could try it out.
Unfortunately, this new SKU was definitely produced separately from the standard SKUs. The packaging is slightly different, and the manual is completely different. In this case, the product seems to be defective. We were able to power it on (by plugging it in), but could not get the included remote to work with it, even after following the pairing instructions. We also weren't able to use one of our working remotes with the new strip. There is definitely a problem and you are NOT CRAZY!

They told me that the item doesn’t have a manufacturer’s warranty so they can’t do anything other than return to the retailer

I’ve tried this without success. I've tried a variety of timings and nothing has worked thus far. Plugged the same lights into my other brand LED strip lights IR controlled power adapter and they work, so it must be the controller receiver that is defective?

Kade Massey Only to find the only working build number. We've been told that a lot of people have had success holding the remote directly in contact with the control unit.
I bought these on Black Friday and returned them on that next Monday after seeing all the comments of either customer service saying it can’t be fixed or the COO is working on it. The bottom line is it was a big let down and i don’t wanna wait for them to try and figure it out. I bought another led light strip by another company for the similar price and it works great right out of the box. This experience supports the reason I don’t typically by Monster products in the first place... overpriced items that really aren’t that good in the first place.
Matt Zobrist In our experience this is highly unusual for the Monster brand. Our team has always had great success with the company, including this line in other runs. Unfortunately, as we all know, manufacturing mistakes happen.
easy fix, unplug the lights from outlet, plug them back in, and right as soon as you plugged them back in, hold speed button immediately, and the lights should blink, it worked for me

It's what we do. As huge fans of the IlluminEssence line, we're disappointed that there's issues with this new SKU as well.
Its 2 months later and I just bought one today and the remote doesnt work. They havent resolved shit.
Amber Porter There was one batch that worked and then it's back to defective units. We recommend only trying the Smart IlluminEssence line, as they're manufactured by a different company.

The best part about this led strip is the contact information in the instructions. The phone number doesn't even seem to go to monster support, and the address is very different. I have a feeling they are fake monster strips.
I was told that they are produced by Monster directly, not Monster Digital, who licenses the brand name. We'll see how this all shakes out.

Made 3 trips to WalMart in Indiana to purchase these for daughter’s birthday. They come on white, but the remote doesn’t work. Poor quality control will definitely impact future sales. Thank you for posting before trying a 4th time. We will be calling customer service.

GUYS I FIGURED IT OUT. You have to switch around the way the cable is plugged into the strip lights. I was having this problem and this worked for me!

Kinda late on this trend but a friend just gifted me one of these today and I’ve done all of what the instructions said to do and set it up. They don’t light up, at all. When I first took them out the box and plugged them in, they didn’t light up. Everything is the right way, I’ve changed batteries constantly, the cable is plugged into power, but every time I try to use the remote it just shows a red light and that’s it, doesn’t do anything. I’ve been trying for an hour now and I don’t know what else to do because I’ve read all the comments and I’ve done everything there and apparently their number doesn’t work so..
Jasmine Barker If they don't power on at all when you plug them in, they're completely defective. They should turn on as soon as the power is applied.

Do we have any updates about Monster doing anything about this? I have tried calling and going online to get in contact with them but the page cannot be found and when I call it says I have to have an extension number but none was given on the box or in the instructions.

We had the same problem, but thanks to comments, they did work when we held the speed button down IMMEDIATELY after plugging them in. You can’t wait.

Essentially, they’re on the hook because their booklet states, ‘This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a class B digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules’. It’s pretty clear that these products have not been tested.
Kelly Dolan That means that the design spec will not interfere with RF applications on the essential bands. It does not mean that the individual items have been tested for functionality.
i made mine work...here is how-
i plugged 2 strips into my USBs on my tv. remote wouldn't pair.
turned the tv off.. waited 10 seconds-ish
tv back on. held down (S+)
no light blink.
rapid tapped (S+) a few times and now my lights are working. i don't know why this seems to have worked but it did. maybe this will help some of you.

My brother got me this for my birthday and doing my research, I came to discover you can pair ur remote by placing it directly where u connected it and trying to issue commands

Can you Connect the led to the other pack i got? so it could be longer but i don’t know how to connect them together or if you can?
Lainee Spangler That is not a supported use case for the product. You can pair both to the same remote and run them from the ends to the center. That's our best suggestion so far.
Mine worked how is was supposed to the first day I got it, it was awesome I loved it.... thaaan next day it's doing what everyone's complaining about and the remote wont even work.... best 40 bucks I've spend all year smfh

The website on the instruction manual and the box doesnt have a "contact us" page when you select "contact us" it says this page cannot be found. I called the number and it says to put in the parties code or type the first or last name of who you're trying to reach....

Mine didn’t come with a USB it came with a big bulky wall plugin and I just bought another set of LED lights and it came with the USB now all of a sudden the wall outlet set stopped working completely and both remotes control the USB set and I am confused if you may know a solution please reply to my comment thank you!! I just got these as a gift from a dear girlfriend of mine and I LOVE THEM ! Then again I’m also someone who isn’t used to having things like this so I’m pretty geeked lol, but regardless I adore them ! ❤️🥰

OK.... I fixed mine by taking the batteries out of the remote, reinstalling them and it worked again! The pairing didn't work after I installed these lights in a very hard-to-install place and didn't want to take them out again.
I was kinda upset since they had worked on the bench just fine! I thought I had broken them somehow..... just pull the batteries out of the remote.... whouldda known?

I managed to pair the controller by plugging in the lights and removing a battery from the controler and putting it back in and then holding down the speed up button. I stuck them to my tv but every time I turn on my tv it turns on and then quickly turns off. It's been a headache
MCU Legend Initiative Unfortunately, the defect appears to be in the control unit (behind the logo in the power cable). Even if it works once or twice, it's likely to be a problem long-term.
they weren’t lighting up for me at first. but i just reversed the plug in through the lights. like where it plugs into lights, try flipping to the other side & plugging them in. idk if this was said during the video or in the comments but hope that helps 😂

Nate Torres You can connect several strips to a single remote control. Splicing multiple strips together into a single strip is not a supported use case.
Summary, walmart bought a defective product to sell real cheap for black friday . Dont know if it was purposeful, but pretty lucky for them a lot of people bought it for presents and won't or can't return it.
I'm bringing it back to walmart ASAP so I can put it towards a better , real set. I am using it to makeover my 5 y.o. son's bedroom and want it to work!!

We're working on trying to get a resolution from Monster. I can confirm that the product line (minus this SKU) is fantastic. If you do decide to swap it out, Walmart also has a set from Merkury Innovations (the company that owns Targus camera equipment) that we saw in action at CES and liked.
To anyone having trouble with pairing or lighting their lights all of my light strips (got 4 making it almost $30 worth of lights) were all unpaired when they got in their box they work but each one was unpaired and I had to like plug them in and instantly press the Speed + to pair (had a hell of a time with it) i also did speed - multiple times before trying to pair them. (That could solve the problem)
As someone who spent $30 I'm happy they work but unsatisfied with how none were paired to their controllor like the manual said and how many other people are having issues . I will be calling their technical lines and telling them none of their stuff were paired like the manual said it would be.
Also try checking to see if you didn't put the cable on backwards

You got lucky. The general problem is in the control unit. We've taken 5 of them apart now and nothing about the remote control is going to fix the defect. We'll try your idea with our units.
i cant tell if mine are blue or white but the remote wont seem to work no matter what i do i have done everything you said but im getting nothing do you think it could be the brand of batteries (yes i know that sounds stupid) the only thing working is the red dot in the center please help this sucks and i dont have the nerve to tell my aunt that they dont work
It's not a stupid question at all. However, if the light is lighting, you're probably dealing with the same issue a lot of people are. We're told to try holding the remote directly in contact with the control unit when you try pairing, but we no longer have a defective unit to try it on.
i had the same problem with the 2 bulbs and 2 strips kit and after changing the batteries a couple times the remote started working.
That's a great solution when the remote is not working, as opposed to the control unit.

Mine worked fine when I tested it out, but as soon as I set the light strips up they stopped working. If anyone else is having problems with this, I found that flipping the connecter piece the other way made them work.
I have the lights for my fan it used to work but now it like disconnected and won’t work the red light turns on on the remote

It did work for me, I did hold the speed up and it didn’t blink, but we touched the circle in the middle, the one that turns red and it started changing colors
UwU WhAtS uP iTs ShIkIrA UvU It's great that you got yours working. The indicator light is not a button, however. Touching it should have no effect, unless the remote itself is broken inside and the pressure moved something inside.

Kelly Deasy The red circle is definitely not a button, but it has been known to accidentally trigger functions via capacitive discharge. Usually it turns the lights purple. What batch number do you have?

Is it Bluetooth or it needs to be plug to work or can it work without it plugged?
Atiyeh Ali aka T It is controlled via RF, but not Bluetooth. It requires the remote to be controlled.
i found out for mine that it was the connector to plug in the led strip that was the problem not even the lights my guess is the sensor is messed up some how on the connector itself
KamTheMonkey From what we can see (we took several apart) and the rf receiver seems to be not properly seated on the board.

Abraham Sotelo That's the problem that most of us are experiencing. Unfortunately, there's a defect. We're working on getting a resolution from Monster corporate. The other option is to return the product to Walmart.
Mine did this but I just kept pressing every button on the remote and then I slide my finger across the on and off part about 7 times and It started working

I had the same issue after already had them pair up at some point unplug to usb while cleaning up and now I go to turn them on and nothing FOR SOME WEIRD REASON taking out the battery of the control and putting them back triggers something where THEY NOW WORK

Out of the 8 boxes I bought, only one worked. I then tested the other strips with that revived and found that the receivers are the issue. So I have 8 working remotes and strips... but only one receiver

The phone number in my box is on a loop and no one is answering. Also the website contact is very glitchy. I bought the 16.4ft light kit. My kids are so disappointed.

Chances are that if the remote doesn't work and the pairing doesn't work, you've got a defective unit. We're trying to get a resolution from Monster corporate.
The speed button does work however you must be using M slider simultaneously. And it will adjust the the speed of flashing.

There is a small collection of preset color animations, but you cannot make your own. You can see them all in action by using the M+ button on the remote. You can then control the speed with the S+ and S- buttons.

I have found the problem,it’s the cable,that sensor or whatever it i,so my dad went to go get another one and i tested it out and it works so what i did was switch the cable with old to new one.Turns out the cable that my dad bought works and the other I had didn’t so yea

Not sure if anyone will ever see this but just Incase, to pair the remote to the lights all you have to do is hold down on the S+ and the S- for 3 seconds and it will pair.

This shipment was a direct relationship between Walmart and the factory, and it definitely seems as if the factory did not test the product on the way out the door.
Hold the speed + button as soon as you plug in the strip don’t wait five seconds !

This is gonna sound very unbelievable and stupid but I'm telling the truth but I took the back off the remote and took out one battery and put it back in while I had the LED light on still and it instantly paired and worked for me. Idk if it will work for everyone but maybe it'll help someone out there.

So my guess it’s either the cord or the remote because I plugged in another cord into my led lights that weren’t changing colors and it worked perfectly, however when I switch the cords back to the original one, it just stopped working
It's definitely in the control unit. We ran tests last night and identified the issue to be there. Ours is physically warped compared to the other control units we have.
What other brand cord did you use? And where can i buy it

I happened to unplug the strip usb while it was off to connect something els & when I plug the usb back. The light turned on but won’t pair with my remote. My light bulbs are pairs tho. It could be plugged in backwards into the small four holes to connect it to the outlet
Mine if u slide ur finger from left to right it goes on and off if you just tap it the lights won’t go on and off idk maybe it’s different mine doesn’t plug in with the usb it has and actual plug 🔌. A big block like plug but the remote is identical

You're missing the control unit? Without the cable/control unit, take it back.
Omg I figured out my problem, i just switched the side of the cord to the strip lights and boom turned on. Yayyyy
A year later and if you have the side of the plug that has the lable out to the front it works just fine
Some of them do. The defect is still out there, but seems to be going away finally. Glad yours worked, though!
