    Rich, if that trailer is aluminum which it looks to be you can clean it with a marine product called "Toon Brite" which should be available in Canada, it is used for cleaning Pontoon boats. It is a mild acid which cleans up the metal really nicely!

    • @FondelMikeRotch
      @FondelMikeRotch Рік тому +10

      Yes a acid etch would work, but be quick with water rinse or streaking or a deep etch will occur, leaving a bad finish.

    you should put a small solar panel on the roof so it trickle charges all the time. if you leave the keys, the battery should stay charged.

    Blast the trailer with crushed Walnut shells. The shells don't remove any material but leave a beautiful smooth semi-gloss finish on aluminum. They are also biodegradable 😉😊

      Was it an air problem with the rear axle brakes? I've run into stuck brakes on trailers that haven't been moved in a while. Those spring parking brakes keep the brakes applied, when it rains water drips into the drums and rusts the shoes to the drums, especially the shoe on the bottom..When you release the brakes, the S cam moves to let the shoes come away from the drum, but the shoes don't move. If it's loaded just moving it back and forth may break them loose. Empty not so much. I've seen tires ruined from dragging, when just a few whacks of a hammer would pop them loose. Set the tractor brakes, release the trailer brakes. Take a hammer to the brake shoes to get them to break loose. They break loose with a pop as the return springs pull the shoe tight against the S cam.

    We started using 2 cycle oil as a lubricant in our old diesels fuel had one that started hard the entire time we have owned it. After putting the 2 cycle oil in the fuel thing fires up so easy, way better than ever. Might give it a try sometime.

    On the trailer since it is a spread axle install an air dump valve on the forward axle that can be controlled from the cab. If you are loaded and cutting some tights corners, you will scrub the tires on the forward axle. Letting the air out of the bags on the forward axle when making tight turns will save you a bunch of money on tires. You would be amazed how fast you can destroy a set of tires dragging them sideways when loaded. I have just under 2 million miles driving all kinds of Class 8 trucks. Have fun with your new truck.

    The Steering issue you described on the first test drive, sounds like steering axle King Pin binding more notably with the with the weight of the truck on the ground. If It had a symptom of snagging and snapping free. Both bearing and pin failure (but was not detectable with the wheels jacked up off the ground).
    Notable: Incorrect steering arms for the wheel base can cause weird steering sensation. And must be considered if the wheel base has historically been changed. Poor tire wear, weird road feel and lurching or tire scrubbing in turns are symptomatic of front axle Ackerman angle issues. I worked in a IHC Truck Shop for many years . Learned American Truck Manufacturers typically list 3 different available steering arms to cover 3 different wheel base specs. Sometimes requires a different tie Rod,different ends, plus the steer arms if wheel base has been changed long to short or short to long.

    Rich, I have been absolutlely FILTHY over the last week. Every evening after work, my 13yo son and I have been out inthe garage converting our 68 C10 from 4 wheel drum to 4 wheel disc brakes. The wife is not impressed with the amount of grime that has made it into the house. Two things keep running through my head: "Sittin' on yer ass won't finish your project" (thanks Puddin'), and "If you're not filthy, you're not rich." He's loving working on the truck, btw. As to the trailer, it need to look as good as the tractor.

    That trailer needs acid washed and a full polish job. Very time consuming but will look like a mirror when its done. Thats after you'll probably end up rebuilding the axles and brakes, cans, s cams bushings etc. It could end up looking more and more like a show truck.

    Phosphoric acid dilute wash and a pressure washer should clean up the aluminum, definitely going to have to go through and fix all of the load hold downs and the stake holders. I'd personally take apart all 4 hubs and inspect the bearings. Nobody changes the oil in trailer hubs, unless it's already leaking all over the inside of the brakes or the outside wheel. I've seen many a trailer hub spindle need to be replaced because of loose bearings. Honestly, if there's no major frame cracks and you replace the rubber parts in the suspension, replace the brake components, it's a pretty good deal.

    • @JosephArata
      @JosephArata Рік тому

      @@timmoyer7068 Phosphoric acid is in alumabrite, It's the same stuff they use to remove excessive aluminum oxide on aluminum wheels. It's also used to treat aluminum before/after it's been welded to help prevent passivity. So no, it doesn't cause Aluminum oxide to form, you're wrong, oxygen and water cause aluminum oxide to form.

    Start with an acid wash product on the trailer aluminum only. Don’t get any on the truck. And once you get new shiny wheels on the trailer don’t get acid on them either. You could always sand and polish the trailer cause it aluminum but that’s a lot of work.

    That’s a 48’ trailer with a fixed 10’1” spread not a 53’ . A 53’ the rear axle would be farther forward. As for cleaning it up get it acid washed the truck washes do it and it’ll brighten the aluminum and remove the oxidation

    Iv got a set of those special sockets
    Basically a 12 point crows foot
    I use em all the time
    Cat sell the sockets in a cat branded box
    Open the box and there's a snapon box inside the cat box
    Cat sell alot of snap on tools for 1/2 price of the local guys
    But I rekon snap on jacks up the prices way higher for us Aussies so cat prob just sells the tools at US prices

    Take the flatbed to a blue beacon once u replace the floor, an let them acid polish everything aluminum. Then get u a Conestoga setup. Ooooo yeah.
