I kind of suspected a rod bearing(s) or a broken cylinder liner or 2 when you were trying to get it cranked up. My guess is someone ran it out of oil before the last owner got it. When a Detroit *QUITS* leaking oil, you better check it and add a few gallons!! Probably salvage the trans. and the diffs, etc. and scrap the rest. Better luck on the next one!😁

I bought a fleet of 8V92TTA powered trucks in 1979. I ran Rotella straight 40 ONLY! We dropped the rods and mains at 675,000 on our test engine which was our first addition to the fleet, and the bearings had very minor traces of copper showing. the DDA dealer in Memphis was so impressed that they sent the bearings and an oil sample to DDA corporate for evaluation.

The old widomakers are banned in Nova Scotia. $10k fine per rim IIRC. However, if you want to convert the spoke wheels over, you can just use standard dayton rims which take a modern 22.5" or 24.5" tire. As for comming apart, back in the 80's the owner's shop was doing one in the shop and the ring embedded itself into the ceiling, and they never could get it down.

None of those bulging tire cages came that way from the factory. My dad told me of one mechanic in the motor pool at Ft. Richardson, in Anchorage that wasn't using a cage (they weren't that common in the early 1950s). One of those Dayton wheels came apart and cut him pretty much in half. No one in that shop ever forgot... that was an expensive training session!!

You can also get conversion wheels so you can mount regular 11r22.5 tires on those axles. We used to do that all the time. Ive also changed hindreds of split rims over the years. The biggest thing is that if there is any rust on them that they get thrown away.

  • @DigitalBenny
    @DigitalBenny 3 роки тому +1

There's actually a specific type of split rim that's called a "Widowmaker" They still make split rims for road trucks, they're not illegal or banned or anything of the sort.
A "Widowmaker" wheel is a wheel where the "split" is in the CENTER as opposed to one edge. THOSE wheels are no longer made, and are (technically) "banned"
I've been doing tires for over 2 decades and in that time have only come across an ACTUAL "Widowmaker" wheel once. If you ever see one in person, you can understand their danger.
On a more common split wheel, you can inspect the lock ring from a (relatively) safe position as you begin to air it up. With a centersplit wheel, you have to get down and put your easily detachable skull in the blast zone. And THAT is how widows were made.

We used to balance them by putting a tire hammer on the ground next to the tire, spinning the wheel to see where it was sticking out more (which we would determine by seeing which sector of the tire came closest to the tire hammer as it was spinning) and then tightening with an impact wrench.

Unfortunately the 2 stroke diesel retirement program began when the Series 60 was introduced and Optimus Brine's bearings looked like they ran for a while before finally letting go, but still runs. In '89 a logger asked me to do a bearing roll in on an 8 v 92. I told him it needed a line bore, new rods, and a new crank before I could do the bearings. He asked me to emery cloth the journals, roll in some 20 over bearings and he'd see what happens. The truck was a mountain, rough road, short haul transport, just for shuttling logs out of rough terrain. That truck ran 50 weight gear oil in the engine and out lasted 3 newer trucks and was still running in 2010, but was shut down by emissions because someone turned him in. I do not recommend that type of repair for numerous reasons, safety being of severe concern because if the engine seizes you could loose all control. This gentleman was an old school logger who drug logs with mules until he could afford to buy his first machine, very different times.
Those old engines leak like crazy, but just keep running, even after the bearings are gone.
Too bad about OB, definitely a noble effort.👌

At least you have a sense of humor about the oil-viscosity issue....but yeah, that old Astro is beyond salvation aside from perhaps the transmission and some cab-specific items for another Astro project.

15w/40 isnt wrong for an engine for which SAE 40 is prescribed: In the operator manual of my 1967 tractor it says SAE 10 or SAE 20 in winter and SAE 40 in summer. The very same engine 15 years later, 15w/40 is prescribed in the manual...
And guess what ? 1980s multigrade 15W/40 oil ticks both boxes, its thin in winter temperatures, and thicker in summer temperatures! Now all you have to do is change your spiked winter tires for your summer tires when the weather changes, not change your oil too !
Oh well, i dont have to tell you that: you were just being nice to all the internet experts 😄👌

We had one of these widowmaker rims blow up in the tire shop I worked in 20 years ago. it was on ly a 16.5" rim, and it still sounded like 100 12ga shotguns going off at once. The guy who was working on it came back to work just the previous week after being out for several months from getting his hand mangled by a bolt-together forklift wheel that he forgot to deflate before disassembly.

The rh 5 wheel is the widow maker. Split ring wheels are used in America to this day on old trucks. Mostly chassis though. Steer tire split rings are a no no. The frame situation is a no go here also. Parade truck / antique truck should be OK. No trailers . I worked for iloca in Illinois and MBT for years on trucks and trailers. I'm excited for this build. Vvg brought me here. Good luck with this. I'm subscribed now.

Early 92s were known to spin bearings from liner o-rings leaking coolant into the pan, although that's not necessarily what happened here. I bare-blocked several 6v and 8v 92s as a dealership mechanic in the early 80s, both under warranty and as customer pay.

A C-15 is the same block as a C-18, crank rods and cylinder packs, plus injectors. Can be done, but Cat is the most expensive to work on/play with.

That bus you showed was almost an exact match for the 1953 GMC bus my Grandpa had as a retirement toy with a 6-71* in it. It's almost as if you were talking to me, but I was like "I didn't say anything about oil, my man!!"
I'm the guy that made the cheeky and fun comments about Brine having his heart broken by a transit bus (which is still my personal theory for why it was parked), not mean or cruel oil viscosity comments. :)
*also discovered that the 6-71 in it was roached _after_ he bought it. Somebody musta put 15-40 in it...

The V series 2 Stroke Detroit’s as a rule need there rod/main bearings checked and or replaced around every 100,000 miles because compared to the inline 6-71 there surface area is rather small. That said finding a decent Cab Over cab these days is getting pretty hard to find. The good news is finding good running 2 stroke Detroit’s at a good price is a still pretty easy and R & R a engine in that truck is not all that hard especially compared to say a Combine. The problem with the frame is a condition know as Rust Jacking unfortunately back in the 1990’s when that first started to occur on that truck no one split the frame sand blasted it and smeared rustoleum all over the cleaned metal. Before you scrape that truck you might want to post it for sale especially after the borders open up because there is a lot of interest in Cab Overs right now. That said you might want to contact TwinSticks or Gentry and Sons to see if they are interested in that truck as is.

See I'm thinking, sell the cab over er cab, to reimburse some of the cost of the truck. And rebuild the engine as an "in between job"
Get the crank reground as an also "in between" (machinist) job
If the rods/bores pistons rings all check out ok?
      Is it not worth trying?
