- Опубліковано 8 бер 2020
- This One-Take, 16+ minute video details key points in the Dream Theater song, Pale Blue Dot, off of the Distance Over Time album. In addition to details on parts, the philosophy behind them is included. The cheap Goggles have diopters. Awesome for not busting eye glasses. Mike is a co-composer of the song. All engineering done by Mike. Credits/Gear listed in the credits.
it's 5 am and I'm not a drummer. This guy's a legend
Yep...
No doubt and a very serious musician ¡¡¡
It’s 3:40 PM now. Are you a drummer yet?
Yep
This is like a god explaining why he decided to put some cows over the grass instead of under the sea
Pero que haces aquí????
Lol lol
...and the fact that I’m watching it, is like he’s trying to explain that, to the cows.
A God? Settle down fan girl.
Mike Mangini is an extremely talented drummer, but he's only a man. Idolatry is a grave sin. There is One True God: The Christian Holy Trinity. Have a good day man. Peace!
Did this man just pull off a 16 minute tutorial in one take?
A real professor.
He does hour long lectures/lessons for a living so this was essentially just a warm up for him
Bavin Geter for a 4min part of a song 😂
@@Frantiqdrummer he actually explained the whole song lol kinda hard to tell, I didn't noticed until I heard the song again.
Mother of god
He's like an alien explaining the secrets of the universe. He's just unachievable, skill wise.
To put it more simply. This is someone over-explaining the foundations. I've been playing for 15+ years and I was watching and digesting this like I've never heard this shit before. This explained so overtly, it's lame. Mangini is a God, but this video is beyond stupid.
@@andrewheartsu he's explaining it in great detail. What's lame?
Lay off the cheese steaks, Mike
@Otie Jason portnoy is more creative but mangini could play a beat with one hand that portnoy couldnt even do with 2 hands....
@Otie Jason lol fanboys are hilarious, go back to bed kiddo
Who else is never gonna be able to learn and play this song but still just sitting here watching ...
Gold. Me even if I play for many years now. I felt so useless lol
Why play somebody else's song?
@@Nowhy that a serious question?
@@TylerCritti yes, but I asked it lolserwu1337.
I'm a photographer. I'll never play this lol
And I'm still here watching...
Mike, forget about Berklee. You need to teach at M.I.T.
That's where his degree is from.
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer Lang couldn't do the polyrythmic improvisation at DT audition, but Mangini did that with ease
He needs to teach on youtube lol Schools cant pay what he could earn online lol
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer
Are You NUTS !! LANG made mistakes in DT audition , Mike Mangini made 0 mistakes and understood all the music
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer you know, it doesn't take being an asshole to say that Thomas Lang is good.
Did anyone else's brain dribble out of their ears and nose into a gooey puddle on the floor?
Quantum Robin ... nope, not even close... mine vaporised heavenward like a whispy spiral of smoke from scent sticks 😂
Pretty sure my brain dribbled all the way down through my digestive system and came out my butt.
Not really. I just ignore the counting. When you hear what he’s actually playing its playable. If you try to focus too much on theory you’ll miss the music
No imr totully fyne nop probleems her
wait whaat is werds
Haha Haha!!
If only every drummer was this involved with their fans.
Love you Mike!
When your drumming is so dangerous you have to wear safety glasses to play.
When he says “the obvious thing to do is to play a 7 over 11/16, what else can you do there” I don’t even know what that means or how to play it 😝😥
The timing is easy like all timing. All you have to remember is that every measure is 4/4, you just change what goes in between. For example 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &, is 8/8 but there's still only 4 beats in the measure, you can change this into odd time by removing some of the "E's" "&'s" or "A's". Same with trips or quins, they're counted as 1 trip - let 2 quin - tup - let etc.
Gage Morgan Quintuplets are counted as 1-quin-tup-let? Really? Quintuplets are fives. 1-quin-tup-let is four... 😃
@@mikepostdrums Sorry meant "&". Edited the comment a couple times to be clear since doing " and 1's made my comment a little hard to read.
@@Cyb3rSix I'm with Colocho Ramirez here, I did not even get what you two are going on about.
@@whakjob Its just how a drummer counts. If you have 4 beats in a measure you would count 1,2,3,4. So let's say you want a punk beat you can write it out as k,s,k,s. K= kick, S= snare with hi hats on 1 through 4. If you add hi hats in between each beat you get 8th notes and you count them as 1&2&3&4&.
This dude is just one of a kind personality. He`s impossible to not to like. And a good player too.
His phone call from the band offering him the job is beautiful.
@@mattbowden1981 Is there a video of that?
@@nonyabusiness6084 yes! Search “Mike Magini Dream Theater Audition”
I totally nailed this on my air drum kit after watching this video once.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤣
The best part, lies in the fact, that this LEGEND, takes the time to explain to all of us this!
This is what makes Mike Mangini, LEGENDARY...
People never seem to mention what a nice person he is. Met him a few times and hes very accommodating and very approachable. Plus hes wearing safety glasses!! #NoEgoVeryCoolDude
13:50 Adam Neely's polyrithm meme is officially in a Dream Theater Song XD
God I love geeking out over this. Thanks, Mike!!!
Please don't take Our Lord's Name in vain. Peace!
@@RapidCycling07 Actually I’m at liberty to speak however I want :)
This video is very important ! It's an inside to how this man thinks and how important his job is. No wasted movement at all . Everything is thought out a thousand different ways until it's undeniable . Mike is a different cat and he has not only did the band right he has improved it. I know it's not a popular thing to say but, he has changed my mind. Mikes a boss no matter who he plays with.
Totally agree, legend and added a new vibe and musicality to DT that has made them better in many ways
I agree he did improve them. Without Portnoy there is no Dream Theater and he was the drummer that got me into them in 1993 but Mangini carried the torch and made them more interesting.
I feel like Mike should put this on a DVD full drum lesson with the really nutty parts from all the music they made since he arrived on the DT ship lol :D
Keep it up Mike!
I believe before he joined Dream Theater he was a Professor of Drumming at Berkley School of Musix in Boston. If so, he is still teaching how he plays. Carry on Professor.
According to his website:
2007-2009 Voted in the top 1 to 3 % of the National O.C.E. College Professor Student Response Ratings System.
2000 - 2010 Was part of the Berklee College of Music’s Percussion Faculty and served as a Department Student Advisor from 2005 - 2010.
No joke. I'm sitting here laughing at how complex this is. Love you Mike! Love the art work on the walls!
I actually picked it up pretty quickly. The first part where he hit the sticks together. I didn't do it exactly like him, and my timing was way off of his. And I only messed it up a few times. The point being that when I hit my sticks together, they made the same noise his did. Sort of
6:23 that flam use to change the rhythm is genius. We need more videos like these Mangini!! Epic!
Now portnoy has to play this on their future live shows, I am curious how will that go. You’re so amazing for this.
Portnoy could NEVER play the most parts from Mangini. Mangini is on a whole other level...
he doesn't need to
@@infinityminuszero 🧐
I dont even play drums. I just love watching people do their job at one of the highest levels of ingenuity and dedication. It’s fun, I love it, sounds great and astonishing to witness.
Damn people in the comments keep wasting their time explaining how people should NOT be impressed by this. Seriously, stfu. Nobody is being misled
First two minutes I was "yeah ok, I might do it if I practice" then Mike goes "flams with your feet"... Aaaand see you in a year if I practice like a madman
Its been over a year, you back yet?
@@kitsune630 I can kinda do flams with my feet... Veeeery slowly
Un-fricking-believable!!!! Words do not give this tutorial and this track justice.
Fascinating to see you break this down. Please more videos like this when you have time.
I never heard a so clear drum bass flam like this!
Oh god this is a really good breakdown of the song, really waiting more videos from you mike!
These are absolutely awesome, please keep it up!! Cant wait to see this live in Australia
more of this please mike, absolutely fascinating. you are an incredible drummer and teacher, thank you!
Great video on your compositional thinking, and great sound as well! I hope more will come! Thank you Mike!
Thank you for taking the time to brake this down and share it brother. What a kind and amazing drummer.
Hey Mr Mangini. Thank you so much for taking the time to show us these official chops and great composing tips. I’m grateful man!
Thanks for this, Mike. I may not completely understand it all but it inspires and makes for great watching/listening anyway! Keep up the good work! 👍
What a great watch. Thank you so much for this, Mike!
it’s amazing the level of detail that goes into every little section of these songs.
I still don't understand how many ppl still think Mangini isn't as good as Portney was. It must be a personality thing. Mangini is beyond AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They are fools.
Thank you Mike. We definitively want to see more videos like this and also more live drum cams.
Absolutely love this type of content. Gives me such a better appreciation of the music despite how much I love it already. It's very obvious that you're a professor and your teaching ability is impeccable. Thanks for the content Mike. Been following for a long time and always will be. Looking forward to all the content in the future.
I love the way you explain this stuff as if we’re all totally tuned in and on board. Sure Mike! We’ll get right on it!
Great explanation Mike, thank you very much, hope to see you again live
I was two minutes into this and mind-blown! Thank you for breaking this down. Absolutely amazing Gini!
Amazing, thank you Mike for showing us, please keep making more videos.
Mike ... I love you man ... Thanks for bringing all you do to DT ... Can't wait for the next chapter
Takes woodshedding to a literal level.. Eye protection required :D
drummerguyron ...you solved the mystery of the safety goggles for me. I did not even occur to me that his drum sticks were disintegrating under the velocity and power of his strikes... especially to the drum elements set overhead of him.
Amazing articulation, orchestration and explanation.
Always on point. 👌🏽
Very cool insights into an incredibly crafted drum part and song, thanks for sharing!
Super Mike! You're the best! super video as always! ❤️❤️🤘🏻🤘🏻
Wow...Mike you're truly a Master...and a living legend...please upload more and more...enjoy watching it!
Thanks Mike. I saw you guys at Hard Rock Orlando and it was a mind blowing performance. I will be back to see DT again next time you come by.
I was trying to learn Regex in Python coding . My mind got tired so I came on to youtube and started watching this. Then went on to try and learn Regex again coz what he is doing is much more complicated.
Excellent explanation .. Loved it Mike, looking forward for more from you
Mike you're amazing, your drumming is beyond awesome and I love you
Talk about instructive video! Love the philosophical notes that pops up every now and then! :)
Thanks Mike to make this video. Pale Blue Dot is one of my favorite in the album
Indo??
This channel is the best thing ever.
Well worth the time to watch! I'm sure I speak for many drummers out there who have seen you play this on youtube and been positively puzzled by your orchestration for this section of this song... in a good way! My favorite part is hearing your process behind writing a drum part like. Thanks!
I have learned so much from you in just one video. You are better than anyone I’ve ever seen. Absolutely perfect.
Really shows how complex someone can naturally and comfortable think and play when they're that good. Thanks Mike. Really makes me appreciate your drum parts more.
its so great to just hear someone so knowledgable speak about their insrument and how they thought about what they are playing. 10/10

Excellent Mike. I'm 68 now and that's one of the best breakdowns. Keep it up. So happy you took over for Mike. I'm partial-you're my favorite. Keep it up but just remember to enjoy it!!!
You are one the greatest drummer's of all time, but for sure, the most incredible human being ever. That video was mind blowing and so fluid. You are the greatest
Amazing, truly an inspiration.
This is amazing Mike. Legendary
Straordinario Mike!!! Chiarissimo, grazie per l'approfondimento e congratulazioni per la tua straordinaria resa dal vivo!!!
I’ve worked my ass off to have an advanced understanding of rhythm...but his sense of timing still blows my mind.
Rhythm is part of melody. So why wanting to understand melody? Isn't it enough to feel it?
If you really wanna be blown away, listen to Marco Minneman
@@Nowhy that makes no sense man
@@guille7545 what of it doesn't make sense and why?

WOW, it's impressive! Congratulations Mike, please keep posting such kind of videos :-)
Mike, you're a magician! ;-) thanks for imparting and sharing your musical wisdom!
I really enjoyed this I would love more videos like this whenever you have time to make them :)
Thank you Mr.Mike Mangini for your explaination of beat patterns from this song. I really like and appriciate lots of polyryhthm patterns.
Also in this video, finally i have realized, how truly and amazing sound from yourcymbals configuration from Zildjian, especially A Custom Zildjian.🙏
Hey, Mike, this is an awesome video.
My teacher was helping me with some quintuplets some weeks ago. I will share this example with him for our next exercises.
You are a lot of fun and knowledge at the same time. Loved it.
Please do more of these, if you can.
Best regards from Brazil!
I think it would take me several lifetimes to get to this mans level. I don't know if its god given talent or years of hard work or both. All I can say is you are incredible!
Man, this is great!!!
Now you are this kind of thing, please do a drum explanation for Outcry, because I still cannot comprehend that mind-blowing epic up to this day. Thanks a lot for this awesome drum video!
Thanks you so much for this Mike. So helpful and inspiring!
That was awesome!

This was awesome, and your setup sounds great in this mix.
Great groove,! Great idea 💡! Wow
You are truly a beast. I think DT should be honored to have you, not vice versa. 👍🏻
I love this guy. Pure awasomeness!
Amazing. As always.
Awesome! I love flams always have been a fan of it and exceptional snare sound and overall brilliant 🙌✌️😎
I couldn't have done it any better Mike... Well maybe 9 beats over 11, but seven got er done just fine.. Love the content and that fat awesome mix. Thank you!
Amazing video Mike.
You are such a great teacher sir!
That drum tone. Wow. Spot on.
Mike I love your studio natural reverb it makes the sound more alive ❤️
Master Mike! Awesome video! That fill of yours 3 hands- 2 feet is great. I think I saw Dean Castranovo playing that a long time a go. I play it 4 hands- 1 kick as learned from Mr. Gary Chaffee. Thanks once again!👊🏻🍻
Mike, i love this class in this rare times. I would love, just an idea, some covers or playthrough.
Subscribing right now to keep up!

The big Mike Mangini drummer!the very very best on the World!Thank you very muck!:))
Simone Santaca' very muck lol
Thank you, Mike. You are one of a kind. Maybe the only logical replacement of the other Mike. DT fan since 1992. I appreciate you so much.
Sinceramente...un capolavoro di arrangiamento. Congratulazioni Mike!! Superlativo !!
how fortunate to have a musician as capable and as talented as Mangini share his knowledge in a humble way #playforthesongNOTego
3:46 my brain broke
Thanks for very detailed tutorial! That "pssst!" and "shhppp!" are really helpful.
And the do whop
What an incredible video
Impressive as always! 👍
I would say that Pale Blue Dot is some of the sickest drumming Mangini has done to date. I appreciate him taking a break from jackhammering his driveway to tell us about how he conceived it. The first time I heard that ride bell (and every time since), I would reflexively throw my hands up and shake my head with a slight grin. By the time you are playing something like that in a song that complex, it's over with - whatever "it" is.
I'd love to see the same type of thing with S2N.
