I just hope that the man is still having fun. He gets so much hate and seems very defensive here. I loved DT with Portnoy, I love DT with Mangini. Both are fantastic drummers and Mangini really shines on the new album. The man is incredible. Replacing Portnoy would be like replacing Lars in Metallica or Neil in Rush RIP, the expectations would never be met. Life is too short not to be enjoying your passion. I hope that it's just water off the ducks back for Mangini.

Met Mike last year after the DT show in Atlanta and he said the exact same thing to me about fans not being happy with the way he plays DT songs. He said, "Portnoy never played songs live exactly like the album recording so why should I?" And I completely agree with him.He was such a nice genuine guy. I told him don't worry about what fans say about you. Just do what you do, you played so well tonight. When I left I said, "Nice meeting you again and thanks for talking to me." He said, "Thank you and thanks for saying those nice things about me." I said, "No problem."

Dream theater becomes a machine of markething. Im sorry for him. I think it's not a good situation for this. The explaination is that Portnoy was a symbol himself and can do what he wants. Mangini is there to consolidate a symbol of dream theater. Repeating live the same things of the album is a way to create a brand. Lang and Donati at the audition where more creative but that was not what the producers wants. And takes Mangini. When Portnoy was in The Band they of course work to create a brand (they are a commercial band of course), but they don't need to do all this. Great man and artist Mangini. People should relax and respect other people and the things for what they are: art. Music is art, so respect art, and listen your fucking cd if u want a meme or a brand! Listen music when u go concerts. Idiots kids

People just love hating on others. Mike came in to the band and had to learn everything about the way of life in the band, not just learn the music (which isn't exactly in basic 4/4 time). He's done a phenomenal job fitting into the band. His precision is mind boggling. His ability to orchestrate on the kit is beautiful. He can play a song exactly the same way a thousand times in a row if he wanted to, where Mike Portnoy was inconsistent every show. His fills wouldn't even be the same (made me wonder if MP forgot how to play his own parts on the albums). At the end of the day, they're both superb drummers and have so much to bring to the table. They are individuals. It's been ten years... let Mike Mangini just be himself ffs.

I’m going to be a dick squared here and say that I often cringe, listening to both Mangini and Portnoy live, since, to my ears at least, they often steer away from the album to much. Portnoy makes more bloopers than you might think and I personally just don’t like manginis take on Portnoy as much (this does not extend to what he has written himself since I think he’s more comfortable with that). This might be because I’m a drummer and is extra finely tuned into what the drums are playing, and because they are in fact human, despite all evidence pointing otherwise.

I feel like mangini's playing, with all the amazing technique does not have the character and flavour that the old mike did. Does that make it bad? no. Do I like it as much as I liked the old sound? no.
None of us should be surprised, they are 2 different players, they are going to sound different and we cant be upset about it, but the reality is, we may like the new sound more or less.
I personally feel like dream theater lost more than just mikes drum sound, I feel like their songs have lost purpose or direction. They are still complex, they are still dynamic and full of amazing technique, but to me now it more often than not like its just complexity for complexities sake. It doesn't have the direction, theme or attitude that they used to. I would never say that mike took all that with him, but its probably a factor in the mix.

Mangini is so humble, his technicality fits well for the band, his different brand of drumming soul is perfect for where the band is heading. Saying something is square when looking at a round abject is nuts. Also not everyone loves big drum sets. Some of my favorite drummers play small four or five piece kits but the music he plays calls for a big one.

@@STSGuitar16 Damn straight! It's part of the show and amazement. I play a large kit normally, and I bring it out in full for shows (and I do use it all). I've heard tons of people say, "wow" and "look at that kit!" I've had people walk up after the set and even complement its sound and appearance (it's an entry-level Tama Rockstar DX kit from 1991 - but I know how to tune it).
In 20 years of live performances, I have only had two people bitch at the size of my kit: 1) a fat, flannel-wearing retard bass player who played in some lame, shoe-gaze post-black SJW band, and 2) another fat slob with greasy hair who played guitar in some local shit-tier sludge metal band (and whose bandmates confided in me after the show that he's an asshole to work with and all said my kit was perfectly fine).
It all comes down to the drummer's playing style and what the music calls for. Period. End of discussion. The showiness is the icing on the cake for the fan.

I think it's sad he has to be so defensive about his drumming in comparison with Mike Portnoy.
He is a great player and can without a doubt play what DT did in the past, but everyone has a style of their own.
I think sertain people let him pay the bill that Mike Portnoy left the band.
I liked Portnoy's playing style and charisma in DT and it was indeed, also for me, unthinkable that he left the band.

Thomann's Drum Bash Portnoy literally never had bleeding issues and he had the best live kit sound of any modern drummer lol Thats just bs, or not knowing how to mic a kit. If anything you make it even worse for engineers having them so high and hard to get to with proper angles. No drummer with their cymbals shoulder height has ever complained about bleeding live. Maybe Mangini is still new to audio engineering and touring but thats hardly a valid reason for the ridiculous height. It has nothing to do with being closer when hes playing twice as hard because of the angle. Its also not healthy to have our arms above your heart for extended periods of time. It looks 80’s, and dated. Its in no way ergonomic.
