      @Steven Pounsett Yet DT chose Mike, a former world record holder, over Thomas (and Marco Minnemann, and Aquiles Priester, and Virgil Donati). Thomas is an amazing drummer. So is Mike. To suggest either is overrated comes across as petulant and childish.

    • @papalazzzaru
      @papalazzzaru 2 роки тому +3

      @Steven Pounsett "Speed means nothing in a prog metal band"
      A strange assertion in and of itself. While much prog metal may not be played at high tempo there are still times when a drummer playing a nice comfortable 16th pattern at e.g. 150 BPM has to double up to 32nds. That's equivelant to playing the same 16ths at 300 BPM. And I'm pretty sure Mike got the DT gig based on more than speed.
      As a drummer myself I have watched and studied drummers since I was a teenager back in the early 1980s, and I have been doing the same on UA-cam since it first came into existence in 2006. I've already seen probably every video of Thomas Lang in public existence. I have already made the point that he is an amazing drummer, and without a doubt one of my personal favourites. I have seen him do things that I have not seen any other drummer do. However, the very same applies to Mike Mangini who I consider to be in the same bracket of top-notch drummers along with so many others I would struggle to name them all right now. There are some who I consider to be on an even higher level, e.g. Buddy Rich, Dave Weckl, Terry Bozzio, Ramon Montagner, and a few others. I have also seen others, e.g. Hellhammer from Mayhem, Riccardo Merlini, do things that I have not seen any other drummer do. Does that mean that I think they are better? No, they're just different.
      You are entitled to your opinion that Thomas Lang is better than Mike Mangini. My opinion is that there's no point in comparing apples and oranges, they're both different and both equally amazing in their own unique ways.

    • @papalazzzaru
      @papalazzzaru 2 роки тому

      @Steven Pounsett Seen it before. Seen Mike playing similar stuff countless times. You would too if you bothered to search. But fine, have it your way. Thomas is the better drummer.

    I worked with former Annihilator lead singer Coburn Pharr 20 years ago, and he told me about his time working with Mike, and he gave me some demos of songs they had put together for a side project called “Kindred”. It was great sounding stuff, and I tried to get some label interest for it (this was 6 or 7 years after they had recorded it), but couldn’t get anything going. I have never put it online, but it might be out there somewhere. I first saw Mike play with Gary Cherone’s band “Tribe of Judah” at a little bar between a laundromat and a pizza joint in Manchester NH, but they played the room like it was Wembley Stadium! Fantastic showmen!

    I see those with the whole "Why does he need a big kit?" He plays in a band where the previous drummer had a big kit and things like octobans and a gong drum. He has to have equipment that allows him to play the band's vast catalog, and you can't duplicate all those sounds on a small kit. Yes, Buddy Rich was an undeniable talent on just a smaller kit, but Neil Peart was equally talented on a large drum kit.

      @Jelly Jam It did play a part - he has said it himself. But he had a big kit before Dream Theater and learned to play effectively.
      His kit makes tons of sense. If he could only play well one way like 99.9% of drummers his concept wouldn't be anywhere near as efficient.

    • @jeremybeadleslefthand480
      @jeremybeadleslefthand480 2 роки тому +2

      @@nocomment3600 I could name 20 drummers who work as hard as Neil Peart probably ever did, and perhaps even harder.
      Virgil Donati would easily be at the top of that list by a mile. But Terry Bozzio as well...jesus he invented rudiments that were virtually unplayable just for the challenge! That's just two.
      People that are great in their art practice to maintain the ability to be great.
      As for the Neil v Buddy thing. As a jazz drummer, Buddy beats Neil. As a rock drummer, Neil obliterates Buddy. As a human being, Neil wins that by such a massive margin.

    Great Job with getting this kit to sound fantastic . less is more ! Mike as all Top Pro drummers plays with an already 'mixed' balanced dynamics! Still have the 'small' version of his demo kit from Huber & Breese in Midnight Fade in 8"10"12"14" hanging 16" Floor 22"aged maple. Gorgeous drums. Mangini is special

    I've seen youtubers with more mics than the mics on Mangini's Monster lmao. The set sounds really good. I guess for new drummers like me, mic positioning and mixing is more important imo.
