How to decoupage a glass plate

  • Today we'll take a clear glass plate and do some reverse decoupage on it. Flowers and a thrifty background trick make it quite unique. My website is
    www.upcyclewithdecoupage.vpweb.com if you would like to have a look - you can find some of the items I talk about in my videos and purchase them. Have a look under favorite things, if you don't like the style of napkins or papers, or the finish on the decoupage glue, you can still click on the link and be taken right to Amazon where you can purchase exactly what you're looking for. In the meantime, let's decorate this plate!

    Thanks for a great tutorial, the plate is beautiful and I appreciate the little giggle during your 'hand drying' the dish. You corrected yourself without missing a beat. Love your tutorials patioelf, you are a natural video instructor.

    Beautiful plate. You make it look a lot easier then it is. I started my light switch plates in my kitchen. On one of them I was like why isn't this sticking then I realized the second layer of tissue paper was still on, duh. Practice makes perfect, right.

      +Irma Brooks Exactly Irma! But I will say that with Decoupage it is much easier to learn than with a lot of other crafts. Once you do it a few times you learn some things on your own that make you say, "Oh, NOW I get it! "

    Can you tell me if the polyacrylic is non yellowing. I need to seal a tabletop that has 2 coats of decoupage and a light varnish sealer but would like to have a more protective covering.It was done with napkins & decoupage.

    • @patioelf
      @patioelf  8 років тому +3

      +Joan sayer Hello Joan, I know a lot of people say that their polycrylic did yellow-although they say when they use a polycrylic spray (though it is more expensive) it did NOT yellow. I always use the varnish that I find in the art section of the craft stores, specifically the Liquitex Matte, Satin or High Gloss Varnishes. They are made specifically to preserve colors, are non yellowing and you can use a few coats or just one to top coat your item.
      Hope that helps!

    hi there, if I do this to my Pyrex bowels could they still be oven safe? or will it burn. I guess it will burn lol just asking

    • @patioelf
      @patioelf  8 років тому +1

      +Tara Sharif Hi Tara, there are some projects where I will put my decoupaged item in the oven. I use Mod Podge and as long as you don't put the temp over 175 and don't keep it in the oven for longer than 15 or 20 minutes you can put them in the oven but you won't be able to use them to cook with-then they would burn and the papers would brown. If you're wanting to turn your pyrex bowls into something decorative, you can following those directions. :) *after you add the first coat of decoupage glue over your decoupaged item, you put the whole piece in a cold oven, turn the oven on to 175 -when the oven reaches 175, turn it off and leave your piece in the oven to cool down with the oven for at least 20 minutes. :)

    Hi,
    I did a similar project to yours, and I glued on a wall hanger to the back of the plate. When I placed it on the wall, after a few minutes later, it fell and broke.
    I just have a question, should I have glued the wall hanger before starting the project or use a stronger glue? The glue I used was E6000.

    Hi Pattie, Love your work. I was wondering if the decoupage is permanent on glass or if it could be removed? I have a window I would like to decorate but only temporarily. It would be done in a room that has no moisture. thx in advance for your help

    • @patioelf
      @patioelf  10 років тому +1

      Hello Maria,
      Thank you! That's an interesting idea. I was going to say you can do this as long as you don't add a top coat (which protects the work from moisture and the elements) and if you soak it in warm water when you want to remove it. Since you won't be able to soak it though, you can try this. Decoupage on a small piece of glass somewhere. Let it dry, and a day later, first try using a scraper razor (you can find them in the supermarket or hardware store) to scrape it off. Then use a warm wet rag to remove any residue left over. If that works you can do the same thing on your window. If it doesn't work you may want to use the warm damp cloth first, then the scraper razor. Experimenting on an old bottle or glass should help you though. You'll be working on glass even though it's curved, and you will probably find out what works best as you experiment which would then save you some time. Let me know how you make out!

    If you can use regular paper towels... then, can regular tissue paper work too? If I stamp on them and use glitter mist on them, can I use them as regular decoupage napkins?

    • @patioelf
      @patioelf  9 років тому +2

      Susanna Seal Hi Susanna. There are tissues from the box that some people call tissue paper and there's the tissue paper you buy to stuff gift bags with, which is a much firmer piece of paper. (I told someone once that tissue paper was a good thing to decoupage with and they used tissues from a box-which fell apart-just wanted to clear that up ) The tissue papers that you stuff bags with make excellent papers for decoupaging and stamping. So yes, you can use those. Patti

    • @patioelf

      Thank you Sylvia, and yes to both. Although you would want to use the special decoupage glue that Martha Stewart or Mod Podge makes that is waterproof. It will say it on the jar- also ..if your glass plate has grooves in it you would want to use napkins or rice paper so which is much more pliable and will go easily into the grooves. :)

      Hello Nassiba, & thank you! It's ok to have questions. :) There is no special wrapping paper or decoupage paper. It can be hard to work with thicker papers like scrapbook papers unless you are working on a flat surface . :)

      Hello Marianne, I did not get this message until today-I'm sorry it's taken me so long. Have you used the Glass Stain liquid? I've never heard of it so I'm not sure how it works.

      Hello Patti ... no I have not tested the product yet, because I did not have the chance to work on glass since my request.
      But I will keep you informed of my tests.

      @mlanders62 5 років тому

      You can make your own with alcohol, hair spray and LA Looks eyeshadow from dollar tree. I made several different colors, very cheaply. They are great for adding a "glimmer" of glitter or sparkle. Look for how to videos from ai john. She has lots of diy supply type videos .

    Beutiful work! I have a few questions...I see you use a credit card, but when I do I get shiny spots, am I removing too much glue? Also, how do you construct/create the warming drawer? Thanks!

    • @patioelf
      @patioelf  9 років тому +1

      Thank you Rhonda!
      The shine you're getting, are you using a high gloss decoupage glue or a matte finish. I would use the matte finish to be safe, I don't think you're removing too much glue. Are you on my Facebook page? Upcycle with Decoupage. You can post pictures there. I would like to see how it looks to get a better idea of what's going on. I should have mentioned in the video, I have an electric oven and it's got a warming drawer in the bottom of it. You can actually place the plate in a cold oven (on parchment paper so it doesn't stick) turn the oven on to 170 degrees, when it reaches 170, turn it off and leave the plate in there for about 20 to 30 minutes. You do not have to do this, you can also place the plate in a dry (preferably sunny) room and let it dry.
      Let me know if you have any other questions.

      Thank you for the response. I will look up your FB page. I use the Elmers Glue All diluted with water. I usually use my fingers to remove any air bubbles, but sometimes they reappear resulting in shiny spots, and adding glue to fill in the area has not been successful. I often have very good results, but I think humidity may also be a factor....I'm also looking for a faster way of drying the plates where it does not take overnight.---Thx

      Hi!
      You can use it because the work is done on the back of it, but you can not put it in the dishwasher. Sorry. I would only use a damp cloth with soap on it to clean it. If you get the back wet, it will come apart. Martha Stewart makes products that claim you can put them through the dishwasher, but mine did not last when I tried that. :( I hope I was able to help you out….🌞

    • @patioelf
      @patioelf  10 років тому

      Hi Janice, they are a lot like magic markers
      except that instead of ink they have paint inside of them. They work well on glass too! I'm enclosing a link to my web site where you can either purchase them or just read a little more about them. Thanks for asking, I'm sure other people were wondering too. )

    • @patioelf
      @patioelf  9 років тому +1

      Thank you Andreia, Martha Stewart makes a line of paints and decoupage glue that you are supposed to be able wash, so the plate could then be used for eating. Actually, you could still use this one but you wouldn't want to submerge it in water, or get that back part of the plate wet. :)

    Hello, how are you? I am a retiree who has been a crafter on and off for many years, but have not take the advantage of marketing what I have created (mostly jewelry). A couple of weeks ago, I caught the CBS show "Sunday Morning" and it had on there the work of John Darien. Since then, even though I have known about decoupage, I was fascinated. I have a Black History Program I will be going to be a part of in a couple of weeks and I am going to attempt to do a bowl using horses. I know that this is my first try, but I think I can do it. I love the technique you used. I also wanted to know if you know of any decoupages done with a food theme. I don't seem to find any. Maybe food is not a good theme. Let me know if you get a chance. Thank you so much.

    Love the tutorial as I do all but maybe its my screen. I’m not understanding the glimmer spray. Seems it just made the towel look like mud, brown craft paper. If so why not just use that. But wouldnt White tissue paper be better or the pull offs of napkins? I’m just not liking that the background looks dirty. I did do my first decoupage last night. An old worn out vintage carry tool box. Had to chalk paint it first. I made both my chalk paint and glue myself, They turd out pretty good considering the item was in really bad shape. I final found 3 napkin packs at drugstore with butterflies and flowers. The only ones in entire small town. Will have to look for others when we shop at a bigger town. I do thank you for all your instructions. You have the most details.

    Splendid work- quite an artist and teacher. I am just now hoping to get into decoupage with all the photos and ephemera I have (old written letters) etc. I'll have to figure out if this will work with pencil and ink etc. Do you follow @JillBarnesDacey...magnificent! I'm a little confused about technique(s) when and in the research stage. You both use different techniques. Is there not a 'proper' if you will the technique? I also looking for learn how books detailed. and watching your videos and hers! This is longer than I wanted it to be, tho you said to ask questions : )
    Could you recommend the best scissors for decopage-size, etc. I have pain issues so I shall look for ergonomic scissors as well. Thank you hope to hear back MERRY CHRISTMAS 2019

      tarabithia jones Hi Tarabithia, I've never tried to work on Plexiglass. Will the item you want to work on be flexible or will it be used as something to cover something else like a tabletop?

      there are tissue boxes or trays or tea boxes made of plexi glass... these would look great if decorated...any idea about which technique would work best?

    • @patioelf
      @patioelf  9 років тому

      If I was working on them I would first paint them with chalk paint since the chalk paint will stick to the plexiglass. They also make spray paints that are made just for plastic surfaces which would also work. I would then decoupage with napkins over them and use the saran wrap method. No heat, just the wrap. Similar to how I decoupaged this table. Let me know if this helps. ua-cam.com/video/8HrHrUmtqyk/v-deo.html

      +Beyma Ivonne Sanjurjo Thank you Beyma! I am asked to do videos in Spanish, Greek, Portuguese and Russian. I'm also urged to put subtitles at the base of the videos in English for people who either can't hear or who want to watch my video's at work! (LOL-they can keep the sound down) I can't do all of those so for now, I just focus on making the video's as easy to understand as I can by using a lot of visuals as I work. It was nice of you to respond to Reme! Thanks again!
