Being a service tech from the NC mountains I service a few boilers but mostly heat pumps with oil or gas furnaces. A lot of the old timers in my area that knew how to service boilers have retired so Ive been watching your videos trying to learn as much as possible. Bring it down to the floor! Best idea, as you've explained so clearly. For some reason a great many older Queens homes have return pipes that have all sorts of illogical arrangements. I remember seeing a coal to gas conversion with its return pipes run half-way between the floor and the ceiling in a basement.

Great video Mike, I had a call over the weekend very very very similar to this. Weil mclain eg series steam boiler, one pipe system. The main condensate line is leaking water from the air vent. I decided to move the tee 12” out so it’s not at the end of impact. I did so, and all was good until the boiler reached 2 psi. I go to see the limit control and it was set to 2 psi. There was no way for me to lower the 2 psi limit, it’s an old pa404 model series. Im changing out the limit control this week to a l404f 1367 to keep the system operating at a much lower pressure, 2 is to much. Also the boiler is oversized as well, short cycles every 5 minutes. As far as I’m aware this boiler doesn’t have a cracked heat exchanger like the one in the video. Great content Mike, keep it up!

Really good that you showed the AO Smith ProLine Water Heater that is commercial grade @ 24:27. As you noted, Lowes sell the signature series that is not of the same quality as the ProLine. Most homeowners don't know the difference and get the product where they can rather than a plumbing supply house which would only carry the ProLine. I recently replaced an AO Smith GCG-50 with an XCG-50. Works like a charm. Great and informative videos BTW. Thanks for putting them out there.

Great job! Alot of sludge in that unit! Learned something I always thought that if a boiler or a furnace had a cracked heat exchanger you had to red tag it and replace it right away because of carbon monoxide! Also would the customer save money by replacing the boiler now because it's oversized?

Mikey Pipes: great video! Love the content! That undersized copper header isn't helping that boiler. I'm curious, did you try adjusting gas pressure at the gas valve to get CO down? As to that p trap vs head banger wet return you left the home owner with (temporarily): with only a few ounces of pressure which the boiler produces, it will overcome the standing water pressure of 1 inch hight differential in the p trap and you can actually raise that pipe back up and leave it like that to avoid the head banging pipes or tripping hazard on the floor. As long as there isn't any hammering, which it looks like there isn't. It's an old timer's trick and it works.

Unsteady and climbing co? I know depending on the train of thought and I could not tell if the final spike was on shut down that does happen. But 100 to 200 ppm no spilling repair soon, over 200 to 400 only run if and absolute need and only if no spillage at all. Over 400 or climbing and instable is an instant shut down. It is always tough to tell what someone is doing on a service call with a video things move so fast. Been looking and do not know if you have a video on just combustion testing and what you would do at certain findings. Steady state is always an issue, same equipment different times and also same equipment but different meters at the same time, sometimes give different results with the later usually just being minor discrepancies. Gas appliance Service in RI has been great on training and National Comfort Institute had a good road show.

Just curious why you didn’t ProPress the valve in vs solder. Good news is I’m sure you will get the new boiler job. Bad news is getting the old out/new in. The short cycling could also be caused by how dirty the rest of the system still is, and the steam may still be too wet...all will be addressed when the new boiler gets installed. Curious, do you flush the entire system prior to installing a new boiler?

Propress returns is certainly an option. Veiga fillings are rated for any temp that returns will see. They are technically rated for low pressure steam but I would be very very hesitant to propress a steam line.

Those how long is it going to last question just makes me cringe, like nails on a chalkboard. Great repair and handling of the client, cheers from L.B.I.N.J. I would make the trip to your neck of the woods and work for the day, I am twiddling my thumbs now no marine service going on this time of year. I would be fine sitting in the back with the tools so your man Godzilla stays comfortable.

I don't know anything about boilers so this may be a dumb question. So the water return to the boiler is gravity fed? Not pressurized?

Leaking steam boilers can ruin chimney. Chimney not designed for all that moisture. Also, steam will accelerate carbonization of the boiler. Would definitely recommend replacing before next heating season (assuming that it's actually leaking).
