Not only in performance, but logistically they were masterpieces.
Built in large numbers before the war _without_ any suspicion, and then readily converted, it would be like somehow finding a way to easily turn Cargo ships into aircraft carriers for WW2.
And the levels of automation were awesome, they literally had no manpower limitations.
The other logistics factor was the design was refined over decades so it was "perfected", unlike a wartime rush job.

The Lucrehulk is like a modern day supercarrier. It's not only an epic flagship, but is capable of transporting immense amounts of supplies, moving whole armies from A to B, or acting as a mothership to thousands of starfighters and even corvette sized ships.
Imagine how terrifying it would have been if the Separatists had hyperdrive capable starfighters, like droid operated X and Y wings. Imagine hundreds of Lucrehulks launching millions of craft in relentless attacks across the galaxy, with droid starfighters that would never get mentally fatigued, only being limited by fuel and munitions. From what I’ve read Palpatine made the Jedi the default commanders in the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) alongside any existing hierarchy. Hence making military leaders like Tarkin and even Yularen annoyed when they had to be in charge alongside Jedi generals, and making Order 66 a more welcome change.
Clone bridge officers aren’t given much lore, but Commander Wolffe from TCW was introduced in Season 1 as a bridge commander, wearing no armor. In the final episode of TCW you do see a clone in charge of the Venator as it drops out of lightspeed, but he probably isn’t an admiral.

One thing I will say that most people never seem to consider is that the Munificent and Recusant had a significant range on their heaviest weaponry and if they held back as a battle line to pelt approaching enemy vessels from afar with withering firepower, it would have helped to mitigate their fragile hulls and give more leeway for any vessels attempting to flank them to be noticed and responded to. Unfortunately, they very often sent to be sent into brawling range.
This is especially so for the Recusant which has a rather thin frontal profile and thus could, under ideal circumstances, focus its frontal shields in a relatively small area to remain safe.
As far as favourite ships go, while I love the Lucrehulk, I would go with a Providence. The reason is its modularity. Personally, I would strip out most of the missile launchers because the shields need to be lowered for them to fire and replace them with more laser cannons for point defence.

Y'know turning a freighter's cargo bay into an insanely sized hangar certainly does has it upsides even if it does mean a vulnerable interior.
It also made a lot of sense for the Separatists to make cheap but deadly ships. The 'glass cannon' approach to designs works on the basis that you can deal a lot more damage than you receive even if you lose the ship. Since Separatist ships were cheap anyway, focusing on offence made sure they could win with attrition due to the republic navy being so expensive to procure and maintain.

It's not the most powerful, but I really like the Recusant destroyer. You won't lose your shields if the enemy is already dead.
It does lack its own fighter support, but that's what carriers are for. Deploy them together and the problem is solved. Plus, I imagine Vulture Droids are just as capable of hanging onto a Recusent for emergencies. When their fuel was expended, they would need to divert to a real carrier, or be discarded. Or they could ram an enemy.
I do like the idea that the ship has a droid brain, though it's odd that it would be fitted to a ship meant for such uncomplicated tactics. A B1 could handle charging at the enemy, guns blazing.

Lucrehulks for my money are some of the best ships out there for what they are; monsters in terms of transport capacity, brutes in terms of firepower and bastions in terms of shielding. If I wanted to blockade a planet or take it on the ground, I could park one of these in system with a few of the lighter ships in support and mostly call the system secure. If one could keep up with more modern ISDs I could see those making for a terribly dangerous fleet needing only the addition of an interdiction field to be complete.
I cannot help but wonder what a "super" Lucrehulk could have been.

  • @JeanLucCaptain

the main problem i have with the Lukrehulk is it was never designed as a warship and that ALWAYS means severe compromises will have to be made somewhere. Its weaposn are shown to be inaccurate prpbabnly a byproduct of being bolted onto what is a giant freighter never intended to be mdofied like this. And due to their distribution, only a small amout of the overall firepower can target all be the largest single ship. The hulk does however make a very good command and carrier ship sitting in the middle of a fleet, its guns pointing in LITERALLY every direction makes it perfect as the centre and its command and carrier role also would necessitate this so these are not problems if proper fleet formation is maintained.

My vote is for the Lucrehulk (Clone Wars refit). It was so heavily upgraded with numerous weapon emplacements that it became arguably one of the most powerful, heavy capital ships of the war. A flotilla of Venators were required just to crack its shields. That is darn tough. Not to mention the numerous turbolasers AND cavernous bays capable of launching like 1500 vulture droids. That is over THREE TIMES a Venator's starfighter complement. That is insane.

Really the equal to the Venator class ships. The Munificent is of course another favorite of mine that I would've called the best given it could be made in such numbers to cover a large portion of the galaxy on every front vs larger warships. The Recusant always felt a bit redundant given its not that much different in armor and firepower to the Munificent and if you go by the old cross section books the Munificent is faster, has longer range and holds more deactivated droids than the Recusant. But hey that's just my thoughts on it.

The munificent is massively underrated. Their low production cost makes them easy to field in numbers, sure, but that also means you have the numbers for more tactical flexibility. That combined with its massively powerful ultra heavy turbolasers and lightweight construction (relative to its size) means that in the hands of a competent commander, even a relatively even fight ton-for-ton against other heavier vessels would likely be in the Munificent's favor. Their secondary armaments being along the "wings" also gives each gun a wide field of view, allowing it to concentrate its fire on targets front, side or rear with few blind spots.

    1 lucrehulk
The overall shape makes it perfevt capital command centre for a fleet and can carry an invasion force by itself, the weapon systems were added for the new varient but made it almost impossible to defeat.
    2 providence class cruiser
A primary used ship that could deal devastating damage and though made as a sidearms ship could still be effective in frontal assaults and could carry a large squad of ships.
    3 munificent class frigate.
An effective ship that could be made in numbers and deal devistating damage with its frontal weapons, only needs a small crew but lacks any real defence and would need better armoury.
    4 recuscant class cruiser.
Though a nice design, i fear its skeletal form makes it more vunreble and though has a good weapons support and can act as a carrier. I would changes the design heavili in areas and needs to have a better defence. I made my own verient of this were it has been heavily modified by removing the skeletal appearance so it would be more expensive but would play a veriety of roles at once and have wing pieces for extra ornaments and two of the larger ones being for hangers.
