People dont listen carefully or may have language barrier. He cearly says this is the review of cars which costs less or equal to 22K. VW golf 150hp, BMW 118D 143hp, Audi A3 105hp and Mercedes A180 108hp are all just under or cost around 22k. Obviously if the price wasnt the issue everyone of them would have 200+ hp but that would be different review.
I really like the design of the 1 series and don't understand why people slag it off so much
So true Bmw
+utdminiman I also like BMW design much more. Other cars looks so regular and boring, BMW looks aggressive.
Tom yea the f20 m looks like a fkin shark from the sides..
Tom it's your choice , you know what u like. i like this car , u like that car.
Tom I love ma 1 series ❤️
Mat this one of your best reviews ever!!
Washing the car scene was HILARIOUS
The Renault engine in the Mercedes wasn't designed for the extra weight. "Oh, look at me I have a Mercedes badges Renault". ;-)
Easily, easily the A3 for me. The high-quality finish, good efficiency, decent practicality (on the sportback), and pure luxury make it the best all-rounder.
one of the best most entertaining reviews of everyday cars Ive seen in a a while , kudos props and then some to the reviewer and his team
The Golf is probably going to be my first car. I love the understated, timeless design. The interior is so nice too.
did u get it? (bit late lol)
Best group test video yet, keep it up!
A 1 series is the best from my point of view
Jxlowe bahaha
Am i the only one that hates the look of the Mercedes A-Class?
you like the old one more?
Christoph meister No, but the new one is ugly. New A3 and 1 Series look so much better!
worst looking there
legitimate Sweg Thank god someone agrees.
MattyFPS ohh tanx god so im not alone to thinking about it...
Why the hell it is called A180 when it has a 1.5L engine? Those branding strategies are getting more and more confusing
+Radostin Velchev its been over a decade since the badge indicated displacement for mercs.
> Mercedes A-class using a Renault engine that is made for Dacias...
What the hell is this crap
I wonder if they let their customers know that at the dealership? ;)
comanchio1976 Naah, they're just gonna be like "this is a car it's a mercedes so it's cool"
+Owismael That would really piss me off though if I found out after I'd bought it, especially if something went wrong with it and the warranty had run out - thinking I was getting some bullet-proof Mercedes engine, but instead it was from Renault. But then again, that's probably because I'm biased against French cars. If it's reliable and actually a decent engine - I suppose it shouldn't matter.
comanchio1976 I wouldn't call it decent because i see A classes on the street frequently and they're rattly, a bit noisy and sound cheap, also about the reliability i would say that it isn't a reliable engine, from what i'v heard it tends to have turbo failures and other problems.
If i were to get an A class, i would go with the A220 because it actually have a Mercedes engine.
Actually, I was at a car show where Merc had it's cars lined up and when I asked how are the sales on that 180d (1.5 dci engine) going, the guy replied angry that this is not a Renault engine, it's a reworked Merc engine and it doesn't have any similarities nor does it share the base with the, I quote, budget branded Renault. Well, that's really nice
I agree! MATT OUT DID HIMSELF! Excellent review! EXCELLENT COMPARISON. I WISH ALL reviews were like this when comparing!
For those that haven't properly heard Mat, the benchmark reference was price! That's why Merc had Sandero's engine, and A3 has 1.6TDI unlike Golf's 2.0TDI
I'd take the BMW1, it just has a really, really nice shape. Put on some interesting wheels and it looks like a small muscle car. Love it!
Nice and useful review for a guy deciding between the Audi A3 and Golf! Thanks
5 door car is more practical then 3 door thats a clever comparison Auto Expres
Just loving that snowy weather
fast forward to 2020 for me personally for a used hatchback under 13k its either the polo gti or 1 series 120i
Finally a good presenter! stayed awake this time. Well done.
😂😂 the mercedes car washing scene was hilarious, great review Matt
Not sure why would you drag race a cars with so much difference in horsepower. check on 4:28, VW Golf - 150 HP, BMW 118D - 143 HP, Audi A3 - 105 HP, Mercedes A180 - 109HP. No wonder the much higher horsepower cars would win.
this is the best one from Mat.
Tbh I think they chose the 2.0L Golf since it matched the price point of the other cars. So it's basically a comparison of a bang for your buck. XD
Very good review. A lot of good points. I hate performance comparisons, since 99.9% driving are within speed limits. Performance is irrelevant! Cargo, comfort, economy, price, etc are the main important facts to know. Styling is too! Admit it, we all like something with a certain style and it's what usually determines whether we want to buy something or not. So please focus on the details of the styling!
A class is not desirable
+Olof L It's ungly as hell
it's over the top, it's like wearing a gold chain.
Only reason i don't like mercedes, i prefer a classy audi tbh, if you're a flashy guy like "ooh look at me" kinda personality, then fair enough, but i like to have luxury without much flash.
The A180d is terribly slow
Great job. I like this type of reviews.
Great review love the graphics. Can't believe how expensive the golf is! saying that my old V6 was £26k and that was 11 years ago
It seems like quite a sensible comparison. All vehicles are pretty good and price does matter. That VW engine may have cheated nitrogen dioxide emissions but it allows for decent overtaking on A roads.
well, as much as i like your reviews i have to say that that performance test was unreal because i´m sure that the BMW is much faster round any track, any day
Subtitles at 0:17 "It costs twenty-two bandits and parents" LoL!
Definitely the Merc. Best looking, best interior, not too expensive, well-equipped, very fuel efficient and not slow if you go for the higher spec models
The 1 series is definitely more desirable - but only in M-Sport spec. The screen on the Merc is very low res which looks like its 5-6 years older than the others
for example ?
or do you confuse it with car production tech ?
Awesome comparo!! To the naysayers talking about unequal performance, it's blatantly clear he was comparing cars at the same price point, NOT power. Thus it actually means the Golf is somewhat of a deal considering you get the most potent engine of this group for the money. Similarly powered versions of the others will obviously be more expensive. So the trade off here is premium badge or spirited performance
Audi is the best. I love my a3 :)
Great test!
Is the wrench an optional extra or included? Since it will break down quite a lot being an Alfa :)
Loving my 62 reg V-40 R-design T3. Great, punchy car, sounds great, too. Dislike the frameless mirror, but overall, very impressed. Along with my new Mondeo, it's lovely.
I guess they tried to get around the same price for all, leaving a higher budget for the m1 ang golf, because the aclass and a3 are quite a step ahead in terms of price.
FYI, Renault has built some great engines over the years. The 1.5 DCI is one of them. Their interiors may not be great, but as an engine designer... hats off to Renault!
Saw one of those Merc, in red, yesterday for the first time and it sure looks desirable...and I´m not a big Mercedes fan
One thing that I think was overlooked, is that the golf at £22k isn't that well equipped. No parking sensors, sat-nav etc. A few 'normal' extras takes it over £23k and then you can get the A-Class Merc with a proper 'Merc' engine.
CAN'T STOP WATCHING MATT WASHING THE MERC. JUST LMFAO!!lLOL
I like and understand all the test but the last one about practicality im not so sure. Are u trying to say the other three cars dont have many compartmnets or it cant seat 3 in the back?
Depends on what A-Class your buying. It seems Mercedes have gone 2 ways with this car. One way is using more economical Renault engines for the low end models. Another way if your getting high end sport versions. The upcoming A45 AMG engine for this car will have 360 Horspowers which Mercedes claims is the most powerful 4 cylinder engine in the world. It even outruns a entry level Porsche Carrera 911 in the Sprint Time... ;)
That Audi A3 looks the best there.
For you, i like the Golf.
Luca Menna Seriously? It's boring as fuck. Oh I'm sorry, it's a "conservative" design... That's VW's excuse for their inability to make interesting designs.
Aragiss Yeah cause the audi is so different from the last version. I tried the mercedes too and i can say that it's an awesome car.
Aragiss Fuck you Mercedes makes the best diessel engines in the world but they are excpencive
Why not instead have Rebeca washing cars?
Bet u want Rebecca to wash u up
It is Renault engine , that also could be found in Dacia Sandero . For example , Audi A3 1.6 TDI uses the same VW group 1.6 TDI engine that could be found in Skoda Octavia 1.6 TDI .
Where is the Lexus CTh ? Is not available ? Im pretty sure it would have come first or 2nd
Agree with you the A3 and the Golf are pretty much the same car. I would have loved to see the Giulietta in the comparison as well.
Mat. One of the best presenters out! Needs more TV coverage!
Do you think he's got a decent amount of coverage now?
Lol
@@Amin_Choudhury probably
@@Top_Gear_Clips_Central haha
Please Autoexpress answer this question!
The purpose was to compare on cost, not on specification. Racing two cars with similar HP/weight ratios shouldn't result in any more surprises than this race did.
Guys im thinking for what to get for a second car would u suggest golf or 1 series?
Golf obviously
Disagree with 'most desirable car'.... A3 interior is class leading and it comes with xenons whereas the others come with shitty halogen lights
Being in the market for a German Hatch, Ive looked and driven all 4 of these cars in petrol variant except the a180 which is an a200. (a180 not available in Australia.) I agree with most of the review except a few things Id like to add. The A series can also fit 3 (skinny) adults in the back. And practicality is a personal thing, personally, I found the extra storage in the VW to be a pain because it would just be filled with crap most of the time and It made it feel really cheap. I'd prefer the gadgets in the Merc instead. Build Quality I'd rank 1-A Series 2-A3 (very close for 1st) 3-1 Series 4-Golf.
And which one would u choose among the four?
great review!
golf:practical ... a class:brand name ... 1 series:fun ... a3:interior ... PERIOD.
I'd pick the A3.... there is something pleasant in every Audi I see :D
They should do another comparo where they go "downmarket" with a seat, focus, etc. Good review though.
So far the best selling Golf in the UK is the 1.6 TDI SE, so try comparing that to the rivals and the BMW would of came out on top for performance.
An excellent review Matt! That golf really is expensive, but it does come with the biggest engine and the a lot of kit. I like the A class, but it's not that "exclusive" in the entry level... But still looks nice. I would take the New Leon! it's cheaper than a Golf, Better looking, and has the same technology. You might just save a few quid too.
Stupid because if you comparing performance choose similar engines. Which means using 120d instead of 116d BMW and 2.0tdi instead of 1.6 tdi on audi.
Its because its a comparison in regard to price and model variant, so all cars are closely matched in terms of equipment/spec/price.
Mat will definitely become a Top Gear presenter!!!
Mercedes A 1395kg - Audi a3 1305 kg.
And the problem is the 1.5 dci of renault?
and another thing, BMW has also it's own app so u can connect your iphone/android phone to the car...
Was Mat testing the BMW on TopGear's test track?
to put the record straight, the BMW 118d has a 1995cc engine as does the 120d and 125d, they just have different tuning specs, also a merc 200 is a 1.8 not a 2.0.
the gap at 2:50 on the left side under the air vent looks a little strange to me, or am i just sad?
The problem is for all of those 4 is... comparing them the Kia and Hyundai.
Currently have the same premium feel... for a lot less money.
to compare the bmw118d with vwgolf 2.0tdi you used to choose the audi A3 2.0 tdi 150hp and the Mercedes A200
I don't understand why people don't like the looks of the A3 - it seems by far the most neatly styled of any car in the class. It's the one I'd like best out of the four tested. And I know it looks very like the old car, but that's part of the reason why Audis hold on to their value so well.
I prefer older looks.
GREAT Comparasion
he also sayd that the cars are Diesel , but not that they NEED to be Diesel for this Comparasion
and the Bimmer is RWD , while the Ren... i mean Merc Audi and Golf are FWD
so
if the Merc with Renault engine is allowed , why didnt you choosed an A3 with Quattro , when you ALREADY have 2 left
Luxury and practically is important to me. I need solid performance but not unnecessary speed, well built quality, a nice dashboard layout but I don't need back seat passengers. Not forgetting a good sized boot which the a class lacks. It's the Audi for me
Alright now, somebody make a car that is a fusion of these four cars. As we just saw, it should then be the best hatchback ever!
value for money!! for sure the Golf number 1
The Golf is the best family car out of the four no doubt, I'm young though and I've got the 1 series, much more fun/thrilling to drive than the other three. Personally I think the 1 series is sexy, you either hate it or love it
iphone 5 working with Drive kit plus?
If the Golf really did win on all-roundness, then i can only conclude that best c seg hatchback on the market today is the 189bhp tdi Seat Leon FR. It's a golf and more for less.
I can't believe how much the A class loses on visual appeal on standard trim. It's somewhat bland. Out of the 4, i'd choose the BMW.
Another good review Matt, though i disagreed with you on most points.
A Mercedes engine in a Renault. Yes. They are quite different though. The Mercedes' engine obviously being much more refined, tuned to a higher specification too.
been waiting for this!!
I heard 114i has the same 1.6T like the 116i and 118i but only downgraded.. saw the evidence when i met a tuned 114i, he left me in dust bro and i was in an 118i stock.. he made around 200hp
mat watson does great reviews
Not many people know realise you're being serious. They thought you were joking, so what you mean is you do actually want to buy the Merc because it's engine is also in a Dacia.
I'm a total BMW guy, but from these cars I would go with the Audi A3, because it looks absolutely beautiful and for some reason I can get it for €3-4000 cheaper than BMW with the same specs. If 1 series looked anything like current 2 series then I might just take it. I also really like the new Golf 7, but why bother with that when 3dr A3 has almost identical price? Only thing that I hate about Audis, is that they have the worst dealership ever in my country. That is the reason my mom converted to BMWs and won't ever buy Audis again. Ah, decision, decisions...
Where you from? I want an Audi, but only if its not in your country..
_
1.6 disel engine from this review is just dead, I'd go for 2.0 vw. Otherwise agree.
watching this video makes me bemoan the fact that i live in the US... europe always gets the best versions of these cars...
You don't get it don't you? This reviews is using the cost to compare each others. There are other reviews based of power for the comparison.
From all these, i would chose Gothenburg, the Volvo V40 ;)
in Europe 80% of the cars have manual transmission, only in America automatic sells more then manuals, everywhere else in the world the manuals are the best sellers, and they are just better to drive.
It only has the 1.5dci engine block, which is heavily modified by Mercedes, they only buy a metal piece.
Great comparison! I'd probably buy the A3 since it's the best compromise of all categories
Why wasn't the Volvo V40 included in this comparison?
Well actually here in not Europe or America, ie: New Zealand no one drives manuals, only wired old people with cars from the 80s. Go to anny dealer you'll be hard pressed to find manual options in any car. Merc, and bmw don't even offer them here.
Let’s not forget that the Bimmer is the only RWD car out there
I really like this guy.
Nice, Merc has the same engine as a Dacia, that will make me buy it :). For me Audi, interior looks nice.
haha looks like you had a bit of fun making this one.
Yeah, the A3 has that, but if you connect your iPhone to the A-class, your car is more connected than ever before. It takes it to the next level.
