I’ve owned both cars, but the 1.6 tdi version of them both and this review is bang on !! Everything said in this video is exactly what I thought about both of the cars. Personally I prefer the Audi just because the interior felt better for me than the golf and the head lights look so much better, when you unlock the Audi and the lights turn on automatically it looks a lot more of an expensive car and the brand “Audi” turns more heads than the golf
Audi typically spices things up the higher in the series you go (like the A6-A8's are the top trim vehicles most often whereas the A1-A3 plus the TT can often be fairly spartan in comparison). They offer the S-line and a number of different packages to upgrade the looks or interior if need-be and it can be quite nice, though usually if you have the money for it, you just buy an S or RS. Nobody buys a base model Audi A3 expecting glamour , although I will say I saw the new Audi A4's have a rather nice interior with quality fit and finish. It was surprising, I originally thought it was an S4 because of it. Just my .02 cents
Pictures don't do it justice,I have the A3 sline the interior is nice with ambient lighting in the cupholders speakers, footwell door handles, nice place to be.infact the cockpit was voted the best compared to its rivals.
I had the choice between the Golf and the Audi, and I went straight to the Golf. It comes with more as standard, the quality of the interior is only slightly downgraded, but I really think the placement of gadgets and ergonomics feels better in the Golf. I'm not a fan of media screens that obscure the view and poke out above the dash; they're very distracting, plus when I bought my car, the Audi equivalent had an annoying dial to next to the gear stick to navigate the Media system, whereas the Golf had the touch screen. Hell, even the shape of the rear view mirror and air vents bugged me. The Golf just feels more grown up, whereas the Audi is looks more funky, but less practical.

@@wakkitep I was being sarcastic. Obviously you should never ever buy any Volkswagen diesel engine newer than 2005, as it'll collapse over time, and cost a fortune to repair. Thankfully, I will use a Japanese or Korean car as my first, since they are notoriously reliable, and cheap to maintain over the long period. I also wish you good luck for the future when the A4 will start to fall apart for no apparent reason at 60k miles.

3:20 Why does VW insist on making the volume knob indicator icon turn with the dial instead of staying stationary in the upright position? That’s something that always triggers OCD in people. As an Aussie I find it weird when Brits describe the Golf as a 'family hatchback'. Over here families don't really buy hatchbacks as they're considered too small for that job. In the past families bought large sedans (saloon cars I think you call them) while today they generally buy SUVs (less bending while fastening the child seat restraints).
Ryan Burr Golf Audi Sizes are bit bigger than the Min hatches such as VW Polo, Vauxhall Corsa, Seat Ibiza. Hence these are good fit for family regular. Being in Golf and polo you see big difference, polo is tight just enough to fit in whereas Golf has much more space leg head room easily fits 3adults providing they are all not over 5ft 10 and weighing 150+pound! Family of 3 at the back one being over 6ft and the other partner under 6, child/kid under under 5 is easily fitting for golf.
Out of these two I’d would opt for the golf due to the engine. However I’d opt for a bigger engine and go with audi. Interior is also a massive factor. I have an A3 s line and still love the cabin.
I had a 2 door car -as opposed to a 4 door- few cars ago because it was better looking, I'll give you that. I found it very impractical particularly when parking, most parking spots are not wide enough and fully opening the doors so they would stay open was always a problem. Many times I've dented neighbouring cars or damaged my own doors. Nowadays is only 4 doors cars for me, also easier for the dogs to jump in and out, the boot is for groceries not for animals.
When will manufacturers realise that a smaller engine doesn't mean more efficiency? The smaller it is the harder it has to work and the more fuel it burns.. ugh.
It's about driving style. You notice it on automatics more and especially on buses. If you drive very gentle on the throttle then you get better fuel economy with the smaller engine, but it means driving slower in general. If you want to get performance (speed) out of a car then the bigger engine works out more economical, due to the reasons you've stated. In buses they disable kickdown so the engine can't rev high to maximise fuel economy (which means new buses are quick sluggish, apart from hybrids which have the electric motor as a boost).
I would go for the Audi A3 because it desirable, fantastic looks and fun to drive. Though, I would go for a bigger engine than the 1.0-litre three-cylinder option.
The volkswagen golf is hands down the best all rounder and it is pretty fun to drive i have the new face lift one with an automatic gearbox it’s such a good car
yeah the best thing to do is just remap a TDI, remove the DPF and EGR valves that is what they lied about those 2 components. More torque without them in
How hard is it to count numbers properly and get both your CEOs arrested, then you poached BMW twice for new replacements. Their management has serious issues. Would you trust a car from cunts
Honestly I love pop out infotainment screens. When I'm not using it I don't want to have it sat there as a distraction or being in my line of sight. Plus it looks really cool.
Good review ... but wrong about the A3 interior, quality is excellent but design is extremely dull. Correct decision though with the Golf and I think it now has more exclusivity than the A3. They're common as muck now.
Brought the Audi A3 Saloon Special Editions 2.0 TFSI Quattro Black Ed with the same load capacity as the sportsback. In my opinion the saloon looks miles better.
I have a Fiesta ST 2013 and I was rubbing my eyes until they bled, I couldn't believe the ancient interiors of both of these 2018 cars. It's like playing Quake 1 with a bit higher res textures.
Seat Leon if you want a hatchback, Octavia if you need more space. Don't be a fool and overpay these. You can get sporty versions of the aforementioned cars for the same money that you pay for regular versions of these two.. if you don't mind the badge they wear..
For many, the lack luster interior quality and low rent feel of the Leon is a deal breaker. We are willing to pay for a nicer interior. You don't and that's fine.
Do you really think a couple of soft surfaces are worth that much? I'd like a nicer interior as well, the problem is, it's worth a couple hundreds of euros and they charge you thousands for that. It only means one thing, they're charging you for the badge. Over 90 percent of components of those cars is identical, you pay thousands for literally a couple of touches..
Supaa Dupaa Don’t get me wrong, I still like the A3 and S3 even more. I just wish Audi had used conventional rectangular air vents. A minor gripe for otherwise fantastic automobiles 👍🏻
I have a golf and it does 201 miles a day and it has 180,000 miles and I can tell you it’s f**king bulletproof clean it inside and out and it’s new nothing broken by fault of the car If it does the full school run (Forward back forward back)
the a3 looks so much better in the 3 door version. had both, much prefer the golf same engine, same wheel base, more leg room and boot space in the golf, and higher spec as standard. oh, I had the 2ltr dsg tdi in both
Got myself a Seat Leon FR which looks miles sharper than both of these. Basically the same car but got a top spec FR with a few options for still less than the equivalent Golf and Audi
Jon M It almost certainly has more than the 180hp they say it does, I rarely find myself wanting more power. Only average about 35mpg though, the 1.4 TSI is meant to be pretty good for efficiency, is that the case?
Quality! You got a DSG or manual? Well I'm getting about 45ish mpg with the way I drive. I don't think my 125 engine is the most efficient because it's now been replaced by a 150hp 1.5 which is supposed to be a lot more efficient. But I'm not complaining at all, I find it to be the exact same mpg as my previous 1.0 Ibiza. Still costs me £40 to fill up and would easily get my back from Edinburgh on 3 quarters of a tank
Jon M Mines a manual, and I could definitely be driving it more efficiently. Going more for fun while I'm young etc.! That sounds very good for efficiency! I've never got more than 400 miles from a tank, usually more like 350, but I don't mind because I enjoy driving it.
Actually you can change the size of the digital dials on the golf. You just press ok from the steering wheel. It can only be changed when the navigation is in the middle of them though.
A Golf looks much more premium with the piano lacquer (had to translate this from german, it's gthe black glossy finish of some of the surfaces in Highline and special edition models). I do have this interieur configuration and it leaves an impression. People who get in for the first time are like "wow, didn't expect it to look so premium in here!"
"You should buy the Sportback version" - Which is your only option right now, because from this year on the 3 door A3 is discontinued. I would rather take the 3 door myself :/
we got the 1.0 a3 5 door last year. Very refined vehicle, even on 18 inch wheels and semi performance tires. The interior is great, not even a squick or rattle ANYWHERE. Very refined brake system, and very efficient. Quite zippy of the line up to about 80-90 km/h. Actually probably hs more than 115hp - i will test it on a dyno after we hit 10 k kilometers. The audi feels and drives premium. Actually we also want to get a golf SW for pulling baby stuff, but I don't think the level of Audi will be matched. One thing: all the 1.0 Audis get a torsion bar, at least here....
And those vents are real and blow cold cold air nicely. Also the knobs in aluminium, great illumination, perfect steering wheel, nice punchy radio and refined infotaiinment that reads sms and emails, has google maps, weather, news, even football updates from the world cup - but you need to insert a sim card. oil intervals every 15k, service every 30k...go drive one, especially in S tronic gearbox in sport mode, switches gears quick and smooth. you get what you pay for...
I'm an Audi fan but the VW is a better buy, the A3 is basically a Golf with an Audi design. It makes sense if you really want a top of the line model but for sub 30k the Golf is better.
Before I saw this video in full I picked the Audi TFSI but after seeing it in full I'm going for the Golf. Lastly what about the Audi 1.4 TFSI how would that be?
The entire video is pointless because they're different engine sizes. Comparing apples and oranges, they should have gotten a 1.5 A3. I know they factored in the price as well but if you're savvy enough you could buy a year older 1.5 A3 that would be the same price as the newer golf and d much more
I own a Golf GTD and love it. 5 doors golf clubs in with trolley all singing and dancing. Can race like a young boy and get 60mpg when I'm cruising to work. Me and a couple of friends thought it would be a good idea to rent an Audi A3 5 door sport-back for when we drive to Prague, yes you head correctly Prague! 15 hours later.... Anyways 2 in the front 2 in the back. I can honestly it was horrible. It just felt small. The drivers position didn't feel good I was constantly trying to change and move about to get comfy. But I will admit its quieter, better round corners and just a little more class about it.
If i want "premium" i'll wait for the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class. I'm an expat in Stuttgart at the moment. The camo test versions are all over the place here. It looks great. And it will have a stunning interior.
The VW by default will come with adaptive cruise control and city braking (saved me a couple of times) which are two killer features not even mentioned in the review. No brainier. Golf.
CarPassion typically seats have much worst construction quality and tend to have a lot more problems over time. Leon is the prettiest of the 3 and the best value at buying time but I would go the extra mile and already get the VW, not the Seat.
I’m considering the a3 184 hp Quattro s line vs the golf gtd mk7.5 but I don’t know which one would be a better choice oh yea they’re both full options and around the same price
Do people really buy a 1-litre 3 cylinder engine for a C-Segment car? That engine would be suitable for a Polo or an A1, but for an A3, I think it is the worst choice you can do
Although I don't particularly like these small engines in larger cars, not long ago it was normal to have 1.4L - 1.6L naturally aspirated engines that produced far less torque. It wouldn't be my choice (1.8 TSI suits me well), but I could live with one.
I have had both cars....Audi is more solid, more quite and better interior quality.......but I prefer the VW..... just much easier to drive and has stronger engine .......

@@redbaymax2852 faux ! j'ai eu les deux et l'audi est au-dessus, arrêtez de dézinguer Audi et ne soyez pas jaloux de ceux qui ont des tunes pour s'en payer une !
That would be a hard decision to make, but I would go for the Golf too because of the engine. Good review!
I bought the Golf because I prefer the dashboard. I really wanted the Audi A3 but that dashboard is a big no no.
+TheAdventurable of course it doesnt look cheap, Its minimalistic and so beautiful
Those Audi air vents are watching you all the time.....aaaaargh!
More sports car have round vents, I’m not sure what’s girly about it.
buying audi without 2.0 or 3.0 engine is like having a gun without ammo...
It should say: buying an Audi without Quattro is like buying a gun without ammo.
Most people get the 1.6TDI engines or the TSI 1 litres. Literally no one bothers buying the 2 litres on a small car like that. In an A6 yes but even an A4 is fine with a 1.4 litre TSI engine
ANotoriousPickle yep, why would you tucking pay for the brand if its bot a quattro
Chatta290 you’re boring
ANotoriousPickle a3 and Golf got both haldex. Real quattro Starts with the a4
I lived for 14 years with a Golf MK3 don’t complain about the latest one please , all I have to say is reliable, but this stacks up for both cars since their parts a almost the same
8:42 3,2,1, Go! ... Nothing happens.
I like the MK7 Golf. Especially with that 1.5 engine.
Where’s the “shake the centre console” test like you did with Stinger Mat? Hmm?
yeah, I wonder why he didn´t do it there.. Oh yeah, I know the reason: its a German car, so it just HAS to be premium, right? -.-
5:18
that 1 millisecond "shake" without the camera focusing in on it? Seriously, i really like Matt and his reviews and he usually has a good and open minded opinion on all cars, but that Stinger review was just rubbish and totally biased towards Audi
Just a small sugestion. For the voice overs please get a better mic or try to calibrate the audio with the one from the video. Thanks!
Audi interior looks sad and empty in my opinion. I would go for GOLF 100%
Arseniy Tyurin it looks like that in pics in video, but when you sit in it it’s actually a really nice place to be
Arseniy Tyurin yes in the golf made of 100% plastic trash.
another no brain i give u advise read, learn, drive than comment oh the stupidity of people haven't limitness fucking damn world full of retards
Arseniy Tyurin what do you want from a poor man’s audi
You are really good at reviewing cars. Keep up the great work. Always see your videos. So thought I should stop by and appreciate Ur awesome work. They are simple, practical, informative and to the point. Looking forward to any more videos from you. Keep up the good work. God bless!!!! Cheers!!!👍
Ryan Burr
Golf Audi Sizes are bit bigger than the Min hatches such as VW Polo, Vauxhall Corsa, Seat Ibiza.
6 years late but it's mainly due to the limited space here. Hatches are just so much easier to park on our tight roads
Out of these two I’d would opt for the golf due to the engine. However I’d opt for a bigger engine and go with audi. Interior is also a massive factor. I have an A3 s line and still love the cabin.
I'd go for A3 2 litre. It has 150bhp.
I still love my a3 sline 2010 👌
When will manufacturers realise that a smaller engine doesn't mean more efficiency? The smaller it is the harder it has to work and the more fuel it burns.. ugh.
It's more about less emissions that drives the downsizing trend. Fuel economy remains the same problem, the harder you go the more fuel you burn.
Naude Retief I guess so.. But doesn't more fuel burn = more emissions? Haha I'm a simple guy...
manufacturers know exactly what they're doing :). it is the buyers who should be aware of all these marketing tricks.
adidicea true!
Do a comparison between VW golf, civic hatchback and Mazda 3 please
I need to know if the center consoles shake before making my purchase.
If your not getting the s line version of the a3, Then there’s no point getting an Audi A3, the s line version looks 100000000x better
Should’ve either used the Golf 1.0L in this test or the A3 1.4L
The volkswagen golf is hands down the best all rounder and it is pretty fun to drive i have the new face lift one with an automatic gearbox it’s such a good car
Just very pricey, a lot of people are reduced to getting the Polo for affordability which is just not the same experience.
couldn’t be more boring. a friend has the gti. and i had a jcw mini. the golf just makes you go to sleep interior exterior and driving
Why are people so pissed about CO2 scandal in VW? Last thing you care about when you are buying a car LOL
Exactly... if you care so much about the environment, buying a electric car won’t help !
Agree but makes you wonder what else VAG is lying about. Lying doesn't strengthen general credibility.
yeah the best thing to do is just remap a TDI, remove the DPF and EGR valves that is what they lied about those 2 components. More torque without them in
Especially when its thier DIESELS. People are ignorant as fuck nowerdays
How hard is it to count numbers properly and get both your CEOs arrested, then you poached BMW twice for new replacements. Their management has serious issues. Would you trust a car from cunts
Can anybody tell me what does Matt says about the Volkswagen logo in the beginning because I don't understand him what is he saying?
That it's pretty desirable among the masses, it's not prestige so you could call it masstige.
Arburon Morina he is trying to say that it doesn't look as posh as the Audi logo
Honestly I love pop out infotainment screens. When I'm not using it I don't want to have it sat there as a distraction or being in my line of sight. Plus it looks really cool.
totally wasnt expecting that result.. i really thought you were leaning toward the audi the entire review haha
Good review ... but wrong about the A3 interior, quality is excellent but design is extremely dull. Correct decision though with the Golf and I think it now has more exclusivity than the A3. They're common as muck now.
Again, fake exhausts. We never asked for it.
somebody get dis to 69 likes
Brought the Audi A3 Saloon Special Editions 2.0 TFSI Quattro Black Ed with the same load capacity as the sportsback. In my opinion the saloon looks miles better.
I second that. Sedan / Saloon / Limousine looks more premium.
No mention of the A3 with the 1.4 TFSI 150 PS cylinder on demand engine.
soon the 1.4 tsi get replace with the 1.5 tsi
Ha ha, I meant to put the 1.5 TFSI
I got the Audi A3 35 TFSI and it’s amazing
I prefer golf 5 door.
honestly all i see is that the red golf looks like the red angry bird and the black 5 door a3 looks like the black angry bird
I have a Fiesta ST 2013 and I was rubbing my eyes until they bled, I couldn't believe the ancient interiors of both of these 2018 cars. It's like playing Quake 1 with a bit higher res textures.
50 mph in 3rd gear? 4th or 5th would be better to show the pulling power.
I thought this exact thing. Who drives at 50mph in third gear? 🤔
Over 90 percent of components of those cars is identical, you pay thousands for literally a couple of touches..
so the golf beats the audi , damn , i was not expecting that...!
It's because the Audi had the worse engine.
They both have pretty much the same engine choices available.
How on earth did you come to that stupid conclusion is beyond me really...
eh....let me think....
Anis Toumi
Both are Volkswagen after all
It's basically the same car. You just pay for the brand if you choose the A3.
I wish that we could get the A3 hatchbacks in the States. It is so frustrating.
John Labus get the Kia Stinger
buy one used lol. I have an 09 A3 hatchback with the 2.0 turbo and quattro. Bought it for 10k with 52k miles. Absolute joy to daily drive
A good head-to-head would be a Golf-v-A3-v-Octavia-v-Leon. All the competing cars built on the MQB platform.
Underrated comment. Shame they still y haven't done this.
Sadly, the Golf has the cleaner and more mature interior. Specifically, I HATE the round air-vents on the A3. Looks very cheap 🤨
It looks way better when you actualy sit in the car trust me...
Supaa Dupaa Don’t get me wrong, I still like the A3 and S3 even more. I just wish Audi had used conventional rectangular air vents. A minor gripe for otherwise fantastic automobiles 👍🏻
The A3 gets a torsion beam on the 1.0 litre not multilink.
Seriously? On an Audi?! YIKES 😳😬
I have a golf and it does 201 miles a day and it has 180,000 miles and I can tell you it’s f**king bulletproof clean it inside and out and it’s new nothing broken by fault of the car
If it does the full school run
(Forward back forward back)
i had a GTI and I agree, 0 problems ever in the car.
The Audi still has same infotainment system. I prefer golf in general
Absolutely agree in that the five door A4 looks much better than the three door 👍
the 3 door A3 has much nicer proportions than the 5 door. Personally I'd go for this unless I needed the rear doors (which I dont).
Same, 5 door hatchbacks just look wrong. If you have a family get an estate.
the a3 looks so much better in the 3 door version.
had both, much prefer the golf
same engine, same wheel base, more leg room and boot space in the golf, and higher spec as standard.
oh, I had the 2ltr dsg tdi in both
Got myself a Seat Leon FR which looks miles sharper than both of these. Basically the same car but got a top spec FR with a few options for still less than the equivalent Golf and Audi
Jon M Me too, got a 3-door 1.8 TSI FR fully-loaded for a very good price, plus I think it looks better!
Sweet! Bet that's quick! Mine is a 1.4 (125hp). It definitely looks a lot sharper than the other two
Jon M It almost certainly has more than the 180hp they say it does, I rarely find myself wanting more power.
Do 3 doors have rear speakers as 5 doors have them in the rear doors?
012chris210 yes, they do.
Used to just be in the plastic panel under the window
Also the knobs in aluminium, great illumination, perfect steering wheel, nice punchy radio and refined infotaiinment that reads sms and emails, has google maps, weather, news, even football updates from the world cup - but you need to insert a sim card. oil intervals every 15k, service every 30k...go drive one, especially in S tronic gearbox in sport mode, switches gears quick and smooth. you get what you pay for...
you will not like the start stop thing, too jerky and slow, our is always off anyways as i don't like the strain on the starter motor..
You should do the Astra against the 308
ONYX.G shite v shite
I'm an Audi fan but the VW is a better buy, the A3 is basically a Golf with an Audi design. It makes sense if you really want a top of the line model but for sub 30k the Golf is better.
In this case it’s the golf that actually looks better in 3-door
Is the golf equivalent to the Audi A3?
As I’m considering getting the new 2019 Audi A3 that’s due to be announced soon I hope
Rather spend even more for a Golf GTI 👌PERFECT Sport & Looks
Before I saw this video in full I picked the Audi TFSI but after seeing it in full I'm going for the Golf. Lastly what about the Audi 1.4 TFSI how would that be?
Did you try to wobble the console. ....
Should have got the 5 door 1.5 version of the Audi, just does not make any sense making a comparison performance wise to non matching engines.
The entire video is pointless because they're different engine sizes. Comparing apples and oranges, they should have gotten a 1.5 A3. I know they factored in the price as well but if you're savvy enough you could buy a year older 1.5 A3 that would be the same price as the newer golf and d much more
Oh wait, where is the “center console shaking test” and “steeling wheel wobbling test”?
I’m just a poor pity boy that barely afford Asian wobbling steeling wheel,oh well premium quality German car just beyond my reach
Audi wouldn't wobble
yeo weekwong exactly! He is hard to take serious after the Stinger review
Maybe it doesnt happen in these cars tested. Thought of that?
Can you do the new Passat Alltrack?
I would say the A3 Sportback looks like an estate car and prefer the A3 in 3 doors looks more sporty but at expense of practicality.
Do the leon vs the golf
If i want "premium" i'll wait for the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class. I'm an expat in Stuttgart at the moment. The camo test versions are all over the place here. It looks great. And it will have a stunning interior.
DolleHengst Actually you can see the new interior on the net but to be honest in some places it looks really cheap unfortunately
roli22039 This a3 looks cheap from every single angle...and this moron says best interior in class. Audi is overrated.....to much
New A class looks like a fuckin Kia, look at the back, ugly!
The VW by default will come with adaptive cruise control and city braking (saved me a couple of times) which are two killer features not even mentioned in the review.
No brainier. Golf.
seat leon FR is the best choice
CarPassion typically seats have much worst construction quality and tend to have a lot more problems over time.
Leon is the prettiest of the 3 and the best value at buying time but I would go the extra mile and already get the VW, not the Seat.
I’m considering the a3 184 hp Quattro s line vs the golf gtd mk7.5 but I don’t know which one would be a better choice oh yea they’re both full options and around the same price
a3 sexy had 2 so far. 1 saloon & currently 5dr hatch
Do people really buy a 1-litre 3 cylinder engine for a C-Segment car? That engine would be suitable for a Polo or an A1, but for an A3, I think it is the worst choice you can do
I think the engine is ok, but maybe the car is TOO old
I'm using 1.0 seat leon and I have no problem with performance. In fact it can do 0-100kmh (or 0-60) in 9.6 seconds
Although I don't particularly like these small engines in larger cars, not long ago it was normal to have 1.4L - 1.6L naturally aspirated engines that produced far less torque. It wouldn't be my choice (1.8 TSI suits me well), but I could live with one.
Doruk Unal its not even the performance, big car small engine...not a long term smart idea, problems all the way
James Borb it's way better that you think... I fact even a5 has it and since BMW n merc are copy cats expect it in 1series/A series ..
In the US, the one to buy is a Toyota product instead. #2 perhaps a Honda. But only if you want reliability.
True, it's annoying that you can't have both reliability and features plus comfort.
I have had both cars....Audi is more solid, more quite and better interior quality.......but I prefer the VW..... just much easier to drive and has stronger engine .......
Can't order a new 3 door A3 in the UK anymore, as Audi have dropped it. You should have mentioned that.
We want an rs4 2018 review!
carwow, what about golf gte and a3 etron, especially can’t find any decent review for etron, any plans to review those?
I for one prefer the pop out screens. In fact, with the digital dials i would probably want to keep that screen hidden most of the time!
You could do a VW Golf/Polo vs New Seat Ibiza
A3 the best car ever , i want to buy A3
Will you review a Vw T-Roc?
