If you are just looking for the essentials: "The 6 Rudiments you really need" - ua-cam.com/video/jkrhDXM6KVY/v-deo.html
"If it feels good, and you can achieve your goals, it is correct"
I wish more teachers and mentors would say this. There's such a thing as troublesome method and practice, but if you achieve your goal you're doing it right. That's a like from me
I disagree. Drummers can accelerate wrist decay by holding the palms facing sideways. Palms should face the ceiling, it's more natural movement, less strain, and more efficient. There is a legitimate reason for these 'troublesome' techniques. Thankfully I've never experienced fried wrists but plenty of drummers have, so why start out from the get-go with a bad habit?
@@warrengamameilhardin hadn't even considered that but it's a really good point.
Guess there's usually a good reason for it when people stick to one method like this, experts tend to know what they're talking about.
Thank you for explaining it, I never would have known.
I'm genuinely happy, as a percussion educator, that *this* is one of the first videos you'd find when searching for rudiments on UA-cam.
This should be compulsory viewing for ANY drummer - not just beginners. Well made, no-nonsense and superb technique. It must be 35+ years since I 'bothered' to go through all the rudiments like this! What a brilliant refresher. Thanks for making the video :-)
Hi Shane, thank you so much for you nice words! You are absolutely right. No ones ever good enough to not go back to the foundations and work on the rudiments. Have a great day!
Shane Waterman.. Throwing the stick is good for drags
Think of it this way...Athletes still warm-up with basics and practice the fundamentals of their sport (to maintain their edge and to make those fundamentals habits). Professional musicians still do lang tones, scales etc., for the exact same reasons. Percussionists should as well (besides they are fun to play).....I too am a 35 year player (started when I was 12, now I'm 47)!
Not sure about superb technique... his traditional grip is a tad weak. No hating here, but most any intermediate corps-style player could out-drum him, rudimentarily. Who knows, he may just be relaxing it for the slower tempo or the simpler rudiments. He may shape it up some when actually playing music. I agree that it's a good video and a good demo overall.
Same. I'm 42, and been drumming since 5th grade. I haven't gone through all my rudiments for probably 10-12 years.
" This is quite hard so take it slow"
*Plays it faster than any other rudiment*
Really wasn't on purpose.. I always hate it when people do that. Haha
you can just put it in slow mow its more easier :)
A teacher’s got to assert dominance somehow!
Complains on a free tutorial video*

nice video
I'm dipping my toes into the world of drumming for the first time this month and this feels like exactly what I need to get started. Thank you so much for making this video!
I've been playing self-taught for almost 20 years and just recently I've been getting into rudiments and basic techniques, something I've always lacked because I figured out my own kinda flawed ways. It's not like I couldn't play at all, but I havn't had as much progress in many years as after getting back to the basics. I hope you found this video as useful as I did and you still play. :)
This is my actual bible right now. You have no idea how much this is, and will continue, to help me learn. Thank you!
Hope you're happy with your progress, I can't wait to really dig into these, but right now my neighbors would kill me, even with a practice pad.
Finally a good tutorial video on rudiments by someone who doesn't talk more than they teach.
“If it feels good, and you can achieve your goals, it is correct.”
Beautifully said 👍
What an incredible lesson!! Thank you!
Thanks a lot, really appreciated! Dude, you got an amazing channel! Gonna record some new stuff now and after that I am going to spend my sunday evening with watching some more of your videos!
Bro you here too

i am 65 years old now, but i attended many classical music courses, Simply Awesome . Thank you .
Please continue. I love to read music first then play. my drums This is my meditation. Thanks again
I like it a lot. I started playing the drums when I was already 40 years behind in practice. Easy to follow and finally a drummer who doesn't try to impress with mad speeds. Think I will get through them all. Good job
Thank you very much, Marcel. My goal is always to make videos with high quality educational content.. I leave the mad speed skills to other drummers ;-)
You explained these rudiments better than any drum teacher I ever had. Good job!
Thank you very much!
Awesome video! I've been playing for 25 years but never had any lessons, this is great for all drummers no matter how long you been playing.
I was lucky to learn the 26 standard rudiments in 1971 at the age of 9. When I turned 11 my mom bought Spectrum by Billy Cobham. I had that whole album mentally transcribed by the age of 11. They help you figure stuff out real quick.
Spectrum is definitely one of the greatest Album ever. Thanks for watching!
to mentally transcribe Spectrum by the age of 11 is pretty awesome! Congrats! Do you still play? Very often child prodigies have trouble bringing their craft into adulthood
i think by now everybody here knows your life's story.
For me it happened exactly the same just a bit earlier. I did start at the age of 3 and a half years, mastering all 40 rudiments at 5.3 years old. i was quite brilliant at it
“If it feels good and you can achieve your goals, it is correct” wow can this be the motto for my life? Thank you
Flamtastic! All 40 drum rudiments demystified in half an hour.
This would have been a great title for the lesson.. Thanks for watching!

Very valuable video for those who are new to drumming.
Very clear explanations and exact samples.
Beautiful job good lad.
i honestly have no clue if u check this video anymore but, just wanted to say, this video is the reason i learned my rudiments for all region. thank you for this
Of course I check this video ;-)
Thank you very much!
I’ve been playing for well over 20 years and I still practice rudiments. Always stay true to your foundational
lessons. I can’t tell you how many songs have basic rudiments built in just around the kit and at varying speeds.
So practice these before you play any song or anything else for the day.
So far this is the best demonstration of rudiments I've seen--names are given, time stamps are given, an explanation is given before each exercise, and then you show how it's done. Good work.
Couldn't agree more. It's kinda cool to see this much appreciation and excitement for his work throughout the comment section.
Agreed. I've been playing drums now for 2 months (bass player for 4 decades) and this lesson is my practice pad go to every day. If I can only play the kit or the pad due to time constraints, at this point in my learning I always go to the pad. And this video.
In all seriousness, I've just gone through these for the first time. Fantastic. And the notation is brilliant. Makes it feel like a proper lesson.
Thank you very much, really appreciate it!
Keep coming back to this! Peace and blessings y’all
Excellent video. I must admit, your accent forced me to listen more closely, and as a result, I’m retaining a lot more. I learned something about myself today.
If you learn these 3 rudiments, it will carry you through the rest of your drumming life: Single stroke roll, double stroke roll, and single paradiddle. That's all you need to know, the other 100s are just for variations
Exactly what I have been looking for- clear, concise drum basics. Great vid, thanks
That was amazingly fantastic. I could see your technique, described early on the video, through all of the demos. Perfectly done.
This is brilliant! Really informative, really well explained, excellently laid out, couldn’t ask for better thank you!
Hands down, best rudiments tutorial EVER, bravo!
Love those professional hand grips, relaxed but yet precise and accurate
Eureka, thank you for the graphic explanation of the differences between stroke rolls. Been scratching my head for an understanding of the nomenclature until now!
Great video lesson. Will be using this in practice from now on. Thanks for posting it.
Thank you for taking the time to put this together. It is very well though out, put together and executed. I have been playing for 34-years, learn by ear, create by feel. ..and never learned the rudiments. After watching this, I realize that I use many of them in my playing...because it felt like what should have been played. This video has inspired me to learn them all. Thank you.
Hey John, great to hear that.. Have fun with all these!
Perfect explanation! Respect!
one of the best drum tutorials for rudiments i’ve seen! thank you!
This is the clearest and most structured rudiment class I've seen! Thank you
0:52 that’s what she said
haha!
XD
.....done until next rudiment.....lol
I only started playing recently and was self taught, watching this and practicing some of these really helped me understand some concept I was struggling with- I loved this, thanks for the great help :)
Just the exact video I was looking for. Thank you and God bless!
Super helpful, really enjoy n appreciate your straightforward and explanative teaching style. You've helped my playing immensely over the better part of the last year I've been watching. Keep up the great work my friend!!!!
This is UNREAL! GREAT VIDEO! 👍 THANK YOU 🙌
Really like this presentation! I learned rudiments by rote with slightly different sticking. Good to know and moves me to take another look. Thanks for new challenge!
Excellent review. Clear and well structured. Practice these on a regular basis and you will have a great arsenal to play with.
Greatly enjoyed this. Started on drums in 2000 and really haven't done any work on rudiments since that first year. Had a blast playing along/re-learning/learning this stuff.
I am just starting out on the drums and have watched multiple videos on rudiments. This is by far the clearest and best lesson I've seen until now especially because you also talked about hand technique and grip before even doing the first exercise. Thank you man! Also Grüße aus Bayern!
A very helpful sticking techniques while doing essential Rudiments!
What if we try to take those rudiments to the practice pads of our videos?
I practice the rudiments from this video everyday! Thank you so much for this lesson.
This was the best drum lesson I've ever seen. Played all 40! Thank you and subscribed!
Your German accent is very convincing.
Sorry - trying to be funny. Good lesson. The question I have is that when the stick is loose don't you lose control a bit. My drum teacher says 'every note must be meant'. but when it's loose i feel the stick is doing the work not my wrist.
haha.. that actually was pretty funny. I am working hard on my accent ;-)
At a certain tempo you have to "let loos" and let the stick do more work. But at lower tempos you are right. Control is the key.
Your language accent is perfect right where it is. Great video, thanks. You pointed out at least one really big thing I have not heard others say. Practically all others either work with a click exclusively or instruct to work with a click, from which a logical, but faulty, inference could be made that even while working on, initially developing one's ability to do something, one should use a click. Thanks, again.
Thanks Rick, really appreciate it. I think that this "always work with a click mentality" is somewhat dangerous. Because as you said, especially when you start to practice something you should, never do it with a click. Get your mechanics down first, before you distract yourself with other things.
But I am sure there are lots of other drummers telling you something different. ;-)
Dude your accent is awesome don't change anything. Also great lesson.
thank you.. i just got a practice pad and a snare stand today, and while i was reading through some books with rudiments, i ventured off to youtube instead.. your lesson is definitely very helpful and will be a great resource to keep on coming back to..
definitely subscribed..
Thank you very much.. Welcome to the family!
You are an awesome teacher, thank you very much for recording this!!!
Amazingly organized, clear and precise with good knowledge and skill. Thank you!
Your channel has taught me more than all the other channels I looked through combined. Thanks for being a great teacher
Looks like I picked the correct channel to commence my drum journey 🙏🏼
Very good presentation, thanks. Excellent production. I'm starting right at the beginning so info on holding sticks is appreciated.
Very impressed by this lesson. I learned so much in the very beginning. Thank you so much!!!!
Great demonstrations. Straight to the point and your playing is very clean.
I’m a beginner and have just started on drums - apart from studying music and playing guitar for 10 years, I’m having so much more fun on drums lol - I guess it’s good to start here? Fantastic lesson I’ll be working my way through it :)
I’ve been out of a music program for a long time and felt stuck. This isn’t only a great refresher of tools I already have, it’s a bit nostalgic for me and your attitude is inspiring as well :) Thank you
Thank you very much, Emily!
This is great! Totally comprehensive and wonderful introduction to creating so many sounds on a drum. I am a bass player and just started on drums. I had a suspicion there was a whole world of different ways to create rhythm and tone on a drum set. Now I have a whole universe on a single one. Thank you!!
Probably the most informative and well presented instructional vid on the rudiments - very impressed and I learned a lot, thank you
you are great, thanks for giving us some of your precious time and teach us these great lessons!
You are very welcome, thank you for stopping by!
So kind of you to share the pdf! Much appreciated, your videos are extremely helpful to this dedicated beginner.
Hi Matthew, it's great to hear that you enjoy my videos. Thank you for watching!
Thank you for the very instructive lesson. I liked the clear breakdown and need to knows of the techniques involved. I'll try this!!
Just what I was looking for, and well put together. Thanks and keep it up!
When I was 9 there were 26 rudiments. I learned them all plus a few solos. when I turned 11 my mom got me a new record by Billy Cobham. I set up my drums and figured it all out by my knowledge of rudiments. when I was 15 Cobham came to our practice since he knew a horn instructor that he marched with in the Hurricanes.
Iv been drumming for 14 years. iv decided I need to devote at least an hour a day for 3 months to work on these. I hope it improves my drumming and my left hands when I take it to the whole kit. I have not done these rudiments since high school band class. The hardest things is the double strokes with my left hand really hoping next months I can get my left as good as my right.
Hey, that sounds like a great plan! Would be great to comment again in 3 month and let me know how it is going!
Oh it will help believe me. Especially the flam rudiments if you do them on the tom toms as well. For the rolls, add in the hi hat foot and kick drums at the same time and go from single stroke quarter note to double stroke eight note to double stroke sixteenth note to double stroke thirty second note - and then repeat backwards while keeping kick drum on one and three and hi hat foot on two and four. It sounds complicated but it's not if you start slow and build up.
Have you been practicing them? :)
So ? What is the result on the kit ?
I keep coming back to this video. Its such a useful resource for learning technique and notation. Thanks
Thank you, I feel very confident with your instructions and will be watching your video periodically. You are a teacher! ❤️🙏🏾👌🏼
Perfect teacher. Easy to grasp. 10/10
I’m looking for Rudiments/techniques to play nice and fast sounding combos for Handpan playing.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks for sharing 💗
Excellent easy to follow video with all rudiments played at a speed we can follow. Look forward to seeing more from you.
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to leave a comment!
I recently started drumming, and we just got into rudiments.. this was so helpful for me, thank you!
Fantastic lesson. You take it off the page of my drum book and make the notation real for my ears. Thank you for mixing the notation in with your examples. It helps me get my ears and my eyes working with the sound of my strikes.
Great video. I’ve been away from my kit for ten years and these are helping me get my chops back
Very cool.. Welcome back!
You are awesome....I think your 40 tricks will make a perfect drummer.
Thanks a lot!
really loved the logic putting rudiments in groups
My daughter is in her third year of drum and this is the most comprehensive lesson we've come across. Thank you so much for your help! ❤️
Great video man, you're really helpin me out. I just recently started learning how to play snare so i could do indoor percussion in my music program and this is a great way to practice at home. Plus no one knows im doing indoor except the director and so far hes been impressed how far ive come in my 2 weeks so far. Keep it up man
That is great to hear, my friend! Thanks for watching.
Great job! You packed so much value into such a short amount of time!
Thank you very much, Susan!
I was in drum corps twice on the snare line as a teenager and played drum kit for 53 years as a pro. I also teach and we only had 28 rudiments back in the day. Frank Briggs has an excellent video out since the 80's, but your video is great! This type of rudiment work improved my time behind the drum set as well. Great job! Go DCI
That was the best rudiment lesson I have every seen, it was explained and played perfectly I will continue learning and practicing the rudiments and working them in to my kit develop some great solos Thank so much I truly appreciate,
Thanks a lot! I've been teaching myself to play for almost 10 years now and I'm just now learning about rudiments. This was a really well explained video.
I am glad I could help!
That was excellent! Thanks for a very precise and uncluttered presentation.
Thank you for the instruction on the 40 essential rudiments. It was very helpful I look forward to more help on developing speed.
Your inner teacher is very well.He is describing everything in less effort.....thank you so much for your helping hand
You are very welcome, thanks for watching!

I'm starting out and this video is helping me more than I can possibly imagine now!
Incredibly helpful. Love it.
Thanks for this video on the fundamentals of drumming. Excellent job on the mechanics and technicalities of what the rudiments are all about.
You are welcome, Daryn. Thank you for watching!
Wow - I can only imagine how much work went into making this video! Very well done, and thank you!
Oh yes, this is by far the most intense video I did so far. Thanks for checking it out!
the single stroke seven is one of my favorite rolls/rudiments and it really helped me progress. also very useful for a multitude of musical genres
You are the perfect person to teach me drum stuff right now. Thank you for this!
Brilliant video!! Perfect refresher for experienced drummers and well explained for beginners. The best drum tuition I've found on the web so far. Thanks for making this video!!
Wow, that is so nice. Thanks a lot!
Excellent video, thanks. I really appreciate the concise explanation of the sticking techniques and the patterns, should keep me busy for at least a year! Great hands dude.
Thanks a lot, bro! Have a fun!
Brilliant exercises, so clear and precise, but a lot to take in, practice and patience is all that's needed.
After watching countless videos on rudiments this is the one. They look easy to play now that I understand what they are and how to play them. He was playing pretty quick but seemed like the perfect speed to really feel the rhythm of it. This video helps a lot, Thank you! Subbed for sure
This is a great educational video.
Thanks for sharing your practice and work!
Take care,

Thanks a lot for stopping by AJ, really appreciate your support!
para-diddles are key to drum life. If your drumming is feeling stale these will do the trick.
Couldn't agree more.
This is brilliant! Absolutely everything needed to improve technique.
