  • Fingers are one of the three main mechanics of drumming. It's important to do exercises that isolate the fingers to develop better control and awareness of movement. Application is often the most difficult part of this technique. This video demonstrates isolation and dexterity building exercises along with useful ways to apply the technique.
    0:00 Introduction
    2:41 Exercise 1: Shifting Fingers
4:00 Exercise 2: Adding and Removing Fingers

    7:05 Exercise 4: Switching Fulcrums
    8:43 Exercise 5: Rapid Fire
    10:22 Application: Relaxing the Wrists
11:18 Application: Rotating French Grip to American Grip

As a self taught drummer at 60 years old ,when I watch you videos I clearly see why I have skill gaps in certain areas , but at 60 I’m still learning . Thank you.

@@MariaWulfMusic at 60 I’m not trying to compete with anyone with my playing , UA-cam will show you really fast that there are 10 year olds that can clean you clock . I’m just trying to enjoy finding answers to why I could never play certain things . This video gives me insight into that . Thanks.

I have had lessons from a city orchestra percussion leader, another guy that only put me on stick control on snare, only. I lost interest in him, I was 11. Lessons from a decent teacher from a music store, and also from a multiplatinum celebrity drummer, and maybe someone I am spacing out, then I worked in a music store with a daily visit from various pro's that would hang out, do clinics, and many drummers on a daily basis, still it was this video that finally showed and explained this technique and how to practice it. Great lesson, thank you.

I strugged with finger technique (or a lack thereof) for years. With your exercises I already see progress very quickly, it's like I finally get it now. The third exercise did the trick for me, together with rotating between French and match grip. That was exactly what I was doing wrong, I was doing finger drumming with French and then "normal" drumming with match grip

Thanks for the drum lesson I've been playing since the '70s and took a break for like 25 years working on the road doing sound and then now I'm getting back into it in my early '60s and this is a technique I only remember from timpani in school but you made it a lot more simpler which that makes it great so more speed more control thanks I just ran across your channel a few months ago really enjoy the in-depth teaching thank you very much
