I think what makes movies like X and Pearl so deeply haunting is that they clearly reflect the cultural anxiety that we women constantly have in society; when you're young and "beautiful", you're seen as an over-praised object instead of a person and then when we age, we somehow loose our value in society's eyes that we're seen as worthless or tossed aside like yesterday's garbage. We are both Maxine and Pearl and I have a feeling that in the third movie, Maxine is most likely going to go through the same fate that Pearl went through, basically proving the point right. It's sad but it's the uncomfortable truth.

I actually hadn’t really thought about that flipside of ‘if you’re young you’re assumed to be a vapid object and not perceived with depth.’ That’s a rlly interesting take. And yeah I’m so intrigued to see where they take Maxine’s character in the third film to see if she suffers a similar fate of feeling bitter and overlooked. Can’t wait for that to come out!!

@@rachellydiab Me too! And I hope Mia Goth wins an Oscar. She truly deserved it when she was Pearl. When she played Pearl, she was like a mix of Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and Norman Bates. She has talent and she totally has a long career ahead of her.

I'm so pleased somebody with some reach has finally said this stuff - I've been telling friends about the themes in this clever film (an elevated slasher, who'd have predicted it?) for a while now, so it's nice to see it spoken about here too.
In an age where beauty standards are ever more unattainable, yet seemingly more 'important', where sex appeal is both currency and validation, the real horror of this film is that it forces our exfoliated, moisturised little faces right up against the crusty visage of our inevitable fate!
Like Maxine, we are all funnelled by contemporary culture (in our case youtube celebrity, TV talent show success, instagram model follows) into the belief that we can be stars, special....but in the end the vast majority of us will learn that Maxine's fate is Pearls fate is OUR fate. Murder plot thread notwithstanding, we are Maxine. We are Pearl.
I have a feeling that some of those frivolously making the uncharitable comments you talk about here will come to understand the true meaning of this film in time, and despair.
As an aside, I still haven't seen Pearl yet - hope it's as good as everyone says. Also, I've only seen about three of your videos so far, but I absolutely love the content of those.

I love the way you wrote about this 💜It's a societal bias that's always gotten my skin, and works perfectly in the horror realm. The mirroring of the characters is perfection.
Enjoy Pearl and thank you for your kind words!! x

the "old people" weren't actually old tho, the odd make up choices added to the uncanny horror aspect of the sex scene id say, it wasn't just horrifying to see oldies fucking, the scene was overtly styled as horrific and uncomfortable. i cant think of an example rn... but i know theres old age sex scenes in cinema that aren't as inherently horrific lol maybe unusual and not as visually tasty, but the horror was added in not inherent, in my opinion

Love the way you both presented this one you seem like a sweet couple. Only just discovered your reviews but really enjoying what I've seen so far. The movie is great as a thrill ride but also as you stated there are some interesting deeper points. The old people sex seen didn't tantalise me but it did seem a natural interaction between two characters albeit psychotic ones but none the less a couple in love which age should not be a limit to. Hope you get to do a review of Pearl as I love most movie reviews but particularly ones which disect and explore more than just what we immediately observe. Best of luck for the future.

hahah thank you! The sex was so sensationalised by audiences, but i saw Howard and Pearls intimacy as really necessary to the story - and i actually think quite tender.
When Maxxxine comes out I’ll probably look at the whole series again!
      Thank you for watching x

Recently found your channel and have been binging your videos! I love the way you speak, I love the research that you do, love your make up and thoughtful outfit choices. Pretty much everything about your videos!
And it took me way too long to realize that you were literally sitting on top of someone. Love that detail. So fitting for X.

I didn't know anything about the film when I went to see it in cinema (it was just being screned when I had time to go see a film so I saw that one) but immediatley loved it when the annoying hypocrite actually dies first. and I loved all the rest of it, even though I'm not a slasher fan. but this is scary in the fun way, it's sexy, it has depth... what's not to love?
wasn't aware of several of the mentioned details. good thing I watched this video.

For me, the portrayal of "old people fcuking as horror" is embeded in the film itself, it doesn't feel like an interpretation. It's my main problem with this movie and why it left bad taste in my mouth. Hearing you framing it as just an ungenerous interpretation is very odd to me!
