For a long time I couldn't even think of Midsommar because the fans had gotten it so wrong. Every time someone said that it has a happy ending I clenched my fists. I am happy that we are now moving towards the consensus that the she was groomed by a cult.
I think it took a lot of the audience time to realize how much the film brainwashes us as the viewer in order for some of the opinion to shift. This movie continues to haunt me. I love it.
And irl what would have been more likely is that the cult would have been an abusive man who swoops in to save the day only to be am even bigger danger to her
When Pele said that his parents died in a fire, and then later on in the film you see folks who actually volunteer to go into the little yellow house with the bear and legit get lit on fire, it got me thinking that maybe Pele was smudging the truth a little bit: I'm pretty sure that by saying his parents died in a fire, he's omitting the part where they volunteered to do it. I could be wrong, but that's the connection that clicked in my brain.
In my opinion, this aspect of mirroring someone else's emotions was a perfect expression of how, in a cult, the individual ceases to be distinct and instead becomes part of the community. The problem of our times is increasing loneliness, a sense of isolation, and lack of belonging, which were once fulfilled through the religious community of a given society. It was precisely this need for closeness with others that was satisfied for Dani - where she found a group of people who experienced her emotions together with her (mirroring), among whom she felt understood (the scene during the dance where Dani speaks Swedish), noticed and appreciated (becoming the May Queen and her relationship with Pelle) and she felt with them like with family (seeing her mother). I think the sex scene was also perfectly arranged, as it shows how strongly sexuality is controlled in cults, and the presence of the other women represented that Maia, in this case, was part of the community that was with her even in this most intimate moment of sex, experiencing it alongside her and having complete insight into her experience. I think the scene you mentioned, where one woman got involved to help, relates to the fact that Christian couldn’t achieve orgasm, so she began stimulating his prostate.
Amazing video! In first part, when you talked about fire motive in illustrations, I immediately remembered about midsummer tradition in my culture. It's believed that in this day Sun is bathing in lakes. Fire and water connecting to each other and become one. And, like in the movie, it's day of fertility, man's (fire) and woman's (water) energies. Interesting how different cultures can be intertwined like that.

I love the way you used "Waltz of the Flowers" as the soundtrack to your video. Especially how it started quietly and then got louder and louder. At first I couldn't quite recognize it, but by the time Dani is dressed as the May Queen and is burdened by that heavy mantle of flowers that she drags along in front of the burning barn (Or as my kid Fox named it, "The Naughty Sexy Shed With the Weird Old Lady") the melody was full blown and obvious. Perfect. The film is full of beautiful and terrible imagery, like a fairy tale. I think Dani will last as the May Queen for longer than a year--there was something about how the full ritual is done cyclically--like a nine year cycle or something? But at any rate, I think she'll stay with them with Pelle as her lover, and they'll have a child together.
I'm so glad you caught that! Thank you, I thought it paired nicely with the climax of Midsommer. "The naughty sexy shed" is definitely what I'll be calling it from now on! I agree that she will likely stay with Pelle and have his children. As curious as I am about what comes after the ending, I hope they never follow it up with a sequel. It's a perfect ending and I think thats why it stirs up discussion.

Something that always stuck with me is how at the end, they tell the two people in the barn that by ingesting whatever substance they were given, they wont feel pain/fear. Obviously this was a lie and the guy started screaming once he caught fire. I feel like it was implied that whatever they gave them paralysed them just like Christian, so they can't run away once they realize they've been lied to their whole life. Same with the old man committing suicide earlier on. He was probably told his whole life that he wont feel pain when taking his life, only for that to happen. Idk that was my takeaway at least.

I watched Midsommar for a movie club thing and when one of the girls said: oh, the ending was so beautiful, I cried as I cried in Hereditary (she was very straight so I understand she wasn't projecting your homophobic grandma coming from the grave to MAKE YOU HETERO feelings), I was like????? Ma'am, they picked the whitest white people to breed and join the cult???? They slaughtered the brit couple first because both looked mixed or straight up not white, but the white whiteys???? doesn't it feel weird???? Also, I'm kinda suspicious about the tree the other guy pissed on - was it really sacred? Or they made it up on a whim? They already wanted to off him, he could have pissed on a toilet and it would have been the sacred toilet reserved for the elders or whatnot. Also, they totally lured the scholar friend into death, they knew he would go after that sweet sweet never seen before evidence for his PhD.... Just, you are the first person I hear voicing they killed every single non-white (and the guy everyone hated but alas) first.
IMO, mark wasn’t viable because of his demeanour. He’s too aggressive and wouldn’t be easy to control. Josh was too smart and not white. So Christian just fit the bill perfectly as did Dani. Although, I thought it was implied that Mark has a sexual encounter with one of the Harga women before he is killed so they could’ve used him for that purpose and then discarded him.
I agree with your point about her being blonde with blue eyes. I remember the British guy that stayed there having quite piercing blue eyes and being very at ease with everything. His accent tells us he must have gone there as an adult, but he was allowed to stay. That has me thinking that a likely outcome for her is that she assimilates, and marries Pelle to have children with him (for gene pool reasons).
