I filmed this way back in Feb and wasn't aware that Garlands latest Civil War was on the cusp of release - I didn't feel like it merited re-writing any of this essay, but just in case you were wondering I think the same critiques mentioned throughout the video mostly apply to the women of Civil War too. Men's portrayal in Men is awful. As a male, I couldn't relate to a single male character in it. This is similar to A Handmaid's Tale for me. Vilify men who are horrible people, not men.

    I think it would have been really cool if we were made to believe, alongside Cecilia, that there were supernatural stuff behind everything so we could find out that it was actually scientific all along. Also, yes, her being happy with the situation and later understanding it was not a miracle but an act of abuse leading to her ending the child would have been amazing.

    I realised everything wrong with immaculate when I watched the first omen . The reason behind the absolute horror was more convincing and was really built up well unlike immaculate which feels like they made up the twist towards the end rather than it being the centre after the story .

    You could make a case for the many Dickens novels evoking fairytales of sorts. Great Expectations and Oliver Twist both have rags to riches plots evoking many fairytales, A Christmas Carol has the whole ghost story angle and David Copperfield is essentially a gender reversed Cinderella.

    ughhh, hearing people say Annihilation is "the way" to do an all-women cast it just reminds me of how these mouth breathers are just as likely to say "this is the way" to queer rep that is functionally heterosexual where you could just swap the genders to a straight couple and zero nuance is lost. It's like these people only want the most processed depiction that is functionally just a character swap. No depth, no consideration, and no substance for the choice or direction. It's honestly wild to see because it not only erases context but it also whitewashes real world context. I don't know what else to call this except "rebranded tokenization"

    As an offshoot of embracing the visceral horror of feminity, I also like horror monsters that are feared that I relate to as an autistic person. Since I was always seen as weird anyway, it was comforting to be feared enough for people to let me be instead of acting on their disgust by bullying me. Playing into their fear and disgust kept them from being worse to me and people like me, so for a long time I related to monsters and generally found myself sympathising with non-human characters far more often than any human POV protagonist (which is why I didn't like reading teen fantasy and similar genres of book, because the "quirky girl" protagonists were exactly like the people - boys and girls - who acted monstrously towards people like me).

She plays what was written as a male character. I love directors who use her androgynous look to advantage. This movie is such a fever trip that leaves you like wtf. Lol. Markos? Another amazing video! I love your level of research & fun way of explaining things. This is the first vid mentioning Suspiria 2018 I've seen that references the Les Medusees dance performance (maybe I have not found the right vids tho). I found it really interesting that the film went with costumes that were more modest than what the original dancers wore. The entire film had costumes that inspired me as well. Also love the inclusion of the amazing costumes worn by Marie Laveau in Coven. As a fellow thin-lipped girly, as much as I love Anya Chalotra as Yennefer in the Witcher, in the books, she was one of the few heroic witches to have thin lips & still be considered a beautiful, romantic lead character. If you are taking suggestions for other supernatural or horror fashion-y icons in film, may I suggest mermaids/ sirens, elves, or the more malevolent fae vs. the cutesier fairies? I feel like all three have influenced clothing trends as well as makeup & hair!

    I've always read everything through the lens of projection- like everytime the virginal woman made it out alive, I always read it as men believe that they are bad. They're thinking : that when they touch us they are harming us and women who like self harm will eventually die. They believe their touch is poison. Again, men think they're responsible for everything. Good, Bad, everything.

    Interesting take. I loved Men and was annoyed by all the reactionary discourse. I don’t find it worthwhile to speculate on a creator’s internal process, intentions, or “right” to comment on a particular subject. I care about the end result. FYI, the film Annihilation has a cast of leading women because the novel has a cast of leading women. So that’s less on Garland and more on Jeff Vandermeer (great book, worth reading even if you’ve seen the movie already)

    11:00 On that note, just yesterday I read a very alarming comment on Instagram. The topic from the slides was "to women who chose to be the other woman, why?" In the comments, one person confessed that when she was 15, a 34 year old friend of her dad's had groomed her. However, she framed the whole thing as flirting, not grooming, and that it was HER fault. That she, a 15 year old, had been flattered and excited about the attractive older man being interested in her and had willingly played along. She expressed that later on she felt guilty about flirting with him since he was a married man with kids. Despite being an adult while writing the comment, it was very clear that she still didn't understand that what had happened to her was grooming. A flood of people responded, telling her the fact that she was a victim, that he had groomed her, and that none of that could possibly have been her fault. Her response was that while in retrospect it's obvious now that it's been pointed out to her, she can't bring herself to FEEL like she was groomed. At the time it happened, she felt in control. At the time, she felt safe and happy this was happening. To the point that, even as an adult, she can't fully comprehend that she was a victim or that what happened to her was his fault, not hers. And that is such a dangerous thing. It's very clear that what happened to her DID affect her; even as an adult, her judgement on the situation is warped. She is clearly primed to view such situations as normal, or to blame the child involved. It's so damn insidious and I can't help but wonder how many grown women are walking around with that same mentality, likely perpetuating it. Is it more common to have that attitude than to be fully traumatized by it? How many women out there blame themselves? How many of them blame the child?

    I had a really unique experience with this film as I grew up! My favorite book as a child was Outside Over There by Maurice Sendak, which I experienced before ever watching Labyrinth. Did you know Outside Over There is an inspiration for Labyrinth? If you look closely, it’s one of the books in her bedroom at the start of the film! I can’t tell you how shocked I was when I watched Labyrinth for the first time in my tween years with my younger sister. We both recognized the structure of the story immediately! It’s no surprise I loved the movie and she hated it-she understandably never liked the position of being the younger sibling who got replaced by the goblins’ changeling. She made me promise I’d never “say my right words” so the goblins would take her away! 💕😂

    • @LittleMsAlto
      @LittleMsAlto 3 дні тому

      In Outside Over There, young Ida has the responsibility of caring for her baby sister while her Papa is away at sea and Mama in the arbor (emotionally absent). One night when she’s practicing her wonder horn and not looking, the baby is stolen by goblins and replaced by a changeling of ice! She decides to save her sister by donning her mother’s yellow raincoat and escaping backwards out the window into “outside over there”. I’ll leave the rest a mystery for you to enjoy if you’re interested! And if you become even more interested, there is an entire book dedicated to exploring how and why Maurice Sendak wrote specifically this book!! The book is called There’s a Mystery There: The Primal Vision of Maurice Sendak by Jonathon Cott. Incredible read. I learned that Outside Over There was an enormous feat for Sendak that helped him process his deep trauma of seeing the deceased Lindbergh baby (sadly kidnapped then murdered) in the newspaper as a young child himself in 1932. He said the creation of this book was how he saved the baby in a way he couldn’t as a child, and that he nearly died himself trying to finish it! I’m amazed how people continue to inspire one another and how art continues to inspire art.
