Cory Henry jamming at Namm 2016 with his friend and fellow Funk Apostle Nicholas Semrad! Nick Semrad has a cool podcast worth checking out called “Grid Kids.” Join our Discord community here: discord.com/invite/xBmYHcm46u
Sheet music trivia (first to answer correctly gets PDF): what broken expectation led to Cory’s stank face at 1:48?
The chord substitution Nick used.
Nick used this super cool dominant chord, and changed the key, and Cory liked that 🤣
Instead of the established F --> Em7 --> Am7 --> C (?), he uses a magical slash dominant chord Db/E to get to the major A13?
Seems like Nick wanted to change keys (played Asus, potentially moving to D?) but Cory didn't follow thd change and still played C. That part of the jam sounded off, to be honest.
@@karlpoppins That's what I was thinking first time I listened! "ah there's a key change on the way... oh"
The title of this video should be "When you realize your partner is ALSO a genius."
These two are both truly amazing.
That’s the point. It applies for both of them!
the person transcribing this is also a genius
The cameraman, too.
AND i ?
Its AI. The person isn't actually doing it.
That would be software.
Who is this AI guy they're talking about who is transcribing the music?
I love the way musicians communicate through music. No words, just music and body language. Looks so awesome.
3:11 he even made the piano say DAMN
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
who's the genius now
Corey Henry is insane. If only this guy was as famous with his actual published music as he is with his legendary improvs
I trust his process. I can see his funk stuff getting as popular as Vulfpeck's in some time. I feel like he just need the right format to make larger audiences connect easier
@@gil-evens I hope he finds it. The dude is insanely talented
Checking this dude right now bc of this comment
@@leandrobauch1187 come back and tell me your thoughts after
corey might be more busy than you think. don't trust the algorithm.
The Paradox of trying to learn Keyboard....
Man, listening to this makes me wanna' practice harder and give up at the same time 😀😰. Simply awesome!
Feelin' your pain brother
this comment is totally right
@C B Erm, yeah.... but this is a keyboard video... With that said your point is valid 👌
Hahahaha I completely understand! :D
for real.
This was and still is one of the best namm performances I ever heard. Since I listened to this back in 2016 i knew Corey and Nick had a special connection, something fluent that you can see on Corey's face. He's so expressive and you can know when he is pleased playing with someone or uncomfortable
The musical conversation in this one is crazy
this is 10000% perfect
I love seeing the pure joy and love of music exuding from Corey when he's feeling it! Both musicians here are geniuses.
Just absolutely LOVE watching people excel at their "chosen" skill/art/craft. It just stirs the soul.
You've achieved the impossible: it's Monday morning - but you've made me smile from ear to ear. Utterly beautiful.
I've seen this video lots of times, but, aside for the great musical back and forth between Nick and Cory, what always gets me, is the pure joy on the faces of those watching in the background.
What makes this so fantastic is their innate understandings of where their instruments fit into the space of the music. I was literally telling myself that the only thing missing in this piece was piano downbeats with organ upbeats, and then 3:05 happened.
What a privilege it would have been to have been there live and witnessed this firsthand. This is one of the all time great on the spot improvisational duets.
They are BOTH so good, it’s hard to tell which one is supposed to be the
genius. 😃
Yellow beanie
The one who looks like he is just playing around.
@@Jay-eb7ik I’ll have to take your word on it.
The only answer is; yes.
Both of them. Very obviously 😂
I appreciate how you added the 3rd staff for the organ pedals, a lot of transcribers forget to do that on Hammonds. It also doesn't help that you can get the same tone in one of the manuals (for the left hand) if you set up your drawbars right, oh well 😅 that's why we have a video to help us out!! 🤣
I didn't understand a single word of this comment.
@@nicoelgreeko basically, the organ has a set of pedals below that you can use to play some bass notes with your feet. they're saying transcribers often just bunch that lower bass pedal staff and bass player with hand in one staff. They're also saying you can make the pedal make sounds like the part of the organ you play with your hand
@@alphie2056 the hero we don’t deserve
a lot of transcribers forget to do that on Hammonds. YES, and makes reading works by superhuman players like Keith Emerson a bit less clear on first glance
i concur. 110% correct man
You've done a lot of amazing transcriptions, but this may be the amazing-est. I'm in awe.
Thank you 🙏🏾 this also took the greatest amount of work and time I’ve ever put in.
@TimothyGondola I'm a retired US Air Force Band bassist. This was fantastic lift, great job Tim!!
The expression on the organist's face is priceless.Joy in the present moment.
I don't care who's playing what instrument it's always good to see two musicians making sure that each other can be heard but still fighting for the last note. That really brought a smile to my face.
They are not fighting over a last note. They are looking for that almost perfect call and response mode where notes never clash.
In game theory, you would call that a positive sum cooperative game with adversarial elements.
You can tell Nick has never been to church when at the end, Corey tries to do trades in the cadenza (a typical gospel thing) and points at Nick and he just finishes the tune 😂
He seemed to know the transitions to the song. Maybe he just isn't familiar with those church groups that do it? I'm being EXTREMELY charitable here.
I agree 💯. That’s a big problem these days w/ lots of the new players on the scene that didn’t come out of the church but, want to use the Gospel sauce. They learn the licks & basic Gospel progressions but, don’t know what to do in these situations where the slightest things change up. Cory has been in the church since the womb, can play Gospel in any key without hesitation & knows ALL of the hymns & spirituals. He’s a modern day Billy Preston. Nick is no doubt very talented. But, he’s very lucky that Cory didn’t force this to the key of B, A, Gb, E, A, or Db…
@@SimpsonSound some people might be able to read a hymnal, but that don't mean they can play "the old 100's" or "negro spirituals".
You don't even have to gatekeep. Either you know, or you don't.
@@Lildoc911 Who said anything about gatekeeping or reading hymnals?
@@SimpsonSound Gatekeeping is quite literally what the OP described. These songs are transcribed in hymnals, but they are played in different ways depending on the locations you consume the media.
I am familiar with "Southern Baptists (south east Texas) renditions of these songs.
So, before you come in here talking out the side of your neck about who, and what; try to understand the original poster, my comment, and what you THOUGHT you understood.
When I said, "You don't even have to gatekeep..."
It was a confirmation of the original comment. Not an accusation. I hope this made it clear for you.
The people smiles in the background-each so different in appearance but alike in spirit. Beautiful.
When Cory hit those left hand bass groove.. Oh man I’m floored .. awesome, it’s like he can continue all day and never run out of riffs. 🤩
To hold your own in a duet with Cory means you’ve unlocked genius level
Love it when musicians "communicating" without speaking
First of all I love how you guys literally took this to Church oh my goodness!! This is the very definition of “be so good that they cannot ignore you.” This is phenomenal!
It's a church song...
The fun in watching one musician grimace at another musician's flourish, while playing while playing along.
They play soooo well together, but the extrovert/introvert contrast is so funny hahahahaha this was wonderful
I've seen this dozens of times, and always get a kick out of watching the bald guy with glasses in the background. You can tell he's heard a lot of musicians, and knows just how good they are.
Uhh, this is Corey. Of course he's AMAZING!
Arguably the best piano player alive today.
To anyone wondering what song they're playing it's, "I Don't Feel No Ways Tired" by Reverend Dr. James Cleveland
Made famous by Hillary Clinton 🙄😆
@@solideomusical Hillary using the quote of this song was such an embarrassment and so insincere
@@juleskainmusic "Ahhh don't feeeeyal no ways taaard."
"I don't believe he brought me this far to leave me" I believe
Oh at the start, I thought they were playing "I just can't give up now" by Mary Mary
The joy! That's what's infectious to me. People that don't play any instruments will never understand that feeling. That cloud nine moment of complete connection. As a musician, I've played gigs where the money was a distant 2nd to the joy I know will come along with the others I'll be playing with that show. There are some people I won't play with again for any price, and others I'll play with for coffee and a chance to feel like these two looked throughout the video. I'm in love with their joy.
2:50 organs went scratch mode. Loved the vibe on this!
I want to acknowledge another genius at play which is the transcriber. Awesome work.
I went into this wondering which one was the genius. I don't think it took me more than 20 seconds to realize they both were.
I'm still befuddled by it....
The caption is a little off but then again, guess it goes both ways like you inferred.
Lol exactly
Henry we already knew was a genius. the other guys was the surprise
Exactly right!!!!
True
Intense synchronisation like a play and a melody on a moment's free flowing creation of complimentary rhythm. What a beauty in and of time!!
It’s great to see how they enjoy what they are doing so much and they have a certain language
As someone who never had the privilege of learning instruments growing up, I still find it fascinating to watch people with amazing musical talent. Mind boggling to me how people can play it so cleanly.
Seen these guys playing live twice. They are so good together and Cory's bands are always so tight and groovey. Hope to see them again soon
There's nothing better than syncing with another great musician.
The title of this video should be....when you realize that both you and your partner are musical geniuses! That was just great!
this is why i LOVE music. it creates beautiful moments like this!
So thankful you transcribed this. Pure gold.
I see things like this and it just makes me smile knowing there are people in this world that ..."CAN DO THAT!" and then to make it even better - they are in a total joy/love/groove with each other doing it. Made my night listening.
3:32 Finally something I can play
😂😂😂
😂
My God just the skill is amazing They complimented each other like Buttah! Extreme Talent on display . Just WOW!
cory wanted to trade at the end, but, that was absolutely fantastic
can i ask what a trade cadence is? i've been trying to find it out for ages lol
@@ellabelzie well its not really a cadence per say but i guess you could think of it like that. its, from my understanding, and way to end a song by trading solos to wrap the song up.
@@tristonrobinson5829 ahh cool ty
@@ellabelzie probably a I I7 IV iv or #ivo7 I the important thing is the bass.
When Cory Henry looks at you like that, you know you beat the game.
Black and white coming together like the keys on the piano ….Beautiful!
Ebony and Ivory 🎶
People coming together ❤
That big from about 3 minutes till the end was absolute fire! The timing, off beat… oooosshhh
Two fantastic talents with soul. The groove got me and also it was like watching Marvin Gaye on the keyboard. Marvin would approve of this jam.
The gentleman standing at the back @the 2:20 mark, his smile says it all. Spectacular.
They were having SO MUCH freaking fun omg
they be speaking their own language at this point such geniuses
So heartwarming how the right player's dad joined to watch at 2:07
Believe it or not, this was on Charlie Brown's 21st birthday. Linus took him and Snoopy to a Jazz Club, they snapped their fingers, sipped whiskey, and randomly yelled "Yeah!" at the cool parts. Linus' set slayed too.
dude your channel is pure treasure!!!
I feel blessed that I found your channel which was about 3 years ago
"I don't feel no ways tired". Love this song.
This song got me through many a situation over my last 50+ years. Phenomenal!
Fantastic stuff! Cory's facial expressions are always priceless
The way they are talking without talking is amazing !!
when I realize Timothy Gondola is an absolute transcribe master!
Music is magic. These two are simply having the best time.
This was so good and joyful now as a guitarist, I actually want to learn these instruments, lol
Oh wow. First time seeing/hearing this, and the sense of joy and playfulness, as well as the almighty skill and sense of music is as uplifting as anything I've seen in a long time. Watching the faces of onlookers is heartwarming, too. Can't read music well, but huge props to transcriber.
You guys just keep practicing, and you’ll get there eventually. Don’t be discouraged, some people are slow learners.
Thank uuu. Needed dat.
Hilarious. Needed the laugh!
😂
Ebony and ivory live together in perfect harmony
What an amazing set. Thank you for sharing this brilliant heart filling moment
Man I watched this several times and it always lifts me up. Magic, pure magic. The colab and respect two musicians have when they share a love for their mutual passion for music. A conversation in Praise, in Gospel, in Glory to God for allowing two talented people to share their God giving gifts to the world. Amen, Amen I say to you!
Two genius playing together!!
Not only were they having a jam session, but they were speaking to each other the ENTIRE time! 🎹🎶💯🔥
Everybody thinks Cory is the genius, but Nick slays this in SO many different ways!
My goodness that guys slays it equally súch a brilliant duet
They are great together. What talent. Nick’s skills are phenomenal! ❤
1:35 Fantastic moment of human connection.
Imagine being a person that does not like music. This was just beautiful to watch come together.
This is 1 of my favorites!!!!! Two souls that speak to each other!
Listened to this so many times and as a primary guitarist (now piano player too) trying to transcribe more than a few lines made my head hurt, you are appreciated
i love when 2 people with 2 completely different size hats come together.
Nord's keyboards sound so amazing.
The smiles on their faces… epic!
1:07 Whoops Cory probably not expecting the gm7 here lol
Also, staff is wrong, this is in C major (or A minor whatever)
They were feeling that.
The person listening to this, is also a Genius. Because YOU appreciate good Music.
Virtuoso playing like this leaves me breathless, with a huge smile on my face. What talent and what tremendous joy musicians of this talent and ability bring to the world. I am so very jealous that I have barely any musical ability. I can strum a few chords but the piano/keyboard has always alluded me. Fantastic jam!! Thank you so very much for posting. Best regards from the Giant’s Causeway coast of Northern Ireland. 😄✌️☘️
The video title is misleading.
It should be called:
'When geniuses recognize each other".
Two busy bees on the same honey hive who know how to make the room hum and enchant people with the sweetness of great music. THX so mutch!
This just puts me in such a good mood
beauty, and poetry personified.
hats off to you gents!
2:40 I was like AHA!! A MISTAKE! I knew Corey was a human...Oh wait nope.
Love to musicians having fun while playing music!
they are both remote controlled through a wooly cap. the yellow cap seems to be the happier model
Watching something like this brings me true happiness at the end of a hard day. Thank you
You can tell they're both good because they use the black keys too!
Dude on the left playing some very vocal type lines....love it!
I Don’t Feel No Ways Tired by Rev James Cleveland
Always loved this video! Great transcription Timothy
Music is NOT an athletic competition. Cheers to the soulful flavor Cory whipped up. It was a talented way to counter the show off.
might be one of the only times where im paying more attention to the other guy than cory henry
Yup, I enjoyed that! Thank you.
The pianist studies Jeff Lorber. Very reminiscent of Jeff's approach. And of course Cory is a reproduction of the great Billy Preston. Good stuff!
I picked “Can’t give up now” solo in there. What is even my talent? What???
you are a genius: great transcription
„Leave piano“ „return to piano“ hilarious😁well done
I like the Ccory chord
