I wasn't mad when I first heard it. I was somewhat mad that he did like half that solo without even looking at the damn keys. What really upset me was the fact that the drummer had NEVER played the song before, and only learned it on a flight TO THE STUDIO they played at.
These are my favorite reaction videos......No screaming into the monitor....just appreciating the music. The gentleman reacting, is grooving with the musicians....I totally dig that.
This is jazz/fusion, so you have a bit of funk in there, some pop sensibilities, some eastern vibes all on a bed of j a z z, Michael league (the bassist) is a phenomenal composer, as for the improv feel, a lot of the song is carefully put together, but with some “pockets” for improvisation, they played the set a couple of times and landed on this one as the best take, the whole album is a great listen
It’s just jazz. Fusion is just a marketing name they came up with to make people think it wasn’t just jazz musicians doing what they had always done - taking pop music, and making it into something musicians enjoy playing and improving over.
This was actually a live recording for an album. Musicians play better when there’s an audience, so they brought in an audience for the album recording.
I was high when a friend studying jazz introduced me to Snarky Puppy with this song. So absolutely get what you mean. You can imagine, it completely blew my mind without even giving me the time to realize it until it was already over. If you're looking for more songs, I can highly recommend "Shofukan" (extensive trumpet solo), "What About Me" (insanely high energy incl. a great guitar solo), "Bad Kids To The Back" (full-on funky af), and my favorite, "Chonks", which even has two guitar soli and mind-blowing brass & horn harmonies.
I'm someone who has seen this before (many times) and although you can never hear it "for the first time" again that really doesn't diminish the pleasure I get from listening to these guys, over and over. Every single one of them is an exceptional musician in their own right. Put them together and the sense of JOY they bring is beyond compare. Their skill in their musicianship with the ease of delivery and the depths they go within themselves to produce those fantastic solos is an absolute anomaly to me. The respect they have for each other. The ability to play just enough to fit in and yet when required to step up and Star. Just mind blowing. Written, (structured) yes. Improvised, yes. Jamming (feeding off each other) yes. It's all there. This is an exceptional group of people led by an exceptional composer and band leader Michael League (the bass player) doing an exceptional thing that brings pleasure and joy to countless thousands of people across the globe. Sounds like you have joined the club. Checkout pretty much anything else they've done and enjoy. Maybe start with "Thing of Gold" to see one of the other keyboard players (Sean Martin) doing his thing. Loved your reaction dude. Love your soul.
speaking of intelligence, I have literally watched every snarky puppy lingus reaction on UA-cam and yours is the most insightful and intelligent I've come across. Love your appreciation of the music and instrumentation dude.
I wanted it to be until he couldn’t figure out they were playing improvised solos. I do appreciate when he talked about the strange experience of being sad we’ll never get to experience this for the first time again
For me, I believe its one of the worst in terms of his lack of musical and recording knowledge. I do love his reaction, and insights. Its real, and I'm glad he knows that this is one of the best things he's heard and mad about it. But he is way off at times and its a bit embarrassing.
I’m mad I’m hearing this for the first time 7 years after it came out. Aaahhhhhhh this is sooo amazing. The savory sweet energy that keyboard/drums duet started out with and explosive energy it ended with is blowing my mind.
Nothing like the first time, but still there are chills every time…and always something new! This is what jazz is about, like tears, confusion, joy, beauty, brilliance.
Fortunately for you, Snarky Puppy has many videos that will all inspire this same reaction. I’ve got two immediate suggestions: First, they did a song with Lalah Hathaway that I believe won a Grammy, and is one of the most insane vocal performances you’ll ever hear. And then second, they did a song with Jacob Collier, who you reacted to a couple days ago, and it is appropriately strange and mesmerizing.
Also, not to brag, but way back before these guys blew up, a friend of mine paid out of pocket to have these guys come play at our tiny local venue. I don’t think there were quite as many people playing regularly with the group at the time, but it was still a ton for our little spot, and it was an amazing show. The horn players ran their instruments through guitar pedals into amps, which was really cool. I think some of them might still be doing that in this video, actually... it kinda sounds like that trumpet solo was going through a wah pedal. Anyways, great band, glad you found them. Enjoy.

I think you just described the exact reason why reaction channels are so popular. I’ve heard the song Lingus and I also love it. Watching you react is a way for me to re-live hearing it for the first time. I get the same dopamine kick I got when I first heard it, even if it’s not as big of a kick as the original. @@slowfinger2 Thanks man! I was talking to myself as well. I really only put those thoughts together after he kept saying how sad he was that he won't get that experience back. I get you man. That's why I like reaction videos to it. I can live the experience again, vicariously through you. Hope fully you have watched this whole performance. Snarky Puppy, Larnell and Cory are amazing. They are all amazing. It's them all being together with these people and being recorded for the first time that is creating this experience. I felt the same way as you did when I first watched. This is an example of a must watch AND listen. There is a palpable joy in this room. It's everywhere. This is obviously an Audio Technica sponsored event. That's cool to me from an engineering perspective. Studio is in Sweden. These are pretty much all Swedish folks. Nate Worth and Larnell Lewis are my favorite percussion/ drum duo. Larnell is amazing. Always keep in mind what you are hearing is not possible by one person. Nate is in there all the time - killing it! Larnell is my favorite modern drummer. The story behind him playing here is epic. I think he was the difference in this particular instance. I don't think he has ever played live, or at all with them before or since. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Such an amazing place to be.
That keyboard solo toward the end was something very special. The drummer is a bloody animal. The look of joy on all those faces is as great as the playing is. This is a real classic.
The album “Sylva” that they did with the Metropol Orchest is a masterpiece. The entire album is just one continuous story that blows my mind every time I listen to it. They also filmed the recording.
Probably the best contemporary album I have heard in a freakin' long time. We like it here and Family diner vol. 1 are great but Sylva is a modern classic. So much going on , so beatifully arranged. There's even a touch of good ol' DC GoGo in and on it. Must listen!
Like most jazz that's performed live, this song has a written structure that the players all rehearse and learn. Within that structure are measures given to improvised solos. That's what makes jazz so wonderful to experience live: it's never the same song twice.
It happend to me only a few times in life; about half-time of Cory Henry’s solo I got elevated by pure joy and freedom, a sparkling energy brought tears to my eyes.
That was a once-in-a-generation performance and a perfect storm of events to bring together the right people at the right time. Geniuses at the top of their game clicking to push each other even higher. I'm on a kick today finding other people watching this for the first time so I can get another vicarious hit.

I just discovered you today good sir, and there aren't many things I enjoy more than seeing people discover snarky puppy for the first time. I still remember my day, and it was indeed this song that did it. Welcome to the fold my dude. Subbed.
This is the best music I've ever heard. Audio only; it's utterly amazing, but with the video - literally the best thing ever. It NEVER fails to amaze - I've listened a thousand times and it still amazes - it just doesn't seem to get old!
Just so you know.....I had the exact same reaction the first time I heard this and I've been a producer/engineer for 30 years. Luckily the next 50 times I watched this vid I had the EXACT same reaction. And yes it was improvised...there are other vids of other takes of the keyboard solo....this was just "the one"! Truly a musical milestone in my opinion never to be repeated. Welcome to the family! Peace.
So glad you got around to my request. Snarky Puppy is a bit of a super band. Everyone in that room is pretty much a genius at their craft/instruments. Lots of Grammys in that room. @6:58 notice how superior and transcending and pure music and art is where a duel is actually a dance, the competition isn't to defeat or win, it's to coax out greatness from eachother. That guy (Shaun Martin) has won 5 Grammys, incredible musician in his own right, and he was still in awe.
Cory Henry performed a miracle that day.
I wasn't mad when I first heard it. I was somewhat mad that he did like half that solo without even looking at the damn keys. What really upset me was the fact that the drummer had NEVER played the song before, and only learned it on a flight TO THE STUDIO they played at.
Mate the amazing part of Cory’s playing surely isn’t he’s not looking at the keys...
Well once you meet and watch a couple of studios in the studio, that magic tends to fall away because, they're just that good.
@@DanLoFat I've not clue what you're talking about at all.
These are my favorite reaction videos......No screaming into the monitor....just appreciating the music. The gentleman reacting, is grooving with the musicians....I totally dig that.
Cory Henry is an absolute legend.
I'm so glad you've heard this absolute gem!
Stepanov: -- Michael League and Corey Henry in ONE: ua-cam.com/video/qq2tu-vAOns/v-deo.html
These guys are so good they must have their own instruments at home.
Michael league is a genius!
An absolute genius, i love these solo versions and even with the sheet music its basicly impossible to play like this
@@ashwin.unlead Check out his version of Continuum by Jaco Pastorius
@@jansenalexi1213 plus who would have believed the gospel keyboard player was a sleeping beast, he killed sleeper!
Great that you recognize the awesome guitar solo of "What About Me?"
@@vicentedillon4885 and the drum solo thats wonderful in it
Watching YOUR reaction to this is giving me the same chills as when I first saw this video. So in a sense, I do get to relive it through others.
“Their solos feel improvised” mannnnnn you are in for it!
Man... everytime I see this feels the same. I swear. This is the craziest thing I've heard in my life and I love this!
Oh, OH, we've made it here. Lowkey been waiting on this.
Extremely well said!
When you realize that music can be like this, it opens your mind, and you are sad that you have been missing it and may have never heard it.
speaking of intelligence, I have literally watched every snarky puppy lingus reaction on UA-cam and yours is the most insightful and intelligent I've come across. Love your appreciation of the music and instrumentation dude.
+1
I wanted it to be until he couldn’t figure out they were playing improvised solos. I do appreciate when he talked about the strange experience of being sad we’ll never get to experience this for the first time again
You should Open Studio’s one, then.
@@lerigoureux6474 what do you mean by that?
For me, I believe its one of the worst in terms of his lack of musical and recording knowledge. I do love his reaction, and insights. Its real, and I'm glad he knows that this is one of the best things he's heard and mad about it. But he is way off at times and its a bit embarrassing.
I’m mad I’m hearing this for the first time 7 years after it came out. Aaahhhhhhh this is sooo amazing. The savory sweet energy that keyboard/drums duet started out with and explosive energy it ended with is blowing my mind.
“Their solos feel improvised” is crazy😂😂😂
Enjoy.

Absolutely. I believe in that song the drummer stood up and just went? Love it 😍

Must listen!
YESSSSSSS!!!!
Him, "I hate listening to this, so im gonna rewind it a minute so i can do it again"
I think you just described the exact reason why reaction channels are so popular. I’ve heard the song Lingus and I also love it. Watching you react is a way for me to re-live hearing it for the first time. I get the same dopamine kick I got when I first heard it, even if it’s not as big of a kick as the original.
So thank you for giving me a taste of that feeling once again. Now go and watch some other people reacting to it for the first time and maybe you won’t be so sad ;)
dead on! I'm 3 months in on Snarky Puppy, and am now fully in on music reaction vids!
Justin. Your comment should be pinned at the top.👍 It's like you're talking about me!😃
@@slowfinger2 Thanks man! I was talking to myself as well. I really only put those thoughts together after he kept saying how sad he was that he won't get that experience back. Then I thought to myself that I'm getting a taste of that experience back while I watch him. Interesting psychological triggers we humans discover we have.
"We have keys coming in now?" You bet your sweet brass we do.
Robert is correct, Sylva with Metropol is stunning.
Probably the best contemporary album I have heard in a freakin' long time. We like it here and Family diner vol. 1 are great but Sylva is a modern classic. So much going on , so beatifully arranged. There's even a touch of good ol' DC GoGo in and on it.
Must listen!
SUCH A MASTERPIECE!!!
“What else should I hear from them?”
Everything
This has to be one of the greatest moments in the history of music 🤌❤️💯
I concur
Like most jazz that's performed live, this song has a written structure that the players all rehearse and learn. Within that structure are measures given to improvised solos. That's what makes jazz so wonderful to experience live: it's never the same song twice.
It happend to me only a few times in life; about half-time of Cory Henry’s solo I got elevated by pure joy and freedom, a sparkling energy brought tears to my eyes.
The thing that gets me about them is the *joy* they have in performing. My favorite is their performance with Lalah Hathaway.
That whole recording session is the actual We Like it Here album. ABSOLUTE masterpiece!
Great vid, don't worry, you'll always find something fresh when you listen another time. How about Snarky Puppy - Shofukan next?
That was a once-in-a-generation performance and a perfect storm of events to bring together the right people at the right time. Geniuses at the top of their game clicking to push each other even higher. I'm on a kick today finding other people watching this for the first time so I can get another vicarious hit.
People discovering them is my current source of dopamine
Beginning - "Are there no lyrics?" OK, I guess we'll listen... Middle - "I can't put my finger on it but I think I like it." End - "BRO, YOU DON'T NEED LYRICS!!!!" Looks like we have another Puppy convert! Mind Blown, LITERALLY!
I just discovered you today good sir, and there aren't many things I enjoy more than seeing people discover snarky puppy for the first time. I still remember my day, and it was indeed this song that did it. Welcome to the fold my dude. Subbed.
The whole time I'm just think wait 'til he hears the keys go off
This is the best music I've ever heard. Audio only; it's utterly amazing, but with the video - literally the best thing ever. It NEVER fails to amaze - I've listened a thousand times and it still amazes - it just doesn't seem to get old!
You can always do like we're all doing right now, and relive that "first time" vicariously through someone else by watching them react to it 🤣
Yeah
This is 100% correct lol, I was just about to comment the exact same thing
so true, lol
you got to see them live bro it will be just as good or better then hearing it for the first time
Just so you know.....I had the exact same reaction the first time I heard this and I've been a producer/engineer for 30 years. Luckily the next 50 times I watched this vid I had the EXACT same reaction. And yes it was improvised...there are other vids of other takes of the keyboard solo....this was just "the one"! Truly a musical milestone in my opinion never to be repeated. Welcome to the family! Peace.
funniest statement I have ever heard in my life "let me pull up the lyrics" that got me good.
So glad you got around to my request. Snarky Puppy is a bit of a super band. Everyone in that room is pretty much a genius at their craft/instruments. Lots of Grammys in that room. Corey Henry has one of the best keyboard solo's ever recorded. The entire arrangement and performance is just super tight.

Makes total sense bro, feel the same way with harry mack! Snarky Puppy is equally bonkers, as someone who plays drums, Larnell Lewis is totally godly. Now I have to live vicariously through UA-cam reactors! Having your mind blown / seeing someone else get their mind blown for the first time on something is always such a treat.

Can’t even count how many times I’ve watched them play this. Absolutely incredible!!! Larnell is a freaking beast from another planet. Word
Dirty Loops- Rolling in the deep!! YOU WILL LOVE THIS!!!
@6:58 notice how superior and transcending and pure music and art is where a duel is actually a dance, the competition isn't to defeat or win, it's to coax out greatness from eachother. Music teaches us how we should approach one another, not as competition, but as cousins pushing eachother toward greatness.
You need to listen to “Something” By Snarky Puppy next ft. Layla Hathaway. You will thank me later
Fuck no, he'll never listen to anything else anymore 😂
No he CANNOT listen to that. His head will instantly explode on camera!!!
When she does that voice thing he's gonna cut the video off. Lol
I watched it for the first time just minutes ago and then I watched your video. Love Snarky Puppy.
I had the pleasure of watching Cory Henry when he was 5 years old playing the Hammond organ in his church. My jaw still on the floor.
I appreciate YOUR appreciation! Mastery of both skill and presence in performance art and true appreciation of what the gifts are in such music, is far undervalued. People like you have the awareness to translate that significance to those who otherwise may miss understanding and/or noticing. Thank you.
The guy next him hyping out is Shawn Martin, an equally talented musician. My favorite song where he shines is Sleeper.
For real, he absolutely blew that song out of the water.
I felt the exact same way. I was blown away! I try to get a taste of that feeling I got when I first heard/watched this thru others like yourself and watching reactions to it!! Larnell Lewis is the greatest drummer ever! He learned that entire live session on the plain flight, insane!
I love how the stank face is slowly creeping in through the confusion.
The only way better yo will ever get to experience it is to hear them live in concert. I saw them in Ardmore, PA, about 2014-2015. It was a small venue, so we all were pretty close to the stage. Amazing jazz fusion!

Yes sir
This is exactly why I like reaction videos. I may not be able to hear this for the first time again, but I can see other people’s reaction when hearing it for the first time.
I've been a fan of Snarky Puppy for years everyone in this band is cold blooded!!!!
And the crazy part is every single member that's in this band, which is essentially a pickup band but does have quite regular members, in and of themselves are in their own tight ensembles as well different configurations. I mean is everyone from berkeley?
This is why we watch Lingus reaction videos - to recapture the joyous feeling of hearing this for the first time and seeing someone else experiencing that.
"Let me look up the lyrics" - I knew we were in for a good time from here.
