    Lyrics:
My daddy left home when I was three
And he didn't leave much to ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.
Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me Sue.
Well, he must o' thought that is quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk,
It seems I had to fight my whole life through.
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named Sue.

Depending on the reception from the crowd he'd either finish the song that way or say "i'm gonna name him... after you" and it completely changes the tone of the song.

I met Johnny in 75, never a more approachable man on this earth. Like so many of us, Johnny stumbled in his younger years but he never fell. Never a man with the solid values in life have I ever met. He fell in love with June Carter but she wouldn't have him intill he quit the drugs. He quit cold turkey, married June and the rest was history . If that doesn't show us all the power of love my friends, NOTHING WILL!!. God bless you Johnny , for giving us all something all the gold in the world can't buy, your music, your values , and for making us all better people just by you being on this earth. Rest in peace my friend, both you and June.

I was 13 when this song came out. It was played dozens of times a day on the pop radio stations.

He said at the end of the song "Those people cheering are inmates at a jail." This song is a classic & hilarious, but what I love most about it is that Mr. Cash & his crew went & preformed for people who were serving time in prison. That's an incredibly kind thing of them to do.

My parents would meet up for lunch with me at a pub and the first time I heard it on a jukebox I fell for that song and constantly pestered my parents for money to play it over and over. I claimed my imaginery friend Mick liked it. I still love it now. Later on in life I found out who Johnny Cash was. My pre school instinct was good. Johnny Cash was a thoughtful man who fought for people that society left behind he was simply something spectacular and even to this day, my love of plain black clothing I could probably put down to knowing, badasses wear black. I'm a grandma now and I may accidentally on purpose break out the Johnny Cash and explain that it's not just Goths that wear black.

Holst : The Planets Suite, and the best of Johnny Cash. I memorised the words to this aged like seven or something. Happy times man.

in this version, he skips over the second stanza:
Well, he must have thought it was quite a joke,
and it got lots of laughs from a lot of folks,
it seems I had to fight my whole life through.
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
and some guy would laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell you, life ain't easy for a boy named Sue.

Here's a little known bit of trivia about Johnny Cash. Back in March of 1953, Johnny Cash was in the US Air Force and serving in a post that involved monitoring radio broadcasts from the Soviet Union, which had long been ruled by the notorious Stalin. On March 5, Radio Moscow first broadcast the news that Stalin had died and the first American, perhaps the first Westerner, who heard the news was none other than Johnny Cash. Naturally, he passed the news along and soon the whole world knew that Stalin was gone.
