I think you’re right about Aliona realizing she’s been passed by. The tears were probably not about losing a worlds spot, but realizing she’s gone from number one to almost irrelevant in the blink of an eye. It’s depressing. So what do you predict she does next, and what do you think she SHOULD do next if she wants to make a real run at the Olympic team?
I don't think any other Russian coach would have taken her and risked the wrath and retaliation of Eteri. Also, I am inclined to give Plushenko a break about his attitude towards Sasha. He and she do have much in common, including quads, maverick attitude towards trying new things and challenging the limits, she even had the same name as his son. I don't think this means he ignores Kostornaia. We are all people and he gave Kostornaia what she wanted, including international choreographer, hot Sergey and private rink... he probably overestimated her ability to pace and train herself as well as Rozanov's ability to be her main or even only coach. But I think these are honest mistakes and as much hers as his. They will have to add some new coaches, make sure she is motivated, work a plan for her--each element she needs to master and start training now for next season. If Lisa can skate competitively and qualify for world's in her mid twenties, so can Aliona. She must give 100% and be motivated.
Rafael A has stated more than once that he wouldn't take Russian skaters due to the financial arrangements with Russian coaches and Federation. Also Russian skaters expect and depend on a group of coaches, who babysit them and this is not how Western coaches work. This is the gist of it, Rafael was much more diplomatic than me with his word choices🤣🤣🤣 No, after Evgenia's fiasco with Orser very few western coaches would agree on taking a Russian skater. There is reputational risk with that, and the wise ones will stay away. I remember Tarasova was all love and kisses with Orser until the wind changed... she is now all love and kisses with eteri😉 I remember when Evgenia announced returning to eteri, Orser had ro fend off Russian reporters asking about his take on it🤣🤣🤣
@nolaughingmatter Raf basically called her a “single use plastic cup” and I bet he’s feeling he was entirely right after these events. On the other hand Raf is always going on about opening his rink to other skaters to come with their coach and learn. Maybe they can go together with Rozanov, if she can’t go without him, for a summer camp or something. Plush can pay! Or, like the other poster suggested, Lambiel. He was in Plushenko’s shows. They are probably on good terms.
She needs her 3a back. Preferably, with the quads. Needs to get back her skating skills. Or hope that suddenly all the rest of the skaters would loose all their jumps...which is unlikely. She will not even make it to the national team - only 6 places in there and she is not making it good enough to be in there.

I remember at the beginning of 2019-2020 season I was hyped about mishina/galiamov and people shut me down saying i should pay more attention to boikova instead ... the girl (mishina) won everything with one partner at the juniors, the partner dumped her saying she is too fat and cant lift her, she found another one, skipped one full year came back and won everything again ... she is hack of a competitor
They have the most positive energy and chemistry and for me, it's really pleasant and a joy to watch. I am rooting for them! B/K are technically almost flawless but their vibe is off to me and they always seem so pressed. M/G are effortless passion
Yeah I like Mishina and I didn't know the back story with her previous partner. Glad that she found Galiamov and I think he is great too. I like his bend back sliding move that he used as transitions this season.
Well Zhenya Medvedeva is looking a bit silly now after saying that Kostornaia would have been a fairer addition to her Trophy team than Maya... I have so much respect for her showing up today with the free, after a pretty humiliating experience just a couple of weeks ago when she was effectively used as a scapegoat for the loss of Team of Firsts!
@MySassyGirl well yeah "AT the team competition". She's just getting started, u can't expect her to be an elite skater overnight, can u? she will get better
@@Tenorboy29307 same, I sent a video of Maya's quad sal to her with the message "maybe you could follow maya's example and actually show us your imaginary quad sal"
I think Sasha probably benefits from a calm environment, she always did best with Dudakov around and he's the calmest one. I would put Alina in the same boat: she was always clean in practices at competitions, then would bomb when the lights came on. With Anna and Alena, they definitely perform their best after some big disaster. Anna after she bombed JGPF, and after pneumonia struggles. Alena always does well after crying in practices and messing up a lot. With Alena, she's more emotional and reacts outwardly, and with Anna it's less emotional. But I think both thrive under pressure, which is a good thing.
Definitely. I think Kostornaia needs more structure and a stricter environment. I guess that’s why she’s back with Eteri! I also work really well under pressure so I totally understand that mindset.
OMG! This segment brought a huge smile to my face! Totally agree....the House of Plushenko is in trouble. Eteri knows it. I thought she was looking slightly smug this week. Thank you for this segment, and thank you for all the great videos you have been posting! Happy belated birthday!!
Oh Kostornaia Kostornaia. We kinda saw this coming didn't we? And I don't agree with you often Dave, but you are completely right...we saw the signs already at Europeans last year. And yes, I am pretty sure Shcherbakova (and probably Trusova too!) would have edged her out at Worlds. Kostornaia is difficult to coach, some people even say she's a cry baby, but for sure now her coaching situation is not ideal. Think what you will of the Eteri team, but they handled her brilliantly (and they were masterful in disguising her weaknesses too). Now we get Step sequences level 2. I'm pretty sure they are clueless in how to handle her at the Plushcenko camp. Besides the Kostornaia/Tuktamysheva drama, and the FAB quads from Maiia, I again really enjoyed Maria Talalaikina's fantastic Maleficent program. Can someone please give this girl a Challenger next season?!? This program is too good to not go global...
YAAAS! I say it all over the season, Maria has no ultra-jumps but her Maleficent is my favorite free program of the year. Her artistry is on another level. It's so pitying that she doesn't have as much reputation as her teammate Liza Nugumanova, she could definitely get more points in Component Score, and her GOE were also poor
@@katerinabrave2980 Yes, the magnificent Maleficent! :-) I feel so sad for Maria. Too many girls in Russia, too little spots for them internationally. And Maria does have the tech too - I mean, how many ladies skaters can backload a 3Lz+3T combo, or a 3Lz+Eu+3S combo? Not many outside of Russia...
Part of me is now secretly rooting for Maiia to upstage them all and suddenly start landing her quads consistently in competition. We all dismissed her and that’s her revenge 😂
one more thing to add. Yes, Kostornaia is a mess right now. But just to remind everyone, her international personal best total of 247 with "only" 3x3As still beats Maya's russian total best with two clean quads or Valieva's 3 quad attempts + super clean 3A. Just trying to point out that you can still be competitive even with a high GOE 3As and all the other elements. Now that is a big IF for Alena for the next season obviously.
Yeah I think you can't write off her "it" factor, either. When she's at her best, she has that star quality that only Daria could eventually challenge imo.
Agree that she still can be very competitive but we cannot compare a clean skate vs unclean skate. Especially Kamila is still in her "rehearsal mission" last night so with the base value, Kamila will still score higher. Maiia can repeat one more quad so theres a chance of scoring 170+ in FS. And next season Kamila Maiia Dasha will be in seniors so most likely the PCS will help too. Last night they 3 performed very well with improvements in emotions and interpretation. Imho, it really shows that theyre working so hard to be "fully senior" next season and will try to prevent bad comments towards 1st-season-seniors who are often criticized as "emotionless". Id say having quads will be more secure for kostornaia
@@sfs6501 I think it's fair to compare a clean skate vs an unclean skate if an unclean skate is normal or expected, like it was of Trusova last season, and would be of Khromykh at this point (and arguably Trusova as well.) One of Kostornaia's best weapons last season was her consistency. Valieva is a different story from the other quadsters; she's rough when adding a new element but once she gets used to it it's game over for everyone else. I expect she'll be consistent next year. It will be an exciting olympic season!
Liza is amazing because she keeps squeezing between “old” Eteri’s girls and “new” Eteri’s girls. Basically, this is the only way anyone can compete in Russia - you have to find a time when old girls are falling apart and new girls are still in juniors. Maybe Zhenya/Alina can do the same. It seems that lifespan of Etri’s champion is getting shorter. Zhenya fell apart in her 4th season, Alina in her 3rd and these 3 barely made it 2 years. Also, 3A had more personality. Kamila, Dasha and Maya all have very similar style.
Zhenya fell apart coached in Canada under Brian O. Alina won everything she could and it’s up to her to decide if she wants to continue competing or try herself in new areas like shows, etc. Eteri leads the girls to develop the best of their potential as long as the skater is interested. I do like Liza’s dedication to skating- to be fair - she never won the titles she wanted to and that’s probably why she keeps going. There is so much more the skaters could do inRussia after retirement from competitive career - that’s a tough pick sometimes
@@lanakapiniak7105 "eteri leads the girls to develop the best of their potential as long as the skater is interested" perfectly said! Actually I agree with your entire statement
Medvedeva was in bad shape when she got to Orser. In fact, Medvedeva has said that she had to end her professional career if she had stayed with Eteri. Orser is a great coach, but not a magician. I don't think he knew what he was signingup for when he took Medvedeva. You can be pretty sure he won't take any other Russian skater, unless perhaps she is competing for another country. Tursynbaeva on the other hand came in great shape to Eteri only to be sent to the bench with incurable back injury within a season... as to Alina, we saw her at the Grand Prix last season... she was falling apart. Even as a show performer this year at 18 years old, she looks heavy and out of shape. I am glad she retired through. She was lucky Eteri had the 3As so she let her go... otherwise she may have ended like Tursynbaeva or Medvedeva. I am glad she remained relatively healthy. I am sad to see Anna was not that lucky this year and was pushed and pushed... I think we can safely assume she will not finish next season.
@@lanakapiniak7105 No Medvedeva fell apart and that's why she moved to Orser, to learn technique that works for a grown woman. And unlike Kostornaya, Trusova, Sherbakova and Valieva, Tuktamysheva has won all of - GPF, European Championships and Worlds.
@@benbailey159bb 'And unlike Kostornaya, Trusova, Sherbakova and Valieva, Tuktamysheva has won all of - GPF, European Championships and Worlds.' This is not a fair statement. Firstly, Valieva is still a junior so she hasn't competed in GPF, Euros, and Worlds yet, so your comment makes no sense. Secondly, Kostornaya, Trusova, and Sherbakova just became seniors last season. And in fact, Kostornaia won GPF and EUROS. She was the favorite to win Worlds but it was canceled. The fact that 2020 Worlds did not take place was an injustice for the 3A because surely one of them would have won, and if Kosto had won, then she would have achieved what Tuktamysheva has - winning the three championships. If 2015 Worlds had been hypothetically canceled due to pandemic, then Tuktamysheva wouldn't have a World title. This is the case with Kostornaya, Trusova, and Sherbakova. Therefore, your statement is unfair and erroneous.
I don't think Aliona's done - I'm happy that she gets to end her season early, get to heal, and start working for next year. What she has shown here after being injured and sick is actually pretty good - she just needs to gain her confidence back. I also hope that this is a wake up call to Plush, that Rozanov can't do it alone.
Her chances for worlds and olympics seem unlikely now. Since she missed the worlds this year, it'd be very hard for her to beat eteri's students for a spot on the team in the future. She's out of shape and still recovering from injuries and Covid.
I don't know if Plush's ego will allow him to do that. He is invested in promoting his academy and putting the blame on everybody and everything except on himself.
@EE DR Remember, the ice is slippery. It's only 2021 - it's impossible to assume who's going to make the Olympic team when Beijing is a year away. And hey, I feel like it will be pushed back maybe 6 months to a year.
1:22:45 about why Morozov can't work with Kostornaya. Another Russian drama - Sasha's dad was really angry with Plushenko accepting Kostornaya because it was the main point of the transfer - to be in a spotlight for the whole training (and the only one who gets profit from new coach's lifehacks). So Plushenko promised him that these two would be separated and would get different coaches
@@TheSkatingLesson What do you think about Kostornaia returning to Eteri? Even if Kostornaia was unhappy at Sambo 70 before, she seems much less happy at Plushenko's. I think Eteri might welcome the challenge of fixing her.
@@graceliu2549 Doesn’t she have anything better to do than fixing arrogant young lady with the crown above her head, who left with scandal and was happy with new training methods etc... Eteri has the whole team of top skaters , they all need time and her attention... Do you think now suddenly she will become happy with everything in this skating school... so it will make no good for anyone... she should look for third trainer now
@@annabondaruk4583 Yes, I agree with everything you said. However, maybe this past year took away some of Alena's arrogance. She crawled back to Eteri begging for forgiveness. Let's see if Eteri takes her back. Alena needs Eteri. Eteri definitely does not need Alena. I hope that Pluschenko learned that he can't let bratty teenagers have their own way and dictate the terms. No one wins when a "coach" allows teenagers to run the show.
I think not sending Young You to Worlds is a big mistake. No, she's not at her best this year. But she is 3 time National champion, 4CC medalist, and very likely still going to be Korea's number one girl going into the Olympics. But now she'll have zero World championships behind her when she gets there. She stayed on her feet for the SP triple axel, and finished only a few tenths of a point behind Haein Lee. Haein has never been to a senior competition in her life, her first one out should not be Worlds. She has no reputation, the judges will not do anything for her. I really really enjoyed her skating last year, but I did not enjoy her at all at this competition. All I could see was a glaring lack of extension and finished movements.
Actually, You Young is a 4-time National champion. As much as I like her, I actually thought that KSU chose the right skaters for Worlds. Young hasn't been competing as much this season, and her results at NHK and Nationals were poor, thanks to the rinks in South Korea being shut down and not very much (if at all!) on-ice training. I think she needs time to recuperate, like Kostornaia and many other skaters this season, and once vaccinated (hopefully) with borders around the world lifted, she'll be able to get back to her proper training regimen. Even if Young were sent to Worlds, I doubt she'd be able to make the podium (most likely reserved for Trusova/Scherbakova/Kihira). I say let's let her resume training this summer so she can regain her 3A consistency and practice her quads (4Lo? 4Lz?) so she can have them before the Olympics.
They could have send Young You and Haein, I know she just came from Juniors, but she has been consistent and also was qualify in the Junior Grand Prix. I like Yelim, but no offence, she lacks some peps, facial expressions and all that, I mean the program doesn't capture my attention.
Now we see that leaving Eteri was the worst decision in Alyona’s career. Did she panic or did her parents panic? Seeing Sasha doing quads, hearing Plushenko promising multiple quads and a triple, and she couldn’t get her triple back after the pandemic. Rozanov leaving, she being lured and offered bright future. She should have trusted her coach. I’m sure Eteri would have got that triple axel back, she just didn’t want to rush things. The record of Eteri’s girls beating everyone in major competitions regaining top shape after some rough starts speaks volumes. At the same time, good for Sasha and her parents saying it’s me or I’m leaving. And Alyona is stuck with Rozanov. Honestly, she should have been behind Frolova in both the short and the free by some points. Will Rozanov get the same money as he was promised now that Alyona fell through and Zhilin sisters are coached by their mom? He was a top junior coach, known and respected, now he’s painful to watch.
she wasn't lured away, Rozanov advised her to stay with Eteri and she insisted on following him, is what I've gathered from articles although I would not be able to find them now so don't quote me there. Plushenko was happy to jump on the opportunity but wasn't poaching her. Agree that it was a bad decision. Eteri could have coached AK to olympic podium and I do not have the same faith with the plushenko/Kostornaia combo. Different story with Plush/Trusova. that seems like a good match imo
Who knows if Eteri would have coached her to Olympics... I say Aliona was on the chopping block anyway. With Kamila and Anna clearly ahead of her and 2 more ambitious new comers entering the picture, plus Sasha/Plushenko putting 100% into that Olympics spot... Aliona was in a very hard place even if she had her 3A. However, she has also lost her 3A during the Covid break in the spring and has not recovered it by August, although she trained with eteri. I think that staying with eteri would have given very similar results to what we see now... possibly slightly better, may be her step sequences and combos would have been better but still not enough to get her to Olympics. Even the world's would have been tough, she may have had a breakdown with all quads been jumped around her and the pressure to regain the 3A. I remember Zagitova at Grand Prix just before withdrawing and can't help but see parallels.
Btw Evgenia Medvedeva was present at the stands and in teamtutberidze mask again 😜 but this time they didn’t show her, we have only photos from photographers, but she was there)
@Once Upon Seems like they favored her again not showing her on screen after Maya's performance. I was so happy for Maya after all she went through at the team competition show (and I was not even a Maya fan before but I guess I am now). So proud she held it all together after that difficult period. Her SP performance was just amazing (artistically speaking).
Hi Dave, Mathematician here checking in for duty. The birthday thing you talked about is actually a famous mathematical problem called the birthday paradox. You can use probability theory to prove that in a room with 23 people, there is a 50% chance at least two of them share a birthday. In addition, if you up that number to 70, there is a 99.9% chance that two people in that group will share a birthday (even though there are technically 365 different possible birthdays). I am happy to show the math at some point if interested :-)
Fans were screaming 'Aliona, we love you anyway' after her short program. Also, some group of people screamed 'Eteri, you are cool', haha after Kamila's program. Russians are not that bad at supporting someone as you think :D
Btw there was a funny moment during Alyonas interview, she actually mentioned and quoted Eteri even though she said “one of my coaches” instead of her name but that Eteris quote is really famous so everyone understood. She said: one of my coaches said «the road will be mastered by the walking person”. ☺️
Maybe a hint she will return to Eteri .. hmm pretty sure Russian Fed would like that at least... perhaps her only chance to get back to the top. She left in a really bad note though, Danii could never go back to training her like nothing happened.
Ha-ha... Aliona will never choose to go back to Eteri. And certainly doing that will only get her to where Medvedeva and Zagitova are now. At least these two have won multiple international competitions, while Aliona will not even have that to help her land TV engagements or sport populalizing events. The only way she would be back with Eteri is if Rusfed uses hard pressure / carrot&stick approach... however Plushenko is Russian so they have to thread more carefully than they did when Medvedeva left Orser.
Man, I'm so worried about Aliona! I think she has the potential to climb her way back up but this showing really brought home to me the extent to which she's still a young teenager who's so vulnerable. I'm now very unsure that she even has a place in domestic Russian competition - which is such a shame because none of the other Russian girls grab me in the way her performance does.
I hope she continues on! I also think people are underestimating her health issues.. her stamina seems horrible atm that she didn't even get to do the complete step sequence for the FS. She performed them in the practice and only 20% of the choreography was delivered in the actual comp.. I can't believe they made her change her programs again
Just cos they were a great athele doesn't always make them a great coach. Many athletes would never have achieved as much success as they have without shrewd coaches making sensible, rational decisions and talking them down!!
I freaking love Liza, she’s such a sassy queen. And definitely has a maturity in her performance ability that the you girls don’t yet. I think it will be really sad when she retires and we are left with only young teenagers. Also love Kostornaia, and sad things didn’t work out, although I think this result was pretty predictable. Also a big fan of Kamila, but she’s really got to fix those combos, they’re scary.
I really hope they give her more sassy free for the next season, I'm not really buying her interpretation of it, however it's incredible to see her still going and doing programs with 3 triple Axels at that age!
I think Liza will try to get closer to Olympics and she may want to end her skating career on a high note so she can retire to good endorsements or some job in the media perhaps she wants to coach too but I don’t peg her as a coach. I am really happy for her, she’s worked so hard throughout the years.
Valieva already has some really memorable programs. Not all Olympic gold medalists have it. But... my fingers are crossed for your daughter Anna! Love Anna!
I question Kostornaia's team's judgement in replacing the short program. In isolation, I can understand the impulse if you're looking to engage in hardcore pandering to the judges with classical music, but given that Kostornaia is already struggling to get back into shape _and_ getting a new free skate (and I more understand the desire to replace that, since the response to it was more sharply negative), why would you add yet another thing onto her plate? The program they chose looked pretty generic, as well; there's nothing about it that stands out as much as the Eilish step sequence did at Rostelecom.
Their math is what needed to fixed in the old program. They didn’t care what her music was. She just needed to get all of the elements in place and solid. It is a MESS! All of it....why they did all of this to this girl, I will never understand.
While I am happy with vivaldi as her short, the decision to change her SP surprised me. It's unnecessary if you want to do well in the Russian cup but will be good for next olympic season. Both programs are still empty in my opinion and the new FP still feels the same to me, nothing special while I think her SP has a potential. Nevertheless, Plush & team will need to inject a lot of details and personalities in both programs.
One of the reasons she claims she left Estero is because she wasn’t allowed to skate to the music of her choice, which was Eilish.... so, she skated to it at Plush ‘s camp, and now she is back to classic “ four seasons”. Plush can care less for Aljona. With Sasha, he is so scared of her father, that he would bend any direction just to please him( Sasha ‘ s father got really mad when Aljona joined Plush’s camp), we all know what happened next- Aljona was simply not needed there. All efforts go to Sasha . If Sasha doesn’t do well, her father is going to make Plush pay for it( and I don’t mean money).
@@bunnechka4ever Not quite. Daniil choreographed a long program for her to Billie Eilish right before she left. It was the short she had an issue with, whatever it was supposed to be. I heard that the music she wanted to skate to was Edith Piaf - Eteri told her she wasn't mature enough for it, though she had given it to a younger student the year before.
Korean judges have no mercy with the tech calls, lol. Junhwan mentioned in an interview that there were a lack of training facilities and quality ice. Training in Korea is kind of awful, lack of competitions this season aside. Yuna having the full package before Orser was way more about her exceptional talent than coaching talent in Korea, not to mention quads and men's skating is a different story- rather uncharted territory in Korea.
I can see why some skaters here did not do well. With the rising infections, ice-rinks in South Korea were shut down for a long time. How any of them were able to get on-ice training is beyond me (unless they had connections to someone else with money and access to a private rink). At this point, I don't know if Korea will have two spots for Olympics or Worlds next year. Ye-Lim was good here, yes, but she has never beaten reached You Young's scores internationally, and unless she is training the 3A, will never be able to reach Rika Kihira. Best for her to get 5th or 6th at Worlds.
Spinel she cannot even get 5th with the Russians, Rika, and Kaori. Kaori with a bad skate at 4CC last year still nearly beat Yelim and Kaori looks 100% stronger this year. And Bradie and Satoko will probably beat her too if the tech panel isn’t too harsh on the URs so I think best case for Yelim is to be 8th. Yelim is a pretty skater but she doesn’t have the X-factor at all so the judges don’t really help her out
I could be way off, but the sense I got from Aliona's SP warm up was that she was so used to private ice time at home and forgot how to jump around other girls, so was just kind of circling the rink feeling intimidated and like she didn't have all the space she wanted.
I think Trusova is fine with Plushenko for now through the Olympics. I think he’s more of a mentor than a coach to her, but with only a year I am not sure anyone else can give do much else for her & she seems much happier. If she wants to skate beyond next season, she’s going to need someone who knows how to manage athletes.
Trusova is self motivating, she can train herself. She doesnt need a bad ''cop'' to push her. Also, she is not dainty and lyrical like the other Eteri girls, and I think that this pressure to look like them in order to show artistry bothered her. Even in dance rehearsals published on yt she was always compared to the others, and was seriously lacking. In Plushenko's camp, she doesnt have all this pressure- she can focus on jumping + fix her artistry at her own pace, without being demotivated. So I really think that this was the best choice for her. Kostornaia on the other hand, made a huge mistake, and Plushenko should have never accepted her. it is a terrible deal for both of them.
Her jumps have definitely been improving. They still lack consistency. She needs to do a clean long at Worlds. If she does, anything is possible. However, her components really suffer from two years of programs with falls.
If she leaves plushenko, she'd get even more bad pr. He built a house for her and got her sponsors/brands. But at this point, it's either stick with Rozanov til the end or find another Russian coach. I don't think she has the resources to go outside of Russia.
@@triplea_qgb1963 there’s no Russian coach except Mishin to help in this situation . As for the resources to go aboard, they might be found but it is a pandemic world . It makes everything more complicated.
@@junglesuperstar9270 mishin won't take her when he has elizaveta (unless she retires after worlds). Plus he's also busy coaching kolyada for the olympics too. But what coach would take on a new student during the Olympic season? It might be too late.
Valieva got +4 on her 3A, 9s components with 2 falls and no connection to music... plus have you noticed there is a sizable delay between jumps on her combos..
What do you think about Sinitsyna not being allowed to compete (was injured 1st half of the season) when Diana Davis was in the same situation but was allowed. To me they were scared they would have to send her to world. She did a small competition a few weeks ago and did a quad (and we know she has good artistry).
Hello a Read all de comments this little Girls are so sweet they only want to compete for be winners literally every event is a Kiss and Cry for me the drama always is the spicy every event The most important thing for me is that the coaches take care of their students not to overtrain them so that they do not get injured besos desde Panamá 😘🇵🇦

@@pgk3052 It was confirmed that Alyona had left Plushenko's team. Still not clear, if Eteri will take her back or not. The decision will be made tomorrow by Eteri, coach team and Sambo-70 management. (Match TV Channel news)
@@bertrandduguesclin7750 I think the official announcement comes tomorrow. Big news outlets all reported it including TASS, which means the news are true.
I think that Plushenko did a lot of courting of Sasha and her dad to convince them to come... he also has some great selling points with her, as he himself had jumped quads, being through traumas and won Olympics. Aliona came to him in August, obviously after things at Eteri's have soured.... she has not recovered her jumps and especially the 3A, and Eteri & Co were starting to be mean... consequently she called Rozanov and asked him to help her move. I think Plushenko is invested in her, but perhaps overestimated Rozanov as a coach and Aliona as a skater who knows what she needs. The only way I can explain the 2 new programs logically, is that the coaches saw she cannot recovered sufficiently for the world's and placed 2 new programs based on feedback from Rusfed (gotta keep these guys happy) and decided that next season is the one. I think it makes sense for her to take this year off (with Covid and all, it is a good year to be off ice, if there is such a thing) and also to see that there is a lot of competition and she must go for it with 110% of her efforts and motivation. I hope they add a couple of other trainers and also prepare a plan for each of her deficiencies... I agree that Plushenko should tap Mishin for that... Mishin should work on his legacy not just for his athletes but make sure his coaching methods are passed on. And he basically raised Plushy, so it seems like a logical thing to do. Aliona has the skating skills to follow in Lisa's footsteps and stay in the game until her mid 20ies ... and she should. But the jumps and the other elements have to be restored... and she has to show that like Lisa and Evgenia, she is a fighter.
@@jacquelineblance4861 based on all previous generations of Eteri’s athletes . The pattern is always the same. The moment the growth spurt starts , the girl is kicked out.
@@junglesuperstar9270 It's bullshit. They didn't kick Yulia, They didn't kick Eugenia, they didn't kick Alina, they didn't kick Elizabeth etc. And we have Daniil words on apparent change of Alena's mood, sabotaging training sessions etc. This girls just turned diva, but coaches refused to play that game as Eteri had the same experience with Yulia, and decided that she'd never again do the same mistake.
@ Pavel Selivanov: they did not kick them, just told them to retire when these skaters started having problems due to injuries or puberty🤣🤣🤣 Eteri does not care because she has several replacements in the waiting. Next, please!🤮
Sorry, I don’t mean to upset anyone. That’s just me trying to give constructive input. Deeply appreciate you both and always look forward to Sunday TSL.
Alena achieved huge success with Tutberidze. She tried Plushenko and lost her position. It is logic that the best and possibly the only way out is to continue working with Tutberidze.
@@irenem3306 how would she come back to the place she criticized so much... If she had left with dignity - everyone would agree with you... She didn’t like Gleyh’s programs, she didn’t like younger kids at the rink, she didn’t like music, training methods... But nothing has changes there, except one thing- more girls become much stronger.. I don’t see any reason for the team wanting her back...
@@annabondaruk4583 she's officially back though. Eteri dictates the conditions and Alena has to land the 3A by the end of this season. Otherwise she is out. However if Alena will do well it will be Eteri's interest to keep her and prepare her well for the Olympics. Anything can happen to her other skaters, Shcherbakova Valieva etc and Alena has big international reputation. Better to have more skaters running in the race just in case.
Didn’t you guys get the same vibe after Alena’s short as with Gracie’s experience with Vincent (I can’t remember his last name) ... like there is no one accountable there and It makes you sad how you see the train is leaving for her :( Miracle scenario would be for Mishin taking her but it doesn’t seem possible.
Actually, there's nothing new with the arms overhead thing. It's coming from ballet and much more aesthetic as opposed to arms squeezed to the body and shoulders up to the ears
Valieva does it for all her jumps this season. Apparently some said that rippon can help with straightening the core which maybe helping Valieva to land her jumps. Before adding rippon to her 4T, her airtime was ...scary to say the least.
Plushenko is a fake coach. And this was demonstrated this season. He is like that rich kid from cheap TV shows who messes up main character's life. "I will buy the best here and there". It's so gratifying to see life give him the beating... Pity for naive skaters which became the victims of PR and marketing...
There are probably conditions Eteri placed and gave them 1 day to think about. If they accept, Aliona will be transferred. Whether it will be disclosed as such is another matter.
Medvedeva. Kostornaia. Probably other examples. Is it really the fault of the coach that they move to (Orser, Plush), or the fact that at this stage in the game, these skaters’ bodies have begun to break down.. coupled with the change in training atmosphere, various injuries/illnesses, is it really fair to blame the new coaches so soon? Alina barely held on to her last good competition season while still only 17-18, even while staying with Eteri.
Yes, I agree. Also changing training a d routine can get things worse before they get better. But I agree that these girls all seem damaged by the time they leave eteri. I also think they leave her as a last resort to avoid ending their competitive career.
They both left with immense injuries. It isn't just the coach. If you talk to anyone in Canada, Medevdeva had arrived with a terrible back injury that still bothers her to this day. She had lost her ability to do her triples during the summer of 2018. Kostornaia is also injured. They are leaving as damaged goods. You can't judge the new coach for everything if Eteri took their best years of health and fitness.
Although he has a big impact on her training, I do believe it's time we stop throwing various excuses and blame everything but the skater. It's ok to admit she messed up her short and panicked afterwards...i mean it's fine? Could happen to anybody
@@chocolateperfume752 I'm not talking about the mistakes in the short. Don't tell me changing both her programs again was solely Kostornaia's decision. Or that after Plush said they'd bring the most expensive choreographers it was Alena's decision to make choreo with Shae-Lynn. Covid and illnesses or not, she is mismanaged all season and this is never the skater's fault only. Plush clearly favors Trusova and it shows. It also seems his own career as a coach and promoting himself and his kid is more important to him than some of his skaters. Go and watch the short video the Olympic Channel posted yesterday. 🤷♀️
@@TheSkatingLesson it's Rozanov's faul too but he at least doesn't go out and say his goal is to become the greatest coach. Plush is the head of that academy.
@@susmus5034 I don't defend plushenko or put the blame solely on kostornaia by any means, but I'm just saying it's a normal thing to happen. U remember when sasha had that awful skate a couple of months ago, when she fell 4 times? Well the same assumptions were circulating back then just like now with alena. Some said she was injured, others that plushenko wasn't giving her much attention (same thing now with alena), she needs to go back to eteri...etc. but I totally agree with u on plushenko loving to promote himself, I think it's been pretty clear to everyone by now
Re healthy athletes and the effect of COVID there is efficacy to suggest that many cardio fit athletes (distance runners, triathletes etc) are getting more severe cases and are being left with dreadful long term lung and heart affects. Being extremely fit can make it worse.
to be honest, the whole Kostornaia situation is not doing me good. I have been thinking why am I down in the past days only to realize it's the whole what if she never comes back with all that beauty she was presenting to us in the past years...am I crazy? I have created this strong connection to her skating and what i think figure skating should really be about. But for now it really does seem she lost it. It's all together, her speed, technique, choreos. Like I know Eteri is probably psychologically abusive towards her skaters and it only makes sense for you to leave when someone treats you like that, but on the other hand, they deliver. Honestly, I am torn. Can Alena come back next season? Is she gonna try Mishin to show her a recipe for 3A after 20 just like Liza managed to keep it? Someone help
i feel the same way..... her skating skills have declined so much, she doesn't even stand out from the other girls in that category anymore (which is alarming due to the general poor skating skills in russian skating)
But why do you all seem to be so surprised over Aliona?! Show me just one skater who has been exposed to Eteri and lasted over 18th or 19th birthday? Lipnitskaya, Medvedeva, Zagitova (and some less known names) are all gone. Now it’s time for Aliona and pretty soon for Scherbakova too. In fact, it must be very convenient for Eteri that Kostornaia left her so everyone can blame Plushenko. I am not blind, I can see his ego is oversized, as Eteri’s by the way. Only hope Sasha can last, she might be the toughest one out of those girls.
@@dominiquedominique6462 i am slightly surprised because Kostornaia wasnt raised by Eteri hence her technique is a bit different than other girls´ of Eteri. But yes, it does make sense, whole Russian female skating is based on new crop replacing the old. I only hope in some kind of Tuktamysheva scenario for Alena, that she doesnt give up. Or Carolina Kostner, for the skating skills they kinda share for me
I agree with Jonathon at 13:00. Daria Pavliuchenko is a really good skater and she is a lot of fun to watch. She is young but I hope she continues to improve. I would really like to see more of her in the future. Also the Tron program from a few years ago was entertaining and unique. I'd rather watch that type of program than one of the many slow boring ones that in between jumps and throws nearly put you to sleep.
If she land 3A or 4S, she will throw Aliona and also Trusova. My favorite three are Kamila, Anna and Daria, but we will see what happen with Trusova, Maya and Alena.
Unpopular opinion but she's like Rika Kihira: she doesn't do it for me. It's probably those programs they have them skate to (in Kihira's case, it's also the costumes and hair).
@@Ian.D. I don't like her programs either but I think she has better performance quality than Kihira. But Kihira never did it for me. She has her moments I guess.
Alyona has some contracts that have to get terminated before they can accept her. Plushenko refuses to pay for her expenses (programs, dresses and so on). So, she needs to resolve her debts first.
obv this is speculation but after watching the kiss and cry it seems likely to me that Kostornaia has a crush on Hot Sergei and that's what led her to make an emotional decision to change coaches that everyone, including the coach in question, advised her against. The atmosphere between Kostornaia and Plushenko is nonexistent to the point of being awkward to watch, and what seems to me to be too much personal attachment to Rozonov. Leaving Smabo was the right choice for Trusova, wrong choice made for wrong reasons for Kostornaia. We'll see if they can get back on track next year but idk. /2c

I think last season was her season. It’s a shame that a skater as special as her might not get that world title, olympic medal, etc. But we already knew that with the insanity of depth in Russian women somebody is always gonna get left behind.
I thought the new music and dresses were nice. The old Kostornaia could have made them work. But music and costumes mean nothing if it’s the same generic skating. Seems like it was a waste of time where she needed to be working on levels and transitions and consistency.
OMG, does somebody in this fandom knows how to count? Kolyada not only will lose to Vincent/Shoma even if they fall one time, but also his base value doesn’t allow him to do any mistakes.
@@lyragill3395 he messed up at Nationals and still gathered huge technical score. The thing is, for Kolyada bronze not only he needs to be perfect but many has to fall. This CAN happen, but for now I think he will be either 4-5-6th.
Almost every Nationals has joke scoring... URs not called, lack of edge calls, etc. And Vincent has poor components, which are not marked accurately at a U.S. Nationals...
Why is it whenever someone skates to music associated with an iconic performance of a certain skater, it's judged as "trash"? Kami and caro are obviously nowhere on the same level, as skaters and of course their age and maturity. U can't make a fair review of someone's skate if u constantly keep comparing it to another's
XD No need to be mean! Kami is trying her best. To me, she seems more the classical type, as her balletic training indicates, and she looks good performing to music like "The Storm". The one thing I enjoy about her FP is her costume. She looks very well prepared as an incoming senior for the Olympic season.
@I M She is the skater. The program is the choreographer. Two very different things. You can be extremely talented and be given a program that is beneath your level of ability. If you take off your fan glasses, it is a very logical situation.
Gentlemen, I do appreciate you really try to pronounce Russian names right. You pronounce Tamara perfectly right. Just if you wonder Moskvina is MoskvinA actually. The video is interesting as always.
Sadly you might be right about chaos at Plushenko’s school. And look just you predicted Alena made the move. Figure skating needs consistency! Otherwise no matter how talented people are , it will not work. Too bad Alena lost too much time. Now for Sasha it’s different since she has self discipline. Wish all the best too all girls in Russia. Next season will be brutal
I agree with David, it doesn't matter at this point. Getting 3 spots was a big task anyway, so any skater will do as long as Kolyada doesn't have a complete meltdown.
@@tranquilitytranquility1407 I can't pretend I'm happy about it. I would've sent Aliev. For all his shortcomings, he did win the free here, he's the reigning European champion and he's got an important body of work (i.e higher PCS). I think he could've secured 3 spots for Russia along with Kolyada. Let's hope it pays off.
There are live streams on UA-cam. Russia's Channel One streamed lot of competitions this season. International competitions also have free streams most of the time.
Thank you, Dave and Jonathan, you are doing a lot to promote figure skating in North America and beyond! Could you please invite Averbukh or Navka shows to US or Canada with their New Years program. I believe it will give a huge boost to skating here!!! Please! I promise to attend (if it on the east coast) 😉
@@TheSkatingLesson Maybe involving local Olympic champions would help, but shouldn't Olympians names (no matter the country) be attractive? I would say the performance/story itself would be an attraction - it creates the Christmas spirit and brings you into the Fairy-tale mood....but maybe I am wrong and missing something in understanding the local NA culture....
Oh please Tarasova always disliked Aliona. You know why?) because Aliona is her long time rival’s pupil: Elena Tchaikovskaya. Aliona also praised Tchaikovskaya as the first great female skaters coach. At Russian nationals last year she said: “I don’t think kostornaia is better than scherbakova in terms of components”. That was insane. Now Eteri has finally let Tarasova at her rink and the old harpy has to pay for that by trashing Eteri’s enemies. I am sure she will start trashing Trusova soon.
What?! Tarasova was always saying that Aliona is the most balanced figure skater among ladies, especially during GrandPrix Final. She just reeeally doesn't like tears on the ice rink she was always harsh about it
26:15 Have you translated the word correctly tho? "Angina" and "ангина" mean absolutely different things - the former is a cardio-vascular thing, and the latter should be translated as "flu". Plushenko was talking about "ангина", not "angina".
I hope this isn't the game plan for Kamila for next season, if so she could end up like Trusova last season attempting all the difficult elements and being too ambitious leading to falls and quality issues with the programmes.
I wouldn't read too far into the future based on this performance. Valieva seems to have a history of botching new elements on the first outing and pulling it together on the next. I wouldn't mind if she focused on the 3A and 4S and ditched the 4T though tbh. The 4S we saw in practice was chef's kiss and the 4T makes me cringe but that's just me I guess.
Kamila is not very stable emotionally. She did fine with new FP layout in practice, but at competition she tend to fail new elements at first, but perfect it as time goes on. I think that's the main reason Eteri wants Bolero to stay for the next season, so by December Kamila gonna be very comfortable and close to perfection with this program.
I like Maya’s SP, not that much her LP. But she’s improved by leaps and bounds this season. Those quads were stellar. Her arms, face expression... I mean everything. And quads do have an impact on the audience and the judges. The whole arena becomes magnetic. If she gets the triple axel, if Daria gets a quad and the triple axel, Kostornaya, Trusova and Scherbakova who were thought to sweep the podium at the Olympics might not make it at all. It’s not only them, Kihira, Korean girls. Too young for the past Olympics, too old for the new ones. Wow 🤩
I hope you received some flowers on our Bday Dave- you deserve it!! Happy belated. And yes, people from same birth signs can get along very well due to commonalities.
I think a Kostornaia SP level RusNats 2019 performance here would have knocked Tuktamysheva out/beaten Usacheva. But the lack of quads will make it insurmountable for her to go beyond a clean Valieva/Khromykh
There seemed to be a frantic vibe from her in the triple-triple combination this time compared to the SP when she got bronze when she completed this season.
I was thrilled for Khromykh today but let's not get ahead of ourselves thinking she'll be nailing that every time. three clean 3As and the performance power of Kostornaia would still edge out a perfectly clean two quad Khromykh, same as she could beat Trusova last year. But whether we'll get that from Kostornaia at AoP I'm skeptical today...
how about Kostornaia going to Sergei Davydov, I really like his skater Anna Frolova. He also seems to have a lot of young upcoming skaters who seem to have good skating skills, I guess they could have gotten these from their previous coaches. But maybe an upcoming coach with discipline but less ego could help her.

I think she has to get healthy, find a great off ice trainer and beg another coach to take her on.

Hopefully it gives her confidence.
Didn’t age well
one more thing to add.
Unless daria gets 3A or 4S then it's basically over for Aliona.

I agree. I really think this needs to be a wake up call to Plushenko and push him to manage her better and be more present

So Plushenko promised him that these two would be separated and would get different coaches

HUGE mistake!
I'm so sad they're not sending Young You. I agree that's a mistake.

@@NormaLilia24 Reading from that quote, I thought it has similar meaning to "slow and steady wins the race" thing?

Her Picasso short was much better, IMO.
I needed this today.
Just to clarify, Alena didn't have angina. Angina is a strep throat translated from Russian.
Thank you
I question Kostornaia's team's judgement in replacing the short program.
I question their judgment about everything!
They are so tough with calls!
She does train with other skaters on the ice if I remember correctly.
@@ileana823100 it's not the same as having other girls doing quads around her

Yes, I adore you two!!
What is the option for Kostornaya? Switch coaches again or continue with with plushenko and pray for the best?
If she leaves plushenko, she'd get even more bad pr. He built a house for her and got her sponsors/brands. But at this point, it's either stick with Rozanov til the end or find another Russian coach. I don't think she has the resources to go outside of Russia.

I was waiting for this episode!!🙂🙂
First!
I’m so happy that Alyona returned back to Eteri!
I hope she will not take her back... Alena should try to find another couch, it would be the best for everyone
@@susmus5034 Ues, yesterday I posted translation of that interview here, under this video
Didn’t you guys get the same vibe after Alena’s short as with Gracie’s experience with Vincent (I can’t remember his last name) ... like there is no one accountable there and It makes you sad how you see the train is leaving for her :(
Miracle scenario would be for Mishin taking her but it doesn’t seem possible.
Mishin's group choreo style doesn't fit Aliona. Plus, he has Anastasia Gulyakova now so the ladies package seems full
@@katerinabrave2980 but he can fix her jumps. Unfortunately he will not take her.
I don't think that Alyona will move to another city. Mishin lives and trains athletes in St. Petersburg
@@vivettanors not a big deal .
I wish there's negative goe for doing jumps with arms above head more than three times. It has been more distracting than impressive for too long.
Some really overdo it.
Yeah they need to stop doing “The Evgenia” too much. Yup, I literally just named it after her lol 😂
They don't even give the bonus any more, so there's no point
Actually, there's nothing new with the arms overhead thing. It's coming from ballet and much more aesthetic as opposed to arms squeezed to the body and shoulders up to the ears
Valieva does it for all her jumps this season. Apparently some said that rippon can help with straightening the core which maybe helping Valieva to land her jumps. Before adding rippon to her 4T, her airtime was ...scary to say the least.
Dave, we need all your fave gymnastics sites-as a casual gymnastics viewer, you’ve gotten me hooked on this current group of gymnasts
I may make some videos related to this! For now, The Balance Beam Situation is likely the best resource.
Plushenko is a fake coach. And this was demonstrated this season.
He is like that rich kid from cheap TV shows who messes up main character's life. "I will buy the best here and there". It's so gratifying to see life give him the beating...
Pity for naive skaters which became the victims of PR and marketing...
Aaand latest news. Alyona Kostornaya has left Plushenko, and returned to Eteri Tutberidze.
@@bertrandduguesclin7750
She didn't return. She asked to return. Up to Eteri.
@@dknt2923 Technically she never left Eteri - she moved to Plushenko out of the transfer window. But you are right, it's up to Eteri.
Plushenko is ruining the career of the most talented Russian skater 😡 He blames everything except himself 😬
Although he has a big impact on her training, I do believe it's time we stop throwing various excuses and blame everything but the skater. It's ok to admit she messed up her short and panicked afterwards...i mean it's fine? Could happen to anybody
He takes zero accountability. I do think they both could have done a much better effort.
Some said she was injured, others that plushenko wasn't giving her much attention (same thing now with alena), she needs to go back to eteri...etc. but I totally agree with u on plushenko loving to promote himself, I think it's been pretty clear to everyone by now
I was sooo looking foward to this!!! Oh Russia- the drama!
So much today!
Re healthy athletes and the effect of COVID there is efficacy to suggest that many cardio fit athletes (distance runners, triathletes etc) are getting more severe cases and are being left with dreadful long term lung and heart affects. Being extremely fit can make it worse.
It also makes you wonder about the training conditions and things athletes are doing...
Omg a Bob and Brad shoutout! They are great. I was wondering if they could help with Dave’s ankle 😆
They are!
to be honest, the whole Kostornaia situation is not doing me good.
It may not have been possible for her to physically keep training like that. Her number of injuries indicate it was bad for her body.
i feel the same way..... her skating skills have declined so much, she doesn't even stand out from the other girls in that category anymore (which is alarming due to the general poor skating skills in russian skating)
I feel the exact same it is so so sad!
Or Carolina Kostner, for the skating skills they kinda share for me
My moment of the week is Jonathan comparing the Angels of Plushenko to Fyre Festival 😂😂 incredibly apt comparison
Ha!!!!
Kamila is amazing my favourite skater ever
She is a huge talent.
The only synergy between Mishin and Plusheschenko is the falure of Kostornaya so Tuktamysheva can go to Worlds.
I really want Daria to make the Olympics she is definitely my favorite eteri girl
If Daria can do the triple axel, she will be the new the Alena.
She is great!

She is back
You guys be faster than the speed of light! ⚡️⚡️⚡️
There is news in Russia: Kistornaya wants to come back to Tutberidze, but will she accept her?
Yes!
Dear God, u talk as if u know everything that's going on in her head🙄🙄🙄

Seeing alena after some time and how her body developed reminded me of alina in 2019 worlds (she delivered nonetheless), that body change. However, I don't know if that's the main reason for her weak technical performance, or something else
She is going through growth spurt. It's still not an excuse why her team makes silly decisions like changing both her programs 🙄

I think last season was her season. It’s a shame that a skater as special as her might not get that world title, olympic medal, etc. But we already knew that with the insanity of depth in Russian women somebody is always gonna get left behind.
Any opinions on both program music choices for Kostornaia?
Very blah...
@@TheSkatingLesson what do you think she should skate to?
I thought the new music and dresses were nice. The old Kostornaia could have made them work. But music and costumes mean nothing if it’s the same generic skating. Seems like it was a waste of time where she needed to be working on levels and transitions and consistency.
I like the music, programs on the other hand were blah...no nuance no nothing
OMG, does somebody in this fandom knows how to count? Kolyada not only will lose to Vincent/Shoma even if they fall one time, but also his base value doesn’t allow him to do any mistakes.
Meh as if Vincent will not mess up
@@lyragill3395 he messed up at Nationals and still gathered huge technical score. The thing is, for Kolyada bronze not only he needs to be perfect but many has to fall. This CAN happen, but for now I think he will be either 4-5-6th.

Kostner's Bolero is Chanel while Valieva's Bolero is K-Mart
100%
Kostner is the most overrated and boring skater, no way her Bolero is Chanel lol😂
When you speak together at the same time, we can’t hear what you are saying((
It is not intentional. We are excited and have a lot to say.

Aliyev literally told his coach after the free program that he went for broke :) I think he will go to the World Championship with Kolyada
Comments like that indicate a lack of organized training.
@@TheSkatingLesson I agree with you at that point. I hope for him to sort it out before worlds.
I agree with David, it doesn't matter at this point. Getting 3 spots was a big task anyway, so any skater will do as long as Kolyada doesn't have a complete meltdown.
The are sending Semenenko instead! 🙀
I hate to say it again is ice-skating just not televised anymore?? I have no idea how to watch it

Who would the draw be? The skaters aren't big names here.
@@TheSkatingLesson Maybe involving local Olympic champions would help, but shouldn't Olympians names (no matter the country) be attractive? Oh please Tarasova always disliked Aliona. You know why?) because Aliona is her long time rival’s pupil: Elena Tchaikovskaya. Aliona also praised Tchaikovskaya as the first great female skaters coach. At Russian nationals last year she said: “I don’t think kostornaia is better than scherbakova in terms of components”. That was insane. Now Eteri has finally let Tarasova at her rink and the old harpy has to pay for that by trashing Eteri’s enemies. I am sure she will start trashing Trusova soon.

Can't wait!
Well, Kamila is a one of a kind and she is the best the figure skating ever had.
26:15 Have you translated the word correctly tho? "Angina" and "ангина" mean absolutely different things - the former is a cardio-vascular thing, and the latter should be translated as "flu". Plushenko was talking about "ангина", not "angina".
who are on Russian girl's team to the 2021 championship?
Anna, Sasha, Liza were conformed today.
@@praetorrus dang, i was hoping to never see that program again.
Wow 🤩

If she skated her best then yes.
Dave! Happy delayed b'day!! It showed you were excited today... I only got half of the words you said hahahaha, so fast!
Thank you!
how about Kostornaia going to Sergei Davydov, I really like his skater Anna Frolova. He also seems to have a lot of young upcoming skaters who seem to have good skating skills, I guess they could have gotten these from their previous coaches. But maybe an upcoming coach with discipline but less ego could help her.
He has only experience with junior skaters.
Happy belated birthday Dave:)
