Kostornaya has said several times that she really wants to do Edith Piaf but is saving it until she's old enough to deliver a mature preformance, so fully expect to see that next season. Think it will be a good fit.
I saw ladies LP live and I’m blown away by how different Kostornaya’s skating is comparing to rest. She FLOATS above the ice. Her speed and ice coverage and smoothness were 3 heads above the rest. It literally went in one breath. Even the dress looks okay from the stands. It adds to the overall lightness and you can’t see the fit issues from afar. 😂 Liza worked the crowd, but it was all a bit heavy and large part of her program was in small circles in the middle of the ice. Ultimately I’m happy for her. It’s not the end of the world for Kostornaya to lose this particular start, but it’s a big deal for Liza to win.
I agree. I think Kostornaia has the ability to turn a performance into magic. This was better than last week at 4th stage of Russian cup, so I am hopeful that we will see consistent improvement. She was my favorite skater last year, and I still np not see anyone who can replace her, although I loved Valieva's short.
I think Anna might have an advantage in that she knows how to get back from extended time off the ice. She broke her leg then her arm which took her off ice for a full year. She not only lost her 4T but also many of her triples. But she took her time to build it back up, and she's had a lot of experiences of bad skates that she can come back from, and from her interviews it sounds like she has a very level head and parents that keep her grounded and motivated.
I think the timing can change a lot. If she loses her quads while also growing, it will be harder and possibly impossible in the short run. Let's hope she is away from the ices for just a couple of weeks and nothing is really lost.
What really impressed me is the improvement of Liza 's spins and flexibility. That is really amazing. She said in an interview that she loves figure skating but it's not the only important thing in her life, so maybe that's why she still skates after so much time, she is not obsessed with constantly winning and staying at the top. I think that's one of the reasons female skaters in Russia retire so early: the battle to stay at the top is just too harsh, from many aspects.
I also think that her spins do look a little better this season. She has never been the most flexible of a skater, but this is not her fault - every human body has its own limitations and it would be foolish of her and her coaches to push things to an extend where things become rather unhealthy and dangerous.
Timestamps: In Great Detail! 0:00 Intro 8:00 Skating talk begins here including the commentary coverage of the recent ISU GP event in Russia Rumors of Sambo70 having COVID. Anna WD due to the flu or pneumonia and Evgenia Medvedeva has COVID and is in the hospital and she recently turned 21 (like Ashley Wagner-Dave mentioned this briefly) 9:59 Medvedeva: withdrawal from Rostelecom (Nugumanova was her replacement in the event). She now has COVID apparently. She is in the hospital if new information comes I will post down below. Eteri might have covid, who knows. 10:56 injuries (possibly referring to in general or perhaps at Sambo70). Alexandra Trusova: 3A
I missed Ana C. Cantu whom placed 24th at the 2009 Worlds becoming the FIRST female Mexican skater to qualify for the FS, She has a spin named after her. This was timestamp 17:52 if I am not mistaken, please correct me if I am incorrect. I wanted to put a side note that I wished that skaters went outside the box with music choices. not just the boring overused classical and pop music. There are many many MANY let me repeat composers with incredible music that have not been used from EVERY ERA (Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Post-Romantic, Impressionist (France), 20th Century, Atonal, 12-Tone, 21st Century, Digital, Pop, etc...I can go on forever since music is my major and what I will be getting a degree in for Music Performance in May 2021). Last season Rika Kihira part of her FS music was by Hildegard Von Bingen (the first FEMALE composer documented ever). I learned about her (Hildy as we nicknamed her in class) in class (Music History I). We can end this era of drab music choices. In all honesty EMPRESS LIZA and Kolyada stole the show this week, sorry to everyone else, you are all fine. Kostornaia, she is a star but...she needs the 3A back or else she will be 3rd or 4th at nationals (this includes if Anna and Alexandra and Elizaveta have incredible performances with quads and/or 3As). She has the inherent talent and the musicality. Trusova, biting at the heels of Alena, her artistry is improving a lot with Evgeni. Bad performance here at Rostelecom but she has soooo much talent! Anna, did not see her here, I hope that she recovers soon. She has not done the Quad Lutz yet really only the flip we have seen in the Russian Cups and also in the PDF of skaters program content only the 4F was noted. Lots of talent and the only of the Eteri 3 As to be with her. I wish her well! Evgenia, I am so sad to see her not compete again, as Dave mentioned she is becoming like American Skater Ashley Wagner (whom won the 2012 4CC and the silver medal at the 2016 Worlds). She probably would have been 3rd judging by the field. Sofia Samodurova, The SP is growing on me but the free is sooooo bad. The music is dreadful really. I saw some of that fire in the SP here. I think she is great but where she lies in standings for nationals, who knows.
I was surprisingly entertained by all the Russian skating this week. Kolyada was his inconsistent best - the free was beautiful even with the few errors. Aliona was beautiful even without the 3A. Liza is a perfect example of making the most of what you have to offer and perseverance. Boikova and Kozslovski were classic Moskvina perfection. I also enjoyed watching the lower-tier Russian female skaters. Quite a few of them had a lovely quality...Nugumanova is a enjoyable skater. All and all...a good competition to watch.
I was wondering how Trusova's coaching team let her go out and skate while injured, but then I remembered that Vyacheslav Trusov, her dad, was a boxer who almost punched out several coaches and her main coach is Evgeni Plushenko, who went to the Olympics after 5 surgeries and tried to keep skating at the elite level after 7 surgeries. Her other coach is Dmitrii Mikhailov, who less than two years ago, was an ice dancer having a girl stab her blade into his leg on a daily basis. The poor girl. My heart broke and I hope she will not be hurt too much, mentally and physically.
@S K He's that crazy pushy sports parent you've scene in every sports movie ever. He's the type to sneak into the dressing room before a competition to sabotage the oppositions skates.
@Skate Lover I think there was a statement from her team, something like that. Supposedly it happened yesterday, at the SP when she tried to do the 3A and fell. Idk if it's serious or not
Pretty sure she'd just leave for another coach like she left Eteri if they didn't let her do all the quads and the 3A even if she can't land it. I think it's apparent you can't blame Eteri for her jump obsession. I know a lot of fans believe Eteri forced her into those programs, but judging by her actions and words it's the opposite. Eteri tried to get her to stop so she left. Her parents also seem kind of weird to give her a dog every time she lands a new jump.
@@rop888 you know I think she should cut her hair too. Fresh start, but I don’t think she’d agree🤨. Being serious though I feel Plushenko is pushing her too hard. Overloading the program it seems. Don’t want her to crash and burn🇦🇺
@@GrippiAlex She'd lose some weight instantly if she cut her hair. Imagine how much lighter she'd feel! You'd think it would have to help her jumps, to not be top-heavy.
Agree completely with Jonathan....from Kostornaia's hair color to feeling Trusova's heartbreak over her free program and the ethereal Kolyada. Thank you, TSL for a great segment!
This was such an interesting competition. Tuktamysheva is over the age of 18 (over the hill in skating) and considered "geriatric". Trusova was a complete wreck . My heart went out to her.
over 18 is not "over the hill" in skating. Liza T. is finally understanding what it means to skate a program and relate to the music, IMO. Great competition for her. Alena Kostornaia is my favorite ... it was interesting that her score would have been as high or higher than Liza's if not for underrotations. Alena will get there; she had a very late start in training this year, with her injury.
@@GrippiAlex I think it's Trusova herself who insists to do so many quads; Plushenko helps her do what she wants to do. I think she'd do better if she attempted fewer quads, but she clearly wants to do them
I completely agree. The age limit needs to be raised to 18. It will be a game changer because it forces everyone, skaters and coaches, to think long run, which means technique, health, etc.
No. It will make it easy for elder skaters... But why should it become easier for them?? Sport is not about "make it easy". Sports is about competition! Faster, stronger, higher! There is no such item as "long careers", thnx god. Sport is NOT a job after all.
@@feyanormorfol2457 There was "long careers" before that recent explosion of Russian teen skating and it was much more enjoyable to watch when you can actually get invested in a skater and see them progress instead of burning out and retiring severely injured when they turn 18. I love the skating of Kamila, Anya, Sasha, Alina, Yulia etc. but it has become really painful to watch because no matter how promising someone looks, you just know they will be replaced in a season or two by the next junior star
@@kthy31 First of all, you forgot to add "to me" or "IMHO" after "was much more enjoyable". Because to me and other fans post-Sochi Caro was slow, boring and quite forgettable. Second, lack of competition gives rise to "long carees" and loss of quality at the same time. It's important to keep the bar high, like Tukt does, raising her BV with two 3A(and landing them!). It's absolutly correct when judges disregard previous victories and age of skaters. As Irina Viner says - "When you on the podium - you are the queen. But after you come down from it - you are nothing, and you should start over again."
@@feyanormorfol2457 Of course in my own comment I state my own opinion lol. Caro post Sochi is an extreme example, she was what, thirty? But for excellent skaters like Alina or Evgenia to not be competitive anymore once they get out of puberty is ridiculous and actually sad
Honestly I was so happy for Liza here. Her jumps were sharp (the 3A in the short was perfection), the triple lutz is a thing of beauty, and yknow what she has made considerable improvements on her steps and spins. Like who thought Liza would have better spins than Kostornaia, but here we are! She's never going to be the fastest/most flexible or graceful skater, but props to her for actively upping her game where she can at her "age". This win was totally satisfying to see - I hope we get that quad toe at RusNats!
If she is planning for 4T for Nationals, she should not drop the second 3A like last year. Sometimes I wonder about her layout. Doing ultra c element while still doing 3Lz-2A seq. Gone the point advantage she got, it's so not optimized.
@@yohanes2034 Yeah, it’s really frustrating seeing her do so many triple axels, and then lose competitive advantage by not maximizing the points on the other triples.
@@arthurtheaardvark13 they only improved in regard to how many revs she performed. Flexibility is still shit, and I agree with the above comment or on her jump composition and program layout! She has the best triple lutz in the biz- why not do a 3lz3T and 3A3T to maximize points or 3A2T 3lz3T 3Lz3T2T? Also she lacks speed and her step sequence is slow and labored. But Aliona left the door open since Liza put 3 3A into her competition over two programs so even with mistakes, Aliona’s snooze fest of a free skate without a 3A and level 2 step sequence blew her shot at gold! SLB did her dirty with that garbage free skate and skate dress! They should take the gala music and dress, which is gorgeous and flattering on her, and doctor it up into a free skate with level 4 steps her skating skills are worthy of and hand me down that Walmart discount generic free skate and Goodwill generic washed out. free skate dress to the queen of cheap and washed out skate costumes...Bradie Pollyanna hair Tennel!
Is anybody going to talk about Trusova’s sleeves? She legit stopped mid program (toward the end) and started fidgeting with her sleeves. I thought she was having a wardrobe malfunction, but I guess it was planned to release the spikes on her arms. So strange. It was like the dress changes the Eteri girls did last season but this was not incorporated into the choreography at all. Or maybe she was just so flustered from the falls that it didn’t play out well.
On Kostornaya's 3A (from her interview aired on Channel 1 before the Rostelecom Cup): "I do about 5 daily and thought I would try one in the FS at the 4th Cup of Russia stage but the coaches went like "and how many can you land cleanly in a row? two at best, so.. you're not there yet". After her SP at the Rostelecom she changed her narrative though, and insisted that clean programs were a priority rather than 'jumping out of one's pants'.
David and Jonathan, I find you two to be soooooo HILARIOUS!!! I couldn't stop laughing, I really do enjoy the hyperbole. And you two sure do have plenty of it. I think you know what I mean, especially you David, with the "Male skater of the year", comment. LOL big time. All I could say was...stop!..your killing me!...enough is enough already! It was Enjoyable though! Chow
I had the same reaction as Jonathan watching Trusova. I've never been a fan but this time I was subconsciously rooting for her and damn I had to stop watching because it hurt...
Personally, I feel that the judging at Rostelecom Cup was a complete mess, both in men and ladies... For example, look at Aliona's FS: the first 3Lz was < but it was called q, the 3Flip in the second combo wasn't underrotated at all but it was called
I miss the skating right know but I really want to see people safe. I thinks Anna has COVID-19. I am so sorry for Medvedeva. I hope she gets a speedy recovery
I think contracting Covid-19 is dangerous for an athlete. I heard many bad and scary things post Covid-19 recovery, it might not cost your life but some cases have showed that it could have long lasting damage to your body. This could be the end of a career for any active athletes. Hope Anna and Zhenya recover fully.
Jonathan- I am on the same emotional level as you regarding the Russian men this year. I have really been enjoying their outings at the various stages of the Russian cup.
Just some thoughts..... I still wonder how judges could give Trusova 8.60 in the skating skills??? - I mean, 6 Points of deduction for the falls, some carrots and q`s, level three on spins and the step sequence, overall sloppy and messy skating and that`s 8.60 in SS?????? - In comparison to that, Kolyada, who had an almost perfect skate with no falls, no carrots and some Level4 elements got 9.50 in SS- not even 1 Point more????? Sorry, I don`t get it.
I believe Mishin would be able to perfect Trusova's jumping technique and make her a more consistent skater. But, she also needs someone who will continue to push for improvement in SS, interpretation ... I don't know if Mishin's team can give her that push
If i see Kolyada right now, i would say yes... and btw, i think Trusova is not ready yet to have complicated program both in artistry and technicality. I think for now she should stick with her strong point on jumps.
Maybe Mischin was filming Sasha for a reason we don't know. He is the jump master. He could fix her jumps in time for the Olympics. But will he want to?
@@MMG1800 by asking Mishin he will just show what a weak coach he really is. He was trying to hide that Trusova is taking skating lessons in another place. When some journalist asked him, he was surprised but answered like yes she’s talking classes on skating from another coach in another school. Btw Eteri didn’t mind that too.
Mishin is devoted to Liza, he's been coaching her for over ten years, and I've read that before starting to work with Kostner he asked Liza if she minded that collaboration. Rumour has it, Trusova's parents talked to him about coaching Sasha, but he refused to do that. So no, I don't think he will coach her.
Tuktamysheva's free almost worked for me, it's that mature skating where there isn't a whole lot but you at least enjoy watching her having fun, and the jumps were very good. I hope she changes the costume for a proper kimono. I like the back of her current dress but it also looks similar to others she had before. Trusova with Mishin would be perfect, he's a fan of her, he was filming her quads at the last Cup of Russia event, tho i think she is Plushenko's baby (maybe more than Kostornaya) so they'll try to make it work.
Emm a proper kimono....... I guess you mean a dress with kimono alike style? Like Evgenia's one last year? In real proper kimono, you can barely walk and barely breath, it's design that way to make you "have proper posture" look "slow/ cautious/ conservative therefore elegant" The fabric is thick, heavy, and too long for skating.
@@benbailey159bb yep! And you can notice Boikova rolls her eyes pretty often when marks are not so high, according to their expectations, for instance in Kazan Cup this year.
1:06:27 exactly my thoughts. Morisi quad toeloop and salschow takeoff is literally indistinguishable real time. I was thinking wait, he did another solo quad sal after the toeloop? Was that supposed to be an error? His picking technique on the quad toeloop is different and with similar entrance with the sal, I think most people would not be able to tell.
Mine as well! I thought: "Wait....what? Is he doing the toeloop with an almost full-blade take off???-strange....." Now I know that my eyes weren`t kidding me! :-) :-) :-)
Jonathan! I was watching Z/G and the first thought that crossed my mind was exactly that they were the Russian Pipper and Paul! I was so happy you brought up that very same thought! ☺
Who are you talking about at 49:06? Edit - Khudaiberdieva? Did they do an Up program? Edit 2: found it, watched it. I actually thought it was well done, except for that movement but it does show the sadness of old age. It's heartbreaking. Ugh, that was a sad movie, too.
Boikova and Kozslovski was my moment of the week. That long was sheer perfection and made me actually feel something. IT had me in tears by the end, absolutely incredible
I love Elizaveta. I am so glad she won. I was happy and proud for her. I do like the long program. I think better than what she has done in past few years. I do think her 2 programs she won Worlds with were her best programs. Music and choreography. My opinion.
I loved her "Bolero" programm and "in the hall of the mountain king" as well. I also loved the "drummin`song" programm and her Britney-Spears- Ex - really hot and funny! :-)
1:37:00 re retolin. Yes Jonathan. My son is prescribed it for ADHD, and he can focus, sit in class without disruption and do exams. It's great for the right people.
To Jonathan's question regarding cancelling Skate Canada International but holding these virtual Sectionals events, holding the former virtually wasn't an option due to it being an ISU event, according to what some people in the know have said.
I am so glad to hear that Jonathan also felt sad for Trusova. It was a tough watch and I felt sad to see her here after her win at the last Cup of Russia. Do you think that Kostornaia has a chance to win nationals or beat Tuktamysheva with the current free program if she gets the 2 3As back?
If she gets the 3A back my bets are on her and Kamila battling for Gold. Anya depending on how she recovers from her illness might complete the podium. Sasha will depend on the quads and Zhenya is just a big question mark rn so maybe Liza will medal again, who knows?
Galliamov is the new diva in fs. Not in a bad way. Probably the most likeable men in pairs right now. I love B/K too. I hope both teams get a medal in the Olympics.
This has happened to Trusova before, Kostornaia is a performer she nails it when she needs to, Trusova flunks out in any competition where the pressure is on her. She can't cope with pressure look back at where she has done well - always a non pressure situation. She cannot ever be a champion because no matter how good she is she cannot perform on the day.
I hate to agree here but it's true. She landed that 3A so many times in training and warmup it is mind-boggling that she can't deliver it in competition. Same for most of the quads. I think she wouldn't try jumping them if they weren't ready at all but somehow her nerves get to her? Can't even remember the last time she skated clean in a competition
It all started with the 4Lz. Before she had the 4Lz she had nerves of steel. She never ever fell on triple jumps. Then she lost at JGPF and nationals because she fell on 4Lz, and after that she started falling on triples. Now by the time she reached senior she can’t skate clean program, psychologically.
@@kthy31 its very sad - I wonder about the pressure she is getting from those around her, especially her parents - do you remember the Russian Championships in 2019 same problem. There was a golfer can't remember his name, brilliant potential but choked in every competition. There is a lot more to being a champion than physicality you need a mind of steel
Love a dramatic salchow entrance, Dave! I used to end my free skate with a falling leaf split mohawk 3s+3t coming right after the straight line footwork. Always a good GOE getter lol
I actually think Kostornaia should go to Mishin rather than Trusova... She already has the artistry down and needs help with the technical side of things. I think Mishin could help her with the lutz and 3A better than Plushenko. Well deserved win for Elizaveta, so happy for her! I actually really like both her programme and her dresses this year (normally hate her dresses).
I think Rozanov (aka hot Sergei) is the one trying to help her the most with the 3A, she has already lost it once and he was that one that got it back, we just need patience, this things take time... I hope she can get it back quickly and that she can work on her program, she’s such a beautiful skater :)
isa azevedo for all the talk about Rozanov’s mastery of 3A, Akatieva and Kamila have shown gorgeous 3As while Trusova’s 3A remains inconsistent with an overly curved entry, Kostornaia is nowhere close, and Zhilina has yet to compete hers too. Who knows what is happening anymore
@@Plaspos rozanov doesn’t coach trusova and I personally don’t think aliona is “nowhere close” getting her 3A back, they released a video of her trying it and it wasn’t that bad, as for kamila and sofya, sergei used to coach them both, but I agree they don’t need him for now, we’ll be able to know better in the future (if they struggle or lose it and can get it back without him), lastly, veronika hasn’t performed hers yet (just like kamila...) but you can see in the videos she (and her sister) have great and solid technique, hope we can see it in competition, girl has some amazing textbook jumps and great height to them!
I know the details and the final results to this cup but I actually didn't have the time to watch the SP and FP of all the ladies this week, and I honestly just can't anymore... First of all, I don't feel the same excitement and emotions as I did last year watching the programmes and secondly, I feel sorry for trusova even tho I never rooted for her. She worked so hard to improve and was the best during these cups. This was quite unexpected for me, kinda thought she'd end up being the first. About Alena's FP, I think the choreo was average, even meh imo. Nothing impressive, and I never thought I'd say this, but I liked her performances better when she was with eteri. It surprised me she ended up being second, considering she didn't do a "special" jump (3A or a quad) but I guess it's cause sasha messed up
This gran-prix was way far more boring than it could be. With such level of performances Russia wouldn’t take any medals on international competitions. Kostornaya is just becoming a skater of Gulyakova’s level (for whom it’s supposed to be good to take 5-6 places on Russian nationals). Today on the show they looked almost same. I just hope she’ll work harder and come back on her previous level, and by saying that I don’t mean only 3 axel. She deserves better programs first of all. Nothing to say about Trusova. Poor girl, she needs some wise coach. Lisa was a star there and ofc nobody expected that. But again, even with her 3axels, she wouldn’t win if Trusova and Kostornaya were in shape, and Anna was present. So she was lucky and I’m really glad she won, she’s a real fighter
@@sonyaklevakina8461 I actually forgot that Anna wasn't there! So yeah definitely, if sasha was more consistent and with Anna there everything would've turned out differently. I was happy for liza tho, pretty sure everyone was! About kostornaia, she'll def improve
@@chocolateperfume752 it's refreshing watching ladies event without Eteri skaters. It's nice that I didn't need to see Eteri bonus in action this week. That bonus point created many turmoil among FS fans lol.
Not sure what everyone else thinks for for me TSL episodes “introductions” (talking about sweaters, Galina, stuff not related to figure skating) become longer and longer with every episode. I understand when it happens in the off-season but Rostelecom cup discussion starts after ONE hour!! Maybe it is to attract other target audience than figure skating fans but for real figure skating your “small talk” becoming waaaay too long and even longer than actual event discussions. That’s why a lot of people are asking for time stamps.
Hahahaha, cool comment!!!!!!! - well you know: He is PLUSHENKO!!!!!! - every Virus will bow its head in fear and admiration in front of him and quickly go away! :-) :-) :-)
The hair of Aljona....was simply wonderful, adapted to the music topic- perfect to "Dance for me Wallis". You know in which time this music, this story played. It is a joy to watch her.
If you took away the quads, who would likely be considered the best skater on the men's and ladies side each?? For the men, I'm thinking Jason Brown is far and away the best quality skater, his knee bends, footwork, and spins are exquisite...for the ladies? This week it definitely wasn't Kosternia or Trusova....LOL. I'd love to hear everyone else's thoughts...
Men: Jason, Kolyada, Keegan, Hanyu. Ladies: Kaori, Wakaba, Usacheva, Valieva, obviously Kostornaia at her best. If we took away all the jumps, not just the triples, then the best are Satoko, Marin, Karen, and Zhenya
50:44 The beginning of the song used a clip from that Will Farrell pair skating comedy movie that the ShibSibs used in their Hip Hop program. Given that the song was by both Kanye and Jay-Z and they used Jay-Z in the free dance, I always thought that it was cut from the beginning.
Lenox often has great ice skate/skater Christmas ornaments. I have several from over the years and my skate ornament collection is 30 years in the making since I was a kid.
1:18:13 OMG. Same sentiments. I feel that the ladies should be 18 years of age before going to Seniors and allowing them quads on both SP and FS. I feel that girls must mature first (both body and mind) to have a longer career. I can't sometimes fathom that top female skaters have to retire at their teenage years. It is too heartbreaking. And with that they would want to look more carefully on their health and how long can they stay on the sport.
The fact that none of Eteri's seniors competed but Alina and Kamila went to skate at the exhibition I screamed 😭😂 the pettiness edit: I meant her senior ladies
And yea its not pettiness at all. It happens when your team has so many ISU champions that are popular internationally. Altho the competition was dominated by Russians (due to covid), its still an international event under ISU thats why inviting internationally renowned skaters is a common thing. It has nothing to do with Eteri. Its just that Eteris skaters are champions.
Wow, Rostelecom did not go as I expected! I was surprised that Tuktymysheva won the event. Kostornaia was second as expected, still w/o the 3A, but that was to be expected. No Trusova on the podium, though...the free skate was really bad. For her, that is. She did fall on the attempted 3A in the SP, but I didn't think she got injured! Poor girl. She fought like a champion, though, putting out all those quads like the gutsy fighter she is. I don't think this is a bad thing, though. This is still just one small event in the scheme of things. Trusova has over a year to get everything together. The pandemic has changed things, definitely, and this should be a time of reflection for her. No doubt Plushy and the rest of the team is planning things out for Trusova, their best bet for Olympic champion in Beijing, so I'm not too worried about Trusova. I think that Tuktyamysheva should have a chance to go to Beijing, now that she's consistent. Kostornaia still has time to get that 3A, and maybe a quad. I don't know why she dyed her hair to be so blonde. She's pretty enough without the dye. Too bad about Medvedeva and Scherbakova; getting sick with COVID and/or pneumonia can't be good for their training nor their chances to make it to Beijing. Valieva could potentially go over Scherbakova for Beijing. It will be heartbreaking for one of these girls not to be chosen to go to the Olympics. The younger Russian boys are looking good. Btw, the boy with the 4F is Andrei Mozalev, junior World champion and YWOG silver medallist. Very talented kid; would put him over Aliev and Samarin to go to Beijing. Gummenik is a breath of fresh air, too. Kolyada looking sharp; can't wait to see all the top men's skaters compete against each other again. Really looking forward to next weeks' NHK.
NHK without Rika, Sakoto, Yuzuru, Shoma. Sorry not interested 😂 Almost know the result already. ladies will be Kaori 1st Mai or Wakaba 2nd 3rd maybe Mako or Tomoe...... Wait, You Young is in the list? Then maybe 1st-3rd. Men Yuma 1st
@@靖理 I'm very interested to see the results of this competition, even without those four. Mai Mihara we haven't seen in a while, Kaori and Wakaba could definitely take this, but You Young has a 3A. Mana Kawabe has been working on a 3A as well, since she's Hamada's student, too. Yuma could be in first, but so could Shun Sato or Kazuki Tomono. Also, I want to see how the ice dance competition will go. Daisuke Takahashi's and Kana Muramoto's debut as an ice-dance couple is something that many in the skating community will be waiting to see.
When you mentioned Daleman's costume I checked and it's atrocious. The 'cropped' concept was unnecessary and uncalled for, but it wasn't only that. It's tacky, and kinda false... it does remind me of my 11 years old costumes from the dollar store...
her presentation and polish would have been refreshing here but the technique deterioration is sad to watch. She does tend to deliver domestically though so who knows
Kolyada could win it all. Nathan needs to stop coasting & get serious, starting with those crappy "costumes". Who cares what your college friends think? (Just MHO, but just remember when he started wearing those floppy shirts.) Like Jonathan, I enjoyed Nugumanova. Beautiful SP and its nice to see beautiful SKATING is still taught in Russia!
@Marina Radoveliuk Then I'd prefer Nathan just wear a more fitted black shirt, like he does in practice. Those floppy shirts ruin his line. Although, his SP one waa better this year. It is remarkeable the amount of great lady skaters in Russia, so I guess that brings attention. Kinda like the USA had in the 90's. But no social media then, so it was mostly positive press.
So you think men’s skating just a runway show? Nathan is free to wear whatever he likes, who cares your opinion? Kolyada could win it all? lmao. He’s only third place after sp at rostelecom and didn’t skate clean the free that had two quads only! His consistency is never there. He won’t have any chance to beat Nathan or even come close to him, period.
@@yolandaguo7153 Nathan risks judges turning on him if he doesn't take his packaging seriously: look what they did to Hanyu for repeating programs too much last year. Skaters do fall in and out of favor for arbitrary reasons and skating next to Kolyada is going to make Nathan look like a slob. I'm not saying Kolyada would win based on this, but do you think Hanyu won't benefit from it? Nathan can't afford to lose the judges' favor if Hanyu is in form, and if his GOE and PCS take a hit, Hanyu can overtake him. It's stupid to risk that over a shirt.
@@iris7484 I agree Kolyada’s skating skill is sublime but the program? Sorry I don’t find it that magnificent coz balletic program is quite a bore to me. And he hardly skates clean at competitions, falls and pops here and there, which probably takes away much of the beauty of his programs. Besides, skating next to him can make the other skaters look like a slob? Sounds like he’s Hanyu lol. Don’t think he has such magic. And given the fact that he often messed up the sp but Nathan was placed either one or two, they have few chances to skate next to each other in the free skate.
@@yolandaguo7153 Fair enough. I think Kolyada is a long shot and a win for him would depend on him getting his 4Lz and going perfectly clean which I've never seen him do, and on top of that , Nathan and Hanyu would have to mess up. Nathan is an obvious favorite to win anything at the moment, but (whether you like him or not) Hanyu pays a LOT of attention to presentation, and if it came down to perfect skates from both of them, that gives Hanyu the edge. To judges, Kolyada's attention to detail (again; whether it works for you or doesn't) shows, and combined with Hanyu, it's kind of like Brown with the quad: like "okay every one else is doing this, so why aren't you?" If it were just Kolyada, I wouldn't be saying this, same as when it was just Hanyu it wasn't worth saying either. But when other top skaters are doing something and one of them isn't, it starts to affect their reputation. Chen has stiff shoulders when he skates and swings that free leg like a barn door when he lands a jump, so there's already room for fickle judges to change their minds about his GOE and PCS. When you combine Hanyu, Kolyada - even Brown and Uno - then now something that wasn't a big deal last season puts Chen in distant fourth or even fifth in terms of packaging, in a way that draws attention to his deficiencies in form and posture. I'm not trying to push an agenda with any one of these skaters, but I think it's something Chen may need to be aware of. A shirt in itself is minor but reputation can be eroded by the stupidest things, and opens the door to critique very real shortcomings that have been getting overlooked since he took his first world title. Of course, this season none of them will actually compete against each other so it doesn't really matter. But for the low, low price of a longer shirt, he can avoid the risk altogether. In my opinion, anyway.
Just some random thoughts: 1) excuse me for correcting you, but it's pronounced iGnatov (like in 'ignite'), not iñatov 😉 2) i wonder why no one talked about Eva-Lotta, she was such a breathe of fresh air at Rostelecom, definitely one of the best senior debuts this year 3) I don't think Trusova will ever get Mishin as a coach (considering Plushenko is his former student and Professor has his own girls to care for). Kostornaya, on the other hand, might end up in St.Petersburg (or in Snow Leopards, just like Tarakanova did after leaving Angels and Sambo-70) - because Evgeni doesn't seem to care about her at ALL. Going back to Sasha, I won't be surprised if one day (probably after the Olympics if she doesn't win) we might see her in Champery or in team Raf (or even in Cricket club which I strongly doubt but you never know) 4. With all due respect to Eteri, the gala was overloaded with her students, and Kamila having an appearance not once, not twice, but three times is too much. And by placing their bets on her so obviously the Fed makes an amount of pressure on this already mentally unstable young skater almost unbearable
Totally agree about Eva lotta. I’ve been very excited about her every time she competes. She has something very unique. I also noticed she had much better/improved expression at this event. Very much looking forward to seeing what she can accomplish!

Kostornaya has said several times that she really wants to do Edith Piaf but is saving it until she's old enough to deliver a mature preformance, so fully expect to see that next season. Think it will be a good fit.
It could work!
@@TheSkatingLesson definitely!
Liza worked the crowd, but it was all a bit heavy and large part of her program was in small circles in the middle of the ice.
Also please can someone make a petition to change Kostornaia's FS dress.. her exhibition dress looks much better
Liza’s spins are looking great!

Rumors of Sambo70 having COVID. Anna WD due to the flu or pneumonia and Evgenia Medvedeva has COVID and is in the hospital and she recently turned 21 (like Ashley Wagner-Dave mentioned this briefly)
9:59 Medvedeva: withdrawal from Rostelecom (Nugumanova was her replacement in the event).
Kolyada - seriously, I was in near tears during his FP; so beautiful!
It’s a great program!!! Love the choreography.
I KNOOOW!!! The effort and heart he put into it, amaaazing! ❤
Brilliant program!
We need to see this in Beijing! Absolutely breathtaking.
What a performance by kolyada. It came from his soul.
I'm so glad- U mentioned Nugumanova. Yes, she looks so classy on ice, like Nancy Kerrigan was.
You’re giving me life , spasibo
I really enjoyed seeing Liza skate so well, it brought me back to 2014/15 - a simpler time.
She did very well!
Her skating just always seems like she’s skating in small circles making up the choreography as she goes
Kostornayas hair in the free was *questionable*...
This was such an interesting competition. Tuktamysheva is over the age of 18 (over the hill in skating) and considered "geriatric". Trusova was a complete wreck . My heart went out to her.
I like Elizaveta and glad she won
I felt the same. I think Plushenko is putting too much into her program🇦🇺
over 18 is not "over the hill" in skating. Liza T. is finally understanding what it means to skate a program and relate to the music, IMO.

It will be a game changer because it forces everyone, skaters and coaches, to think long run, which means technique, health, etc.
не согласен.

I think she will do it!
Oh, you think her spins were better? I've never been a fan of her spins and don't feel like they were any different at this competition...
I was also confused by this can someone clarify what was Trusova doing?:)
Incorporating this ‘wow costume effect’ into program with 4 quads is just too much.
@@sonyaklevakina8461 Agree. No athlete needs to worry about a costume change in an already jam packed program. That would be so stressful.
And what do spikes have to do with Romeo and Juliet?
I only noticed it after it was pointed out. Wouldn't they get in the way with spins? I preferred the older costume.
It is clear that the jump is not ready!
Tbf, Aliona has always taken the approach that delievering clean programs are paramount. It's the one thing that sets her apart from the others.
How in the world can Trusova fall 4 times, under rotate 3 quads and miss 3rd place by a hair? She should have been out of the top 6!
Agreed
Her PCS was 10 points too high. I guess they didn't want to totally embarrass her
Fully shared
I agree!
The base value was still high, I mean she had tec scores over 100 points so 64 isn't much...

I have been waiting for this! That result was a shocker!
@Skate Lover I might have read it wrong is that having it translated from Russian to Spanish. They always loos things in translation.
Laughed out aloud at Jonathan calling Kolyada “the Angel of Mishin” 🤣
Mishin Control here :D
Jonathan- I am on the same emotional level as you regarding the Russian men this year. I have really been enjoying their outings at the various stages of the Russian cup.
Kolyada - the shoulders down make all the difference. And to throw that perfect 3A in at the end? The boy has technique.
Yes, he has!!!!!
Everyone wonders about that. What a mockery of Nugumanova getting lower PCS than Trusova for this particular skate.
@@LiliyaUgay nugumanova deserves so much more PCS. it’s like she’s getting laughed at by the judges 😠
Bar exams in 24 hours but...Someone talk to me about trusova
I wish you to do better than her at the Cup. Way better))
@@MMG1800 Right? I feel like sacking Ilinykh was when it started to go downhill for her. She looked so good at test skates
@@MMG1800 Sorry, may I ask who is ilinykh? A dance coach?
how did you do??
I believe Mishin would be able to perfect Trusova's jumping technique and make her a more consistent skater. But, she also needs someone who will continue to push for improvement in SS, interpretation ... I don't know if Mishin's team can give her that push
If i see Kolyada right now, i would say yes... and btw, i think Trusova is not ready yet to have complicated program both in artistry and technicality. I think for now she should stick with her strong point on jumps.
Mikhail’s fp ❤️Mikhail’s exhibition ❤️ Mikhaïl himself❤️
Maybe Mischin was filming Sasha for a reason we don't know. He is the jump master. He could fix her jumps in time for the Olympics. But will he want to?
Well, I wish he could, but don't think Plushenko just let her go
Plush won’t let this happen cuz he wanna show off and demonstrate what a genius coach he is. Asking someone for help will ruin this myth
I haven't watched skating as closely but I am wondering how Mishin and Plushenko's relationship is as 'rival' coaches. Seems to be pretty close still!
In real proper kimono, you can barely walk and barely breath, it's design that way to make you "have proper posture" look "slow/ cautious/ conservative therefore elegant"
The fabric is thick, heavy, and too long for skating.
Totally agree with the hair comment she looks like either Margaret Thatcher or Lee Radzwill
Guys, do you know what Kozlovskii screamed out loud after their long program? “It’s OUR place! Get in the line!” Like just after it’s ended lol!
He also repeated it in his interview later.
Sounds so irrespective to Mishina and Gallyamov who are in the same team of moskvina
@@sonyaklevakina8461 yes I completely agree! Mishina and Galliamov seem nicer people to my personal taste. Even though I like both teams
Seriously? What a twat!
@@benbailey159bb yep! And you can notice Boikova rolls her eyes pretty often when marks are not so high, according to their expectations, for instance in Kazan Cup this year.
This will make the next year very interesting!
Nugumanova was one of Zagitova’s peers in junior 2016-2017,
Lovely skaters
Who are you talking about at 49:06? Edit - Khudaiberdieva? Did they do an Up program? Edit 2: found it, watched it. I actually thought it was well done, except for that movement but it does show the sadness of old age. It's heartbreaking. Ugh, that was a sad movie, too.
Boikova and Kozslovski was my moment of the week. That long was sheer perfection and made me actually feel something. IT had me in tears by the end, absolutely incredible
It was excellent!
It was something, especially after their not so perfect performance at the cup
Their joy gave me all the feels! She is so fierce and when things go right, she just exudes happiness.
U're right. B/K = World class !!!
I occasionally skip to the skating talk, so glad I didn't. "Its not brown Dave... its LIGHT brown" I laughed out loud 😂😂😂
Direct quote!
I didn't get a notification! How dare youtube deny me!
Unacceptable~!!~
I live for the gossip from Dave's rink.
I think Valieva might win Russ Nats...
If she gets the 3As back, absolutely. But that’s a big question mark.
If she gets the 3A back my bets are on her and Kamila battling for Gold. Anya depending on how she recovers from her illness might complete the podium. Sasha will depend on the quads and Zhenya is just a big question mark rn so maybe Liza will medal again, who knows?
I don’t think her objective will be to win the Nationals. I think she just needs to be in top 3 seniors (inc Anna) in case European or Worlds happen.
Moskvina pairs are always next level
100%
Galliamov is the new diva in fs. Not in a bad way. Probably the most likeable men in pairs right now. I love B/K too. I hope both teams get a medal in the Olympics.
They both have a great chance.
Oh he is great. The power and Control that he hot.amazing
"LLAik BLOO! And it has special eggs!"
Say what, now?😂😂😂
I feel bad for Zagitova. The girl never stood a chance despite what she accomplished and could still accomplish. She is always dismissed. 🤷🏻♀️
@@Plaspos a good observation
@@kthy31 its very sad - I wonder about the pressure she is getting from those around her, especially her parents - do you remember the Russian Championships in 2019 same problem. There was a golfer can't remember his name, brilliant potential but choked in every competition. There is a lot more to being a champion than physicality you need a mind of steel
It’s 3:07pm here in San Antonio on a Sunday but I’m going to grab a glass of wine and click play...because...2020!
Rostelecom cup ladies: 1:16:50
Omg i've been waiting so long for this to come out! And by "so long" I mean like 8 hrs 😂
My favourite in Ladies was Nugumanova. Her short was stunning.
Kostornaia cooking in the short. Compliments to the chef.
You know it!
completely agreed Evgenia is giving Ashley vibes big time. I fully expect her to withdraw from her next competition mid-program citing boot infection
I've been a fan since Day 1! Love the intro, lol.
8:43 looooool the pause before made it even more hilarious
I’ve been looking forward for this.
Enjoy!
I don't know with Anna, seeing her performances in the last 2 Russian cups she was definitely not in shape as well.
@@yohanes2034 but u know, she gets overscored as well, so that would've def changed things up
@@chocolateperfume752 it's refreshing watching ladies event without Eteri skaters.
It's called being self obsessed and narcissistic!!
Why the hell can't Yevegny Pliushenko keep his mask over his nose? It doesn't do a damn bit of good to wear it like that.
You KNOW why
They even cut to him adjusting his mask but still keeping it under his nose! Literally no point in it
Hahahaha, cool comment!!!!!!! - well you know: He is PLUSHENKO!!!!!! - every Virus will bow its head in fear and admiration in front of him and quickly go away! :-) :-) :-)
Hoo boy there’s a lot to talk about in this episode
Why does it have to be Sinitsina and Katsalapov? I will take any other Russian dance team.
The hair of Aljona....was simply wonderful, adapted to the music topic- perfect to "Dance for me Wallis". You know in which time this music, this story played. It is a joy to watch her.
Only a small fraction of watchers even know the movie, to the rest it is just an old-fashioned hairdo diminishing her ethereal beauty
My 2 favorites Russians won! Misha is so dreamy. 😍🥰 Liza is so fierce! ☝️👑 I especially enjoyed this episode of TSL. It seemed so joyful! 😃😊
Thoughts on Trusova’s arm spike deployment?
If you took away the quads, who would likely be considered the best skater on the men's and ladies side each?? For the men, I'm thinking Jason Brown is far and away the best quality skater, his knee bends, footwork, and spins are exquisite...for the ladies? This week it definitely wasn't Kosternia or Trusova....LOL. I'd love to hear everyone else's thoughts...
Jason Brown
@@TheSkatingLesson : Men: Jason, Mikhail, Shoma; Ladies:???
Men: Jason, Kolyada, Keegan, Hanyu.
Ladies: Kaori, Wakaba, Usacheva, Valieva, obviously Kostornaia at her best. If we took away all the jumps, not just the triples, then the best are Satoko, Marin, Karen, and Zhenya
aliona does have hillary clinton hair
Hillary’s hair never looked that good.
Sunday with TSL-the best Sunday
50:44 The beginning of the song used a clip from that Will Farrell pair skating comedy movie that the ShibSibs used in their Hip Hop program. Given that the song was by both Kanye and Jay-Z and they used Jay-Z in the free dance, I always thought that it was cut from the beginning.
Can you add the subtitles?
The sweater was well worth the hunt, Dave! It gets +5 GOE just like Sasha's free program dress does.
Thank you!!!!
More Elizaveta Nugumanova please.
The fact that none of Eteri's seniors competed but Alina and Kamila went to skate at the exhibition I screamed 😭😂 the pettiness
edit: I meant her senior ladies
It’s also irresponsible since they most likely been exposed to covid
Moris competed and won silver
They are invited cuz theyre ones of the champion stars in russian fs. ISU Galas often have invited skaters from the country where the event is held
Also, if inviting olympic champion & junior world champion is “pettiness”, then so be it.
“You just invited your cold to us!” Classic!
Hehehe
Dave can you send a link to the interview yesterday? BTW the sweater looks great and good fit.
It is in the description box!
Rostelecom Ladies 1:16:52
Sorry not interested 😂
Almost know the result already.
ladies will be Kaori 1st Mai or Wakaba 2nd 3rd maybe Mako or Tomoe......
I really don't think it is appropriate.
She designs her own costumes, this one is really bad.
how did J get this far without knowing patronyms?
Shcherbakova would have slayed this competition had she been there...
I don't think so. She was looking pretty rough and having jump issues in her last competition.
her presentation and polish would have been refreshing here but the technique deterioration is sad to watch. She does tend to deliver domestically though so who knows
Kolyada could win it all. Nathan needs to stop coasting & get serious, starting with those crappy "costumes". Who cares what your college friends think? (Just MHO, but just remember when he started wearing those floppy shirts.)
Like Jonathan, I enjoyed Nugumanova.
To judges, Kolyada's attention to detail (again; whether it works for you or doesn't) shows, and combined with Hanyu, it's kind of like Brown with the quad: like "okay every one else is doing this, so why aren't you?"
If it were just Kolyada, I wouldn't be saying this, same as when it was just Hanyu it wasn't worth saying either.
Just some random thoughts:
1) excuse me for correcting you, but it's pronounced iGnatov (like in 'ignite'), not iñatov 😉
2) i wonder why no one talked about Eva-Lotta, she was such a breathe of fresh air at Rostelecom, definitely one of the best senior debuts this year
3) I don't think Trusova will ever get Mishin as a coach (considering Plushenko is his former student and Professor has his own girls to care for). Kostornaya, on the other hand, might end up in St.Petersburg (or in Snow Leopards, just like Tarakanova did after leaving Angels and Sambo-70) - because Evgeni doesn't seem to care about her at ALL. Going back to Sasha, I won't be surprised if one day (probably after the Olympics if she doesn't win) we might see her in Champery or in team Raf (or even in Cricket club which I strongly doubt but you never know)
Very much looking forward to seeing what she can accomplish!
this and that on a Sunday? In THIS economy???
The jumping prodigies are always too focused to pay any attention to the music while they skate, even if they have personality off the ice.
