Okay, so I stumbled on this channel not too long ago and I must say that I am inspired by Nikki's free spirit. I am 58 and it's just me and my wife now (our two boys/young men are all grown up and out of the house). Nikki has inspired me to retire early and take the wife on an extended road trip across the country. Life is just too short and there is just too much beauty out there to see and visit. Thank you for the inspiration Nikki.

Nikki, a Sienna saved my life. I was rear ended while parked on the side of my friends busy highway road, when a distracted speeder rammed into me going over 60. If I was in a regular car, I might have been crushed, even pushed into traffic. I escaped with only minor whiplash. If you maintain and change your fluids properly, they're wonderful vehicles that will last and last. I am surprised Toyota doesn't buy it for you, considering what a wonderful ambassador you've been for the Prius.

I watched on patreon already but I don't care, I will just watch it again. The Sienna really suits you. And I can tell you from personal experience: A car that does butt-conditioning is really nice. No sticking to a hot seat, no freezing when getting into the cold car in winter. I was in my 2003 Sienna for about 2 years I only had the front two seats and it was wonderful being in there. I put all the other seats in storage. It really is amazing how much room there is in those Sienna's. I cut out cardboard inserts to the size of all of the interior windows from the front seats back and spray painted them flat black and you couldn't see in them at all plus those windows were tinted.

You can use a stiff material like posterboard and cut a paper template to size.
Then have the posterboard wrapped in foam and sewed into a black fabric shell for temperature and sound insulation.
Should do very well behind tinted glass.
You can even cut out a horizontal slat in the middle to look out at night on both sides and plug it up with the cutout.

The reason was all 4 tires had to be the exact same size within 3/32 of an inch or could damage the driver train just replacing one tire. Have over 120k on ours and never had a breakdown. There’s a number of videos on peoples mods and now premade kits out there but one hack I have done which I haven’t seen is I attached 8 ft 4 inch PVC pipe on the racks over each back door with hooks matching the grommets of a standard 6x8 tarp for awnings over each door. It’s a very affordable game changer for us. I use 3/4” pipe for stands though wooden stands are available too. And they fit in the 4 inch pipe. Looking forward to what you decide to do and all your future videos.

For what it's worth: I've been looking at the Sienna AWD as a camper van replacement for my Ford Econoline. They seem AMAZING, but I'm still an armchair driver of one sitting at home. From what I understand that 1500W inverter drags power directly from the traction battery. If you are using it through the night you might find the ICE starts once in a while or maybe never for a small load like a fridge (might need vehicle "on" in park). I've watched videos on removing the 2nd row seat - doesn't seem too bad. Someone has a UA-cam video and a link to a plug-in adapter that gets ride of the air bag warning light. It seems like the big thing to remember is to disconnect the 12V battery before unplugging the seats just so you don't accidentally trigger the air bags. And this model year has a spare tire option that fits inside on the driver's side rear in the cargo area. What's also cool with this (I think is true of all modern Toyota hybrids) is that you can leave the vehicle on in park at night and leave the temperature set where you want. The vehicle will run the AC or heat as needed to keep you comfy. Fuel consumption is microscopic for AC and very small for heat - maybe $2 / night where there is an extreme temperature. And a company in Prescott AZ has a nice lift kit for it. Overall - what a GREAT vehicle for a mini camper van setup!!

Her dad is also a fun person with an equaly relaxed fun outlook on life. I'm buying a new car soon (it's going to be electric - so no stinking/polluting up the beautifull places you visit) and am now even more considering an MG 5. It's a stationwagon, not too expensive, probably allows a full length bed in the back, and has V2L (Vehical to Load) - meaning I can plug in a waterheater, induction stove, whatever, up to 2200W. Camping deluxe. Europe also has beautifull locations to visit.

Except 14 mpg. Since you worked for Toyota tell me this. Why do their trucks and suvs get such crappy mileage? Is obvious Toyota knows how to make vehicles that get good mileage. One of my coworkers owns a late model highlander and and it gets 14mpg. I own a Tacoma and have a Colorado work truck. Comparably loaded. (One tools and parts, the other fun camping stuff) the Colorado gets almost 20 mpg on crappy sheetz fuel and the Tacoma gets 14 on much better Costco premium. Even empty I've only ever gotten 19 out of it one time and that was coming down out of the hills of Tennessee. I drove a company Silverado that has a V8 and it got 25. (Granted empty but and empty tundra (V8) gets 13. Is it a government mandate that the Toyotas get lousy mileage so they don't put the domestics out of business?

We have a 2004 Sienna Front Wheel Drive. I took the Middle & Rear seats out and made it into camper for myself, the wife and our Cattle Dog. With the Rear Seat out, we gained some "Trunk" space where I have food & other Survival Gear Stashed. I'm 67and my wife is 57, so we don't plan to go 4-wheel'n.
It's not the hybrid, so we get about 23-25 MPG, which is still good IMHO. About the only things I still want to do is put Different Tires on it, some Driving Lights, and figure out a space for the Mobile Ham Radio. With a few more "tweaks" I can provision it for Two Weeks for two people and our Dog.

One suggestion for the coffee dilemma: make a coffee bag with a filter and some dental floss. Place coffee grounds in the center of a coffee filter, gather the edges together, wrap dental floss around the “neck” and tie it shut. Double knot it, to be sure it holds. A forceps (originally a surgical tool) is great to tie the knot (available at Walmart in fishing equipment or Harbor Freight in hobby tools).

Y, was thinking of plugin hybrids (or even full EV), that could run the climate control just off the main traction battery all night long, instead of having to cycle the gas engine??
Won't the hybrid run climate off that too?
Teslas have "camp mode" and dog mode, to run climate all night long silently, w/ no emissions. Full BEVs would make it bit harder to plan travelling especially remote as need to take charging into account (though I succeeded w/ Death Valley fine, charged free 350+ miles at hotel, but no way would I try the drive to racetrack playa like she did!! no spare!)
Also note, the AWD Sienna won't have a spare tire :(

    • @Hooner77

The RAV4 hybrid would be a great choice or the Highlander hybrid. The problem with a Plug-In Hybrid (or EV) is you need a place to plug in. Most of the places Nikki camps for the night are lacking in electrical hookups. Plug-In's work well for people with short commutes and a place to charge overnight. You can drive back and forth to work using no gas. But then on the weekend you can take longer trips and not worry about running out of juice.

When camping it has something called "room mode." As long as the EV battery is near full, you can run the car's heat or cooling and it will last all night. If you can't plug it in to charge it for the next day you can put the engine in charge mode and it will charge up the EV battery as you drive so you can use room mode again. I would think the 3rd gen Sequoia (when it comes out in 2023) will be where you want to look. It has the space you need for living in it, comes as a hybrid-only, can tow a camper/RV down the road if you ever choose to go that route, and has more ground clearance, real 4WD system, and might also have a locking rear axle option for getting places none of these other vehicles will ever dream of getting to.

Nice videos! You have me thinking that Toyota needs to manufacturer a van that gets great fuel economy, has a high ground clearance and is a camper. So a part time four wheel drive plug in hybrid, air suspension to raise or lower the car, insulated body, And some type of hot water making device, maybe a air to water heat pump. I will be setting up my 2020Toyota Tacoma off road for camping soon. Thanks and keep up the great work! Exploring is fun!!! Terry D!

You are so right! There is a niche in the market that seems to not be filled. Everything is geared towards a high-price bracket and most of us can’t afford it. I love your idea!
