Tip on repairing that shield under the car: tape isn't going to last long, especially once the weather gets warm. Use zip ties. You may have to drill a few holes in the plastic shield but it's a great way to fix that sort of thing on the cheap.

    • @greenhippie5360
      @greenhippie5360 2 роки тому +3

I'm pretty sure I saw some zip ties in action along with the tape :) You're right about that tape though. It will likely come off and become roadside litter if it's left on there too long.

She did use zip ties, it's in the video. She was joking about the duct tape.

Zip tie needs to be replaced once per year. they become brittle over time and won't last forever

My wife and I are full time RV’ers in a large class A with two dogs and a cat. But something about living small, and about you, your dog and a Prius is very appealing. We really enjoy your video’s, however as a retired law enforcement officer, please be careful, there are bad people out there, I am glad you have camper that can be a deterrent.

Great episode! We lived in Pahrump for 12 years back in the 90's and 2000's when the population was just 15,000 and the only grocery store was a small mom & pop store up off the highway with no decent produce. You would have had a tough time finding any ingredients for a bag salad in those days. So many options and services now, glad to see it thriving. We sure do enjoy coming along on the wild ride with you every week. Happy trails!

Furnace Creek (and Pahrump area) are normally just high, in terms of gas prices. Even in 2017 when I was out there, Pahrump was about $4.50 a gallon. I can only imagine what it is today. They get you at these stations because there are no other places really to get gas, which is why it makes camping in DV harder unless you have an RV, or you have spare gas cans and fill up at Beatty, which I think is more reasonable in terms of gas. But part of the reason it's so expensive is it's tourism and it's also in the middle of nowhere.

Just discovered the channel and I love it, it is fantastic. I'm a keen "adventure" motorcyclist and am used to doing lots of travel, but had a brain tumour diagnosis earlier this year leading to an emergency craniotomy to remove it on 14th Feb. My recovery is 6 - 12 months, and that means that here in the U.K. I have had my license suspended (Which is fair) and so no road adventures for a while for me. I was a bit down in the doldrums, but am back tracking through your video's and it's really given me a feel good buzz, helping me look forward to making a full recovery and hitting the road again myself. Loved this episode as my family and I were over on vacation from the U.K. in 2019 so managed to give the rented Tahoe a good workout in Death Valley. Keep the content coming and stay safe Nikki.

Time for my annual-ish tire advice after seeing that your tires are looking a little beaten down, hahaha. I couldn't entirely make out the brand/type of tire you have, with "AS" being a pretty popular model designation of all-season tires for many brands. But I could make out the load/pressure details as being 1356 lb max load at 44psi max pressure. That corresponds to Load Index 91. Couldn't see the speed rating, but it's surely not an issue, probably S (112mph) or T (118mph). So assuming stock size for a Gen2 Prius, and speed rating S, the tire is probably something like:
    185/65R15 91S or 185/65R15XL 91S
I think the minimum Load Index for Gen2 is 88ish, so it's good you have a bit higher load rated tires.
That's an uncommon Load Index for that size, so your tires are probably one size up, which happens to be the stock size for Gen3, Gen4, and Prius Prime (though some of them allow as low as Load Index 89):
"AS" 195/65R15 91S max load 1356 lb at max pressure 44psi. So you are running a better choice than the stock size.
I have that size on my Gen2 2005, but a higher Load Index and higher speed rating. They fit fine and never rub, despite the car having 230K miles and original suspension. So on my stock Gen2, I run:
    Michelin Xi3 195/65R15XL 95T max load 1521 lb at max pressure 51psi.
On my Prime, I replaced the stock 195/65 Toyo NanoEnergy tires with:
    ---------------------------------------------------
    Michelin Xi3 205/65R15XL 99T max load 1709 lb at max pressure 51psi
    ----------------------------------------------------
This is the best tire I've ever had on any Prius, and I've had many great sizes/types. Regrettably, I didn't think to swap them onto my Gen2 to check fit and whether they might rub when new, when hitting a hard dip in the road, etc. Because they''re expecting a vehicle the weight of a minivan, they roll with very little resistance, with only the weight of a Prius on them.
Their max pressure is 51psi, and I run mine at 50psi. With that CA-priced gas, the mpg boost of higher tire pressure is money in the bank. Don't let anyone tell you it makes the handling dangerous, it actually handles superbly. I've personally driven 80K in my Gen2, and 101K in my Prime, with 50psi at all 4 corners, on Michelin Xi3.
They are a snow/ice tire with many attributes of an off-road tire, yet at 50psi, I've found no difference in mpg from stock tires at stock or higher pressure. Some snow tires don't last for many miles, or aren't good in summer, but that isn't true of the Xi3. I've raced them hard through mountain hairpin turns in AZ when it was 110F+, and they still lasted 63K miles.
If you can fit them (ask the guys who installed your lift, or check that your pinkie, and preferably index finger, fits the front-rear gaps between your existing 195/65 tire and wheel well) are just a tremendously great tire in every way, the best-handling and highest-load tire I've every put on any Prius. I've since switched to 205/70R15 96T, taller tires for even more ground clearance, but they lack the race-car handling of the 205/65.
Last but not least, another reason to go with the highest load index tires you can, is that if you ever need to air down to get through crazy sand, the higher load index tires will safely carry the weight of the car down to a lower pressure if you can't air them back up immediately when you get back to pavement.
Not sure you'd be wanting to fill a Sprinter with diesel all the time this year, price-wise, though I think you've earned the right (and money) to live in any vehicle your heart desires! Riding the year out in a Prius makes sense, until we're sure that the war doesn't cause rationing. RVs might be the first to get hit by rationing, versus commercial vehicles and commuter-type cars. Stories from now-deceased old relatives, about rationing caused by war in Europe, have resurfaced in my head.

If you're going to run a diesel these days you should stay old school. The new common rails with the super low emissions are nothing but trouble. Here in the UK half the vehicles on the road are diesel and the new ones are always going wrong and costing £££ and the fuel is more expensive. A guy I know who lives in a sprinter got fed up and converted his to an old pump driven OM606. His old 2001 sprinter literally rusted away to nothing despite several massive interventions. 2000's era Mercedes vans should be wintered in the south away from the salt. A friend of mine has a Vito as a work van and we have sand blasted, patched and painted the underside with marine grade epoxy mastic called Jotun 87 and it has still rusted through in several places again.

Hi! From your newest sub! Yahoo promoted you from my interest in hiking. Love the scenery! Been along these locations myself. Your energy is really uplifting and Camper, "King of the Prius", is quite the sweet soul to travel with.

    LOVE YOUR SPIRIT!! 😻
I am always impressed when you are able to fix your car! 🥰
So here are some older person advice… I live in the Phoenix area and hike a lot... we have a lot of desert preserves areas that provide great hiking areas.
So here’s the kicker… for years I hiked without sunglasses and now I am paying the price for not protecting my eyes.
If I can offer you one bit of advice it’s to get some good sunglasses. Research it for yourself… the time we spend outdoors nowadays can have long lasting damage on our eyes when we are in the bright sunlight. I really wish I would’ve known that… Nobody ever told me. And something I never really thought about because I wear prescription glasses.
I wish you all the best! I’d love to hear if you ever plan to change your vehicle and if so what you would buy. Safe travels!

I agree about her Prius, I have a new AWD Prius and I wish I could lift it like hers and see what it could do!
