In acting, we are told NOT to ever cry, in order to invoke crying as a result. Crying comes from emotion, and emotion is caused by actions, and doing this method only makes everything feel fake, and technical - the opposite of what we are aiming for.

The act of keeping our eyes open for this long is painful, and when you’re on a film set and you’re crunched for time, sometimes you need to use any method possible to get the shot. But the decision should sprout from necessity and not laziness. If a director has enough time and if their actor can put themselves in that headspace, the best method is to illicit the actual response within yourself, I agree.

Good tutorial man. I too am a filmmaker. I once had a lady who had a very emotional scene after her father in story is deleted. As we began to roll, I pulled a project board with photos on it and held it where she could see it just off camera. I had placed a big photo of 4 members of her family she had lost over the past year. It worked. If I'm being honest though, it felt kinda slimy to me after the fact. So I might try this technique next time. My last film didn't really have any crying scenes so it never came up.
I know more easy method. I just staring on my subs quantity for one second and starting crying out loud, understanding the hopelessness and meaninglessness of my life. :(
