I think Illinois has two kickers that are 8 for 9 on the season and have hit from 48 and 59 yards. Special teams are huge. Sleep on kickers at your peril.
People attacking the kicker for this loss… to be honest, the fact that he was forced to kick the laces and still barely missed it is impressive. That kick was on the holder not spinning the ball on placement.

The off-season overhype in media (not just here), coupled with the September lamentation and predictable fury is laughable. NU is good, not great. 7-8 wins should have been the summer topic. Not 8-10 that raises expectations. Losing a tough, hard fought game is ok. We had chances. It was competitive. We are better than last year.
I feel like some fans didn't know this, but we weren't going to go undefeated this year. We are going to lose some games. The penalties sucked. And the fact we don't have a kicker sucks. And this game was not our best game. But, its definitely not panic mode
Here are my takeaways Wilson: Good offensive play calling by Satt, Dylan played good (he will get slandered by many for missing ONE throw but he played great), we couldn’t impose out will in the run game, our kicking game is an embarrassment, the defense got exposed, Tony Whites defensive gameplan running soft zone was pathetic & weak (bad teams prevent plays & good teams create plays on defense), discipline was not there, too many flags, refs called a rough game (Nebraska couldn’t get out of their own way & outside of a missed facemask that illini fans will complain about the refs missed a lot of calls on the that should have went Nebraskas way, gotta go for it on 4th down in that spot, bad clock management, and the defense & offensive line sh1t the bed it OT, I was impressed with Wright and Gottula though. It’s year 2 Wilson, we have a ways to go, there is still some Frost lingering on this team don’t forget that. Be greatful that we have Dylan to build around. I think that we will be legit contenders in two years.

We went to OT with an evenly matched team who is also ranked, its not like we got blown out. We are in year 2 of a rebuild and are still ahead of schedule at this point. Relax, folks. We are going to be just fine. Depending on how the other games of the weekend go, we still might be ranked 24 or 25
Not to mention you have a beast of a quarterback who, as a freshman, is doing better than most top QBs in college football, he's only going to get better. He learned some great lessons yesterday.

I had Nebraska by 4 in this game.I knew it would be close. If the WR doesn't lose the wrestling match for the ball or the field goal is made different story. Could easily have been 34-24 Nebraska. The good news is Nebraska has a QB and WRs that are going to be fun to watch. I am going to toss out Raiola's OT meltdown to lack of experience. Just not ready for that yet. Heart breaker for sure. Congrats to Illinois they had a better game and made those big plays when they needed to.
Chasing 3 is pretty darn ironic when you don't have a kicker. Not using Emmett seems to be a waist of talent. Rhamir has better vision than Donte, Donte runs into people, he doesn't make people miss. Donte is suited for pounding the ball late. Emmett and Rhamir need to be leading in carries. The defense needed a reality check after being overhyped and overestimating their ability. Now its time to go to the shop and fix the glaring problems. The next 3 games will prove if we have the coaches to fix the defense, run game and special teams.

Nebraska has to play well enough to overcome both our opponent and the officiating. Competent play on special teams would have allowed us to squeak by in this one. Signs of a pulse on defense would have helped. We didn't see either. The officiating was terrible, which, unfortunately, is what one can reliably expect from the Big Ten.
This is season 2. I think we need to tether our expectations a bit. I know we are champing at the bit to get back to winning football, but lets get there one step at a time. Bowl game is the goal this year. Next year lets aim for 8 or more wins and the next season let's compete for the Big 10. Otherwise we need to think about moving on.
I hope the media shuts up now. They need to focus on going bowling. The whole 10-2 shit needs to go away. Its gonna be a dogfight the rest of the season peope.
Bilema's team was ready to go and won in the trenches. Dylan played well, but our WR's don't get open which is a problem. On defense, we used 4 guys to take up 5 or 6, but we are not gap sound at LB. Our defenses biggest issue is that our secondary gives a big cushion and we can't cover well. There are no coverage sacks, which is an issue with a smart QB, who can roll out, and soft coverages. Our OLine is not good, maybe slightly better than last year, but they are still a weakness on our offense. I believe in Rhule and think he will get us there, but we have been over-hyped and not played anyone good yet, until now. I think Rhule tried to tell us this and pump the brakes, but we did not do ourselves any favors. I would've liked to see Gabe in on short yardage situations (3rd & 3 looking at you) and Johnson (Emmitt) get a few reps. That being said, we should beat Purdue, but vs Rutgers and Indiana, well hopefully we get one of those games. I could see us losing both, as both Indiana and Rutgers are decent teams. Getting to 7 or more wins this year would show really good growth, but we need to fix somethings. More aggression on defense as our secondary is suspect and it will help create miss-matches. We could really use a FB, better outside blocking by the WRs & TEs, and frankly we need to have a more consistent running attack. I'm not sure how we fix our OL or special teams issues, but those are our biggest issues , imo. I expect Tony White to fix the defense, but we need to blitz more and be aggressive.
I am with you Willy. These things are hard. Not sure if they are harder for fans who witnessed the national title seasons or those who starve for national relevance. It’s a gut punch for some, but for those of us who saw the championship seasons, there is a lot more building that is required
I am not worried about coach White leaves for a head coaching position. I wish him luck, so let’s stop talking about it. Our D depends on our front 3. They need more support from LBs and secondary with more blitz packages.
There is no killer instinct like almost every other team in college football possesses. My other team is Iowa State and even in their off years lately, they have had good games, beat ranked opponents. We can't continue down this path and expect fans to just accept it. Like you've said, we have accepted mediocrity in Lincoln, far too long
I'd like to see some anger on the sidelines when the chips are down! I want to see some passion during post-game interviews. The coaches and players need to get some fire in their eyes. They need to get a dominating mindset. Don't play to win the game...play to dominate the opponent!
Nebraska in all 4 games ran out of gas after halftime. If your team is running out of gas by halftime maybe you should have two teams ready to go or maybe try running some conditioning drills because these guys are not in shape, not even close. Illinois was in shape and handed NU their ass on a silver platter. I don't see 6 wins to get to a bowl. If we had hired Urban Meyer we would have been in a bowl game last year. We might be able to beat Purdue but that's about it. 4-8 maybe. It's plain as day they are not in shape! And there is no excuse for that, none, notta, zero!
Common denominator with all these one score losses is a bunch of seniors that don't know how to win. Is same oline and dline. They have been losing this way the whole time they've been here.
Are our cornerbacks really so terrible that we have to play 10 yards off the ball just to give up 8 yard out routes whenever the other team wants? I didnt see the defense be this conservative all year long last year. Terrible coaching and scheming by tony white. He was out coached
(1) Agree, outcoached. ILL identified weakenesses in TW's D and exploited them. (2) Super disappointed in the lack of physicality compared to ILL. The D was gassed by the end of the game. That should never happen. (3) The NU run game was anemic at best, especially at crunch time. (4) Special teams need to finally get fixed. Need 40 yd and in field goals to be virtually automatic to beat good teams. (5) Stupid penalties lead to losses in close games. I really hope Matt Rhule & Company take these deficiencies to heart and realize that without correcting them, NU will be stuck in the mediocrity zone.
Made a ton of dumb mistakes, but I’m not as worried as I would’ve been like in prior years. Rhule will get them ready and this week will be hell for the players and it’ll show next week.
Rhule is 2-20 against ranked teams. He always gets out coached, We have a program problem. Because we can't hire a decent winning coach. We aren't going anywhere w/ Rhule and crew.

The most obvious was the face mask grab which turned Alt's head around (no call) They call that it would had been game. Now you go to Purdue OMG all you have to do is show up and you will win. I'd agree. Illinois is a good team. Illinois is probably a top 20 to top 30 team. Nebraska is a good team and also probably top 20 to 30. I think Illinois would be favored at home and should have been the underdog going into Lincoln. I'd guess Illinois and Nebraska are both 7-9 win teams. Let's enjoy the rest of the season and go bowling.
I was there in '94-'97 and we are not anywhere near those teams. Haven't really been anything since. 0-8 in past OT games, haven't scored a point in 8, have -20 yards in those games, 4 INT's zero first downs. Says a lot. Add the 0-27 and we just aren't close. I hope we can win 6 to go bowling. I'm not holding my breath.

Special teams were awful, D was awful, penalties are out of control (4th game in a row), offense can’t score more than 7 in the 2nd half… That said, we were still in a position to get the W at the end of regulation (wide open receiver in the end zone and missed FG)… bu still can’t finish. Poor officiating went both ways, but the no calls in OT on the 3rd & 42 were unbelievable (targeting and late hit both completely ignored by the officials would have given us hope with a 1st down inside the 20). Bottom line we need to put this one behind us and.focus on Purdue…
We lose one game by another rank team and before say Matt Rule to be fired… our fan base is crazy. What would our fan base be saying if we made that last field goal for the win? Illinois is a good team

Well the 2 and 20 mark against ranked teams, when he is coaching dumpster fire programs back to life (Temple, Baylor and post Riley/Frost Nebraska) should not be surprising. He never stuck around long enough to go against many good teams when his team was good. And Oborne suffered under the "Can't win the big game" label most of his career.
Overrated? Listen chicken little, the sky isn't falling. Nobody but maybe the UA-cam "experts" were saying Nebraska was going to win 9 or 10 games this year. We're barely in season 2 of a rebuild. We have a true freshman quarterback. Both starting corners are injured now. We are down to a third string left tackle. We got beat by an undefeated ranked B1G team. I would rather lose a close game like this than get beat by an FCS team at home like Notre Dame did this year, or us in previous seasons. Take a breath. Rhule is a used car salesman. The only thing he can win is the presser to schmooze over NE media and thus fans. His coordinators are brutal. TW looked good last year bc we didn’t have an offense. SC rejoiced when Satt left. Forget the special teams. We have a child as a WR coach. He doesn’t know how to hire. He doesn’t know how to recruit talent. We have no kicker or secondary or line. He said Jeff Simms was an NFL talent. Enough said. Clock and game management is worse than peewee coaches. If he wasn’t so lucky to land one of the best QBs in the league bc the GA QB returned and he was a legacy we would be a 4 win team. The B1G is improving and we are not. Sounds familiar, he can’t win the big one. That’s what they said about Osborne. Just how did that turn out. We lost because their offense and defense was better than ours.
Still the same O-line. Average at best. Aside from the two forced fumble plays, the defense was poor all around. No tackles for loss or sacks by the D-line.
I think as a national rank we are somewhere between 35 and 40. I would have guessed 9-3 before this game but now I'm saying 7-5 is where we will be at. The worst thing those 4 and 5 star athletes considering us will probably go elsewhere. Special teams were abysmal, Buschini cannot kick the ball anywhere he wants the long kick to the wrong side of the field killed us with a huge return.
5-7 season incoming possibly 4-8. Every team on the remaining schedule looks better than Neb besides Purdue, and thats 50/50. I would suggest no one get their hopes up for a bowl or your soul is going to be crushed🤣

Undisciplined football gets you beat in games like that. They have to learn to win close games even though this team seems to be better than past years winning close games is a culture and at the moment Nebraska doesn’t have that. They will get there but it’s tough to win big 10 games when you commit dumb penalties and play undisciplined football.
The program has been going downhill for a very long time, and now year 2 in an actual rebuilding process they're 3-1. It will take awhile to actually build a great program. Trust the process stop drinking the kool-aid and support the program (tickets, merchandise) Go Big Red

Offense brings hope, defense really makes me scratch my head and fear Indiana, Rutgers and just about any other team with an offense.

Bilema's team was ready to go and won in the trenches. Dylan played well, but our WR's don't get open which is a problem. On defense, we used 4 guys to take up 5 or 6, but we are not gap sound at LB. Our defenses biggest issue is that our secondary gives a big cushion and we can't cover well. There are no coverage sacks, which is an issue with a smart QB, who can roll out, and soft coverages. Our OLine is not good, maybe slightly better than last year, but they are still a weakness on our offense. I believe in Rhule and think he will get us there, but we have been over-hyped and not played anyone good yet, until now. I think Rhule tried to tell us this and pump the brakes, but we did not do ourselves any favors. I would've liked to see Gabe in on short yardage situations (3rd & 3 looking at you) and Johnson (Emmitt) get a few reps.
That being said, we should beat Purdue, but vs Rutgers and Indiana, well hopefully we get one of those games. I could see us losing both, as both Indiana and Rutgers are decent teams. Getting to 7 or more wins this year would show really good growth, but we need to fix somethings. More aggression on defense as our secondary is suspect and it will help create miss-matches. We could really use a FB, better outside blocking by the WRs & TEs, and frankly we need to have a more consistent running attack. I'm not sure how we fix our OL or special teams issues, but those are our biggest issues , imo. I expect Tony White to fix the defense, but we need to blitz more and be aggressive.
I am with you Willy. These things are hard. Not sure if they are harder for fans who witnessed the national title seasons or those who starve for national relevance. It’s a gut punch for some, but for those of us who saw the championship seasons, there is a lot more building that is required

There is no killer instinct like almost every other team in college football possesses. My other team is Iowa State and even in their off years lately, they have had good games, beat ranked opponents. We can't continue down this path and expect fans to just accept it. Like you've said, we have accepted mediocrity in Lincoln, far too long

I'd like to see some anger on the sidelines when the chips are down! I want to see some passion during post-game interviews. The coaches and players need to get some fire in their eyes. They need to get a dominating mindset. Don't play to win the game...play to dominate the opponent!
Nebraska in all 4 games ran out of gas after halftime. If your team is running out of gas by halftime maybe you should have two teams ready to go or maybe try running some conditioning drills because these guys are not in shape, not even close. Illinois was in shape and handed NU their ass on a silver platter. I don't see 6 wins to get to a bowl. If we had hired Urban Meyer we would have been in a bowl game last year. We might be able to beat Purdue but that's about it. 4-8 maybe. It's plain as day they are not in shape! And there is no excuse for that, none, notta, zero!

Common denominator with all these one score losses is a bunch of seniors that don't know how to win. Is same oline and dline. They have been losing this way the whole time they've been here.

Tony always has played the dbs back. He has no faith in their man coverage.
Defense blowed big time especially penalties…
(1) Agree, outcoached. ILL identified weakenesses in TW's D and exploited them. (2) Super disappointed in the lack of physicality compared to ILL. The D was gassed by the end of the game. That should never happen. (3) The NU run game was anemic at best, especially at crunch time. (4) Special teams need to finally get fixed. Need 40 yd and in field goals to be virtually automatic to beat good teams. (5) Stupid penalties lead to losses in close games. I really hope Matt Rhule & Company take these deficiencies to heart and realize that without correcting them, NU will be stuck in the mediocrity zone.
Made a ton of dumb mistakes, but I’m not as worried as I would’ve been like in prior years. Rhule will get them ready and this week will be hell for the players and it’ll show next week.

I'd agree. Illinois is a good team. Illinois is probably a top 20 to top 30 team. Nebraska is a good team and also probably top 20 to 30. I think Illinois would be favored at home and should have been the underdog going into Lincoln. I'd guess Illinois and Nebraska are both 7-9 win teams. Let's enjoy the rest of the season and go bowling.
I was there in '94-'97 and we are not anywhere near those teams. Haven't really been anything since. 0-8 in past OT games, haven't scored a point in 8, have -20 yards in those games, 4 INT's zero first downs. Says a lot. Add the 0-27 and we just aren't close. I hope we can win 6 to go bowling. I'm not holding my breath.

I really wouldn't count the record at Temple against the 2-20 ranked matchup. Temple and other group of 5 schools rarely defeat ranked opponents.
Special teams were awful, D was awful, penalties are out of control (4th game in a row), offense can’t score more than 7 in the 2nd half…
That said, we were still in a position to get the W at the end of regulation (wide open receiver in the end zone and missed FG)… bu still can’t finish.
Poor officiating went both ways, but the no calls in OT on the 3rd & 42 were unbelievable (targeting and late hit both completely ignored by the officials would have given us hope with a 1st down inside the 20).
Bottom line we need to put this one behind us and.focus on Purdue…

Defense did not play well and untimely undisciplined penalties really hurt us.
Well the 2 and 20 mark against ranked teams, when he is coaching dumpster fire programs back to life (Temple, Baylor and post Riley/Frost Nebraska) should not be surprising. He never stuck around long enough to go against many good teams when his team was good. And Oborne suffered under the "Can't win the big game" label most of his career.

Overrated? Listen chicken little, the sky isn't falling. Nobody but maybe the UA-cam "experts" were saying Nebraska was going to win 9 or 10 games this year. We're barely in season 2 of a rebuild. We have a true freshman quarterback. Both starting corners are injured now. We are down to a third string left tackle. We got beat by an undefeated ranked B1G team. I would rather lose a close game like this than get beat by an FCS team at home like Notre Dame did this year, or us in previous seasons. Take a breath. We're a lot better than last year and we'll be even better next year. Relax Nervous Nancy.

Sounds familiar, he can’t win the big one. That’s what they said about Osborne. Just how did that turn out. We lost because their offense and defense was better than ours.
Still the same O-line. Average at best. Aside from the two forced fumble plays, the defense was poor all around. No tackles for loss or sacks by the D-line.
I think as a national rank we are somewhere between 35 and 40. I would have guessed 9-3 before this game but now I'm saying 7-5 is where we will be at. The worst thing those 4 and 5 star athletes considering us will probably go elsewhere. Special teams were abysmal, Buschini cannot kick the ball anywhere he wants the long kick to the wrong side of the field killed us with a huge return.
5-7 season incoming possibly 4-8. Every team on the remaining schedule looks better than Neb besides Purdue, and thats 50/50. I would suggest no one get their hopes up for a bowl or your soul is going to be crushed🤣

Undisciplined football gets you beat in games like that. They have to learn to win close games even though this team seems to be better than past years winning close games is a culture and at the moment Nebraska doesn’t have that. They will get there but it’s tough to win big 10 games when you commit dumb penalties and play undisciplined football.
The o line just doesn’t have the talent right now. These new lineman we’ve been getting should be pretty good in a year or two
