Yeah, well...we've been saying "this loss should make them better" since Nebraska lost to teams that weren't very good under Riley and Frost. When do we as fans come to the realization that this rebuild for Rhule is gonna take a lot longer than we thought? -- on a positive note, at least we didn't score 50 and lose by 20. 😏

@@ncaaplayoff6714 yeah but it's year 2 with a total 14 or 15 games played under the regime. Losing to a cow like beillma is insufferable. But it's pretty short-sited to decide it's all for nothing. If you think Reilly or Frost are in the same league of coaching, I think you're very wrong.

Whether I want to admit it or not, I believe you're right. It was a bit of a gut punch for the fans but more of a slap in the face to the players and coaches. Sometimes when a team as a whole start believing all the hype without a true test, they intend to get sloppy. Hopefully this is the wakeup call our Huskers needed to better themselves personally and professionally, on and off the field.

Everyone just needs to take a deep breath and just enjoy the fact that we have a qb that can get us down the field this year. I think alot of people forgot about last year and God bless this fan base, I know they are tired of waiting patiently but, we are making as good of progress as we should with a freshman qb! One thing to remember is that all the coaches have a seasons worth of tape on Tony White’s defense. They are scheming for it better. Illinois had the perfect scheme to constantly put the defense out of position. The penalties are an issue. I’m not talking about the PI calls…those are subjective to the officiating crew on how they choose to call those. I’m talking about the personal fouls. Too many of those. Those are 100% preventable.

When I was a kid, we used to joke that he had to eat his cereal on a plate because he used to lose the bowls. Our turnovers are much better this year. We have got to get the O-line figured out. Thought you might like another perspective on Hohl's missed field goal, the designated turning point in the game (Huskers vs Iliini), from the view point of physics!
Sort of an unusual way to look at this, but maybe worth the thought. I watched this attempt in slow motion several times and noticed several things. The snap was a little off, and the ball placement became suspect as a result. We must look at Einstein's general theory here. When an object is moving, spinning in this case, angular momentum comes into play. Angular momentum is 'acceleration' which is gravity. Just like the earth orbits out star, and is spinning and falling toward the sun simultaneously, it stays in a designated orbit. This is good for planets ( so we don't fly off into space), but NOT for footballs. Kicking a field goal requires that the ball be 'motionless', (laces out) so the contact with the foot of the kicker can apply momentum on the tangent directly outward. The opposite of spinning planets.
In this case, the holder (Bushini?) was still turning the ball to laces out when John Hohl's foot made contact. Result...angular acceleration (gravity) was applied, even a small amount, and created enough momentum from the kick to take a curved path over the distance squared...about 39 yards. Just enough gravity to pull the ball left and miss the direct tangent target straight line. In other words, bad for footballs, but OK for planets in an orbit.
So the fault here was timing as the football was still turning. That goes to the long snapper and place holder here, not Hohl.
This is something that can be corrected by practice and study of physics.
    What do you think?

My takes on Nebraska thus far: 1- Our run D got exposed vs UNI and Illinois continued it.
2- Ceyair Wright is a good CB. 3- Dylan is good, the one constant in all the games has been short crossing routes, he throws behind the receivers. Looks like he’s relying on his arm only, not stepping into throws. I know sometimes he can’t due to pressure.
4- Special Teams 5- the 2nd halves have been consistently bad or at least worse in each game. I know against UTEP that lots of players played.
Finally- we have a good team. I believe in what Rhule is doing. I think we go 8-4 or 9-3. It’s good to be a Husker fan.
I laugh at people crapping on this team. Look where we’ve been the last decade. I want excellence too, but I’m a realist, it’ll take time. GBR!!!

The coaches in the B1G have last year's games to look at as they prep for Tony White's defense. Obviously they have adjusted on how to attack the Husker D. Will see if Husker make adjustments on defense.

2 things I've noticed about the defense that are different than last year. 1) We are letting teams sustain drives and move the ball with very few 3 and outs. 2) Our tackling is significantly worse, most noticeably ball carriers are falling forward for at least an extra yard or 2 every play. I noticed both of these last week vs. NIU but the talent gap made up for both of them in that game, not so much against an opponent that was closer to equal talent. The extra couple yards every play seems to be contributing to those sustained drives and not being able to get off of the field in regulation definitely showed in OT, defense looked like they were gassed out from the start. Hopefully Rhule and White can get things fixed very soon. GBR!

Happy to come to the comment section and see a lot of Husker fans showing patience after this loss and trust in the process. Before that, I saw a few people calling for firing the coaching staff and stating Raiola is overrated. Those Husker fans are the problem. We got a coach doing a good job. We got a 5-star qb that is doing great. And we have genuine interest from 4&5 star recruits. If Husker fans start blasting Raiola and Rhule every week just because we're not perfect, then we may lose all these good things that we have going for us. Don't be the problem Husker fans. This may be the last real opportunity that the Huskers have to turn this ship around. It don't happen over night.

After this past Saturday, my concern is what I thought was a strong factor on this team. Line dominance on both sides of the ball. Yes, Illinois seems to be a much better team than the three previous opponents but as I’ve said all season so far, it remains to be seen just how good or bad each team is. I saw a lack of spark on both sides of the ball enough that it made a difference in the outcome. Very few flashes of dominance compared to the first three games. We can still make a lot of noise this season but the margin of error just shrunk on Saturday.

I expected 9-3 as the ceiling and 7-5 as the floor. Right now I'm thinking 8-4. We have better than average coaches. Better than average defense...I think, and an elite top 5 quarterback. This kid is a TRUE freshman with a LOT of upside to his already impressive play. We're in a good place right now. Trust the process and enjoy the ride. GBR!!!

It isn't the leftovers I've been waiting to see. It's the new guys that Rhule is recruiting and developing. The next offensive line. The next defensive line. Rhule freely admits that he wins because he gets good quarterbacks. Check that box 3 times. Haarburg is looking better, like a quarterback.
Defense needs a little inspiration and a bit more of the 5-6 man rushes to put the pressure back on. Can we get pressure with 4 isn't a good question as the quarterbacks are throwing quicker. And if they'd just tackle the carrier instead of the ball, they'd dominate again. Take opportunities to get the ball out, not every play.

It's just the way Nebraska fans react to the times when we struggle when we overreact by criticizing every aspect of the team. To me, it looks like the huskers were really determined to be Colorado this year and since that game, they have not played the same have shown that they can play extremely well and dominate both sides of the ball. They need to figure out how they can get this motivation back that they had against Colorado.

  • @ChristopherBown

I think that Illinois had a GREAT game plan coming in. They showed the BIG how to beat Nebraska, stuff the run and make Dylan beat you. He didn't get it done, was 1 pass away from it. I think the coaches need to get him prepared for that being the case the rest of the year. I think he can step up and make those plays but the WR and RB's need to step up and help him out.
The D need to look themselves in the mirror and figure out how they are going to play the rest of the season.
Special teams...... Needs a hard, hard look. Bill Busch might be the answer as you said.
Nebraska fans need to chill out. Yeah, that loss sucked, we thought we were better and that maybe those days were over. The quality of football is getting better, the talent is getting better. It is just going to take time.
    GBR

Kicking game is the biggest worry for me, I’m happy our trenches are getting exposed so we know what to work on because defending the rush will be hands down a VERY important key vs Rutgers/Iowa which will make a difference in either being 5-7, 6-6, or 7-5. If we can defend the rush well a majority of the rest of the season I think we can be 7-5 or 8-4. Yes we should beat Purdue. I’m suspecting a 34-21 W. GBR!!

  • @horsepuckery

The thought that NU needed a wake up call at 3-0 is puzzling. IL scored a TD in OT before our D even knew OT started. Then our O does what it always does when faced with adversity late in a game. They folded like a cheap card house. The OL apparently had no idea OT started as well since they were on DR before he had time to find the laces. NU DB's wanted nothing to do with contact the entire 4th qtr. This was among if not THE most pathetic collapse for our long streak of close game ending losses. Our D basically quit after the 21 play drive in which they insisted IL walk off with points. I propose Rhule shut up and stop doing press conferences until NU beats a team with a heart beat. And for all the 8-4, 9-3 prognosticators, I suggest you hold your breath on that. 6-6 is likely and perhaps 7-5 at best.
This team was just exposed for their weaknesses and lack of heart. For all the talk of being the most physical team on the field, NU for 1.5 games has not been physical. Our D is supposed to lead this team with all the returning talent. They've been exposed, and we were laughably outcoached. One game at a time and leave out all the "we back" BS talk. IL has less skill talent and far more heart and physicality. THE B1G is a big boys league where toughness and heart are the minimal requirements. NU once again is lacking. The easiest first 7 games we could imagine and most of them at home. NU comes out no better than 5-2 and perhaps 4-3 if they don't get much more physical before they get run off the field by OSU and USC.

    1. Biggest concern, strangely, is the defense. I knew ST would be a struggle. I was expecting the defense to be better than last year, but they are not better. And that's concerning, given how many seniors are on that side of the ball. 2. Biggest positive is clearly Raiola, no question. 3. I don't like predicting games for my teams. Seems like bad luck.

We would not have this conversation if we made the field goal, catch in the end zone by tight end, or more aggressive on the catch in the end zone that ILL took away. I agree...it is a wake up call. Defense has degraded on runs and secondary. Offense is much improvement, but still need Offense line to open holes for running backs. My biggest concern is Special team. It is slowly improving, but it needs to happen sooner.

Dante Dowdell 51 - touches - 256 total yards - 5 yard avg per touch. Rahmir Johnson 42 touches - 196 yards - 4.7 total yards per touch. Emmett Johnson never touched the ball on Friday.

I actually thought Illinois was a better coached team. I really thought this game was a 50/50 game and hoped that home field would give us the edge we needed to win. No disrespect to our team, but Illinois was disciplined and physical. We got pushed around at the line of scrimmage... that should not be happening in my opinion. Conditioning maybe? Special teams has to get better. And what happened to our defense? I feel like we also were out coached in the game as well. Penalties need to be clean up. The officials are not our friends but we can't keep hurting ourselves with dumb penalties. I didn't believe all the hype coming from the media and coaches... just words. The play I saw on the field against Northern Iowa made me realize we still have a lot of work to do, and I'm sure Matt and his staff will get it done. Now, for the good stuff... we're a good team, not a great team... but we will win games this year. We win at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. We need to get conditioning improved and keep our studs on the field. We have to run the ball and take pressure off our true freshman QB. He is going to make mistakes and he will learn from them and get better. The upside to Dylan is phenomenal. Defense has to step it up and get stops on 3rd down... and they need to get back to flying to the ball like last year. We played two teams the last two weeks that were physical at the line and we didn't fare well... but we have the studs to do it. Offensive line needs to get mean and take it personal. The receivers are doing a great job of making our young QB look good. They are making adjustment to under and over thrown passing and making great catches. We have the offense this year to put points on the board... so, if we can get our defense back performing at last years level... we should be at least 7-5. And lastly, the coaches need to step it up. Real-time adjustments during the game seem a little slow. Now I'm just a dude sitting on my couching watching the game but I see other teams make adjustments and feel like we can do better.

What's your opinions on the 3-3-5 defense and is it a sustainable defense to use in the Big Ten or do the Blackshirts need to go back to the traditional 4-3 defense and get four guys to rush the passer instead of three. Would that make the defensive line harder to block with having both Robinson and Hutmacher at the DT spots and Butler and Sherman at the DE spots?

I'm certainly no expert nor do I have "inside" information, but what seemed to happen is that the program has been praised by national media over the last couple of weeks especially. Fr9m ESPN to a variety of UA-cam channels, all I've heard is how great the program is playing; how great Dylan has been; defensive line getting high praise; the program will be 7-0 heading to Columbus; etc. I could tell within the first five (5) minutes of the game that the intensity level, on both sides of the ball, was not where I expected it to be. I suspect that the team played Friday night thinking that they could not lose. If I can be perfectly candid, I did not think that they would lose a Friday night home game before a national audience. Again, within the first five (5) minutes, however, I was yelling at the TV....my wife HATES IT when Nebraska does not play well because I act like a 12 year old! Classic case of "letting one get away."
