BMW 840ci V 650i - OPEN V LSD DIFF

- Well, it's more complicated than just pitting one car against another - this video explains how ASC+T, DSC and DTC help the car around corners - but can it match a Limited Slip Differential as fitted to my 840ci? Also, I'm in the unusual position of having driven my 840ci WITH and WITHOUT a limited slip differential - so I can tell you what difference it makes.
So, today I will be pitting the BMW 650i with 365 horsepower and an open differential against my ancient 840ci with 286 horsepower and a limited-slip differential on a series of bendy roads. Will the extra horsepower beat the extra traction? We will find out!
Just in case you ask, the 3.15 ratio limited slip differential is from a 1992 BMW 750i E32 - Авто та транспорт
watched it again because it's so well done! Keep up your great work pal!
Thanks again!
Timm, very interesting comparison in the “twisties”. I live in an area where we can get icy/snowy roads 5 months of the year. I avoid driving my 650 in those conditions, but have gotten caught out a couple of times. The 650 did fine as long as I was gentle with the throttle 😀. I’m fortunate to also drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee with an LSD, and a half-dozen traction control modes. Makes driving on snow and ice much less sporty.
I agree with keeping the ASC/DSC on. Too dangerous especially with some spirited driving. However, if desired I would recommend pressing the traction control button only once which will allow a bit more slip while still providing some slip.
Always informative and a great video! 🙏
Glad you think so!
Cheers mate.great content. Very valuable stuff especially the fixes.and money saving tips.
Thanks Steven!
Gotta love both colors of the cars.
Thanks!
Your videos are superb, Timm. So informative in a totally straightforward way. Excellent work. Thanks to you, I'm going to put an LSD on my E38. I'm planning to get a remap done too; I take it you would advise me to get the diff done before the remap?
By the way, how many Beemers do you have?
Awesome, thank you!
Thank for all that info .. I’be watched it twice and just about understood. Really enjoying my 07’ 650 & was concerned about a few thing which your channel has put my mind at ease (a little) !!
Oh and I’d advise a Kevlar jacket .. sound like your neighbourhood is a little trigger happy 😆
Thanks Alz, don't worry I live right next to a firing range - but they are pointing the other way!
BMW cabrio , future classic…
You are great.
Thanks ZZ!
I was just thinking to myself... were is my fix of Tim and his great content... TAADAA!
Thanks!
Hi Timm. Great info.
So took the plunge and got a 650i (following your guide).
Could you please do a video or give advice on how to renew (in priority order):
1. Coolant.
2. Brake fluid (is it better for a shop to do it?).
3. Diff fluid.
Thanks JP, and good move! This video was meant to be all about changing the differential fluid and grew into what it is - I've still got that part to put out. If you have less than 100,000 miles then don't worry about the diff - some of them don't even have drain plugs. Get a shop to do the brake fluid. For the coolant you only need to change a couple of Litres or so - there is a drain cock at the bottom of the radiator (red plastic), drain as much as you can and replace with 50/50 mix of blue BMW coolant and distilled water.
There is no comparison between an open diff and LSD.
I love my positraction in my Chevy Blazer 😂
Perfect
Thanks Ali!
Hi Timm this is Alvin your number one fan. At what mileage do you do your oil change?
Thank you and stay safe.
Alvin! Great to hear from you! Every year or 10,000 miles whichever is the sooner - in my case that's every year!
Ironically the 850i and the 650i both share a similar approach to DSC+t with the drive by wire system. This would probably be a better comparison in this case
Always love your videos. Do you watch M539 channel
Thanks Gareth, yes, and I know him from the Forums!
Is there an aftermarket LSD available for the 650i? I've been a Mercedes buyer for the last 20 years but I'm actually considering a 650i due to your videos alleviating my concerns over 650i repair issues that I can do in my own garage.
Quaife will probably make one - but it will be pretty expensive: www.quaife.co.uk/quaife-products/atb-limited-slip-differential/
Tim great video as always! I have an 91 850i , outside of a lsd, whats the best way to improve acceleration?
get yourself a set of wokke performance eeproms
Wokke does a set of chip-tunes for the 850i, I have heard good things about them!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation Great guy, this Wokke, lives around here, he was able to get me a set of E24 BBS wheelcovers within a day to save my wedding car from looking terrible! :D Super nice guy, very helpful!
Hey Tim I disable the DTC on my 2008 650i but I’m still not able to Do a burn out ? Do you know why do I need a tune ?
The gearing and tyre width stop burnouts, not a good plan on a GT, the differential usually fails first!
Tim Yes we did ask.. :) But that must be a rare car .. heheh Just in case you ask, the E31 differential is from a 1992 BMW *750i E31*
Thanks Carl - all sorted!
you can just hear the difference in road noise between the two
Disabling the DSC on my 2007 750li... hooning it trying to burn donuts and the rear diff came apart internally after a minute. good thing wreckers' parts for these are very inexpensive. can't do that anymore.
The GT isn't made for doing doughnuts, the tyres are too wide and the gearing too low!
Much quieter in the e31.
Tried with ASC/T off, pretty scary stuff happen 😉
Make sure you are in an open space
Thanks Pavlos, yes the E31 is quieter, especially when using a lapel mike!
Hi Timm. Would be interesting to know how much quieter a E31 coupe is compared to a E64 at highways speed, in dBs. Sounds like a future video. :)@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
Yeah but the asc+t/dsc does leave you stranded on an icy patch. I do wish the 540 had an LSD.
That's true enough Onkel!
is there any way to put lsd to 650?
Only very expensively with a custom diff from Racing Diffs I'm afraid!
I have just bought a Gripper plated LSD for my manual 550i. Speak to to Dave at Heaseman Differentials.
Slowed by an inferior vehicle. :)
Always getting in the way Noan!
