One of the best mods I’ve done on my e39 540 was installing a wavetrac differential. I stayed with the stock 2.93 ratio but they offer lower gearing as well. Someone I know (wink wink) hit 172mph. The grip and predictably are amazing. Highly recommend

really good explanation thank you ! I have an M62TUB44 in my Range Rover Vogue, its diff ratio is 3.73, so I downloaded the Gear Ratio app ( very nice app by the way) and selected Diff Ratio 3.64 ( it was the closest I could find to 3.73 ) and was pretty shocked to see how good the results were
    1st 39.5 mph
    2nd 62.6 mph
    3rd 91 mph
    4th 140 mph
    5th 177 mph
NB all the above at 5500 rpm
I know its not exact ( the difference between 3.64 and 3.73 is a few % out) , and the kerb weight of the 740i is 1800kg and the RR is 2435kg ( which is 26% more) , but it seems BMW did a god job ( at the time when they owned RR ) on the diff ratio to use on my RR Vogue, not that I get anything like 90mph out of third, but must do some more testing
once again thank you for such clear and informative info on your channel, all the best ( a friend of mine has the 850i V12 and I have pinged him your youtube video about the air flow being so good stock on the V8 and V12 )

Timm, in normal use does the steptronic change up a gear at the same engine speed, or at the same road speed?
Seriously thinking of changing the diff in my 540iT, as the gearing is far too high. 2,000 rpm @ 70mph is ridiculous, and I doubt the fuel consumption is much different in relaxed real world driving.

Thank you very much for your informative and technical explanations. It really makes an impact when making a decision. I do have a question: I have 2001 740i M sport with the original M62TUB44 engine. I might need a new engine and thought why not swap with the 4.6 V8 (the M62B46), I know its the same engine block so it would very much bolt right in, I know it uses the same DME (Me 7.2) and I need to flash it with the 4.6 program this way it can still communicate with EWS, I know i need to change the oil pan. My questions are: sis this swap doable? If yes, do I need to change the transmission/swap the torque converter, or my transmission will work well? Are there anything else I need to worry about it/change in the swap?

This is partly why 0-60 times are poor on some BMWs. My E30 318iS has a 4.10:1 diff which is ideal (seems a big number because 4th is 1:1, 5th overdrive 0.81:1 on most older BMWs). But it means I have to change into 3rd before I run out of revs at 55mph. It's also why my Z4 2.5 isn't much slower than a 3.0 in the real world.
