Hi Joel, small tip remember to lube that o ring when you fit it on your oil filter it helps it seat better when you re assemble and when you use that wrench to tighten back hold the wrench by the ratchet and hand tighten, not finger tighten and don’t tighten by holding the end of the ratchet because it is easy to break the o ring. I bought a Z4 because of you and it gives me many hours of pleasure, so thank you. I just want to share the knowledge. I enjoy watching your knowledge of cars grow over the years since you started. I really liked your buying trip with your dad. You had so many good points to share with him, all learned from the countless purchases you have made. Naturally there are many other ways to do things, including a proper torque wrench. I just want to help you be fail safe like you did with your dad.

You will get a much better oil change result by warming the car up and then draining oil via the sump plug.
That way you remove the sediment from the oil pan.

Hi Joel. Another interesting video. I also use the vacuum extractor for the engine, transmission, transfer case and p/steering. The 2011 RRS has a dedicated extractor tube to attach the vacuum hose, like some other models. Afterwards, I removed the drain plug to see how much was left in the sump and it was about an egg cup full. No swarf on the magnet or in the oil but was as black as!
I replaced the transmission pan and filter with a steel service kit, rather than a 'full' so called flush and used the ZF6 fluid. I also dropped the mechatronic valve block to replace all the seals. I'm glad I did. The bridge seal fell apart when I lowered the block and the tubes had shrunk. I saved my self big dollars doing it myself. Well must be off. Have fun and look after yourself and Katie. Cheers, Chris. OZ. 🙃

Typical England, nobody keeps a car in their garage and it is always full of toot. New builds also advertise "a garage", when in reality a modern car won't fit!
Anything DIY on a car is daunting and easy to keep putting off, however it is very satisfying when you complete it. Well done for attempting and I can see you servicing/repairing other cars now. If the car does not have one I like to buy a magnetic sump plug. Next service you can see if there are any metal filings, which would need investigating/ early warning?

Only thing I’d recommend next time is use your fingertip to apply a film of oil on the rubber o-ring of the oil filter and fuel filter. This will make it easier to remove them on the next service. Also don’t tighten the oil filter with a tool, as hard has you can hand tight will be enough. The reason for the above is where the engine will warm and cool through being used everything will naturally tighten anyway.
With regards to the fuel economy, the new fuel filter will be letting more fuel flow through by nature of being new and not partially blocked up with old fuel. Yes the fuel economy may be slightly down but in theory engine power should be up. If you are still in doubt remove the fuel filter again and make sure it is fitted in the correct way around, on a lot of fuel filters they have metal tabs showing they can only be fitted one way.

Bit of advice. Use a pick next time you take a rubber o-ring off. Will do less potential damage than a screwdriver. And maybe take the sump off on your next service, clean the crusty deposits and the oil pick up pipe. Will prolong the life of your turbo/ engine by preventing oil starvation 😊👍

The only thing I would suggest is to drain the oil properly as this will remove all the crap at the bottom of the sump. Sucking the stuff out is just a waste of time and money and was encouraged by the manufacturers as a way of getting more money out of customers by taking cars to dealers every year instead of every two years. The dealers will in fact drain and not suck the oil every other service interval ie two years on the A service. Best practice to maintain the life of the engine and its components is to drain it every year. 👍🏻😎

I think I will contact my local dealer to ask if they alternate draining from the sump on every other oil change. I was under the impression that they always did the suction transfer method. Seems to me that the filter should be catching the crap and not give it a chance to settle at the bottom of the pan. I think you do want to let the engine run for a little bit and drain or suck the oil out while it is warm.

Do you know if the gearbox fluid has ever been changed before? If it hasn’t, any concerns about changing the fluid on a vehicle with 130k miles on it? I’ve heard the slipperiness of the new fluid can cause issues….
I make it a part of my service to clean the MAF sensors whenever I change the air filter.
And finally, how do you dispose of the old oil? Can you take that container to a recycling center and drain it somewhere?

  • @TheMidnightrider67
    @TheMidnightrider67 2 роки тому

Hi found your video interesting.....its often easy for us professional mechanic.s to forgot we all had to start somewhere...just few we points ...diesel engine... the fresh oil will go black almost instantly...and fresh oil will not make engine run better...even no its probably most important thing you can do ..to any engine...its also worth running a oil flush in engine let it tickover for 15mins that will breakdown any crude thats inside engine also if your got a sump plug always drain oil from sump you will never ever get all the old oil out with that pump..you probably left around 1/2 litre of old oil inside sump ...and always refill with dip stick removed... new fuel filter will definitely allow engine to run better but will not increase economy because its electric fuel pump and injection system controlled by ecu so engine will always take correct amount of diesel unless filters blocked and its restricted the fuel flow ..(engine will run shit and be underpowered) same as new air filter...lastly I'll say this you will not catch any dealer's or good independent workshop's use Granville oil...its a budget oil hence reason its so cheap ..yes it mite match correct spec but that's about all it can do other brands match or exceed correct spec...it used to be cleaned recycled oil few year's ago but I believe its no made in India..

Personally myself I wouldn’t use that oil extractor as it never gets all the oil out and it’s messy then draining it from the sump bolt. Also another tip on Diesel engines when filling with oil never fill it to the max. Fill it so it’s between half and full as oil on diesels expands a lot and can actually fail MOT emissions test

The worst way to change the oil in the 3.6. It has 2 sump plugs for a reason- by not completely draining the sump which has 2 levels, you are leaving a small reserve of crudy oil right next to the turbo oil feed. This means the turbo will eventually suffer from oil starvation as it becomes blocked with this shit , will go bang and you'll be wetting yourself when you see how much it costs to replace turbo on this vehicle.

@@itsjoel as Ollie says above it’s a good seal, also means it will tighten up and not grab and tear, had that happen when I first started working😖 It also makes future maintenance a lot easier as the o-rings won’t get tight. With the oil filter being situated on the top it’s prone to a lot more heat so it also helps the rubber just live a bit longer.
It’s a real nit picky thing but it’s good practice to do, tend to grease all oil filter o rings and diesel filter o rings.
A good saying to live by is if it moves or needs to move, grease it. If not paint it.

I wouldn't expect better mpg unless your fuel filter was really clogged, and if it was you'd probably have other symptoms. Doubt you've done anything wrong :)

Don't suck out the oil, it leaves all the rubbish at the bottom of the sump. I'd also take your watch off.

When working on a car, even if the engine is running, always have a window open just in case the car decides to lock itself with the keys inside

Next time, drain hot engine oil from the sump to allow particulates and sludge to drain out, and replace with a new washer.

just changed the oil on my peugot 508 using an electric pump from amazon, you just push the pipe down the dip stick hole and job done.saves loads of time and not getting messy.
