How much will it cost to fix-up the cheapest V12 in the country?

- I picked up my V12 BMW 760Li a few weeks ago now for just £5,000, making it one of/if not the cheapest V12 in the country at the time. It's not in perfect condition however, and so I've taken it to my local BMW specialist RBM Hampshire to find out just how much it will cost to fix-up! Hopefully not more than it's worth...

As a former keeper of this car for 4 years I am very happy to see this. It tallies with my ownership experience, it never really cost me much to maintain either (FAR less than the RR Vogue I had before it), but having said that, whenever I got a fault code or my mechanic (Atrincham Autotechnic) recommended something, I made sure I attended to it without a thought for the cost, and that's the only way you should approach ownership of a car like this. The coolant loss issue was something I had looked into more than once (full temp pressure tested and rad changed, still couldn't diagnose it) so I just learned to live with topping it up every 2-3 weeks. I always made sure the fluids were regularly changed. The engine was bulletproof for me. Good luck and very interested to see your future vids Joel, do look after her!
I also had the engine carbon cleaned but it made no difference to performance whatsoever, total waste of £300!
@@zhzhhhzhzhzzzz yea they usually are a waste of money.
probably a very thirsty beast though. My C63 AMG was gining me 10-14mpg
@@b.h.6307 averaging about 16 in this
@@b.h.6307 correct, I averaged 15mpg in that thing
That’s really reasonable. I was expecting double that. Once you’ve had those injectors replaced it will be like a new car. I’ve replaced so many petrol and diesel injectors on BMWs and the difference is night and day. Great car but I’d still rather Margot Robbie.
Love that feeling when a mechanic tells you you've got a good example when you paid a good price. Great video Joel!
She seems like a keeper mate!
Don't say that about any 760i.... Ever..
@@danielfl.9347 so you Never owned one
A mechanic that says ‘fingers crossed there’s not much wrong’???....that’s a rarity 😂
That means hes not trying to deceive you
The guys at RBM seem genuinely great
I have an E65 3.0 Diesel on an 08 plate. One former keeper from new (University limo car) and I too had it on the ramps once bought. Needed several injectors and made sure she had a major service.
Don't believe the naysayers Joel, this is a 2nd hand car like any other and things go wrong. Fixes do not have to be expensive.
I bought a used PDC sensor for the rear from eBay and it was £2.49 delivered. Removed the previous colour and re-sprayed and it works perfect.
Replaced the laser on the DVD player for £9 from China.
You are also right about getting behind the wheel of this big car is a joy.
Hoping she gives you many miles of smiles.
Thank you!
Joel - “I may have found a little peach” “BUT it’s losing quite a lot of coolant and a bit of a misfire 😂😂🤣
haha. famous last words
@@itsjoel I had a coolant leak on mine. Somebody tried to convince me it was waterpump. I was actually an 'O' ring. 20p for parts and a few quid to fit. !!!!.
Worth looking at.
The misfire could be caused by corrosion in an electrical box situated undet bonnet nearside below cabin filter. Water gets in here and ruins it, causing misfires. It can be felt on downshift from second to first. You may think the gearbox is faulty. It probably won't be. Change the little black box. £100 for the part.
PS The water gets caught under that box because engine compartment drain holes get blocked with dirt etc. MUST FLOW PROPERLY
Sounds like a good buy and not a bad price to fix. I got quoted £450 for BMW to change 2 x colour coded parking sensors. Got a couple of black ones for 20 quid and took 45 mins to put on. They are still working 5 years later
most probably the issue with the misfire is not in the injectors, but oil leaking in the ignition coils from the valve cover gasket and not allowing them to produce proper spark.
You also need a rear towing eye cover! 😀
That's really bugging me. A very easy fix.
@@BenB91 You would hope. Depends whether it comes painted from BMW, if so its easy but expensive. If not then its cheaper but not easy
@@maxbradley9534 unlikely it will come painted. Easy to prime and paint a small area yourself.
@@BenB91 Sure yes its easy to paint it given you have the paint. But I've found with BMWs getting paint in the correct colour is not easy when you're just a guy looking for a rattle can. And you can't do a shit job else it'll look worse than just not having the cap
@@maxbradley9534 just need the paint code. Plenty of companies will make the paint and post it to you.
Guess I'm buying a V12 then 😂
Do it!
owned for an year, the bank credit calls remind me of it)
@@itsjoel Ruinous advice haha!
The idea of fitting three fuel injectors without doing further testing is laughable.
At a very minimum you would want to change the three coil packs on the bad cylinders with three on the good. Clear the fault codes and see if the misfires stay on the same cylinders or move. Even if they stayed on the same cylinders you would then want to change the three spark plugs for new just to eliminate them. While I had the plugs out of the three cylinders I would also conduct a compression test on the cylinders.to give an idea of the engine health.. It would also seem strange you have three misfires on the same bank of cylinders.
I would be checking wiring damage, or poor earth for the coil packs or vacuum leak.
You need to do more testing before going to the parts bin and throwing injectors at it.
I work on a lot of BMW's and rarely fit injectors.
After reading a comment by the previous owner I would be concerned by it using coolant with no apparent leak connected to a misfire on three cylinders on the same bank. Do you have a blown head gasket on that bank. I would be conducting a co sniffer test of the coolant.
Thanks for your comment, you have to remember that lots of the video and inspection gets edited out - fuel injectors were on the quote as it was sort of the “worst case” out of the obvious items. Will test sparks & coils etc before actually fitting fuel injectors lol!
Coolant we spoke about the possibility of it being gasket related - just starting with the very cheapest thing which is the cap.
chris jones it's not a good price if the car still has a blown head gasket after you spend £1500 on fitting unnecessary parts.
According to Samcrac, if it is the head gasket, you need to replace the whole engine with one taken from a Mini Countryman.
@@itsjoel had the cap issue on my e46, if they pop open a few times(overfilled coolant or expansion tank fault) they break. New tank and cap was good as new hope it solves your issue 🙏
I love seeing E66 content. I hope this one sticks around!
That's a good result there. 6.5k for a sorted motor. That's a lot of car for that money. Nice 👍👍
Great to see some new upcoming youtubers
This was a dope video! Your 760 Li is a such an elegenant monster! Keep up the great work man!
Thanks so much buddy
Genuinely couldn't be more happy for you mate. Potential winner. When I saw what you had bought and you said coolant leak, I was thinking of deep deep debt, but fingers crossed. Hope it doesn't turn out to be mega expensive leak. Obviously it has been well cared for!
Fingers crossed!
Nice to see a honest garage not ripping people off.
Brake Hoses are not the only thing that can perish. Do you remember when the inner lining from Alan Partridge's 1980's jogging shorts perished?
Your 760 is such a beast!! I’ve owned my E63 630i sport 3 years now, and take it to be serviced etc..to BMspecialist near Stevenage.. really good mechanic, & cool guy who knows his BMs. I have been toying with the idea of getting an E63/4 V8 650i.. but the guy said not to as mine is a really good example, and the V8 can be a oil leaky money pit. Anyway, my point is.. it’s nice to hear when a BMW mechanic say ‘you’ve got a good one’ 😄
That’s not a bad result with yours..considering what COULD have been a long list 👍🏼
u missed the supposed leak in the rear footwell mate!
That's probably the coolant leak
@@dennisphoenix1 coolant leak in the back of the car 😐
@@umarkayani9203 yeah that's what I meant, my taxi has a rear heater and it was leaking and soaking the carpets 🙄

@Hans Wangsness yeah I had that on mine too 🙄
That's got to be worth having the other side rear arm changing at the same time and the front Flexi brake lines changed at the same time.
And if your feeling flush, the spark plugs.
Yeah might be a good shout
Might just be better to get braided lines all round, especially if you plan on keeping it long term.
Well done sir!…bravery rewarded!
In belgium you would pay 10000€ registration tax and 3000€ yearly road tax for this occasion
Hi joel
Another great video and glad to see the beast hasnot cost too much to get through check up.
Keep up the good work and roll on better weather so we can get some new vids to watch
Great purchase Joel, well done... and beautiful car, what a brilliant purchase, you are going to have some fun miles in this motor.
Let’s hope so!
I have seen you today evening running straight pipe Beemer around the a316, on the roundabout below :) sounds really good!
What a fantastic buy Joel. Such a small (ish) quote. Please keep this car. Lotto win for me would be the M760 Li. 2 yrs old, 60K/70K!!!
Been waiting for this for weeks!!
Waitting whats coming next with this one!
Wait I’ve just realised it’s JayEmm’s old car 😂😂😂
Great to see, 760 lives on
Excellent vid man looks like you have a good one and dig that you want to get all the bits sorted out and have the car 100% 👍👍keep up the great work man
Thanks for watching buddy
The underchassis looks surprisingly clean for a UK car of that age
So much car for the money. Absolute beaut
Missfire might be because of the leaky rocker cover gasket, it goes around spark plug and injector holes, and, when leaking, floods them with oil. So do that first before buying exspensive injectors, it might save you 1/2 of your quote
Don't pay for new injectors when you can have them cleaned on an ultrasound stand and they will work like new
Or use fuel additives to keep them clean
These injectors unfortunately don’t respond well to being cleaned, you just have to bite the bullet and replace them.
@@olisharp6801 I think that is debatable. They are not any special kind of injectors, and it is common practice where I'm from (bad fuel is common) to clean them using ultrasound
@@michaelg492 pretty sure this engine uses the Siemens VDO Piezo direct injectors, rather than the Bosch injectors
How can you charge for injectors (3) without testing..? Just because ASOL states the DME has found these 3 faults only points to that area.
Just because the injectors are on the same bank it doesn’t mean all 3 injectors have faults, they may well be on the same bank which more than likely a loom fault (hot/cold/hot) causing wiring break/corrosion as the firing order isn’t sequential like a 6 Cyl, it’s 1.7.5.11.3.9.6.12.2.8.4.10 in this V12, which indicates loom fault not injector.
This also goes with the PDC, try cleaning the sensor first before ripping the bumper off the vehicle to get to the sensor.
Besides, would you trust a guy wearing skinny pants and sneakers...????
I’m glad you’ve bought a great car! Those guys look like great mechanics
Love these cars hopefully one day
Hope this will clarify for some people that this gen of 7er is actually really good and very unappreciated
hmm What is model or 7 series that is overrated?
You should look into retrofitting a leisure battery so that you can use stuff without turning it on. We have one in the VW transporter and it’s brilliant.
I think u should take it to m539 restorations
Joel, a bit more interesting series here than the 240 would've been, but JMHO! She's a keeper! Z4 for the fun; 760LI for the relaxing daily......
Joel the leak in the back could be the seal needs welding the weild could be lose that is what happened to mine
Recon Margot would cost you considerably more than the 1500 quid quoted here. Not sure what to make of the "perks of getting in the back while the boys get ready"-comments in that regard though...
Fair dues on the pricing of fixing her up (the car, not Ms. Robbie). Injectors aside (which are seriously costly), that's in great condition especially considering the value of the car. Looking forward to more V12 adventures, as well as the 24h Z4 challenge. Which -ironically- is probably even harder to get comfortable in than- ah never mind..
I ran E38 740i for about four years back in mid 2000’s. Simply gorgeous and I stupidly sold it as was worried about it turning 100,000 miles 🙄.... so basically just run in!. We really need to stop this very British phenomenon of “mileage anxiety” on modern, well engineered and (as long as it’s properly maintained) reliable cars. Other than leaking radiator and a few pixels in dashboard going, it was trouble free. Still think the E38 is the best looking 7 series and of course was a James Bind car 🤓
Did they check the expansion tank for cracking? Not easy to see visually. This happened on my Z4 and is a common BMW problem.
7:09 still got the 2020 poster up 🙃
Having owned two secondhand 3-series, this is the FIRST £1500... best of luck 🤞
Am happy for you that it’s not too heavy on the wallet!!! Good video 👍👌😎
Hoovies garage eat your heart out :)
Enjoying the content Joel
Thanks mate!
If this is all it takes to be a BMW specialist, then maybe I should be one myself 🤦
A fuel injector from BMW is £148 and that's including vat, a rocker cover gasket is £102, both actually really easy to do having done all of this myself over the past few years....
People have so much hate for this e65/e66 I own 745d for 3 years, all I did was oil change and filters idk why do people
hate this car so much
How much do you pay for insurance?
you can get reconditioned and tests fuel injectors much cheaper than new injectors
Great video Joel, interesting to watch :)
I don’t want to be negative but major coolant ‘leak” with no visual leaking means really bad news. Chances are, its going in the cylinders. Surprised the garage did not check that to see if its a blown head gasket, its a really quick test to do... I wouldn’t call this off so quickly to be honest.
Quality content as usual! Can’t wait to see more videos!
Thanks matey
Nice car you got i always liked 7er i got 335d e92 57reg,. after one month car lost power, limp mode, went garage they said maybe dpf...deleted it and egr cost 450£,nothing changed.Actually turbos died, recondition costed 1200£ so yea to get it back on road 1650£ after a month ,anyone buying same car as me n cheap watch out lol
I see how Joel trying to catch up his content of "trending" stuff on youtube instead of beeing serious vlogger of Z4s :) its kind funny but everybody should have its chance why not :)
Like how no one remembered about the leaky roof
So there we go, just as I and other owns of these cars know, they don't just fall apart under your arse. As the previous owner said, just look after it an it will be a lovely motor. Having owned a 2005 e65 730d since 2008 and done 100k miles with little more than a service once a year ( normal shit like brakes and tyres don't count) had new springs on the rear and the same wish bones an some bushes on the front. Get your gearbox oil changed. I drive quite hard so tyres last about 20k. One silly thing that pisses me off is the windscreen wipers are 86 quid a set. Best bought on offer at euro car parts or ebay. They are special for the e65.
this is my biggest issue with owning an older bmw, the shitty plastics and rubber everywhere that go bad one after another as the car ages. it just ends up costing far too much in the long term
Joel, R Tech in Hinkley can service and clean injectors. You should check the out.
Idk why but the intro of this video reminded me of the Transporter intro with his BMW
Very highly doubt that the injectors could have went, although always possible, i kept constantly having random misfires within a bank and it turned out to be a bad nox sensor and crappy spark plugs, i have been also told by an independent that injectors need replacement, they were wrong! If a whole bank is misfiring it could be something else, like an o2 sensor etc.
Just shows as long as you put a little bit to one side, there’s nothing wrong in running an elderly luxury motor.
Agreed!
Cool for you i only had problems with my 740i which has actually the exact same color combo
A misfire and a coolant leak on the same bank? Cylinder head gasket, I’d put money on it.
exactly... it is very unprobable that all bad injectors are on one bank... I guess something else is going on on this side of engine
Mechanic sounds good, but on the injectors I would venture running a fuel tank cleaner first and foremost and pull the coils and plugs to see how they are doing. I don't think these are direct injection, so being a normal injector might as well rebuild them. Will do the same miles as new ones.
Hit and miss with these... could be solid af or could be the quite opposite. Nonetheless, it was impressive. 740iL they way to go.
Misfiring on one bank- I replace vanos solenoid before replacing injectors.
It turned out to be engine breathers
Glad it all worked out for you.
Jeez those 3 injectors are spenny! I'd be tempted to pop 3 known to be good used ones one there. Yes they might fail sooner, but likely have half the mileage of the factory fitted ones, and save you £500?!
Nice video, kinda wanted it cost a fortune for the laughs but you've clearly bought well 👍
You do get a lot of car for the money!
It will be worth it, in the long run.
Please film the trip to have the work done
Margot Robbie! Too funny. I'll have to remember that one.
Haha, glad you enjoyed that
Haha my E65 06 7 Series has the same items, well front arms, rocket cover leak and coolant leak! as the only issues!
You should do a 50k subscriber meet up with the 760 👍🏻 can’t be far away 🔥
Hopefully by that point we’re all able to travel around!

So much prefer this over your old m240i. Better car by miles and will make for better content.
Definitely got lucky there mate😂 I’d be too scared to drive a big car, I’ll end up hitting something 😂
Imagine not replacing the tow hook cover.
How about the wet carpet issue ?
You so need to straight pipe this! That would be nuts
Those perished rear brake hoses are an MOT failure and not an advisory!
I haven't watched this yet.... I reckon ...... £1200. I was only £300 out. Yay me!
You’re not awfully far off my friend!
not bad to be fair.....pretty much like any old car...and to say i have a jag s type v8 and i had to take that off the road as the rear subframe is shot and it would have cost me roughly £2000 in parts and labour to sort it....then the auto box would need a rebuild at around £1000 and then the suspension at another £1000.....so you have done pretty well there...😂😂
What about the water leak in rear footwell mate
Seems that one got forgotten. My guess is rear heater matrix weeping.
Might be just the rubber in the door not letting water run through it
@@grahamc4418 possibly, or fridge condensation or sunroof drain blocked. Annoying, but it will be fixed in the next video.
Still needs to be investigated
Probably just the door membrane needs resealing - can be done by partially totally removing the door card (look for youtube videos for how to doo this without damaging fixings); heat mastic with hairdrier and then reseat. Common problem in most BMW's.
I am actually eyeing on one. 2007 760li with 78,000 miles on it. I already have a 1997 Mercedes w140 S600. Well another v12 can’t be too much trouble 😂.
