@@WaldosWorld I would be super interested in seeing an engine swap to a motor that is less likely to be A ticking time bomb, possibly a diesel? But I realize with all the complex systems it would be a nightmare getting things to play nice, even with the standalone.
Hi, 4 year L322 2011 Ranger Rover HSE owner here. Mine is almost identical to yours. In my first year of ownership, as the fourth owner with 88k miles, I had to replace the engine with a used one for $10k parts and labour; blown head gasket. The problem with these gorgeous depreciating vehicles--buyers love them because they're cheap, but no one honours the cost of ownership. I change my oil every 4k miles and baby it. 147k miles on the clock now. It has a timeless look and is terrific for snow and long trips. I wish you the best and I subscribed.
I bought a running L322 of auction in Japan for a crazy $1400. Found a few minor issues and made a To Do list. Believe me, the list will keep getting bigger even if you knock off one or two issues every weekend. This car is going to give you a lot of content for your channel
With the body and interior in such perfect condition, this may be worth doing a rebuild. These are body off for engine swap designed, which isnt too bad with a hoist.
These are not a body on chassis. That is the Range Rover sport which is built on a discovery chassis. Its not that hard to drop the front subframe on these to pull the engine though.
Valve's hitting pistons has a much different noise. It'll sound like coins being crushed in the engine and it's every valve on whatever cam is being out of time so it's VERY noisy. Jumped timing enough to cause all my valves in my engine to kiss then hit and bend them all once timing jumped even more. Definitely sounds more like it's the timing chain slapping around.
Not body off on these, only on the L320/L319 Sport and LR3/LR4. Engine comes out the top, or front subframe can be dropped. Easier through the top. That noise sounds like the chain slapping the block. Stick your teshlong down the oil cap and look for chain machined aluminium. Also look for slack in the chain at the oil cap. There should be absolutely none, barely moveable.
Man I absolutely love your content Waldo you will always get a like and comment every time your a very smart dude thank you for your time!! Have a great week!!
As good as it sounds (before the knock)--- I think you would be fine to just do the timing belt change and run it. It might burn a little oil--- but at least there's no hole in the piston. I think it's worth the gamble--- as long as you don't have a dead cylinder on your compression check.
@@WaldosWorld yeah.. Even if you have bad compression on one cylinder, but there's no hole in the piston or valves-- maybe worse case scenario -- you might need to pull the heads and put on new head gaskets if they have gone bad too. Which isn't that much more work once you already have the front all torn apart. --- so that will be a decision that you'll want to think about while you're there. But if compression is good on all cylinders-- I think a new timing chain and water pump would squeeze another 100k miles out of it easy... You might need a new starter and alternator along the way, ect.. But that's to be expected. If the air rids fail completely, you can convert them to regular shocks for fairly reasonable price, compared to fixing the air rides. So there's still options there. Nice find!
Can you drop the pan and con rod and push out the piston from below? Then you could either flex hone to lose the rough stuff or use a porta-bore to resurface the cylinder wall and rering the piston.
with the gas they have today, it has ethanol which basically absorbs the water and pulls it up into the fuel eventually causing phase separation which would cause the fuel to look like brine. so the days of fuel floating on water unless its diesel are pretty much over. the only exception to this would be recreational fuel which has no ethanol or if water was just introduced to the gas recently. I only know this because I used to build gas stations. hope this helps, also diesel has the ability to grow algae and rust can develop in todays diesel fuels on bare metals.

By the time a valve hits a piston you would have correlation codes or misfires or even backfiring out the intake etc and it would barely run if at all, I bet its a broken chain guide causing the chain to be loose and its just slapping around in there a bit. The indentation on the piston has alot of carbon buildup on it meaning its likely not recent. The scoring will likely cause oil consumption and that's usually a worn piston skirt or piston skirt defect and will have a rattle noise when cold known as piston slap.
The indentation on the piston head is from factory. Look up a picture and you will see 4 of those indentations on the top of a brand new piston. Cheers!

Waldo, I have the absolute perfect solution for you if you decide the engine has seen it's better days .LS swap it , then you have a sweet vehicle and some reliability to go along with it. Because let's be real here , those engines were not known for reliability so that's still a factor if you do manage to fix it , the wealth of common issues still will plaque you. You can make some pretty serious horsepower on a bone stock lc9 block and be completely reliable. It maybe be more common of a conversion than you think, I believe painless wiring makes a plug and play harness. I would seriously consider that option or look into it a little with the wealth of info about it .
Bought one new for nearly 50K back in 92. During the next 3 years I put over $27k into it. Wife loved it. I hated it. Needless to say, $27k was the end of the line. Sold it for like 7K...and felt sorry for the guy. worse car I ever owned. good luck with yours.

I really like this era of range rover, styling wise. I have a QX4 and all I ever think is how it's funny that the headlights have a similar shape to the range rover.
Hi Waldo. I admit, I don't know this engine at all, but I DO know that many piston crowns have an indent for the valve(s). Given that the valve itself didn't look (shiny), like there had been any contact, and indeed the indent in the piston also looked 'dirty', I'd say that is not the issue. Good luck with whatever it is. Regards Mark in the UK
Waldo please bring back the IDI international and the gooseneck please I'm a super big fan of tho's projects please please please bring them back for the next episode
The knock may be from the supercharger coupling inside the nose cone if its the supercharger 5.0, those are misdiagnosed as engine knocks sometimes. Another weak point is the timing chains you can check them by removing the oil cap and pulling the chain a little to check for tension
i follow a couple of land rover channels and came across ur channel, watched about 10 of ur vids so far and really enjoying them, thanks for taking the time to do them
Correction, that vehicle WAS highly desirable. Those older Range Rovers have all kinds of issues, most are probably off leases and not regularly maintained . You probably bought a $2000 money pit. 😀
I haven't read all of the comments but there will undoubtedly be a lot of negative ones; afterall, it's a Range Rover😊. My neighbors bought one (they are on the "uppie" side) without asking for my input. Can't really blame them for that. It broke down the first time on their drive home from the dealership! I first learned of the purchase when one of them asked to borrow some tools. You're certainly right that the interior is a nice place to be while you're on the side of the road waiting for the towing service. Anyhow, considering the back story and that it's you doing the Dx and Rx, I know there will likely be a very happy ending.
Hey Waldo thanks for all your lovely videos, A friend of mine had a similar problem with one of these and put a Mercedes straight 6 cylinder 3liter turbocharged in it and it has been going strong ever since. Maybe that’s an idea pursuing. You can get a lot of HP out of these as well
I took the RR vogue onto an army course made for MERCEDES UNIMOG, ETC, it lost a few bits fro front & rear, but plastic replacement parts, except the rear reg plate. Needless to say the vehicle performed better than expected in a somewhat almost impossible drive, but what impressed me most was the level of comfort afforded in such rough terrain.
That seems like a great find Waldo! I’m excited to see you get the vehicle back to its former glory! Random question: where’d you get your work boots from? They look like old leather ones, I’m curious about finding something like them for myself
Last year I purchased my dream car… 2021 RangeRover sport straight from the Dealership. I was happily driving home excited to show my wife & just then… the engine started aggressively knocking & the car totally cut out! luckily had LR warranty as it needed a complete engine replacement (£14.5k) Once the engine was fixed, the car had non stop electrical issues. Spent more time at LR repair garage than my garage! Never again. Now I’ve got a tesla & life is good 😎
Normal people: I love his videos! They're very fun and informational. Me: I wonder if he'll take a break from youtube so I can comment on his last video "where's Waldo?"
I have the extraction unit that runs with an air compressor- no manual hand pumping! Also, don’t assume a new battery is fully charged. Attach a trickle charger to it to fully charge it!
My buddy had the supercharged version of that truck, 510 horsepower was fun, but it was very unreliable, a $10,000 bill right around the corner if it broke down.
I want to point something out to you perhaps you may notice how the entire vehicle is enclosed there is nothing one would refer to as a bed and thus this is an SUV it is not a truck

I just bought an 08 ford expedition that runs and drives perfect with 120k the only thing was the rear shocks went out. I bought it for 2900$ cash the suspension costed 1600$ to fix. It was 55k when new. I love it. It's fully loaded. Even has a back up cam on the rear view mirror, back in o
08 was a nice touch.
You had to put $27k into a new vehicle (first 3 years)? Wasn’t it under warranty?
🤩 Loved your content, lots of work involved. Seeing you fixing this legend is going to be exciting, maybe you can tear down this engine and show us from inside if need arises it will be fun to watch that. Complete tear down of this v8 will go with tons of work and many parts replacements.
My sisters 2015 Range Rover has had the check engine light on for a couple years now...
LS swap time! Just as expensive as rebuilding but much more reliable and easier to service.
Bro ur content is absolute gold
Range Rover at auction, you’re definitely an “Automotive Masochist”. 😁Definitely fun to watch though!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! 😂
What’s the engine displacement??
It's a 5.0L
As a retired Euro Trash Tech I had a lot of customers who bought these things. They usually didn't keep them long as they soon found out the British Press was right in naming it the most unreliable car in the world.....
NOBODY bought a 2nd one.
Hey Waldo, just watched all 5 parts (and then some) of this series. I had to go back and like them all as you surely deserve that recognition and YT revenue. You have incredible patience and courage. In addition to all the mechanical knowledge I picked up watching you, perhaps the most valuable piece is no NEVER consider buying a Range Rover. 😅
Really appreciate your content and mechanical knowledge. Thank you.
Waldo! You are a very smart, multi talented young man with some amazingly produced content seemingly out of nowhere.
I would love to hear some kind of backstory. I’ve been following since 60-70k subs and I’ve been very curious.
Bought a 2007 l322 with 154k miles a year ago. I’ve swapped so much in a year it’s crazy but she drives smooth and my family loves it. She’s been very reliable and only at 160k now so 6k miles in a year. Not bad. I plan to swap the engine and trans for new remanufactured ones. It’s gonna be so sweet.

8:35 yes it is that loud....
I've been doing some research and I think you might be right! I'm still investigating to track down the issue, but I'm certainly hopeful 👍
@@WaldosWorld greetings from Nairobi Kenya
@@WaldosWorld hello bro which site did u buy it from
I liked the video after you called it the boot. Respect.
I think a LS swap is in order.. That would be fun. Ron
2009 TDV8 owner here! Loved this video, the depreciation on these is crazy but means we can pick them up and enjoy them!
Waldo please bring back the IDI international and the gooseneck please I'm a super big fan of tho's projects please please please bring them back for the next episode
I will hopefully make a lot of progress on those projects this spring/summer 👍
@@WaldosWorld Im in such anticipation to see how they come out
This is my new favorite UA-cam channel!
The knock may be from the supercharger coupling inside the nose cone if its the supercharger 5.0, those are misdiagnosed as engine knocks sometimes. Another weak point is the timing chains you can check them by removing the oil cap and pulling the chain a little to check for tension
That’s not a 5.0l sc it’s the na model
The supercharger would be seen as it’s a massive alloy unit on top
Waldo,
I'm guessing nobody told you Range Rovers are mechanical garbage,
but it does look good from a distance.
Even engine rebuild or swap, Waldo got himself snazzy rig at a bargin price.
Hopefully it stays at a bargain price! 😂
This guy is amazing, more knowledge, less drama.
Totally better than any other channels like Goonzquad.
When is gooseneck part 3 coming
I promise I'm going to get to it soon(ish)! 😬
Okkk
I like Waldo’s voice… very soothing and refreshing
Hey Waldo, wishing you luck that you can get this running on the cheap and consider it a score. Looking forward to the compression test results.
Thank you! I hope so too! 😬
i follow a couple of land rover channels and came across ur channel, watched about 10 of ur vids so far and really enjoying them, thanks for taking the time to do them
Correction, that vehicle WAS highly desirable. Those older Range Rovers have all kinds of issues, most are probably off leases and not regularly maintained . You probably bought a $2000 money pit. 😀
I have a 2011 Range Rover supercharged L332 and I’m about to have the timing chain replaced after a lot of consideration just because I love the L322.
You are growing a proper parking lot over there.
I know, right? When I got this delivered, I had to shuffle around a bunch of vehicles to make room 😂
"WALDO" 🤣 Oh no, if my parents named me that, I wouldn't speak to them anymore. 😂
I always thought these would be a perfect candidate for an engine swap.
Theyd be a great candidate for a cheap and reliable LS swap!
The original Rover engine is good for more than 600K miles, with just basic maintenance. No need for swap!
You have profound knowledge of cars... What's your background? Amazing man.
Fix it and flip it. Landrovers are known for never ending technical issues.
Hey Waldo thanks for all your lovely videos,
A friend of mine had a similar problem with one of these and put a Mercedes straight 6 cylinder 3liter turbocharged in it and it has been going strong ever since.
Maybe that’s an idea pursuing. You can get a lot of HP out of these as well

Have a look here. Jurrie.
Was it an OM606? Coz I'm seriously considering it
Hi 👋
@@allysonhanks9159 What's up
Why does the car look so low down?
Probably air suspension settings
I took the RR vogue onto an army course made for MERCEDES UNIMOG, ETC,
it lost a few bits fro front & rear, but plastic replacement parts, except the rear reg plate. Needless to say the vehicle performed better than expected in a somewhat almost impossible drive, but what impressed me most was the level of comfort afforded in such rough terrain.
That's what it's about: comfort and capability!
Always great content from Waldo
Thank you!
Great content. Thanks for sharing your car enthusiast journey. Subscribed.
you had me at your personal title of automotive masochist 😂😂
If nothing else, I would have thought you could sell it for parts, or part it out for way more than $2000…
That's very true!
@Jim jibroni Depends, the rims are probably worth 200$ each if they are in ok condition.
You've got a new subscriber! Great videos!
Great video! Love the details. Had no idea about the Teslong. Would be awesome to find out how to fix the timing chain issue on the cheap.
I love when he says the knocking is not that loud. It sounded like a Kenworrth Tractor.
That seems like a great find Waldo! I’m excited to see you get the vehicle back to its former glory!
Random question: where’d you get your work boots from? They look like old leather ones, I’m curious about finding something like them for myself
Those are Carolina boots. They've been very comfortable and durable! I'll definitely be buying another pair when the time comes 👍
@Waldo’s World
Thanks for the reply! I’ll definitely be looking into those, thanks for the review!
I love the quality of your production. Surely subscribing.
I appreciate it!
When a guy buys a Land Rover like that, with eventual huge problems, you can surely say he’s got balls!
Congrats for the courage!
Would be great content to see you do a rebuild yourself, I know I would enjoy watching the complete process.
No chipping or cracking , not a drop of rust , clean car in and out.
Definitely a jackpot. Could flip it for 10 k easy
@@yzrippin but some people refer to Big SUV’s as trucks
A lot of the foraging second hand cars that are sold in the US specially European are cars that were crashed fixed in Poland and re sold to markets outside the EU. This people are so good at fixing them the cars look brand new.
