- How to Breathe Properly in Boxing and Stay Relaxed | In this video Tony shares some tips on how you can breathe properly while boxing. Breathing is something that we do every single day without even thinking about it. This is why it is very important in boxing but it is hard to do. It is hard because it's probably natural to think that if you are going to punch you have to hold your breath and be tense, but it is the opposite. To get more power in your punches you need to breathe and to get more speed in your punches you need to be able to breathe. To be able to last a full round of boxing you need to be able to breathe. SO if you are holding your breath for a two minute or a three minute round it is not going to take you that long to too much energy.

When I am teaching boxing trainers how to teach one of the biggest mistakes I see is often with bigger men, they come in the gym and will be holding their breath as they hit the heavy bag.
If you can whistle while boxing with good techniques and good form, you know that you are relaxing during boxing.
My name is Tony Jeffries, Olympic Bronze medallist, former undefeated professional boxer and now co-owner of Box 'N Burn, 2 boxing fitness gyms in Los Angeles, as well as the Box 'N Burn Academy...this I sour education program where we teach trainers how to teach boxers (Link below). Welcome to my youtube channel. In this video, I will teach you how to breath better while relaxing. Breathing is one of the hardest things to do when boxing, it took me a year to be able to do it well. The reason why I am teaching you this is because if you are not doing it correctly you will burn your energy really fast.

Hola, pivoting
I would love some on good footwork and some basic moves
How do I properly protect my hands like palm.
How long on average for your body to start developing muscle memory? Or everybody is different?
Being quickly out of breath and energy is something I struggle with... I will try your progression.., thank you!
Me too
The hardest part of controling ur breathing is dont over think n CONCONTRATE on breathingOUT the inhalation ul fund its self get that exhales out each punch or if holding pads good to breath out wen partner hots them will help ur guys defense n help ur timing if exhale as they hit pads n mind use exhale the inhale looks after itself only take deep breath well out range 👍👍👏👏👏
Just checking on ya fam, how did it go? Lol
Hope your progress is there big dog! ❤
Get ur stamina up
Breath through your nose! The jaws must remain closed to reduce the chances of a broken jaw. When puched in the ribs especially, breath out to absorb shock.
Wow bro thanks
It's so so hard to breathe through my nose.
Breathing through nose is normal breathing for regular everyday routines…when you’re fighting you could still have your jaws locked and do inhale and exhale and plus knowing your timing to do inhale and exhale cause boxing is based on correct timing when doing things. And no matter how you try to lock your jaw, certain hits to your jaw can cause the jaw to unlock.
I recently returned to training and I was surprised I could not last 1 session of padwork. I tot its purely stamina but now I noticed that I have been breathing out on my strikes, I forgot to breathe in and pretty much held my breath on the way out and then the second round of combos and then one more and I was done. After practising this and being mindful of being relaxed and remembering to breathe, I lasted round after round of padwork... indeed, its not just stamina, its proper breathing! Thank you sir!
Pads are so much more tiring to me then regular training I'm out of breath within 5 minutes
The whistling tipp is pretty amazing!😉
When sparring I try to concentrate on my breathing when out of punching and kicking range. You are correct, staying relaxed and breathing correctly is a HUGE part of combat skill. Thanks again Tony, hope all is well with you and Box n burn. 👏👍🥊🇺🇸🇬🇧
Also think about your breathing and relaxing mate, when your in range keep your body tight but still stay relaxed
@@Tony_Jeffries I know I’m late but is 14 too late to start boxing?
@@hamzahpatel4994 no, go for it!
once the adrenalin and cortisol hits yes! breathing is HUGE
It amazes me that how natural and instinctive it is to hold breath when fighting. The breathing skill is learned through experience, and not built-in in our DNA.
"Breathing, it's something we do every single dee" lmao awesome vid thanks
Thank you so much, Tony! Tomorrow is gonna be my first bag punching session. I’ve learned alot throught your videos. Best explanations ever.
I find it hard coaching my own kids.. I used this hands down drill with my family and it helped them understand better than my instructions. I also worked in shoulder rolls and now head movement. You helped my family out tons! Jeffries big thanks for your time and passion you’re a real gem!
Anytime mate!
Thanks, Tony for this video, it's such a vital part of boxing and many newcomers want to skip over practising routines to improve their technique.
Breathing, balance & breathing. My old S & C coach use to use the metaphor of a tire releasing air rapidly. Breathing is so important as it provides oxygen to the blood, improves endurance, and improves lung capacity.
I have tried Clenbuterol in the past and although I hated the overall feeling it made me feel like I had an extra lung - I wouldn't recommend it as it dramatically raises the heart rate, increases core body temperature etc, very dangerous.
I have found swimming forces people to learn to regulate (including myself) their breath. The whistle serves as an auditory 'anchor' which works well too - I often have to stop and 'reset'.
Keep the videos coming Tony, they are spot on.
My breathing has always been terrible in any physical activity. Thanks for making these videos I'm learning more info on how to use boxing in my workout routines.
So glad I found this channel. Brushing up on the basics and learning new things as well. Fantastic channel.

"At 50-80% speed" then proceeds to throw some damn fast punches! Just found your channel Tony, thanks so much for the content; recently been getting back into boxing; having someone as qualified and decorated as you remind me of the stuff that my old coach used to really helps keep me motivated and lets me know where to focus my attention when training. Cheers. :)
I mean, he doesn’t have all those awards because he was bad at boxing.
This channel is invaluable!
Love the channel mate. Short and to the point. As a wannabe boxer, always applying what ya teach, cheers
Thank you 🙏🏼 means alot Howie
Just started getting into boxing and at 375 pounds it's going to be a long road but I'm enjoying every minute. I come from a grappling background so learning striking is a major challenge for me and I know breathing was something I've struggled with so far.
You nailed it with "big guys come in trying to kill the bag and in 30 seconds their doubled over" and I just thought "shit, was this dude watching me when I first went in? lol"
Definitely gonna try that movement drill with the hands down as part of my pre-warmup. Much appreciated Tony.
Great content and advice Tony. Thanks
Great vid Tony - so what about breathing and using a mouth guard? Is there anything more to mention about this?
My biggest problem. Thanks for your advice.
champ thanks for all of videos 🥊👍❤️
short, simple, practical & easy to follow...proper quality, subscribed

I understood this in minutes this guy is a great teacher
What I like about this guy is that even if he doesn't introduce himself at the beginning of the video, it's easy to tell that he's that good just by how refined his movements are.
I am a beginner and I was getting tired really quickly and turns out I wasnt breathing properly
I did 4 3 min roumds of shadowboxing following the methods shown in this video and I did not get tired. Thank you for this
Love your channel thanks for great tips

Hi Tony, great video. Thank you! I’ve learned a lot. How do I increase power in my punch & speed? Any advice appreciated.
Much appreciated 😊
Great sequence. You should do a piece on shadow boxing, which obviously is deeply related to, but also distinct from what you teach here with respect to breathing. Wonderful class!!
Were you able to watch this video about shadow boxing ua-cam.com/video/i12A6G_LiJo/v-deo.html ??
Great video, great channel.

Hi Tony, when shadow boxing (all we can currently do at home) do you have any tips to prevent hyper extension of the joints when trying to practice at 100% speed .?
I'm a 54 year old broken old man from Derby.... so trying to protect my joints.
