Hole saws are great tools but they can be dangerous! You need to be careful and think about what you are doing, how you hold your body, how you hold the tool and how your work piece is secured.
This video was originally going to be part of a video on the construction of my Rocket Stove but I decided to make a separate video to make the rocket stove video shorter and more digestible.

Watch your video again and look at the cords from your hoodie. Always tuck the cords inside when you're working with rotating machines. You won't like it if they get caught

I had a 6" Milwaukee hole saw and it was binding- so I spun it in REVERSE! It stopped the kick backs. I was cutting wood- took a little longer but it did not bind for me.
Pretty hard on the saws though. They will go blunt quickly

So glad I found this among other videos. I bought a corded Skil drill and a 6 inch hole saw bit and dove in. Now, I’m second guessing working with wood all together. That was by far the freakiest power tool experience I’ve had so far. I haven’t cussed that much in a long time. I thought it was just me and my tool compatibility with the bit. A “bit” is a funny term for that huge, heavy effer.
Yeah they can be daunting.
I learned my lesson with holes saws when I was young, they are no joke. Even when you "KNOW" they will do everything they can to misbehave and hurt you. Hole saws are one of the most insolent tools out there!
Yeah especially the big ones. All that torque reversed into your wrist. Although once the battery pack nearly took my jaw off.

This video was incredibly encouraging. I'm currently working on installing 4" vent holes in the eaves of my roof. I've never used a hole saw except on doors, so never had a problem with that hole saw bind-up. I have no way to secure my drill and saw other than using just sheer strength and patience. The batteries run out of juice just about the time I do, so that's a plus. I have to install 44 of them. Getting it done, though. Just glad to see I'm not the only one. :)
Yes there is some comfort in knowing that I'm not the only foolish one. I'd rather more people learn though and not have to suffer the pain or share in this particular comfort.

good info i got a 120mm saw for my drill press. it was so damned aggressive (and i didnt have clamps) it went back on the shelf within 2mins 🤣 trying again with a 90mm tmrw. got some clamps and emplying my bench vises as a backup to stop anything spinning. these things honestly scare the crap out of me for some reason. i guess if its teeth are bigger than my shin its a worry. also always use cutting fluid on metal.
First time using a hole saw/drill and was cutting a hole in a new deck board last night for the propane line. It grabbed hard and felt like my hand/thumb got ripped off. Saw this video first thing this morning. Thanks for the tips. Gonna rest my sore hand a few days before I try again

Should have searched for some guidelines on how to and what not to before using a hole saw. Had it in thr drill and wood clamped down, but oh man! The moment those teeth bit into the pine, the drill jerked, jump and went flying over my workbench. Needless to say, I have to take a break for the swelling in my wrist to go down and used the time to buy a drill press. Tork Craft has a nice one - attached the drill to it and slowly (and squinting) drilled through the wood without expanding my vocabulary. Thank you for the tutorial. I'm a home crafter but feel like I'm slowly qualifying myself to up my skills
I'm a scientist by training. I grew up on a farm so I had some basic skills like fencing and what not but its been a process learning to be handy.
your drill is turning counterclockwise - normally - when you drill a hole - the drill motor turns clockwise - most drills have a switch that places the motor in clockwise or counterclockwise turning action.
Take it from a guy who broke his wrist . Lol.. worst ive gotten was drilling through a girder up on an 18 foot ceiling up on a ladder and that fucker caught and swung around punches me in the jaw, bit falls out then the drill as i was pulling it down the spinny bit grabbed my beard and ripped a big chunk of it out after punchng my jaw again. So i drop the drill, the power cord is apparently wrapped around my foot and sweeps it right out from under me and i rethink my job choice as im falling 18 feet to a concrete floor, bleeding from my jaw from both ripped out hair and skin and from getting wopped in the face twice.. hit the concrete which sends the hard hat off left field and a concussion in my brain.. on top of all that i had 3 burritos for lunch so as i concussed myself, i also transferred the burritos from stomach to pants.. buddy working with me said when i hit the ground it sounded like when you pull on a weedeater and doesnt start one time.. great day to be alive that day was.. got fired also because of a pot brownie i ate that nobody told me was pot about a week earlier so i got denied workers comp and insurance along with the boot from a 10 year job that i was at the top of making great money.. so yea. Hold your fucking drill with both hands and your dick if you got one cuz that shit will hand it to ya if you dont…

Should have a handle on the drill to keep it from breaking your wrist. Look at the Milwaukee hole shooter that is made for that type of work.
Theres a torque setting on your drill. Use that. Don't put it into the mode with the "drill icon" that actually means "fuck your wrist up""
Torque setting doesn't work for these large hole saws. Well it works, stops turning, but not in a way that is useful.

Yeah be careful with that. The sudden snap could be nasty.
By today’s standards my old Dewalt 985 maybe a bit of a dinosaur but it has loads of power and an auxiliary handle to keep it under control, it is now my dedicated hole saw drill.
Yeah those old fellas keep turning.
The key is to use a drill with a slip clutch aka torque control
great safety video. i use hole saws occasionally but regularly, and priority is safety. my technique has evolved to the following:
-grab 3 drills with screw clutches.
-clamp the workpiece very securely as necessary
drill 7/32” or 1/4” pilot w separate bit, as you suggest
-chuck up the hole saw and tighten down the screw clutch; spin it backwards to get pilot thru and scape a shallow ring with the hole saw
-loosen the clutch way up; spin it in fwd and tighten cluch just enough to cut. the clutch will then protect you as it binds here and there as you drill. you may need to keep tightening up clutch a bit on thicker wood since overall friction goes up the deeper you get
-switch drills as they overheat. the clutch drills are usually not heavy duty. cheap lithium ion battery drills can have plenty of torque , especially if brushless, but bad thermals. don’t smoke your motor windings !
-if it starts binding bad at the end, tighten clutch up and spin it backwards again for the exit
Yeah a cluthed drill can make things safer again. But a lot of them don't have much grunt. With the 4" and above hole saws they require a bit of omph.
@@StuartChignell Agreed - that's why I recommend three drills and rotating between them as they start to overheat The cheap lithium battery drills (ideally with brushless motors) , with clutches , usually have plenty of torque but are prone to smoking when pushed hard for too long ..
@@yeliab814 Just buy one good drill that comes with an accessory handle. Cordless drills have tons of power now. Starting backwards and using the clutch are handy, but the handle allows you to not spend all day drilling.
@@affinity3281 plenty of ways to skin the cat. i like to use the tools i already have, save my wrists, and protect the material from chipping by reversing it in and at the end . for me it's worth the time , savings and better result; but i can appreciate those aren't necessarily the same priorities for contractors etc.

aftab m there are certainly handheld drills with adjustable clutches, I own 2. Much safer than using your body to brace it. still need to make sure that what ever you're cutting is secure though!!
@@indawgwetrust4255 oh, for smaller hand drill I was taught to use the clutch setting to prevent screws going too deep into wood. Never thought of using it to protect my wrist

Yes its possible but might not be the best option.

Use a jigsaw after drilling a large enough hole
This may sound stupid but are these supposed to come with a lock nut for the inside so it don't spin off? Mine damn near went across the room 😅😂
There is supposed to be at least two locking pins to prevent this or the opposite (over tightening) from happening.

Will it help if you spray oil on the surface you're cutting into?
If it's wood, you can run the drill in reverse. It's far slower but highly unlikely to bite and injure your wrist.
I'd be worried about ripping the carbide teeth off the saw doing that.

Called a Protool. Used to be a separate brand owned by the same company as Festool. But wound the brand up. Now you get them through Festool.

Well the first thing is to make sure your position is secure. If your on a ladder make sure its sitting securely on the ground. Probably with someone holding it. then as much as possible use your upper body to brace the body of the drill and be careful. Having said that I know employers often don't like assigning extra people for safety to do jobs they were trained to do by themselves. In Australia the laws are pretty strict on how you have to protect employees but it can still be hard to get your boss to obey them.

I once intentionally put a drill with a hole saw in a plastic grocery bag simply because I was bored, it was a lucky day for me, I will never do that again
