As you say, the problem is that they're not willing to get rid of old info or, even better, make a sub-page for the same item/boss/whatever for an older version so every bit of information is where it belongs and where it is helpful. The Ivy Whip being mentioned so much in particular probably goes back to the 1.0 and 1.1 days when it was the only other hook besides the basic grappling hook (talking pre-HM in 1.1).
I just learned about Terraria today, so first thing I did was find out where I can buy it. After going to the 14th page of Google search results, I found someone selling a used copy of the game on eBay, along with the Xbox 360 (from 2005) used to play it. Very excited to play! I sure hope the wiki has a ton of outdated info mixed in with relevant info!

@@Criz454 Minecraft's wiki has a solution for this: It's called page revision history! Just look for a page edited during the time of the update you're interested in. That said, Dwarf Fortresses solution is more use friendly but also harder to implement, as you have to decided which versions are worthy enough to alternative pages for. I love wiki culture but this it more and more strongly become anti-edit over time. I see this same type of thing brewing on the Dwarf Fortress wiki mostly in the "community articles" type sections. Once someone adds something to a page, if it gets deemed as part of "community culture" in some way it basically never gets removed, like the piles of bad fan fiction cluttering various articles. My ideal wiki is informative only and it's always sad to see great articles held back by the community maintaining them, especially because old maintainers tend to drive new maintainers out to preserve decades old nonsense.
On the flaming arrow page, it lists a 3ds/old gen console tip to use a molten fury with an endless quiver to get free arrows. 3ds/old gen console. Endless quiver. Whoever did the change literally just swapped the desktop version icon with the 3ds and old gen ones without checking if one of the included items was even around before 1.3
I think the mistake was actually caused due to the template that creates the icons itself, as setting an instance of it to display pre-1.4 icons seems to cause it to automatically display the old gen console and 3DS icons. Whoever added it likely didn't have a good understanding of how the platform icon template worked.

One of my favorite lines from the Terraria Wiki is, on the trivia for the Blindfold, "a real-life blindfold usually disables the wearer's sight instead of preventing sight-deteriorating effects." Like, wow, never would've thought! They also seem to take everything Red says completely seriously, like on the Guide's page in the trivia it says "according to Redigit, the Guide is the Wall of Flesh, the brother of the ninja inside King Slime, the great-grandson of the Nymph, and the son of the Moon Lord. *It's unknown whether these statements are jokes."* Like seriously???? You don't even need to look at the context of what Red said to know that him being the great grandson of the Nymph (not to mention while simultaneously being the son of the Moon Lord) is a complete joke, no one was supposed to take that seriously in the slightest
Family tree: Nymph: 1 child Child grows up, then makes bebe with moonlord, creating two beings: The guide, and the ninja. Wiki people: yep, seems factual to me!

@@a_random_lizard either that or moon lord had a child with a nymph, which I’d argue makes more sense than him killing his entire race. Still bonkers tho
a lesser known fact about Lifeforce Potions is that they're technically obtainable pre-Skeletron because Gold Chests that generate close enough to the underworld contain primary Cavern loot and secondary Underworld loot, including Lifeforce Potions (it also results in being able to obtain Meteorite Bars pre-evil boss because they're part of the secondary Underworld loot). the problem is that this piece of information is HIDDEN IN THE TIPS SECTION OF THE METEORITE BAR ARTICLE, it doesn't even get mentioned on the article for Gold Chests which is fairly informative regarding Underground and Cavern loot that can be obtained. it's so bad that i only knew of this fact by RANDOMLY reading the Meteorite Bar article to remember how many bars i need for everything, and not because i thoroughly read the Gold Chest article to get an idea of how likely i am to get the item i want
It *does* get meantioned in the arcticle for chests overall though. "Cavern Gold Chests that spawn within 250 blocks of the bottom of the world will generate the same common items as Shadow Chests." I contributed a lot to the class setups page, specifically Summoner, and the wiki editors kept reverting it because they were absolutely clueless, they didn't even know that Firecracker + Stardust Dragon is better than Kaleidoscope + Terraprisma.
That's not really the case though. Dragon Cracker has higher raw DPS, but in practice the vastly higher range of Kaleidoscope combined with the vastly more reliable & responsive AI of Terraprisma makes Kaleidoscope + Terraprisma better and more practical against Moon Lord in whip builds.

I feel like half the people making the wiki were trying to make a linear guide to the best strategy and loadout for each section of the game, and the rest were trying to give a detailed account of every item available at each stage so that the players could read through the corresponding pages and pick a load out that works for them. Both of these are pretty valid strategies... but then neither side bothered to communicate their goals to the other and both parties gave up half way through.

Literally how is the calamity wiki better than this?? I never even noticed these issues because I only use specific pages for specific info. This isn't even a fandom wiki issue because this isn't the fandom wiki!! HOW
Being unwilling to remove outdated content because on a couple of platforms it might still be relevant is really weird when you could just simply make a dedicated page that is dedicated to those versions while keeping the standard one up to date and conflict free. Great video as always, you're an extremely knowledgeable and passionate person and I hope that one day you'll get the attention that you deserve.
They could easily dedicate a "Patch changes" section like wow's wiki does to include changes from different updates though that involves reading ALOT of patch logs. Personally I think it's an effect of a shrinking community. A game with a large robust community rarely struggles with the wiki. A game with a small/shrinking community. Good luck getting a half decent wiki
BROOO I FELL FOR THAT TIP ABOUT THE SHROOMERANG! They should do it like the binding of isaac wiki does where you have page versions for each different major release (in isaacs case: rebirth, afterbirth, afterbirth+, and repentance)
In a normal playthrough, the only times I fight Duke pre-Plantera is when I'm REALLY struggling on a boss (sometimes bosses), and desperately want to defeat said boss.
In the deerclops guide it lists that "In Expert Mode, Shield of Cthulhu's dash is essential and makes the fight considerably easier." HAS NOBODY ON THE WIKI FOUGHT DEERCLOPS ON EXPERT BEFORE?

@padlyo7150 my tactic is cheesier but efficient and can be done with little hp. Se a house near where you are fighting deerclops with a chair and campfire. The issue with the Terraria wiki is that it's basically a mess solely due to the wiki transition from the Fandom website to the Wiki website (formerly abandoned). The Fandom website is basically being left behind as a result of Fandom cluttering their websites with adds and generally not improving anything for people who work on website itself, so they have been transitioning slowly to the Wiki website, which as a result, has basically been left it in shambles since they are basically forced to make a lot of half assed corrections as quickly as possible, which ironically has resulted in a large amount of misinformation and constrictions as a result.
Having personally fixed up and written pages for a different wiki, it's definitely extremely annoying to see obvious lies written as fact. Or the writers personal opinions just thrown in for no reason. (Ivy Whip)
I wanna say it was like, 1.2.4 (or maybe it was like, 1.2.8? I don't think it was 1.3 yet. iirc duke fishron wasn't a thing yet, so the 'final boss' of the game was basically golem...) Anyway, back in those days when mimics spawned from chest statues dropped their stuff (and if you had it set up in the dungeon, they could even spawn dungeon spirits cause mimics had 500 HP), paladin's hammer was heralded as like, 'the best weapon'. Disclaimer: this was back in like, 2016 when I had first played terraria and I very much do not remember the specifics other than that random factoids about mimics (don't even remember if they dropped all their stuff, just money, or just spawned dungeon spirits, leading to easy ectoplasm farms). I just remember making a big farm with lava at the bottom and traps and everything (I think for events? Maybe pumpkin moon?) and that the paladins hammer was my go to weapon, and that there was prolly a reason for that, and that I prolly hadn't come to the conclusion that it was 'the best weapon' myself.

Instead of having everything clumped up together and preventing the deletion of outdated content the walkthrough should be split up and have dedicated pages for each major version then updated accordingly , with 1.3 , 1.4 and even 1.2.12785 if that tickles thy fancy , it's the version I started on and I still have it on my phone for nostalgia sake. I'd freaking love to contribute to the walkthroughs myself and organize/edit data. Still credit where credit is due props for the effort of the people maintaining the wiki , still must be difficult and I'm sure it's tough to please an entire community.

About duke.. they don't say tsunami is obliged and necessary, it's just ONE of the option. it doesn't mean people can live without whole guide if they can beat one boss. for me duke is easier than queen slime and mechs, that's why i beat him as the first hardmode boss (I RECORDED, not lying). it was my FIRST EVER master mode playthrough, i played melee and just needed the flairon. i'm not skilled and couldn't even tank their attacks with my high defense, especially the twins, the duke has fun and consistent pattern. that's also why i did daytime eol before golem, the difficulty is subjective. and i don't consider myself as skilled player, i almost died to the golem several times Upd.: i didn't cheese him but nothing stops you from it, so it would be even better and won't take any skill All aside this can be actually useful on get fixed boi seed. If i start it i gonna kill the duke as the fist hm boss for easier kill of mechdusa. That's because he's literally unchanged, i have to dodge him samely almost without hits, but that will save my time for mechdusa arena and more. And many people did that Upd. 2: about the shrimpy truffle.. i used it to overdamage plantera by putting more offensive and defensive accessories in free slots, i pulled bubble lines with the honey Upd. 3: i also beat skeletron before the brain of cthulhu / queen bee / deerclops. idk why people find him difficult, i just reforged all to warding via shimmer and used the thorn chakram. he hasn't any difficult attack, all you have is to dodge his homing skulls which is pretty easy even without the slime mount. i find queen bee harder because of fast attacks and debuffs, eater of worlds too because of shooting (almost died to him with post-fishron gear) and especially brain of cthulhu with its 2nd phase where you need to FOCUS So i genuinely used dark lance for boc and night's edge for qb idk why people don't do that but it's their choice and it's fine
same. i remember almost dying to the golem and lunatic cultist with post-duke and -eol gear. the difficulty is completely subjective and that proves all. also i like how the wiki shows you ALL possible variants of weapons instead of one scheme "always use the terra blade till the end blah blah blah" making the game more variable and interesting, you DON'T HAVE TO use tsunami but you CAN and it's fine
Pretty smart strategy with the duke and skeletron, the golem can be really difficult in the tight place, i'm lazy to use honey or outside arena so for me it was easier to obtain terraprisma and deal with him in 15 seconds, i can say that on get fixed boi the duke is actually EASIER than mechdusa and especially its preps
Honestly if they care about preservation for old info so much, why didn't they just save a different page for each major update instead of making it confusing like this?
I don't think they care about preservation that much, they just got used to including all versions because it was actually relevant (when Tmod and the regular game were on different versions for example) and not that intrusive. But then ended up continuing to do it out of habit even after it stopped being useful and became very intrusive.
Not even gonna lie to ya, wiki fooled me with the Scaly Truffle and the Shrimpy Truffle cuz of that page lol, i spent an eternity building the biome to get it and was hit by the slow and non-infinite flight reality :(
Honestly, I actually appreciate the vague advice on the class guides. It's a nudge in the right direction that lets you experiment with the available options yourself. Definitely can see the other side for people who want a true guide though.
Besides keeping the pre 1.4 pages separately, I wish the console 3DS crafting recipes (that are almost always different) were kept hidden in a spoiler div, or on a separate page altogether. It’s really annoying when reading, and sometimes you mistake the recipe
I watched this video 3 months after it was uploaded, but I've been using the wiki's walkthru guides religiously for the past 2 months-ish and it's nowhere near as confusing as it is in this video! i want to think this video had huge hand on improving those pages
When I first did a playthrough of terraria almost a decade ago, I didn't look at the wiki once. I think for the best experience, you shouldn't either. It's so much more fun to find out things on your own, not knowing what you're gonna come across.
i wish there was some updated form of viewing recipes in vanilla terraria because having to talk to the guide constantly and write down important recipes necessary for progression is a little infuriating to me
Ehh, it depends. In my opinion the best way to experience Terraria for the first time is to play it with a friend who has a little more knowledge of the game. Just because half the game's content is locked behind Hardmode, which is only hinted at in a single Guide tip that the player probably won't ever see because by that point in the game you wouldn't think to talk to the Guide anymore.
Yeah, I'm kind of disappointed tbh and I'm wondering if there's anything we can do about it. I absolutely love wikis and open source everything, including information. It's been a few months so maybe things are better? Not sure though.
yeah, torch luck is only ever positive. The only way you can get negative luck is by killing ladybugs or town NPCs and it's a very brief duration. Torch luck will always be between 0.0 and 0.2. Using the wrong torches will bring you down from 0.2 to 0.0, but it will never bring you to a negative luck.

The insistence on including pre-1.4 info for EVERYTHING clogging up EVERY page is honestly the most baffling thing about the wiki to me
Especially since tmodloader is now in the latest version of the game it's really just pointless.

@@Criz454 Minecraft's wiki has a solution for this: It's called page revision history! Just look for a page edited during the time of the update you're interested in. They also seem to take everything Red says completely seriously, like on the Guide's page in the trivia it says "according to Redigit, the Guide is the Wall of Flesh, the brother of the ninja inside King Slime, the great-grandson of the Nymph, and the son of the Moon Lord. *It's unknown whether these statements are jokes."*
Like seriously???? You don't even need to look at the context of what Red said to know that him being the great grandson of the Nymph (not to mention while simultaneously being the son of the Moon Lord) is a complete joke, no one was supposed to take that seriously in the slightest

(Ivy Whip)

About duke.. they don't say tsunami is obliged and necessary, it's just ONE of the option. it doesn't mean people can live without whole guide if they can beat one boss. for me duke is easier than queen slime and mechs, that's why i beat him as the first hardmode boss (I RECORDED, not lying). it was my FIRST EVER master mode playthrough, i played melee and just needed the flairon. i'm not skilled and couldn't even tank their attacks with my high defense, especially the twins, the duke has fun and consistent pattern. that's also why i did daytime eol before golem, the difficulty is subjective. and i don't consider myself as skilled player, i almost died to the golem several times
Upd.: i didn't cheese him but nothing stops you from it, so it would be even better and won't take any skill
All aside this can be actually useful on get fixed boi seed. If i start it i gonna kill the duke as the fist hm boss for easier kill of mechdusa. That's because he's literally unchanged, i have to dodge him samely almost without hits, but that will save my time for mechdusa arena and more. And many people did that
Upd. 2: about the shrimpy truffle.. i used it to overdamage plantera by putting more offensive and defensive accessories in free slots, i pulled bubble lines with the honey
Upd. 3: i also beat skeletron before the brain of cthulhu / queen bee / deerclops. idk why people find him difficult, i just reforged all to warding via shimmer and used the thorn chakram. he hasn't any difficult attack, all you have is to dodge his homing skulls which is pretty easy even without the slime mount. i find queen bee harder because of fast attacks and debuffs, eater of worlds too because of shooting (almost died to him with post-fishron gear) and especially brain of cthulhu with its 2nd phase where you need to FOCUS
So i genuinely used dark lance for boc and night's edge for qb idk why people don't do that but it's their choice and it's fine
same. i remember almost dying to the golem and lunatic cultist with post-duke and -eol gear. the difficulty is completely subjective and that proves all. also i like how the wiki shows you ALL possible variants of weapons instead of one scheme "always use the terra blade till the end blah blah blah" making the game more variable and interesting, you DON'T HAVE TO use tsunami but you CAN and it's fine
I'm not reading all that
Pretty smart strategy with the duke and skeletron, the golem can be really difficult in the tight place, i'm lazy to use honey or outside arena so for me it was easier to obtain terraprisma and deal with him in 15 seconds, i can say that on get fixed boi the duke is actually EASIER than mechdusa and especially its preps

I don't think they care about preservation that much, they just got used to including all versions because it was actually relevant (when Tmod and the regular game were on different versions for example) and not that intrusive.

Ngl, I'd expect this from fandom, but wiki gg is CRAZY
Yeah, I'm kind of disappointed tbh and I'm wondering if there's anything we can do about it. I absolutely love wikis and open source everything, including information. It's been a few months so maybe things are better? Not sure though.
the only time i craft ivy whip when i got too much jungle material and my hooks was still low tier lmao
2:27 in and i already keep having to remind myself this is the wiki not an ai generated guide
Wait there's no negative luck anymore?! Fuck I've been minmaxxing torches for nothing
yeah, torch luck is only ever positive. The only way you can get negative luck is by killing ladybugs or town NPCs and it's a very brief duration.
Torch luck will always be between 0.0 and 0.2. Using the wrong torches will bring you down from 0.2 to 0.0, but it will never bring you to a negative luck.
@@sorbetcafe also, although it's rather specific, fishing with ladybugs as bait.
The right torches still give you a nice useful luck boost
Negative torch luck was one of the only L updates I can recall them making with the game. they removed it after a few days of getting slammed for it.
Iirc, negative torch luck got removed within the month it was added, since it ruined drop chances for everyone across the board.
The lifeforce one is lowkey true
In hell theres a small chance lifeforce potions can be found
Although do that you need to beat skeleton so it wont work unless you have ungodly luck and somehow have a wooden and gold chest spawn above the dungeon guardians spawn point
2:20 erm 🤓☝, you can actually get lifeforce potions inside golden chests just above the hell layer, though extremely rare and a complete waste to use on a pre-hardmode boss
I didn’t even realize there was a full walkthrough, I occasionally use the class setups page just to know what weapons and armor are available at each stage for classes, what is this 😭
i swear this guide was written by the actual guide from terraria
Except the Guide NPC is actually good.
the disrespect to the guide is insane here. that mf is GOATED.
guide is actually good tho
The guide tells you how to move on through every stage of the game and craft every item, hop off my goat
Stop disrespecting my guide bro tf he do to you
thank you sorbet
the terraria wiki its uhh outdated at times yk
many such cases
MANY SUCH CASES!!
it's not outdated, it's just they are too lazy to remove some of these outdated stuff.
Hey, I gotta tell you about the cosmic comedy of the situation you got me in cus of your funny comment. On the literal day that you wrote this, I watched an episode of a podcast called PST titled "Many Such Cases" in which they talked about the trump copypasta that you have to be referencing in you comment. Also, the fact that we're, you know, in the same comment section.
Maybe I'm looking way too into this, but it's a fun coincidence nonetheless. Or you're my doppelganger or something.
@@Yoruharu so it's outdated
@@connortg5 it's not, it is clearly updated, but most old stuff is still there because they don't want to delete them for some reason.
