The idea that nowadays Phil can’t even hold the sticks anymore is heartbreaking.
It is.
its so sad we lost great drummer
@@MKitchen75 We're blessed to live in the age of recordings, though. I bet to this day his records and videos still inspire little kids to get into music, for instance if they like to sing AND play rhythms.
We can't go to a live Phil Collins gig anymore, but soon enough we'll have AI whipping up a 3D experience of the whole thing and it gets really close to the original greatness. In VR we'll casually walk up the stage and look and listen around. Microsoft or the rather even has a 2D treadmill in development now.
Phil's son plays the drums. He is really good too.
@@mjackson780 oh yes! I’ve seen Nic live, he got his dad’s genes. It was moving to witness Phil watching his son when there were instrumental parts, such as the excerpt from Cinema Show, and he couldn’t have been prouder.
Beautiful to see Phil Collins drumming at speed. He was truly something else.
I love the guy, this was amazing to see and hear, he has a very special sound... but a lot of people don't get it.
Phil’s drumming genius was best demonstrated in the Gabriel era Genesis of the 70’s. Listen to Firth of Fifth and Dancing With The Moonlit Knight from the album Selling England By The Pound. Also, the album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway has some great tracks that show off Phil’s elegant style. Neal Peart was the Professor and John Bonham was a legend, but Phil Collins is my favorite drummer.
The joy of these musicians ..no ego..all about music!!!
Their Genesis duet in Dallas is mind blowing. Hearing Phil and Chester play their drum duet live was amazing and they brought down the house in the Genesis concerts.
Chester may be the most underrated drummer ever...
Really, you have to see Phils and Chester drum duet from the Invisible Touch-Tour from 1987 in the Wembley stadium. Inkluding the Los Endos Part! You won't be disappointed... Trust me...
Greetings from Germany ✌🏼
Definitely, and the Genesis We Can't Dance tour of 1992 👌
It was a great show, I was there for a night, the duet was great into los endos on the dvd ,shame that they didn’t include the “in the cage “ sequence on it,anyone know why ?
This was so interesting. I knew nothing about drumming technique. Now I know a tiny, tiny bit. I know that I prefer the sound with the bottom head. Sounds rounder to me. I've always thought that drummng requires so much physical agility. I can't get my head around using both hands and both feet. And then people like Phil Collins and Don Henley would also be singing! Mind blowing. Thanks for the lesson.
What I discovered in technique was that drummers use all sorts of sounds to find a riff. I dated a FABULOUS drummer some years ago and he wanted to listen to my heartbeat. He then created a beautiful sound in one of his tunes using my heartbeat. It’s almost magical!
I’m a pianist and classical composer. People should just open their ears to the sounds around them and they’ll hear music in all things from wheat blown by the wind to the birds chirping. It’s all music.
An interesting movie that helps people listen differently is “August Rush”. It’s a phenomenal eye opener and an amazing example of how different genres artists come together to love through music.
Phil Collins was an master of the hi-hat. Check the middle eight of "The Battle of Epping Forest" from "Selling England by the Pound": absolutely incredible
Phil Collins my favourite rock drummer. A while back I saw an interview with Phil where he said he could never do double stroke rolls because of a wrist injury he had when he was a kid.
I got to see them do a duet in 1992 during the Genesis "The Way We Walk" tour. So amazing live.
Phil Collins & Chester Thompson are just so incredible it's hard to explain how brilliant they are!! Best ever to listen to. What a sensational singer/drummer Phil Collins was in Genesis too! Never forgotten!!!!!!!!
Love this! Two legends!
Thank you, Jarvis! Love to hear your interpretations in regards to Phil and Chester!
I have a blast from the past before your time his name was Buddy Rich a big name in the 60`s-early 70`s. At one of his shows I can`t remember which one he played while having a heart attack in the middle of his performance and still completed the show before going to the hospital immediately after. This guy would rather die at his drums... that is dedication and a real monster. Peace and brother love to you and all. Great reaction, thanks.
You bring so much knowledge...u lived your reaction to the master Neil Peart....Phil has retired from the drums but he was blessed
Phil was my initial inspiration to become a drummer.
Nice reaction. It's satisfying to see someone who actually knows what the hell he's talking about.
Live in paris Phil Collins un très très grand batteur😊
The drum-battles with Phil and Chester are legendary and Louis Conte is adding something really special.
Heard Phil & Chester together in 1978, 1985, 1987 and 2007, all fantastic gigs.
Chester is touring now with Unitopia ... looking forward to see him on stage again in september 2023. ❤
Loved seeing them both on stage. Phil went back and forth for different songs....
You gotta check out
A conversation with two stools..... just awesome...
So many don't realize
You had two sets of drums on stage.
Cheers
Ever since the first time Chester joined the Genesis Live lineup and then Phil Collins solo tours, it has always been a staple that those two have some kind of duet jam in their shows. It changes tour to tour and sometime amended during the tour but it always lead into a featured song in the set list. There is even one video where they start off on their drum kits and end up playing/drumming on a pair of stools using the seat pads as the drum and other hardware near by.
That's in Rome
At the end of the duet, they were starting into Collins' song Something Happened On The Way To Heaven.
YES!!! You are the first one that I've come across to do a reaction to this epic performance of this set. Thank you❤ Stay safe
Chester was playing with Weather Report when Phil heard a lick he dis , Then Called Chester and asked him to join Genius, Chester also played with Frank Zappa
This is pure bliss .
Wow that was so interesting! Looks like the same concert (Paris?) where Phil did the now viral version of In The Air Tonight. What an epic concert that must have been.
It is the same concert. The drum trio opened the concert.
I loved your reaction!
You know Phil Collins hand-picked Chester Thompson to be Genesis' tour drummer? The story is, Phil loved Chester's playing in Weather Teport.
Incredible that this is neither Phil nor Chester in their prime.....but they sound fantastic.
That’s from the First Final Farewell Tour back in 2004. One of the greatest live gigs ever (not least for the inimitable performance of In The Air Tonight to open the second half), but one thing that stands out is that you can tell when it’s a drummer’s audience. European audiences have an infuriating habit of clapping on the one and three, but the crowd at that show were hitting the groove all the way through.
U a nerd for drums. I LOVE IT! Thank you. ❤
One thing I don't see mentioned here is that this is a "musical" drum solo. You can nearly sing along it once you hear it a few times. This is what, to me, always made a difference with Phil (and a very-very few other drummers). Is not a display of technique, is always about adding to the song and make the drum part as important and unique that rounds the song into what it finally becomes. There are a few drummers that have this. Imagine the Police without Copeland? Toto without Porcaro? They would have never ended up with those songs. Same thing with Phil and Genesis. Very rare species and so noticeable when you think: If they had another drummer, would they come up with a similar jewel? I don't think so. My deepest respects to the -still undervalued- Phil.
The perfection❤❤❤❤😊
Two of the very best right there.
I saw one live with both drumming at the Tower Theater in Philly. 77 or 79ish. Top 5 groups for me. Maybe even top 3.
That's my man Phil!!!
I remember once Phil was asked what new drummers would do and exercise, he said, "just play so hard as you can, always" haha, downside is, he has troubles now hearing, the cost of playing expressive drums without ear protection for many years. From his 5th birthday, how about that? But still my favorite by far. I think this concert was the farewell concert in Paris 2004? Btw, did you know Phil hates cymbals on his kit? The second kit, the Gretch upstairs, doesn't have cymbals on it. I think at the time with Genesis this was an issue to some band members, but hey Pink Floyd members had also issues between each other and musical choices. I think that's why these are so great?
There’s a version of this drums duet on one the Genesis live albums that I far prefer to this one. A bit shorter but the ‘exchanges’ are very well worked out. They’ve been doing this duet from back in the 80s and there are several versions.
Its like if you ask Hades to play drums for a disney track^^ Sick.. love it...... Phils plays the drums like a disney movie
Nice way to open a concert..these guys will keep playing for next 2 hours....its a lot of energy to put out..night after night..this is phil solo group tour *
Live at Wembly is fantastic.
Check out Phil (and Bill Bruford) on mid-70s Brand X if you have not already.
Believe it or not their 1987 Wembly Drum Duet is the best version Don’t know why so many recommend this one over the BEST one. ☝️
You should check out there older drum thing that’s what they called it . Genesis in the 70s and early 80s that was something to see and here
2 Best in the Business
Check out some of the duets early 80s. You will love. They use a lic from Zappa.
And this was when Phil was older.....watch him in his prime.
At this point, Chester had worked hard to create Phil's sound. And the percussionist knew hot to "fill" for Phil. This was all Phil. I love this, but mainly because of Phil.
Subbed for great info besides the reaction on the video (which was great anyways) Thanks man.
These guys are old guys but amazing
Phil was 53 at this concert!
I play because of PC. and idk,it just seems so many drummers today Sit on their drums, where as i prefer to have the Toms at about eye level. Idk if one ways better, but,i kinda like the "old school"? set up more visually and for myself
I think the word you were looking for to represent the consistent component throughout for us to "latch onto" was continuity but if not try that because I think it fits. I do that all the time the words right there but I can't pull it up and I hate that
a random request, just found ur channel, hey. lol BUT i would love love love if you can react to So Hyang. Shes got perfect pitch, and just amazing belt. Her rearrangement for covers are insane and even assisted by the artist who made the song themselves sometimes. I feel like the best introduction for her would be her rendition of Arirang Alone a Korean folk song. She is Korean so this song is in her native language and its. just. a journey. THEN with her English covers, my personal favorite is Bridge over Troubled Water and You Raise Me Up. pick your poison LOL I know I'm not a patron but you'd def get an influx of new viewers from her followers! Have a nice day!
Very good for a 70 year old, now.
Hey Jarvis, can you explain what you're saying in 05:33? I've been trying to study that drum roll but unable to find the exact same method for that roll :(
You should check out the drumming did with Brand X, his jazz fusion group, which he loved more, but Genesis paid the bills, so Brand X had to go. But his playing with them was great.
They are very close friends
I know you understand this I can only feel it .
Phil and Chester aside, Luis Conte is one of the best percussionists around!
I think we don't really care about your reaction but we like Phil And Chester
I read where Phil can't even pick up drum sticks now days.
I would like to see You to react to some african drummers, when they are "controlled" by A dancer, Zaouli dance its amacing.
Dude, do you know Ryan Brown?
So glad to see you back, but can never be sorry you're working. This senior has been listening to Phil Collins for many years, back when he was with Genesis. Would love for you to react to 'In the Air Tonight' ua-cam.com/video/IeDMnyQzS88/v-deo.html.
Still would very much like to see you react to PTX 'Recording of Evergreen.' I learn so much when a professional reacts to this.
watch cesar from golden earring live radar love long ver.
Its in the foot work.
Please check out the Drum Solo of *Karen Carpender* she was a great Talent !!!
IMHO Phil never got the drumming respect he deserves. Everyone talks so much about Neil Peart (RIP) who is good to be sure, but got way more attention than Phil!
Frog Leap Studios, please.
Here's something a little heavier, but it's the same concept and lots of talent on one stage -- even if you don't do a reaction video - you might wanna check this out - it's pretty epic -- ua-cam.com/video/qQElvCFN8M0/v-deo.html
figured you might be interested - and would be interesting to see your take on this - take it easy out there! #jbcrew
What is happening is this, Phil stops drumming and starts to sing after the drumming
What is your opinion of Ric Lee?
The Hobbit : ua-cam.com/video/1dD0Es7ANsU/v-deo.html
Even though he can't perform like this any more, don't give up hope, His son Nic is almost a clone as far as talent goes.
you may be the pro drummer buts thats phil collins....jedi knight
Is it just me or is Phil Collins looking a little like Dana White's Mini-Me?
So the gel is to Drums what auto-tune is to vocals discriminates against everything Beyond a certain threshold is that kind of what it does like a buffer or moderator or something?
I'm not not a drummer unless you count novice air drummer so explain it for the non-drummers who can't relate but appreciate the talent of the lakes of Neil Peart Danny Carey Phil Collins Bruford and all the greats so we can understand enough to talk as if we know what we're saying LOL
you should check luke holland's collab with polyphia ... very cool video ua-cam.com/video/9DWabPqo2-w/v-deo.html
Bro please react to polyphia playing god
Hel he is way better then chad smith
Your drums are flat, not “spin doctors” flat but flat. I play the same.
pointless, go listen to the heart of the sunrise by yes or phill colins with bill bruford from 1977, that was better
