      Honestly think that GW's default schemes for their posterboys kinda suck. Space Marines? Ultramarines dont really attract that much imho. Lumineth? Terrible default scheme. Stormcast? Also lame. Then you see same miniatures in some other color and go like woaaaah dude this is awesome.

    Nice scheme! I love addition of battle damage. Always looks good on light colored models. I'm using quite a bit of battle damage on my Space Wolves currently (sometimes I mess up with too wide line, but I don't care as much since those are tabletop minis, not a competition entries).
    I think that you could've added gold to right arm of the mini, but for army project it's ok to skip it.
    I really like your series about army building/painting. Andy's LRL are stunning, and so are your StD's.

    I LOVE this color scheme. I need to figure out how to do this without an airbrush because I do not have one / know how to use one at the moment. It seems like the best paint jobs are the ones that have an airbrush.

    • @cultofpaint
      @cultofpaint  3 роки тому +4

      An airbrush can certainly speed things up and is also really useful when a model has a lot of large flat surfaces. You could still get a very nice armour colour spraying it white then using a contrast paint grey. Then just follow the other steps.

    • @lordbiscuitthetossable5352
      @lordbiscuitthetossable5352 3 роки тому

      Plus an airbrush isn't that expensive; I was able to get a cheap airbrush and compression for about £50 which could potentially save a healthy amount of time in the long run.

    My only gripe here is the wildly assorted range of paints needed. Even using a paint conversion list I found that the paints I had available were up to 5.42 mathematical points different than the ones used in the vid. All the same, I will probably end up ordering the exact paints from this video cuz it's a badass scheme that looks great.

      Tamiya white is essential. All others you could substitute for something similar. We enjoy using lots of different paints.

  • @philgee486
    @philgee486 3 роки тому +1

    Another lovely example of using a thin oil wash over gloss varnish for specific controlled effect, but this time because it's over white you get a gentle filter over the whole armour as well as the detail enhancing of a subtle pinwash. Such a great effect.
    Now I love Payne's grey for cool shadows and use it in mixes for that probably more than any other paint except warm white/buff. I've whole forces where that's one of the key unifying elements
    Seeing that filter effect though and being really fond of warm white armours, I wonder what colour(s) you'd have used to make a warm filter/wash????

    • @philgee486

How long roughly do I need to wait after appying it to go back in and do some spot highlights with my normal acrylic paint?

    • @cultofpaint
      @cultofpaint  2 роки тому

      Nice one! Depending on the oil paint you've bought it can be anything from a few hours to 24+, I'd leave it to dry naturally for a while then get the hairdryer on it. If it's not playing ball you can always varnish over the top of the oil and then paint acrylic over that.

      I leave it overnight. But you can sue a hairdryer to speed it up and once touch dry you can varnish to seal it and then carry on painting if you are in a hurry.

    So I tried oil wash but maybe I thinned it too much? Pigment separated on flat parts making it look grainy/muddy

    • @cultofpaint
      @cultofpaint  3 роки тому +1

      That can happen, it just takes some experimenting. I've found a good quality oil paint makes a difference, and if you are making a very thin wash then not to flood the miniatures with it, but apply it carefully.

      You could base the entire model in the tamiya blue with a brush, then carefully use a white spray can from above, like a zenithal highlight. It won't be anywhere near as smooth though, there really is no substitute for an airbrush.

      It’s thin Vallejo model colour black, so some of the white is showing through from underneath making it grey in some areas.

    I love this scheme and I am going to use it on some stormcast, but looking at some of the older models that have two layers of cloth colors I am really stuck on what to use, can anyone help? It seems like the burgundy from the leather would be one, but I am not sure what other color to use (mostly talking about things like sequitors that have a tabard and a cloak)

    I can never get my oil wash to look like this. I use the exact same brands and also gloss varnish my model. But I just put the wash on and initially it looks good and settles in the recesses but after a few minutes it just kinda runs down the model and almost all of the effect is lost. I am kinda at the point where I don't think this will ever work. I just don't understand how people do it.
