More and more I've been really enjoying sponging on colors for texture. I feel like it's a really undervalued technique, possibly even more than drybrushing, so love seeing it here. Great video, would love a yellow shield for some Bad Moonz
Veeery cool ideas and tips. I like the second the most, and the sponge tech is a good way to build contrast without drybrush. Love it. Once i get my hands on them, i think i will go for a sickly yellow-green for the shields. I like a lot the "bad moon" looks and the "venom fang" greenish (from the total war npc faction of greenskins near southern realms). So i think i will try black spray as basecoat, and then the sponge with iron warriors metal followed by nurglin green, washed with diluted plaguebearer flesh and then rescued back with the nurglin green. The metallics of the eyes and fangs i guess i will go with iron warriors, highlighted with ironbreaker and then shaded with either nuln oil with touches of coelian greenshade to still have a little green tint to it, but keeping them darker than the rest of the shield, with a colder vibe.
Thanks for that technique of sponging on the reds, it seems like a really fast method to get a very nice result. I'm in charge of painting up the Dominion box for the store I work at and I'll be using this to get these models painted up as quick as I can.
@@cultofpaint I was thinking of painting my Kruleboyz with an albino colored skin, and then with the blue shields you did here. I'm thinking like Azog's skin tone from the Hobbit movies. Any chance you have a video on Albino flesh or know of one you could recommend? I looked but didn't see one. Was thinking about just basing them pallid Witch Flesh, and then just going over them with Gryph Charger Grey Contrast. Not sure what I'd use to highlight from there. Thank you! No worries if you don't have time to respond :)
Thanks for showing off some alternatives and how you got them done. I'm a fan of the box art but not sure how I feel about the shields in red so am looking for some other examples while I wait for my box to come in.
@@cultofpaint Exactly, too rich yet grimy to just use on shields, test model coming up, I'm even considering a necron test with models I'd modded to be damaged/badly preserved. Then dark bronze for the non-armour bits
For me, the second one nails it, also, could you tell which colours do they put in the box art for painting the shields? I would really like to know it, also for skin, thank you so much!
I don't, but if you are on Twitter then try to follow some of the eavy metal painters. they are usually really helpful with listing what paints they used for certain jobs.
Lovely tutorial, mate. Im thinking about how to get a yellow color, cause i think there is no contrast yellow that goes yellow instead of orange / brown.
They look really cool together to be honest, and frankly, orks aren't supposed to be super organised in the fluff, so I would personally go with a variety of different colours for the shields, it would certainly make your mob stand out more than any other with uniform shields
Man, these look so awesome. The shields are definitely one of the most visually exciting aspects of the new models. I want to paint the shields in a bright yellow scheme, but I am new to painting and the challenge is quite intimidating. That said, how would you go about doing a yellow scheme on these shields?
this might sound really daft but is there a sponge brand you recommend? the ones i get from tesco are quite dense and don't give a great effect. looking for a more porous one, if that makes sense!
My only worry is that red is the same colour as the box art, but the red is my favorite followed by the orange. The blue while amazingly done, seems too clean and pristine.
Love the colors, especially the blue :-)
The blue shield is easily my favorite, it really shows where contrast paints can be put to their best use.
Right? that blue is so good!
I love much these throw back to the old school shields. The blue looks really nice- would love to see how yellow looks on them too
You really nailed it with the blue one, inspired to do my own
Do it!
I did the Ctan on my silent king like this it came out awesome

Ditto, big fan of the sponge. I did yellow one but it wasn't quite right so left it out, will keep tweaking it.
I love the mix Khorne Red and Evil Sunz Scarlet, I will highlight with Wild Rider Red and stop at this result for the red part.
Really nice. The blue shield is beautiful. I'm thinking of trying yellow for my own

The blue is hands down my favorite. 💙 All the other are great also but that blue is so fitting.

That’s great, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!
This is a fantastic video! I'm in love with that blue shield!
Yeah I think that's my fave too

The face of the middle red one there at the end accurately summarizes what it feels like to miss your morning coffee
Like looking in a mirror

Love the red one, after watching more of your videos I’m really tempted to try new techniques like the oils and experiment
Do it! It’s good fun.
that metallic approach of blue on a yellow tone instead of the blue, ufff would love to see that
Those shields are going "Blaaaaagh!" at us. Great paint schemes! :)
They is a lot of footage left out of me boogaboogabooga them at the camera..
Gorgeous, especially the blue, really tempted to try it for armour on non-orc models
Would look real nice on a larger area

Seeing the sponge in real time is probably one of my favorite demonstrations!
It’s a fun technique
Love the blue, keep up the great work
Thanks, will do!
Awesome video this I wasn't going to go for dominion but these new orcs the more I see them the more I want them
Feel the same way about the orcs. Seeing them and building them has really changed my opinion!
The Blue one looks really incredible and basically was my plan for painting the Kruleboyz, Blue being the lucky colour of Orruks/Orks.
Do it!
These are absolutely fantastic
Thanks!
Was so looking forward to this!
We best get some more painted up then!
T-shirts with “base coated with decayed metal” coming soon? 👌😂
They go well with the Sansodor caps!
Gr8 job my man....could you throw together how to make a yellow one as well? Will ne trying more of the "bad moon" wibe
Thanks, yes I will.

That blue shield is excellent. I think I might be using that technique. It seems lucky.
the luckiest of all
Epic, was just watching another one of your vids and this popped up lol
Nice!
I love these!
Thanks!

Hey loved the video, have you tried doing a yellow shield yet? If so how did you go about it?
Coming soon!

So nice!
I've seen a lot of whining about these new shield designs, I think they're great
Gorgeous.
Thank you! 😊

I’ve a bunch in a tub, dish sponges, blister pack foam etc. But most of the time I use the left over bits from KR pick and pluck carry cases.
Im planing to base these kruleboyzs in a Icy environment, what color of shield would you use??
Loads of choices. But I guess blue is the obvious one
Please show us a yellow one!
It’s coming!
Does anyone know when these are coming out?
Pre order 19th June, release 3rd July

You could certainly grunge up the blue one more, i would if it was for my army.
how do orruks make such detailed shields? there ORRUKS for sigamrs sake they BARELY know metalsmithing
These are……”smart” orruks.
@@cultofpaint the "smart: in quotes makes me think that you just mean threating people or stealing them or something like that
