Washing Silver to turn it Gold!
Many more painting tips, tricks, and hacks, to get your mini looking amazing, at super-speed!
In today's video, we're tackling more Warhammer Age of Sigmar Dominion box minis, it's back to the Vindictors, which we're painting as part of the 'Hallowed Knights' Stormhost/sub-faction. The Hallowed Knights are known for their devotion to sigmar, and shiny silver armour... However, we thought a more 'Knightly' well kept, but well-used steel approach would look great on them, and here it is!

The blue that was added to the wash for the armour adds so much character 👌
Yeah it does mate, all about the little tints and tricks!
Mixing paint with your shades is insane 😮
I've been using Nazdreg Yellow contrast over Leadbelcher to get a nice, rich, deep gold. It's how I paint my Stormcast and the trim on my marines.
I just started stormcast and the tried this method over vallejo silver...very nice gold.
That is how I do the trim on my Iron Warriors. It's a great worn look.
Awesome 👍 I have been waiting for this one, to help with my Dominion box. Great tutorial.
You're most welcome, dude ❤
I love dry brushing; it's so satisfying
Couldn't agree more, you paint happily at peace... And then you have a badass model, what more could you want?!
awesome, one of my favs you've done!
I love this. This will now be my theme for my storm cast externals 😍😍😍😍
Yess! Enjoy dude, it's a very fun scheme to paint, sure you'll have a great time getting them prepped :)
Really outstanding. I do love your scheme for the gold and the scheme for the leather, I will be trying to incorporate these techniques.
Amazing, Tim, you'll have loads of fun, and hopefully be surprised by the speed especially!
Awesome Artis, always enjoy your videos.
Cheers, Chuck!
Awesome!!! Thank you. Very motivational. Now I have to try this recipe out.
You'll love it man, it's such fun to do!
Awesome, as usual. 👍🏻
Wow that blued armour is gorgeous!
Thanks man, solid combo of colours between Kantor and teclis! The wash does a little work, too :)
I really like this. I Bought my first sce and I was looking for good but easy paint scheme and this is great
I’d love to see your take on the Astral Templars colour scheme.
Love the tutorials as ever. 🤩
Thanks, Matt, we'll be doing a poll of the top voted ones previously requested in our community post, fingers crossed they made it!
Having said that, I do love painting SCE, and we are definitely looking to build up a nice gallery of tutorials for them over time, regardless of what wins the vote :)
Stunning work again! And the basis for my new ScE army now... 😁
Yess! Happy to have helped, please share your progress with us :)
Excellent. Ok I've found my colour scheme, thanks!
Enjoy your content so much! I am officially starting my first ever AOS army, (any miniature army for that matter). Have everything built and primed but lost the nerve tonight to break open the newly acquired Artis Opus brush set and dive in. Maybe tomorrow. Thanks for all the tips and tricks.
Wow Paul, you're going to have so much fun! Thanks very much for your support, let us know in any vids if there's anything you need any help with, YT isn't great for ongoing convo notifications :)
Love the color scheme! I like how you breakdown each step in the process so it’s not that intimidating to try. Once you’ve completed the Stormcast in the Dominion box would love to see your take on a Soulblight army. A++++ job with this video!
Thanks, man :). I actually have some stuff of my own from a while back, as well as the ones I did for the channel more recently, I love their aesthetic!
Wow.... amazing
Dam it … now I’m going to have to buy them too 😫 great as always Byron 👍
Apologies, again! 😉
Would absolutely love to see this guy hit with some streaking grime!
:D don't tempt me, Frodo!
Nice this is my AOS army of choice need to pick up my Dominion Box
Perfect! You won't regret picking up the box, it's such good value, and the minis are just a joy :)
@@ArtisOpus I brought the dry brush set from you as well working on Black Templars then Dominion box.Huge difference between using Army painter and yours. Much softer and way less chalky.
I just started warhammer painting and because i didn't have any gold paint i just used gold leaf. it worked really well!
Great tutorial! With each new tutorial I want to start that SCE force! (and I still can't decide on my LRL color scheme...).
Take these colours, and apply them to the LRL? Plenty of opportunity for it
Knights excelsior next please!
Hotly requested! :D
I have also used snakebite leather (heavily diluted 1:8 with contrast medium) over silver for a lighter gold (1 or two thin coats to suit) then aged/weathered with reikland fleshtone. Using it on House Terryn Warglaves (baby Knights)
Ahh, over metallics the shine wouldn't be an issue, I can 100% see that working!
Adding this to my Necron playlist ;)
:D very transferable! Enjoy
@@ArtisOpus Getting that black armour right is tough! Going to need some more Warriors to practice on ;)
As ever. Top phrase used by British painters
great job pal :)
Cheers, dude!
I absolutely wsnt to see it with streaking grime! I actually wondering how to paint mine but i really want a grimdark style
Well, it's kind of 1 step grim-dark, so you could do something, maybe just put a bit more paint in the wash stages, not make it so shiny, then streaking grime the lot, and add blood?
7 in the morning on a Saturday, better than Saturday morning cartoons!
That's true
But sleep still felt more important. (-:
Gah! It's not the first time, and probably won't be the last :| eternal confusions with numbers...
@@ArtisOpus No worries! (-: Just move it to 09 for the future and i'm all game :D
@@ArtisOpus also add the duck tales theme tune.
Can I just say I called the gold wash in the last video 😋
You absolutely can! :D Love it!
Ah hah… this is the Grey Knight look I was looking for.
:D
Please paint Yndrasta! I would love to see a tutorial on her. I'm scared to paint mine haha because she is such a big and important mini haha
Oh dude, my saga with her will continue, have no worry :D
Really enjoying your video's, dry brushing really is a great and relatively simple way of getting incredible results.
Are you planning on doing more AoS miniatures and have you done Yndrasta?
Id love to see how youve done the wings.
This helped me a lot! I've applied this method on a Knight Hospitaller from Infinity. It gave me the result I was hoping for within moments and I actually finished the mini 95%. I immediately grabbed a Teutonic Knight and also nearly finished him. Drybrushing like this cured me of my painter's blockade, so thank you big time!
Yesss! So glad to have been of assistance :). It is all about finding a technique that works for you, that you enjoy. Motivation is 90% of the battle, so whatever fuels it is the answer!
Any questions just let us know in another comment, YT isn't great for ongoing convo notifications.
Looks great, if i had to add anything too it i would of given him a more weather'd look.
Streaking Grime is calling!
Hi! Thank you for your awesome tutorials 🙏 I'd like to make a suggestion if I may: could you make a couple of videos showing how to tackle Craftworld Eldar and Drukhari using your techniques? These factions seem to be totally neglected at this point! 🙂 thank you in advance
Hey man, I'd approach it exactly like our imperial knight video, check it out and let us know there if you've got any specifics (probably wouldn't streaking grime them, but up until that point it should be perfect :))
Great work! Do you have any tips on painting metallics on T'au battlesuits?
Reletively new subscriber here... And I love it already. You have a lovely enthusiasm without being over the top all the time, silky smooth voice and nice to look at ✌️ I'm a warhammer Fantasy player (of the 8th edition variety), do you paint any square bases?
Looking forward to more anyway 😁
Hey dude, thanks! (y)! I don't paint any square bases any more, plenty of fantasy minis though, glad you enjoy the content, thanks for your kind words
Will you be doing a Bastian Cathalos paint job once he's released? I'd love to see your version!
I'd be inclined to just pick a stormcast scheme like the ones we've done tutorials for, and approach him like that, cool model though!
I really like how you made gold. I wonder if i can do something similar but using abaddon black and nuln oil to paint metallic black armor.
Or black templar! Absolutely, dude :)
@@ArtisOpus thanks.
Love the look i got close to yours but i don't have all the paint
Good stuff dude, method over recipe! 👏
This is going to be my new painting scheme for stormcast, thankyou so much :). I am curious even though I won't do it, what do you think that gold wash over silver would look like over the majority of armour, such as the hammers of sigmar style?
Can be fine mate, can even involve purple washes/constrasts etc, and it looks insane
Hmmmmm so I primed my mini's with Army Painter Platemail. Should I re-prime black or just roll with it following your guide. I really love the non-gold golds! Looks awesome!
Mhhm, I'd prefer black, but you could just wash twice, then rock on with the drybrushing (you may need to make the wash a little stronger with paint). Good luck, let us know how it goes :)
@@ArtisOpus First off good luck on your army build. Hopefully you'll have it done before your tournament.
I layered on Nuln oil to bring that silver down and used the silver mixed with blue/indigo blue. I am impressed with how well it turned out.
Looking forward to seeing how you do the Banner for the Vindicators Celestial Vindicators, Hallowed Knights and the Knight Vexillor banner.
Do the products you sell come with "how to use" instructions? I like the dampening pad and the mat.
Any chance of a bronze/copper tutorial with the d series please? I seem to be struggling with the colour modulation for them, Cheers :)
We'll definitely do it at some point in the future, I need to work out whether there is a different method, or if it is just doing gold, and washing it differently :D
I'm using citadel stormhost silver, which I think is a bit more glittery than the one you use.
Could well be mate, maybe less fine pigments?
I know you love it, but when did Huldra Blue become a GW / citadel colour?
Hey man, I've already primed my guys white. Would you be able to recommend any variation to the above to reflect that?
Thanks!
Where do we get hold of that texred painting pallet
Do you think this technique would work if I were to finish the armor with a contrast paint through the airbrush to give it a colour tint?
Hey man, absolutely, you'll perhaps miss a bit of the depth, but you'll gain some consistency, remember you can use a varnish at the end too (conveniently through the airbrush) if it knocks back the sheen too much for you :).
Let us know how it goes!
Just a heads up, in the paint list you say that huldra blue is citadel paints instead of scale 75...
Thanks for the tutorial though, great as always
Cheers dude! Woops! Glad you liked it 👍
how would you make it brighter? I'm going to try a more silvery colour, and was thinking of thinning down teclis blue with laminar medium to create a light blue gloss/ wash. Do you think this would work? or should I buy some Drakenhof to shade with
also why did you mix nuln + black + blue, rather than using Drakenhoff for that step? Just preference of colour? I find drakenhof to be a tad too dark somtimes.
Teclis blue with a little medium should work fine dude, you can always mix it with a wash if you prefer the colour.
Preference and cohesion, they're already in the paint job, so it helps the wash out a lot, even matters less when you screw up, so higher quality and more forgiving:)
Who shall Slay the Grey? ONLY THE FAITHFUL!
:D Faithful VGA Silver
Can the model colour silver be subbed in for game air silver or is there something specific about the game air silver that has a better behaviour?
Absolutely dude, just take a little care if it's brand new, as they start fairly 'wet' (don't mop your brush with loads of wet paint!).
Im just loving this technique and trying it. Do you Ship your Products to the USA?
Hey, Bobby, we absolutely do! Everything on our site :). Thanks for the kind words
What’s that wierd sponge thingie you used at the beginning , not the brush the thing in the cup?
It's our dampening pad, plenty of info here, and in a lot of our other tutorials, it introduces a small amount of moisture to increase quality, smoothness, and protect brushes: ua-cam.com/video/kxuY2NXeI2M/v-deo.html
after watching all your videos about gold, what technique would you use to paint a mini like a rogal dorn, silver + wash, gold + wash like with the vampire or the technique you used with the stormcast?
Difficult question, Miguel! I think a big old mix, maybe starting gold, highlighting silver, then washing for depth :)
@@ArtisOpus
thank you very much and keep up the good work
Are Stormcast kind of like Space Marines? As in if I paint them this way are there special rules for it or purely aesthetics?
There are sub-faction type stormchambers, some have rules and some don't, but,.especially in AOS it's common yo just do whatever you think looks coolest, not worrying about rules
I have a question regarding the texture pallet, does it have to be primed? And do you just keep priming over what you've done previously?
It doesn't have to be, I do re-prime mine occasionally though, often between projects, to make sure that they just have what's relevant to what I'm painting (I've kept ones for certain armies in the past, too :))
@@ArtisOpus Thanks for the information and replying. Mine comes in the mail today. 🙏🏽
this has inspired me to make one of my stormcast dudes into a stormwind knight theme from warcraft! I really like the way the gold turned out. Also, do the streaking grime! be brave. it's not like stormacst's are in short supply :P And if it doesn't turn out the way you want we will all have the opportunity to learn something!
Maybe I should do a future video where I take 3 previous 'finished' paint jobs and streaking grime them... Scary! :D
@@ArtisOpus oooh that sounds like fun. Sounds somewhat stressful on your end haha
Question. Do you have an separate moisture sponge for metals?
Hey dude, I don't - if you let it dry fully (don't leave it to fester with the lid on) between sessions you shouldn't have any issues with cross contamination :)
@@ArtisOpus awesome 😁. Will try that. Haw a second batch of brushes on the way now. Want some dedicated to metalics 🙂.
Do you drybrush silver after every step? Your edges seem shinier than mine
Can do :), are you using the same silver? Let me know in another comment, YT is awful for conversation notifications, I miss a lot of replies to replies.
What did you 7se for a wash
Hey dude, wash section starts here: ua-cam.com/video/ILh1m2iaysw/v-deo.html :)
You called turning silver into gold hacking. I think people call that alchemy
Like a less impressive than normal midas ^_^
