In the official video on Turtle Wax's site, they say to wipe down the lens each time before you move to the next sanding pad. That might be why some people's lights got messed up, because you need to wipe it down each time or you could damage the lens.
Wish I would have read your comment and went to the official website. My headlight is destroyed. I only did one and it's a fogged up mess, so I came inside to watch YT before moving on to the other one. I'll leave it alone and try something else.
Tried this yesterday on 2006 mini Cooper S worked as advertised. Used the craftsman one before but they require a using a drill and it cost $22. Thought I would I try this one. No tools needed for this which is perfect. $9 for some headlights that looks brand new ain’t bad at all. I will see how long it last with yellowing. But overall happy with the results.
Because the headlamps on my 2007 |Golf TDI had a bit more oxidisation I started of by wet sanding with 600 grit, then 1000, then 1500 and finally 2000. I ensured to rinse the headlamp with fresh water after each sanding to remove any of the residue. After using the 2000 grit I then rinsed off the headlamp and then applied some panel wipe to thoroughly clean the lense. I then applied the clarifying compound and then buffed dry. I did this around 3 times. Ensuring to thoroughly buff dry each time. After that I applied the acrylic base coat. The headlight came out really good. I was quite pleased.
When you are wet sanding with the pads...use a lot of water rinsing the lens... otherwise you'll transfer grit from one to the next...great product. Don't expect the yellowing to go away completely, some of that is headlight burn from the inside.
all I can say is, make sure the lens is perfectly clear and smooth (like new) before applying base and finish. If not, you got nothing but a dull headlight!
Thanks for the note, Dalton Universal. Ours are looking a biz hazy again. So, while this definitely works, I don't think it's a long-term solution. Good luck.
I used one of these kits on a Ford Edge.... one headlight was FAR worse than the other. One required no sanding, and the other needed two rounds to make it match the first one. Is it "new" looking??? not quite, but at 5 feet away, it looks close to new.

Also, took before and after pictures and there’s a huge difference I promise. So for what’s it worth under $9 that’s perfect! I’m so happy it looks Car Dealer material!😎
It was smooth sailing until the final clear. It didn’t apply smoothly whatsoever, then it “clumped” up. After giving it some time to cure as the directions advised, it looked the same. I ended up wiping it off with a rag and the result was good enough for me. Note: i may have had this issue due to the base clear not fully drying but I did it at night and it looked dry, but may not have been
I just used this on my 2004 accord 6 speed. It works absolutely beautifully. My lights almost look new. It's not perfect. But it will do for the meantime until I can buy new housings
I used one kit to do both headlights. It worked fairly well. The results weren't permanent, however, and the haze began coming back in a few months. I suspect taking more time and being slightly more aggressive could produce longer lasting results.
Ive just used this kit on my 04 Lexus rx300 and although its done a great job, I'm not sure itll last long just as other methods don't either. Just buy the cheapest kit or just use whitening toothpaste and a bit of elbow grease every two or three months 👍
Just bought some from Autozone and I’m impressed! 😎 I was skeptical but the sales guy said it’s popular and I’m happy with it. Prolly have to do it again in a few months but no biggie. Better than spending $150+ each housing.
So it's not necessary, but the reason to do it is to avoid any of the sandpaper hitting the cars paint during the sanding process. None of those chemicals in the kit will harm the cars paint. The blue tape he used is just generic painters tape designed for houses, but will work fine in this case. It's not designed for cars, but wont do any harm. If you do use tape it would just have to be this blue painters tape or auto specific masking tape. Any other types of tape WILL damage the car. Or you could just be careful when sanding to avoid using tape at all.
I did it on my 01 rx300 and it looks amazing. He did it very sloppy and only half assed the instructions but if you really put a little care it will look brand new.
@@Unknown-uy6mj I think the wipes are some type of sealer to use after you sand and clean the plastic lens. There are other ways of accomplishing all of this, which, I believe, involve a sanding pad on a drill or orbital sander and then wiping on or spraying on a sealer. So, if you can find some type of sealer liquid that doesn't use wipes, you may be in business.
I’m gonna sage everyone the discouragement of trying all the rebuffing of any headlight. Go to your local Walmart and they will literally spend 4-5 hours with pneumatic sandpaper wheels tape up the whole front of the car with clear plastic protection and take all the oxidation off the lenses and recoat it with professional clear all for $25 a set!!
