@@YoungDirtyMexicanOfficially carb vs fuel injection is your big question. I'm selling a 2010 883 right now with 14300 ish on it full led all around with load equalizer engine guard as well as swing arm bag. All new tires about a month or 2 old all service up to date. Runs like a champ. Previous owner dropped it at some point bent the clutch lever but everything is rock solid zero issues in the years I've owned it other than neutral lamp not working but if you need or trust a light instead of being always weary of it being actually in neutral you're setting yourself up for a bad day eventually if circumstances align. Regardless of that one thing it's perfect. I'd personally recommend 07 forwards for fuel injection sometimes carbs are a pain in the ass. Hence why I got a 2010. The Harley Davidson sportster is a rare machine! Nothing else like it! Yamm acts like it’s a shock that the 883 is not built for performance minded riders? It’s a 30 yr old motorcycle! That’s it’s appeal! If you don’t want that, then buy something else? I’m a brand new rider, and the fact that I can get into a Harley Davidson that is rideable for noobs and looks freaking amazing! Is awesome! It’s KILLER! Yeah I said it. I freaking love my sporty 883! This garbage about it being almost unrideable because of the shocks and controls and feel and lean angle, is complete and total BULLSHIT. It’s extremely, extremely, rideable! Mine is bone freaking stock and it rides great. It doesn’t tear up the streets or pop wheelies or feel like a sport bike no, of course not. But unrideable? Whatever? Not even close! I ride mine all over, everyday, everywhere, and I have a freaking blast doing it!
I’m a brand new rider too. And I agree w you on the sportster stock being rideable. I have little riding experience and I’ve been loving every second of it. I’m going to guess that it’s also our limited riding experience and having little else to compare it to that contributes a bit to that. Either way I don’t care haha I love my bike. Faults and all
I'm planning to jump into riding, because I always loved to look of the classic bikes and cafe racer type things. I'm a complete noob when it comes to bikes, but I love tinkering and repairing, I have been rebuilding one of my cars in the last 15 years, so I have learned a lot through the years. Let's say I'm not afraid of any task now. I've learnt a lot, remade complete wiring harness, rebuilt the 6 cylinder engine etc. I never was a fan of speeding through corners, cruising is what suits me best. So as a first bike the Sportster just ticks all the boxes and even more so after watching your review. Thanks!
I’m financing mine. It’s a 2022. White sand pearl. I love it. If you get an exhaust, air filter and that tune, you’re set with a bad ass Harley. You don’t go out and buy a sportster to go fast. You wanna look bad ass. It definitely has that factor
The Sporty is like a Jeep Wrangler: it's grossly overpriced for what you get, but it does its job. And if you want it to do its job well, it's up to you as the owner to make it your own
The difference is Jeep has actually *improved the power train and suspension* of the wrangler over the past 30 years, while keeping (most of) the look. The 883 is the same bike 30 years ago but pricier.
Spending $10k on a Sportster then spending another $5k to make it 'rideable' means I could spend $12k on a good bike, another grand or 2 on accessories and still have money left over...hmmm
Although the 1200 is faster and more powerful than the 883, it also vibrates more. I like to ride in the mountain twisties and I prefer the 883's shorter gears and smoother ride. The fact that it's a 2005 and has given me ZERO problems doesn't hurt, either.
I guess if you’re not into the cruiser lifestyle you just can’t understand the sportster. I know that I don’t really care about performance numbers. I’m totally open to other styles of motorcycling but I just enjoy this one
Throwing sparks on turns, the sound of the engine through worn out mufflers, and the vibes are what it is all about. I've had my Evo 883 since 1986, model year 1987. I've upgraded fuel tanks twice, put a full fairing on the front, crash bars, highway bars, p-pad, and sissy bar. I added saddle bags, and throw saddle bags over them. I also added a handlebar attached tool bag. It still runs great, plenty of power, and I can go 200 miles now on a fill. It doesn't bang out until 96 mph, and I've ridden it across the US twice in all weathers. The seat isn't ripped, but it has gotten stiff, and needs replaced. The fuel gage is giving the bike a shake at a stop light. If you can hear it sloshing around, your good.
Here’s the thing with the sportster. It’s an amazing bike! Really! It’s a legitimate beginner bike that can also be something you keep your entire riding life. It’s iconic and nostalgic and all that. It’s one of the freaking coolest looking bikes on the road regardless of make or model. It’s a design that has been selling non stop since 1957! Non stop! The only reason it’s going away is emissions regulations. It can be retuned, retrofitted, revived, revised, and re-whatever into almost anything your mind can dream up! If you need more power from it, well you have multiple, multiple, options! Just how much power do you need it to make, because you can probably get it there in the aftermarket? There are kits to take it beyond 120+hp! Or maybe you just want to wake it up a little? Put a breather an exhaust and retune and enjoy. Or stick one of multiple different cams available for it in there and again, enjoy! Change the bars, change the seat, change the suspension, the wheels, the tank, the forks, whatever you want! To say the sportster is not a good motorcycle and that people who buy and ride them are wasting their money is ridiculous. Just shows a complete lack of imagination and foresight. Not everyone wants a stock machine that is exactly like every other bike that shares its name.
The most famous t-shirt company, that also makes motorcycles! Oh my God I literally fell out of my chair cuz it's so right on I could not stop laughing.
HD is the best selling apparel and motorcycle company. Yamaha is the best selling electric piano and motorcycle company. Dove is the best chocolate and shampoo/conditioner company.
This bike is like a souvenir that you're meant to preserve and admire - an essential part of American history. The experience transports you to a different time. Performance is secondary.
The sporty is the kind of bike you can do anything you want and customize anyway you want for every riders style of riding. Put a hammer big bore kit and you will be doing mid 11s all night long at the track. I’ve had my share of rides from sport bikes to street bikes and even dirt bikes and I will always go back to a sporty. I personally still have an R1, a VRod, a Kawi KX250F and a sporty 883 that I converted to a 1275cc
I won’t lie…I bought the 2022 883 because I like the way it looks. 🤷🏻♂️. And you are right…I did a lot of mods right off the bat. The price does suck, but as you said…it’s just a toy.
I love my Iron 883 and wouldn’t trade her for the world. It’s a fun bike around town. Everywhere I go people stop to ask me about her. As you very mentioned the aftermarket parts world is endless. She is a canvas you can make your own.
Thank you guys, this video made me love the bike more. This Harley Davidson iron 883 is a dream ride for me and probably would stay as it is as the price is beyond me. Nonetheless I wouldn't want any other bike than iron 883. Kudos to both of you.....Go Harley Davidson!
Had one for 35 years. Had other bikes as well, but the sporty has stuck around. Bought it because I thought it would be easy to work on after havrng s bevel drive Ducati. I was right. Never had to do anything to it. Nothing. In stock 883 form, if serviced properly....no worries.
Sportsters are great, they just not sport enough for some and considered the little bike to guys with Streetglides but get one in your garage next to your Streetglide or Electraglide and you'll love it.
Yep, my Sportster is one that will be mine until someone smashes it, or I can't ride any more. I researched, I determined the exact variant that was right for me, then I sat on my cash until one of them came up for sale. To top it off, the variant I chose has 32° lean angle.
I have a 2009 Sportster 883 Iron. I absolutely love it. It’s not near perfect, but it sounds amazing, looks awesome, and is loads of fun. It’s all subjective (as you have said). Also as you said, it’s not about the performance- it’s all about the feels.
same here. Im not a speed demon or have a death wish. I want something to commute to work and look cool doing so with a nice budget. they look comfortable too.
The Iron 883 was my 1st bike, it was a great first bike & got me into riding. I rode it for 3 years before stepping up to a BMW S1000R with no problems at all.
I bought a Harley Sportster 1200 as my first bike a couple of years ago. It probably was not the most sensible choice and today, I can definitely say that I would have needed to shop around a bit more. But if I were buying my first bike today? You bet it'd be a Sportster.
Love how you guys continuously let me know when your opinions are objectively or subjectively reasoned. Can you do the same thing when you are being sarcastic or non sarcastic? I often do that to help people understand me.
I own a 2015 xl883l or Superlow, I like the look of the bike.. it kind of low to the ground and forward controls, makes the bike comfortable. Sure I wish it had more power and wish the oil cap wasn't under my butt. Other then I do like it. Sure there are plenty of thinks Harley can improve upon, I won't argue with that. But in some ways, glad Harley's doesn't have too many electronics so you could probably work on them without taking it to a shop. Unlike mordern days cars, most look the same and many things you can't do yourself without taking it to a shop.
I've had my 1200 sportster for almost 2 years now. It went from bone stock to fully built and I couldn't be happier. It rides well on the road and will still rip a 10 second 1/4 mile. I love the looks, the sound, and the way it makes me feel. Its the moders dream. Theres so much aftermarket support its unreal. And its fun to hurt the crotch rocket boys feelings at the drag strip too😉
@@chrishart8548 most modern liter bikes run high 9s and mid 10s. I race with them just about every weekend. Its all gearing🤷 my bike tops out right after the 1000 ft mark at 139. I'm also pushing WELL over 120 wheel. And my bike is 490 wet.
I went to buy a Sportster 3 times in my life. Each time I took a test drive. I turned back to the dealer after about 100 feet. How is it possible that the Sportster, with it's beautiful looks, can't be 100 lbs lighter, have 100 horsepower, have no vibration? After 70 years?
That, my friend, is why I hate Harley; they're too lazy, dumb, arrogant, pick one to make better bikes. They're already the best in the world, don't ya know.
Harley has had a 90 plus HP 500 lb Sportster in the catalog but it didn’t move. Blame their marketing or customers the XR was dropped due to lack luster sales.
There are so many cliches and not entirely relevant things in this video it’s hard to know where to start. They are complicating the hell out of buying a bike. I may be wrong but you own a bike because of how it makes you feel. Not only when you ride it but just looking at it. It doesn’t matter what you do to your bike as long as it makes you happy doing it. I have 2 old Harleys, both 79’s. I owned my first one in 79 and it was a different time. A Harley didn’t make you cool and they weren’t a luxury item. Leathers didn’t make you a badass, they kept your badass intact in case you came off your bike. T shirts didn’t cost $35 and an accessory was something you bolted on your bike. The whole point of owning a Harley is because you liked riding it, same as any other bike. So you can watch all these videos and let someone tell you what’s right/wrong with a Harley or, you can go and ride one. If you buy a bike for any reason other than you really like riding it you probably bought the wrong bike. So go find a bike you like and get some saddle time, you’ll enjoy it. I like these 2 guys, they’re good for the sport and maybe they’ll motivate some new people to become bike owners. Pay attention out there and get home safe.
I'm 65 just retired ,worked physically hard most my life , still healthy but my bones stoving up ,I feel it coming ,old age , a relic , a has been , money in my pocket now , this bike sounds like me me , now to decide new or used , something bout it something to pass on ,very good video the good cop bad cop scenario, the pros and cons were conveyed in an intelligent manner , good video

im thinkin about buying the iron 883 from my ex father in law. hes getting older and i'd like to have a chill cruiser for work or city commutes. my main bike is a 2023 BMW S1000R which i tend to ride to fast on commutes if you know what i mean. and the harley would be perfect for "transportation".
i personally dont like how sport bikes feel ergonomically, and i only ever go maybe 5 mph over the speed limit. some of the naked bikes sit a little better, but you still have to throw your leg over the tall back end of the bike. i originally looked at a z400 and it was just a pain in the butt to get on for me. i saved a couple grand and bought a well maintained 2008 883 and was so happy with how much torque it had and how comfortable it was to ride. now this was my second ever bike (had a dirt bike), but still considered it my starter bike. i may consider something like a soft tail or dyna later on.
I owned and rode a Buell XB12 for 8 years and I loved it. It was quirky, hot, and vibrated something fierce. It was hipster AF. I have always been a sport bike rider favoring the modern street fighter style and configuration. The Buell really fit my taste. When I was in the market they were cheap too. I daily ride to work and lately I have been desiring a more cruiser riding position. I found a 2011 sportster superlow 883 for $4000 with low miles. I struggled to pass it up. I was sure that I would regret the power I was missing from the 1200cc buell motor. Call me crazy but this Sportster is a blast. It is everything that people say it is, old dated, simple heavy, and its awesome. Super robust parts, pretty simple by design. Easy to work on well for the most part anyway. I am becoming a Harley guy. Heee HAAAAA.
I agree with everything, but I bought an Iron 1200 6 months ago and I really love it. I've never looked at the best I can get, but what I like, I like the legacy, the idea of riding a harley, the sound remembers me all those movies with bad and good guys riding harleys, and I live just a few miles awey from Ducati's factory :D
I don’t mind the maintenance of a chain, as I’ve done field expedient repairs on a chain. When the belt is broken, it’s broken. Belts have their places, but so do chains. Also, if you’re stunting on a cruiser, you need a chain for the abuse.
@@lowcountryrob170 in thirteen years of riding, and taking residence in 3 states, I've known of one rider (UA-camrs not withstanding) to have had a belt failure. He had an early 100ci Victory named "Purple Eagle" and his second belt failure happened during a burnout at (I don't know the mileage precisely) over 130k. But yea, stunting on a belt drive is hard on belts, but it also accelerates wear on a chain and sprockets. When it happens, its a tow truck, and I won't dispute that.
As some one who did a test ride on the new 2020 sportster 883 and rides a 2000 sportster 1200 I will tell you it feels so good to buy American and ride a sportster if you can’t afford it but used you will not regret it watch my review on this bike
I get that it's a great bike to mod because there's so much to fix. But what's wrong with starting out with a bike that's actually good and individualising that?
Guys, not sure that you get this bike. It goes faster than any legal speed limit in the world. The weight is an advantage in windy conditions. Belt drive old school??? What the??? Belt drive equals not oil and shit all over the place, no maintenance and a quiet, no noise drive train. Its a relaxing bike to ride, no screaming rpm motor below you. Brakes.... never had an issue them, stops great. Totally customisable. As an owner of multiple bikes, I'm confused by this video. Because this not a bike that screams high hp, you knock it. Lmao.... shakes your eye balls out. Its a motorbike guys, not a f,ing sewing machine. own one, put more than 20k klms on it, then review it, maybe then you opinion will change.
Not entirely convinced by this analysis. I bought a 2004 XL with 40,000 miles on it, stock with the exception a pair of slip on silencers, and a K&N filter. It went well enough, but the handling was a bit baggy. I rebuilt the suspension to suit my weight, and set up the steering geometry, threw in a carb' jet kit, and off we went. Grossly over geared, so on went a chain and sprocket kit (21/51 IIRC) to lower the gearing. Goes like a stabbed rat up to 100, and handles predictably, no serious vibration. Starts on the button, no electrical problems, or mechanical. Seems OK for a 17 year old motorcycle.
Once one gets over the latests gadgets, frills, and promises, a true motorcycle tragic gets the HD Sportster. It's motorcycling in its purest form. Raw, unapologetic, simple, and visceral. what makes one feel alive. Soulful and perfect.
Out of all the sportsters this on is g the e best. I was choosing between 1200 and Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster and ended up with the latter on. Sportster looks great.
I bought my motorcycle with mods in mind. Would much rather have something that is 2k less off the retail floor to make unique then get stuck with a ride that has little options. Mind you, I did NOT get a HD haha
I own a 1998 Ducati 900SS CR. You have compared my ride to the Suzuki SV650, but I feel like the Sportster is a more apt comparison. I even just discovered that you can turbo my bike yesterday.
Harley’s where very similar to Chevy’s where they are heavier than most competition and made for straightaways with troubles with the turns. Less Weight and more lean are important in turns vs just long straight USA freeways vs curvy European freeways that keep you awake.
Absolutely love my 07 883, 150 miles on a tank, extremely reliable, I can throw this hog around corners like nobody's business and the best is the simplicity and traditional look of the Sportster. When people picture a motorcycle they picture a Sportster.
Dealer near me wants 9500$ for a dropped, scratched up in several areas, dented fuel tank, bent handlebar, wont start 2020 883 with 1300 miles... The money people are willing to pay for these is nuts. I do like these but not nearly that much.
The brakes are just a suggestion? I mean, I used to own an Iron and I know they're bad. But I also own a 1981 XT500. That's basically a thermodynamic paradox. It's front brake generates heat while not providing any stopping power.
Here south africa harley 883 goes for R100k 5000kms 2016. R3 R110K ninja 500 R125k. Many other 300cc 400cc around that price. New. Somehow harley besides its old classic styling and riding. Feels like better deal. ????

Most non bikers think every naked bike is a Harley Davidson as that is the only name they can associate with Motorcycles. They do know if it’s red it must be from an Italian motorcycle company, DUCATI! That name is ICONIC and Exotic like Lamborghini. Harley Davidson are 2 iconic names that even non bikers know at least the name!!
I have a 2004 Harley 883! I changed out the wheels and installed a lowering kit and changed the handlebars ! Other than that its all stock!! I love my Harley!!! On top of that it's made in the good ol USA! Non metric tools needed!!!😀
I don't know about the EFI system but the carb and forks are metric.....have been for many decades. I wrench on mine all the time but it's only for scheduled maintenance or upgrades. My 2005 XL883 has never let me down, never leaked or dripped and vibrates very little. I've owned many metric bikes and my Sporty has been more reliable than half of them, just as good as the rest. Plus, you don't get the "plastic feel" like you do from the metric cruisers or sport bikes.
First time seeing you guys, love the "objective vs subjective" style. Add in some really clever one liners for entertainment, you guys are gold!! Not sure if you helped me on my decision to buy or not but certainly armed me with lots of things to consider when I start my test rides..... I will ride a few pre-owned slightly modded bikes before I ride a new one.
The fact is that if I want a Harley to cruise around on, I'm not going to look at a Suckakaki 300 because it's cheaper, lighter, and faster. I'm buying a bike that fits my needs, in this case, a 2015 Sportster 1200 Super Low with bags and a windshield. After 48 years of riding, I've learned to buy what I want and need and not to be pressured into buying something because it's cheaper or faster. You'll regret it. Ride what you want and be happy. Ride safe my friends.
i agree about the downfalls of harleys, but still like my street 750. is it a good bike? no. does it have flaws? glaring flaws. does it have great performance? no. but that being said i bought it cherry with 1400 miles for 3700 and its my first bike i love it in all its flawed potentially dangerous glory. will i own another harley? sure. will it be the only brand i consider? absolutely not. im with spike i dont care about performance i just want the freedom of riding on a nice day, and to cruise around town and just enjoy life im not a performance guru or a number junkie i just want some reprieve from life and it gives me that.

Trying to move up to a ninja 1000sx now once I get this one sold
I ride a loaded BMW S1000XR. At 71, I would buy a used 883 in a heartbeat, for around town, when I am done with long trips on a bike.
The Sporty is like a Jeep Wrangler: it's grossly overpriced for what you get, but it does its job. And if you want it to do its job well, it's up to you as the owner to make it your own
Except Sportster riders actually go out and ride their bikes, whereas 95% of Wranglers are pavement princesses that will never even see dirt
@@bobbybeyer2127 the correct term is Mall Crawler hahaha!
The difference is Jeep has actually *improved the power train and suspension* of the wrangler over the past 30 years, while keeping (most of) the look. The 883 is the same bike 30 years ago but pricier.
@@weirjf they're gonna ax it in a few years. A refresh now would be a sales failure.
@@sivvinod3187 Sales or not, the bike (like most of the harley line) is an engineering failure and is an embarrassment on 2 wheels. Pure stagnation.
Spending $10k on a Sportster then spending another $5k to make it 'rideable' means I could spend $12k on a good bike, another grand or 2 on accessories and still have money left over...hmmm
That's why you buy a used one for nothing.
You can buy a 2020 gsxr 600 for $12k brand new
I never liked motorcycles until I was passing by a Harley store and saw this iron 883, I bought it that day, It looks super nice :)
Although the 1200 is faster and more powerful than the 883, it also vibrates more. I like to ride in the mountain twisties and I prefer the 883's shorter gears and smoother ride. The fact that it's a 2005 and has given me ZERO problems doesn't hurt, either.
my condolences.

The sporty is the kind of bike you can do anything you want and customize anyway you want for every riders style of riding.

Funny, to me a belt drive is a pro. I hate the chain drive maintenance, and it doesn’t have the power loss like a shaft drive.
What loss does the transfer case impose. I could imagine it's not very much, but it has to be some.
Chain is the most flexible, tho
Then get a Moto Guzzi V7/V9 with its shaft drive, you'll basically never have to touch it. Plus it looks better.

I get that it's a great bike to mod because there's so much to fix. But what's wrong with starting out with a bike that's actually good and individualising that?
Its like buying a slow car and modding it to make it quick, or you can buy a quick car and mod it to go fast.

They had a part 2 of the build where they finished bolting it together, but we still haven't gotten any kind of ride review on the mods.
You get Harley to loosen up them blue

The problem with mods is that by the time you pay for the bike, who has another $2K set aside for more purchases?
Harley always sells you two bikes. The first is assembled, and the second you buy one piece at a time.
I bought my motorcycle with mods in mind. Would much rather have something that is 2k less off the retail floor to make unique then get stuck with a ride that has little options.
Mind you, I did NOT get a HD haha

You left out the best part; start it up and hear that mean custom exhaust sound!
Harley’s where very similar to Chevy’s where they are heavier than most competition and made for straightaways with troubles with the turns. Less Weight and more lean are important in turns vs just long straight USA freeways vs curvy European freeways that keep you awake.
That comparison makes absolutely no sense
The Sportster isn’t running huh?
Absolutely love my 07 883, 150 miles on a tank, extremely reliable, I can throw this hog around corners like nobody's business and the best is the simplicity and traditional look of the Sportster. When people picture a motorcycle they picture a Sportster.
Dealer near me wants 9500$ for a dropped, scratched up in several areas, dented fuel tank, bent handlebar, wont start 2020 883 with 1300 miles... The money people are willing to pay for these is nuts. I do like these but not nearly that much.
Well, that dealer is greedy and f uk d in the head.

The brakes are just a suggestion? I mean, I used to own an Iron and I know they're bad. But I also own a 1981 XT500. That's basically a thermodynamic paradox. It's front brake generates heat while not providing any stopping power.

I love sportster 883 and i owe it to
When are the giveaways coming to the UK 😩 even if the winner pays the shipping or some of it each
i agree about the downfalls of harleys, but still like my street 750. is it a good bike? no. does it have flaws? glaring flaws. does it have great performance? no. but that being said i bought it cherry with 1400 miles for 3700 and its my first bike i love it in all its flawed potentially dangerous glory. will i own another harley? sure. will it be the only brand i consider? absolutely not. im with spike i dont care about performance i just want the freedom of riding on a nice day, and to cruise around town and just enjoy life im not a performance guru or a number junkie i just want some reprieve from life and it gives me that.
