I'm sorry, but pre 2003 rigid-mounted carburated Sporters are so different and so much better than the rubber-mounted and injected ones. The vibrations are so good, the sound is amazing, and it all adds up to the feel of a real iron motorcycle thundering on like a hammer. I have a 1997 1200xl. This is my first bike. I bought it because I wanted that feel of a true old motorcycle. Absolutely love it.
I have an old Ironhead, I will take the fuel injection over the carb any day. I can walk out no matter what the temp is and fire up the FI bikes, the ones with carbs take an act of God to start up when it is below 32F.
Mine is a 2000 1200S with Vance and Hines pipes and a 40mm Keihin butterfly carb, 10 K on the clock, and I've never dated open up the throttle for any appreciable period. It's Harley orange, though.
I just got my first bike at 39 yrs old....05 harley sportster 1200....I won't claim to be a harley enthusiasts....but this bike is making me one.....I love it.
EFI is not only failure prone (and very difficult and expensive to fix when it fails, compared to a carburetor) it is also very difficult to tune, which must be done just because you put an aftermarket exhaust or air cleaner on it. $1000 electronic tuner compared to $20 worth of jets. Tube type tires constantly have flats, and when they do, you are stranded. I have spent thousand of $$$ on towing bills and was almost killed a couple of times when a tube type tire blew out at highway speeds. I have over half a million miles on tubeless tires, and while I did have a couple of flats, I was able to easily fix them beside the road by plugging the puncture and reinflating them. No more tube type tires for me. All my bikes, except dirt and dual sport bikes, have all had bright shiny paint, and lots of chrome and polished aluminum. I've had 5 Harleys, 3 of them were Sportsters, I still have 2 of them, and I spent a lot of money putting extra chrome and polished aluminum on them. I've owned over 50 bikes during the past 46 years, I have 7 right now, and none of them are flat black. You couldn't give me a flat black bike unless I could sell it and keep the money. I find them disgustingly ugly. You can't even buy a decent looking cruiser style bike anymore. Every single one of them are flat black.
@@geraldscott4302 lmao, i dont like the flat black either on a bike. Have you tried converting spoked rims to tubeless? Thats what I'm about to do. Got some Tiger Seal to cover the center channel with. Put wheel on the balancing stand and smear it in there.
@@geraldscott4302 in additon 04 and earlier will fit aftermarket fuel tanks without having to weld in a new tunnel, so they make a much better sporty chopper than the big backbone of the 05-06(the last year they were carburated).
As a Sportster guy who spent over 30 years in the motorcycle industry, any Sportster from 91-03. 5 speed, non rubber mount. An individual model, for me, is the Sportster S. I've built several hot rod Sportsters for canyon carving and road racing. My current bike is a 93 frame with an 01 Buell Cyclone engine. 109 hp, 391 pounds wet, upside down forks, Storz rearsets, 17" spoked wheels. It is a Ducati eater. Lots of fun.
@@robertwhite2032 yup, definitely BS with that response. I’m a nobody and proof that you have a 391lb xl comes with you bragging about being on the scene since the 80s. Lmao 🤣 I do have a UA-cam account to back up my unrealistic claims. Btw: that Buell engine is an 80rwhp mutt
Bought the first evo 883 in July of 85,still have it bored to 1200,branch heads, supertrap 2 into one ex,dual disc brakes,a four gallon roadster tank and an aftermarket belt drive. Dad had the first sportster in 57(iron head). Had an 78, sweet looking bike he owned the rest of his life. Why no older ones on this list like the cafe racer?
I have an 01 883 hugger and it’s the only things I ever bought new. 24k miles now and I am 300 pounds but I don’t care that I’m too big for it. It still rides amazing and I smile the whole ride
@@frankcastle5294 put up or shut up. I have been semi retired since I was 30 fully retired since I was 50. All l do is ride around for fun and games. I commuted 100 miles a day going to work. In between jobs l rode to temp assignment and job interviews. I go on day trips just to get out of the house 🏠. Just put front tire 18 on while doing fork seals and new brakes. Back tire 39 soon to go on. I ride her daily.Almost bought another one but won't pay HD stupid fees. I have no reason to lie for nothing. I merely report on the facts. I am so proud of my Sportster. Just put $800 into her. I bet she would pass a leak down test even now. She is like a good dog who has been rehomed. Check out Sportsters 250 K whole bunch of guys like me with high mileage. Take care of your bike and it will take care of you. I put 250,000+ miles on my CX 500 in 10 years untill it died. I am a high mileage guy. @@frankcastle5294 the evolution powered Sportster is Harley-Davidson's most reliable motorcycle engine. I have not done anything to the engine mechanical wise and the only thing I've done to the primary is to replace the stator at 250,000 me about 10 plus years ago. It has gone through 39 back tires 18 front tires and three belts in 25 years. I just redid the front fork brakes tires and new fork seals and had the unfortunate next to hit a pothole that blew the fork seal on the left side which means I will have to do the left side again. I would more than be happy to buy another 883 Sportster of the same vintage with low mileage because with just changing the fluids and the filter it just keeps running and running and running.
@@Hillbilly-im8ce change the fluids and filter regularly and the bike will last you forever with just minimal maintenance. The 40000O miles on the original untouched motor is genuine. Not lying about the motor at all why should I have to what would be the point?
@@frankcastle5294 it is ironic that I bought the Sportster so I would have plenty of places for service and repair and now that the bike is over 10 years old nobody wants to touch it. I'm hoping to get half a million miles before I have to do a top-end job. People say I'm lying about the mileage for this absolutely true. This bike is outlasted all of my Hondas put together. I am so glad svm came out with the stormbreaker because now more people than ever will be introduced to the pleasure of riding and owning a Sportster. Harley should not have discontinued it.
Mine is a 2005 xl1200c, chose it for it's long range and comfort (rubber mounted engine). I ride very challenging mountain roads, not pretending it's a mountain carver but it handles very well. Chrome, well it just makes it a classic.
I have the same bike. It’s a beast with the Vance and Hines pipes! I love mine. I did put a new clutch plate in bc of those rivet crap Harley put in it. I’m 70 and I’ll be buried with it and my Jeep and boat!
The earlier 1200 Custom looked a lot cooler than the later ones in my opinion. 3.3 gal tank instead of the 4.5, mag rear, spoked 21" front. The stock seat is a little more interesting as well.
I've just bought a 2004 Sportster Custom. I had to have the rubber engine mounts, but didn't particularly want EFI. I would have gone for the Sportster R just for the twin front discs but I simply could not live with the peanut tank - it looks like an afterthought perched on top of the engine. The teardrop tank looks 'meant to be'.
Being the "most unique" Sportster doesn't make it the "best Sportster"! Come on, man. You put looks above practical use, have weird criteria and then choose something actually pretty cool at #1, so I appreciate you doing this. I bought a '22 Iron 883 when I turned 71 after not riding for 30 years. I love my plain, simple, and at my age how much more do I need after windshield, bags and seat are added? Interesting vid> Thanks.
I have a 2012 custom with factory windshield and hard bags. I love it. The kids love riding on the back. Has an Amazon sissy bar. 4.5 gallon tank. Take it across florida all the time with no issues. From port richey to ormond beach
1998 Sportster 1200S. From the factory it had piggy back rear shocks, dual spark plug heads and a mild cam. Those are really nice upgrades from the factory. Hoping one will pop up for sale in my area
Just got one and came here to say this. I like the 1999-2003 Sportster S. The original Sportster S. Rigid mount motor is cool, especially now that everything is working to isolate you from the motor (rubber mounts and counter balances). The Buell heads flow really well. Double plugged to make sure you get every last drop of bang for your buck. The cams are a little more than mild - they’re fun as hell. Dual discs upfront are great. The front shocks are adjustable too. I’ll never sell this one. It’s too much fun. Check one out. The torque will have you jumping off the line.
@@chrisrhoy That's good to know, I've never ridden one. I really want one though. It would save me a lot of money since it already has upgrades I would do to a standard 1200. I'm saving up to buy a sportster next summer. So I'm hoping one is available when I'm ready to buy.
@@chrisrhoy I've had my "S" for 19 years now I've put 73,000 miles on it. Best Sporty out of all of them. Especially love the no chrome and even black pipes.
i got a 2000 883 not sure witch type it is but i love it put a 29 tooth sprocket in the primary and rides amazing in the freeway also gets great gas milage i tour with it and have not issues so far
Own a 2012 Sportster Nightster dark grey with navy blue pin stripe on tank. 300lb rider and it’s never let me down hauling my butt up highway hills and imo always surprised at how smooth she runs at 75mph on the highway and how happy it is to go even more passing other rides. Only thing I added to it was a sissy bar and a passenger seat.
After being without motorcycle for about 5 years, (my last bike was an ‘85 iron head 1000) I got a really nice 2003 1200C Anniversary Edition w/5k original miles and 10 out of 10 cosmetics. I appreciated the power and it was in every way a better bike than my old iron head. I liked the bike a lot. But then… I’m 65, retired, and have a son who isn’t exactly a biker yet. I wanted to connect… so I bought a 2004 1200C that was cosmetically compromised but with 6k low miles - cheap. Despite it being ugly with spray can flat black and skulls everywhere, it was a night and day better riding bike than my 2003 princess perfect anniversary edition. I really liked the rubber mounted engine. It makes a hell of a difference on any ride over 15 miles. 2003 vs 2004. It’s still carburerated. So now I’ve got to find a 2004 for myself. I found a 2004 1200C with a wide glide kit and a 16” front wheel. I put a set of Pirelli MT60s 130 front 150 rear on the bike. I have the three bikes. The 2003 is a beautiful motorcycle and it feels a lot like my old ‘85 iron head 1000 but with more power and a better transmission. My son on his 2004 has chopped the back fender, removed the front fender, installed fork boots, installed a raised peanut tank (preprinted black) and has a deer skull w/antlers in place of the headlight w/ 2 micro LED headlights, and I have my 2004 with the wide glide and big front tire. All three will do 110mph+. Big difference between the 2003 and 2004 as far as comfort and I don’t see a downside to the rubber mounted engine. I don’t want to go to electronic fuel injection. My 2004 runs great with no issues. My sons 2004 had an off-throttle burp but we just rebuilt the carb in an afternoon and installed a 45 idle jet and it now runs great. Sportsters are all about making them your own. If you don’t like the gas tank, change it. If you don’t like the color, you gotta pay if you wanna play and the best sportster there is is the one you own.
Mine is the 72. I replaced the peanut tank with a 4.5 painted gloss black and glued lead crystals to complete my vision. Like green stars on a black sky.
I'm 67 years old and I rode mostly sportbikes. My pick for the best Sportster XL1200CX Roadster, why dual disc brakes 50mm inverted fork, radial ply tires, 18" rear wheel more ground clearance and better handling. Trash the OEM H-D Dunlops and get a set if Pirelli scorpions and you have sportbikes handling. In my opinion this Roadster 2016 - 2020 is a Sportster back to its original roots as a sportbike, hence the na.e Sportster.
I have the 2010 XR1200 with the Hammer 1275 CI with the Hammer head work. It does go good, The Screamin Eagle Tuner, tuned by the best dyno guy around western Massachusetts. Stock cams, 45 MPG dynoed at 99 HP. Thinking on selling it, no I am not. Good video
Maybe I missed something, but afaik, the "peanut" tank only ever came as the 2 gal, if you want more capacity, the "teardrop" tank is the only factory option. Unless you go with custom aftermarket, of course.
The original peanut tank was a 1 2/3 gallon gas tank shaped like a real peanut. It was custom aftermarket and universally mounted for any chopper. The Sportster tank is called a Sportster tank, not a peanut tank. But hey, I understand where you are coming from as I hung out with drunks in bars too when I was young
@martincvitkovich724 in any case, afaik, you won't get the peanut/"sportster" shape and the larger capacity at the same time, unless you get a custom or aftermarket tank.
The 2007 H-D XL1200R Roadster is the best sportster once new shocks, new fork springs, new air cleaner assembly, new K&N filter, new exhaust, new tires, new fuel tuner, new brake lines, new handlebars, and new dyno adjustments are installed.
My favourite one's the one I ride every day. It's a 2000 Sydney Olympic games limited edition, no.22 of 60. They were used during the games by UPS couriers for carrying TV footage tapes from the venues to Sydney's transmission tower. After the games they were sold off. I'm the third owner. Apart from the logo on the ignition cover, decal on the front mudguard, and the saddlebags, it's a basic black 2000 XLH883 from out of the Kansas City plant. Mine has a carry rack on it as well but I believe one of the previous owners added that. The pre EFI ones were the best. They're still very simple bikes that are easy to work on & maintain. I take the wheels to the tyre bloke for new shoes & a balance, but I do everything else that needs doing myself. The evo Sportster engine unit is pretty much bulletproof. I've been looking after the bike myself for 12 years now & everything is still fine. It's done some miles too. My sister lives about 450 km away, and my daughter about 1000. It does those trips just fine, and I ride to work on it as well. I haven't owned a car for 33 years. The bike's had some age related issues here & there over the past couple of years but I fix those as they manifest themselves, which is something I should be able to continue doing for quite a while yet - as long as HD & the after market guys keeps selling spare parts for the thing. I got no plans to sell it, especially since they stopped building new ones last year.
I’ve just bought a 2005xl1200r it’s got taller shocks longer fork travel,a bigger tank speedo and rev counter. It’s got worked on heads from standard, I think they are buell cyclone heads with bigger fins on barrels and heads, and standard hot cams.I’m 69 and ride a shovelhead bobber, but I wanted something to give me a bit off comfort at times😂 I absolutely love it. We have quite a few X-r 1200 in the uk but a bit out off my price range as I’m only a poor old pensioner😂👍🇬🇧
I may be biased but I own a '20 Iron 1200 and would rank it above the Nightster. Mainly because I actually prefer the mag wheels and complete blacked out accents, as well as the mini apes. But the Nightster did have great paint schemes for sure.
1998 XL1200S is definitely the best Sportster, from the Sporty tank graphics to the fully adjustable suspension, higher compression with longer duration cams. But wait, there's more...
1998-03 Sportster S with twin plug Buell heads. Fully adjustable front and rear Olins, twin front discs. GREAT machine. Solid mounted and lighter than 04 and newer
I'd go with that 4.5 gallon teardrop shaped tank, every single time. Function, gotta have fuel if you're going to ride. Probably a Sportster 1200 T would interest me the most, followed by a 883 Superlow. I'd put greater travel shocks on the back for a better suspended ride, the roads around here are kind of rough. That said... I currently own a 2018 Softail Sport Glide. The frame is now massively stiff, no flexing in turns like before on the Dyna. It's heavy at near 700#, and 107 cubic inches is overkill, but the 5 gallon fuel tank is handy. 200 mile days are easy...with usually a gallon of fuel to spare, to keep the fuel pump in the tank happy. Love the electric start, cruise control, and fuel injection keeping the fuel mixture spot on, whatever the elevation you're riding at. But it's expensive to maintain, compared to a Sporty. As I get older and need a lighter bike, a Sportster might be in my future again. I don't see them as girly bikes, like some people do. Just will I fit, at 6' 5" and 280#.
@@TheMotoJawn Do you know anyone that makes a quiet 2 into 1 full length exhaust system for the Sportster that wouldn't interfere with the bags on a 1200 T ?
I love my 2013 XLC 1200. With mini apes, windshield, luggage rack, passenger backrest and Harley bags, and a 4.5 gallon tank, it is not only great for short trips but also for long rides. It always puts a smile on my face, even at 76 years young. I've never dropped it but if I ever do, I know I can still pick it up! 😅
i wanted a nightster but couldn't find one in my price range. found a 72 less than 15 minutes from where i was staying, at a great price, so i snatched it up. love them all!
My first Sportster was a 2005 1200R. It was a great bike, the only problem I ever had was a front motor mount bolt fell out. It got about 55 mpg. Ran great. Great bike, but not too comfortable for 2 people.
2005 883XLC. Put 10 thousand miles on it in 2 riding seasons, i did exhust, torq cones, s and s csrb, custom nash brothers bars, mag whelel in front, new seat, getting it converted to 1200 right now. Its badass.
The best sportster....is a 95-05 5spd, Carburated, Rigid mounted , Sportster. The cases for 883/1200's have been standardized for years but the imternals have not always been of equal strength and quality. Prior to 95-96 the internals of the bottom ends of the engine were different per displacement (883/1200). After which Harley made the 1200 bottom end the standard for both displacement with slight variations in the heads and obviously in bore.... they're the racers dream machine because of the proliferation of NOS and aftermarket parts and support
Hi, I think the XR1200 is nice, but still EFI is not right for a sportster! I have own 88 1200, 48, and recently got a 06 carburettor XL1200R. I also have a 88 FXRP, but find the 1200R is another level to enjoy ridding. It's fast and got lot of throttles, even more than the FXR !? It's very easy and fun to ride with! love it.
in my opinion the best sportster is the 72 xl1200v, it represents the 70's style, looks like a real chopper from the movie Easy rider. i like a lot of chrome, big thin front spoke wheel, low stance, big handlebars, it's narrow, awesome 70's style colors, great bike, i'm in love with it. Also just like me, counts the market as it's more expensive than all other sportsters
Mine is a Yellow Pearl beauty. Take a look through the classified ads, and there are plenty of low mileage Sportsters for cheap money. It's like a secret, so you didn't hear it from me!
I ride a Nightster, but with the limited quarter mile paintjob which originally was made for the 883 (I guess) and with the Chizzled mini ape. Love it! One can see it on my channel. Great review, dude.
I remember when I was a little guy in the early 70's and a man down the street had a new bike of the month. Rocket 3, Rickman Metisse 8 valve head on a Bonneville 650 engine cafe racer, etc. Then he shows up with a super quality Sportster chopper 1000. Then a relative shows up on another 1000 chopper. Back then they were dangerous. Drum brakes and handled like a log wagon. But, good looking peanut tanks and beautiful engine. Sounded wonderful. But, my dad's new CB750 K1 was my favorite. Good times.
I like all Harleys especially Sportsters. They are so cool looking but must have the peanut tank. Mine is an 06 883 . I do have black handlebars on it. Otherwise it has the chrome. 06 is the last of the carburators which I like and it is my favorite year Harley. Thanks for the video. If you get a chance get back to me.
Always thought the sportster custom was the best because it has the biggest gas tank. Mine is the 48. But the most comfortable one I ever drove was the 72
I have a stock 2000 1200S with factory screamin' eagle factory mods. The only downer s that it's Harley orange. But on the plus side, it has only 10 K on the clock. I'm currently getting it tuned, but it has an apparently unattainable Keihin 40mm butterfly carb. I can't find a rebuild kit.
Nice list! I have a 2013 Sportster Custom 1200, this list is actually 2007 onwards, with the oldest bike the Nightster 2007 mid-model year launch followed by the XR1200 also a mid model year launch in 2008. I would have made the Nightster first for what it did to the Sportster and Harley starting the Dark Custom line up with blacked out core finishes which integrated the Dyna Street Bob and Fat Bob in its first year. I think the models with the tear drop 4.5 gallon tank are more a complete package if you want to do some highway and weekend touring hop ups. The XR1200 is top for its rarity its extra horse power bump and handling, it was kinda a competitor to the air cooled Ducati Monster of 2008 with iconic Harley design thrown into it. It also handled extremely well, better to the 1200 Roadster launched in 2016 for example as it was also lighter with plastic parts thrown in and had a higher clearance and a better lean angle. As best sellers go the Iron 883 is difficult to beat, followed by the standard 48, I think these would top the list as the most sold Sportster and Harleys of all time considering they lasted ten years in production. The 48 launched the 130 fat tire for the Sportster in 2010, which in 2011 was added to the Custom line up. The tear drop 4.5 us gallon tank was introduced in 2004, the year the rubber mounted frame came in, with fuel injection evo coming in 07. The 48 also had an important updated with the fat 57 inch front forks from 2016 onward, the biggest update to the model.
I really like the Iron 883. My bike is an 06 883, last of the carburetors which I like and I like the mag wheels. It has chrome but I have black handle bars and it has the peanut which I also love the look of. The 883 engine is definitely enough power for me. Thanks for your video.
A fantastic and informative video on the different models in the sportster range. Great for newcomers to Harley like myself. I was perplexed until I saw this great video. Thank you!
For looks ballance and direct power I'm saying the 883C 100yr anniversary 2003 silver & Black. But for sheer power and ridability the xr 1200. The iconic colour way was also a winner.
Anyone who said you can't tour 72 sportster, is lying I have the 72 ane rode it all the way from LA to San Francisco over 600 miles one way and made it just fine.
so disappointed in this video. from the title I expected you to discuss performance, suspension, braking, reliability, frame mount vs rubber mount, carb vs efi, so many great discussion points. alas you might as well had your wife do this video, oooo I love this paint scheme ! oh the chrome vs black! smmfh
2004 sportster, saddleman seat, Memphis shades detachable windshield, Harley saddle bags, stage 2 tune, Vance and Hines shorts. I've had many bikes over the years, i was a big time adrenaline junkie. This is my favorite bike! I sold a goldwing aspencade and bought it. I will never sell this bike!
I miss my 1988 883 Hugger so much. I have the Roadster and it crushed my foot when I went down one day. 570 lbs is a bear to pick up. I'll go back to the older Sporty one day.
I have a 1996 1200 custom and that's the best imo bc it's my fav everyyeyrrejjr. I got it for a killer deal for $1500. It was pretty much brand new with about 15k miles. So hey, I'm so happy with my motorcycle.
Proud owner of a lil 883 iron here . To me the nightster is the best of them all .......one day . Sportster are so much fun to ride on a daily commute , nimble , loud and full of attitude , mine is customised to my taste and like all sportster completely unique ! I have been riding in northern Europe for 30 years now and have had many different motorcycles but my lil Iron is by far my favourite bike , even went for a 3000 mile trip around France a couple of months ago . A bike is what you make it . Ride free, ride safe
Professor Jawn in the house! Takin everyone to school today with that Sportster history. Really fun topic, but I'd have to say the sportster 48 or the 48 special takes it for me. The peanut tank really looks awesome even if it does only hold 2 gallons.
The the narrow frames are the ones the build to drag race preferably 97 to 2003 that should tell you something for people who like the split frame. You can have them!
Greetings from the jersey shore, enjoyed the vid. Had a few sportsters, loved every one of them. Bought used, paid cash. Current ride is 2008 xl1200r, gets my bias vote.
The 48 should be number 11 because of that big front tire, they tried to turn it into a mini fat boy. My favorite is the 72 1200, I have a 2016 72 grey denim, beautiful bike, and a 2010 Iron, 883. Love the looks and ride of both of them. The peanut tank is great if you never leave town but if you go on the road, especially riding hard, 2.1 gallons ain't enough. even with the teardrop, 3 gallons ain't enough.
I think the teardrop on the SuperLow is 4.5 gallons. It's the peanut tank of the Ironhead 883 or the 1200 that's really limiting in range. Sort of tells you HD didn't intend for you to ride this bike very far, without getting off of it for a fill up. Somewhat a PIA if you live out west and fuel stations are kind of sparse in between.
@@feloniousmonk3049 I rode my 1200 from PA to Tucson, I could squeak out 80 or 85 miles per tank, there were a few places in AZ and NM where I coasted in for gas on fumes. The 883 takes a gallon and a half to fill up when the fuel light comes on, haven't tried to push it, the light comes on between 60 and 65 miles. Paughco has some aftermarket tanks that allow installation of the factory pump/petcock with a larger capacity. That is my plan as soon as I find someone who can match the grey and black denim paint. If I can run 4 gallon tanks, I will be able to run 120 to 140 miles.
Philly area? This is one of my fav Sportster vids just because of your #1 pic. I'm retired from Harley Davidson...own 4 XR1200's...and they're just wonderful bikes and the power is incredible. Greetings from Lancaster County Amishland
The 2006 1200R had the most torque and HP of any sportster to that date and is a beast. With the blacked out casings dual disk brakes in the front it was the first darked out Sportster not the Nightster. The Nightster is a wimp next to the 06' 1200R, 54hp vs 70hp, ninja please! I do agree with the number one pick though, I'd have the 1200R right next to it though. My R was sick after sending a bunch of parts to the powder coaters and it got respect from the old school bikers after I blew their doors off with it, LOL!
TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU! My stable is almost full........ 09 Black XR named TYPHON 13 White XR named PEARL 17 Black Iron 883. PIGLET 02 White Hugger. LOLLIPOP LOVE SPORTY's.
I have a 2013 iron with S&S 1200 kit it’s such a fun bike and can carve then curves up like nothing them baggers don’t stand a chance on the back roads
The Superlow 883 is #1🤯Dyna Rims on the Superlow and the Dyna Tank 4.5g and the Midglide Triple Tree🤦♂️ i got mine set up as a Cafe/Club Sport. The cool thing about the Sportster, is they actually are all the same exact 💯 bike with only 2 motor options 883 and 1200, its the most versatile motorcycle Harley-Davidson has created. Even though they stopped making them in 2022. China bought all the blue prints and are starting to make the iconic Rubber mount Sportster with a Chinese name, what do you all think about that? 🤔
So you don't like the 1200 custom because of the excellent Superglide Tank and fat front wheel. Wel different years had differant tank, wheels. chromed out or black. You really need to mention what year. For me the best are the 04 -06 Sportsters as they have the rubber mounted frame but still have a carb. Mine was an 06 so had the Superglide TAnk, with Chrome Strap, Spoked Front 19" Wheel, Solid Rear 16" and Chrome Engine. I added the chrome side panel trim strips of another model to finish it off. Oh and the first blacked out Sportster was 1977 XLCH Cafe Racer.
The best to ride was the Roadster. Best suspension, old looks, and smooth at 90 to 110 mph. Yep disagree with the 48. It's the last one made cause it sold well and is popular.
I love my Sportster 883. Not too big, not too small. Being older now, it fits me perfecto. I just have no need for a faster bike at this point in my life.
Best = 1985 Sportster / Roadster XLS, 1000 Iron Head, Factory larger teardrop style tank with centre console, Black / Gold trim with Badge, ...I purchased new in 85’ ...I was 20 years old, shouldn’t have sold, a rare BEAST.
XR1200. Wish I had one. Didn’t have the money when they came out. Then they became hard to get. Or was it called xl1200s? The adjustable suspension and slightly hopped up motor one. Inverted forks and dual brakes.
I own a 2009 HD XR1200 in Denim Grey. I love it! A blast to ride and Fun.but nothing for Greenhorns.this Bike wants to be riden and needs all attention cause its powerful
Mine wasn't on the list lol. 2001 1200c. It's not the same as the custom on this list. 3.3 gallon tank. Big front spoke rim, solid rim with fat tire in the back, forward controls.
Best looking blacked out iconic look for me is the iron 883. Best silhouette for sure. Never liked the fat wheels on the 48. Since I think chrome and bigger tank can look timelessly good on a sportser, I d put a 1200 custom or superlow higher on the list, as long as they come with 19” front wheel, not the later model years fatties. In stead of a xr1200, I’d take a buell s1 or x1 anytime.
The best sportster is the sportster you buy and love.
Excellent ☝🏼🤓
THIS!
FACTS!
Well stated!
I agree
For me, after a couple weeks below freezing, the fuel injected stuff is the only thing that starts easy. @@aircooled352
Same here....1996 1200 XLH.
Mine is a 2000 1200S with Vance and Hines pipes and a 40mm Keihin butterfly carb, 10 K on the clock, and I've never dated open up the throttle for any appreciable period. It's Harley orange, though.
‘02 Hugger…. Still running tried and true. Love her!
I just got my first bike at 39 yrs old....05 harley sportster 1200....I won't claim to be a harley enthusiasts....but this bike is making me one.....I love it.
The best Sportster is one with a carbureted engine, and lots of chrome, tubeless tires, and isn't matte black. Extra points for pre '04s.
Why?
I hate chrome so much... no. Matte black is better.
2007 XL1200C. Rubber mount, fuel injected, 4.5 gallon tank. AWESOME!!!!!
I have that bike in yellow
When Norton rubber mounted the Atlas it lost 30lbs.When HD rubber mounted the Sportster it gained 80 lbs. What is up with that?
As a Sportster guy who spent over 30 years in the motorcycle industry, any Sportster from 91-03. 5 speed, non rubber mount. An individual model, for me, is the Sportster S. I've built several hot rod Sportsters for canyon carving and road racing. My current bike is a 93 frame with an 01 Buell Cyclone engine. 109 hp, 391 pounds wet, upside down forks, Storz rearsets, 17" spoked wheels. It is a Ducati eater. Lots of fun.
I've got a 96 and 01 Sportster S and an 09 Buell Ulysses

🤘😎🤘
What did you do to achieve 109 rwhp? And how did you the weigh the bike? Your 391lbs is not impossible, but I’m calling BS.
@RedlineDR1200 you are calling bs? Who cares? Who tf are you? I've been building sportsters since the early 80's.
I stayed with mostly 2000+ since I've only been able to ride those
I have an 01 883 hugger and it’s the only things I ever bought new. 24k miles now and I am 300 pounds but I don’t care that I’m too big for it. It still rides amazing and I smile the whole ride
I just bought that a few weeks ago with 20k miles on it and it rides fun as heck. Very good bike to learn on after my last ride 17 years ago
I have had my Sportster for 25 years and 400,000 miles on the original engine. 1999 883.
@@frankcastle5294 put up or shut up. I have been semi retired since I was 30 fully retired since I was 50. All l do is ride around for fun and games. I commuted 100 miles a day going to work.
Chrome is classic fa sho 👌
I have the same bike and I love it?
I have the same one.
I just bought back my 2004/1200c. It handles very well and has nice torque. It is a keeper, but need to get better rear shocks.
Good look with the 21 spoked wheel
I have one 😀
Sounds like a blast!
1998 Sportster 1200S. From the factory it had piggy back rear shocks, dual spark plug heads and a mild cam. Those are really nice upgrades from the factory. Hoping one will pop up for sale in my area
That's awesome

2000 was a good year
Own a 2012 Sportster Nightster dark grey with navy blue pin stripe on tank.
Good video
Would love to ride one of those.
2009 XR1200. 6,000 miles. In 2024. My first Harley. In love.
I may be biased but I own a '20 Iron 1200 and would rank it above the Nightster. Mainly because I actually prefer the mag wheels and complete blacked out accents, as well as the mini apes. But the Nightster did have great paint schemes for sure.
I do prefer the mag too actually
No way in hell… Bars are 100$ and 30 mins of your time..
1998 XL1200S is definitely the best Sportster, from the Sporty tank graphics to the fully adjustable suspension, higher compression with longer duration cams. But wait, there's more...
👍👍👍
I have a 2000 XL2000S with Screamin' Eagle level something. V&H pipes, 40mm Keihin butterfly carb... I like it.
what is a longer duration cam,? I've never heard that term before.
Yes my 2012 custom has the bigger tires, and mag style wheels. Also has the 4.3 gal tank, which gives it the cruiser look. Got it at Brandywine HD.
Nice I like that
1998-03 Sportster S with twin plug Buell heads.
More fuel always helps
Great classic look on the 72!
But....that'll XR1200 is a beast.... I wouldn't insult a generous person by rejecting it as a gift
They went to rubber mounts in 04
I own a 2016 roadster, and it is my favorite. Styling in minimalist and suspension is best in class.
Great style

Good times.
Hi from the UK. 883 Iron I have. 883 Iron is what I would rank at No 1. Mind you, mine is staged to buggery and goes like the clappers!
But the most comfortable one I ever drove was the 72
Just bought a 72
I have a stock 2000 1200S with factory screamin' eagle factory mods. The only downer s that it's Harley orange. But on the plus side, it has only 10 K on the clock. I'm currently getting it tuned, but it has an apparently unattainable Keihin 40mm butterfly carb. I can't find a rebuild kit.
That's a good one 👍
I absolutely love my 2021 883, and will never get rid of it. Will probably install Hammer 1275 kit and cams in the future.
The nightster is pretty awesome. Great info
The HD XR 1200 Sportster is the Best Sportster ever
The Iron 883.......has the most authentic feel in my opinion, looks are to die for and huge capability for mods
Probably the biggest seller too
The old iron head 1970 Hardtail sweet ride 1100CU
That piggy backed off of the Nightster with the blacked out trim
Harleys Roadster is my favourite of the Sportster line. But my favourite motorcycle with a “Sportster” engine would be Buells XB12R.
The buells were pretty cool
I really like the Iron 883. My bike is an 06 883, last of the carburetors which I like and I like the mag wheels. It has chrome but I have black handle bars and it has the peanut which I also love the look of. The 883 engine is definitely enough power for me. Thanks for your video.
That's awesome sounds good 👍
I love my 2005 XL1200R, previous was a 2001 XL883C and it was ok, but this 1200R is, just perfect😍
A fantastic and informative video on the different models in the sportster range. Great for newcomers to Harley like myself. I was perplexed until I saw this great video. Thank you!
Thanks for stopping by
For looks ballance and direct power I'm saying the 883C 100yr anniversary 2003 silver & Black. But for sheer power and ridability the xr 1200. The iconic colour way was also a winner.
Love those black and silver 03s
Anyone who said you can't tour 72 sportster, is lying I have the 72 ane rode it all the way from LA to San Francisco over 600 miles one way and made it just fine.
so disappointed in this video. from the title I expected you to discuss performance, suspension, braking, reliability, frame mount vs rubber mount, carb vs efi, so many great discussion points. alas you might as well had your wife do this video, oooo I love this paint scheme ! oh the chrome vs black! smmfh
Yup
So true 😅
2004 sportster, saddleman seat, Memphis shades detachable windshield, Harley saddle bags, stage 2 tune, Vance and Hines shorts. I've had many bikes over the years, i was a big time adrenaline junkie. This is my favorite bike! I sold a goldwing aspencade and bought it. I will never sell this bike!
Right on!
That was my first bike.
I have a 2021 forty eight and it’s my first Harley and I love it.
Right on 👍
Proud owner of a lil 883 iron here .
I dig the 48 special much more than the regular 48 fa sho
Agree with your selection! Especially the favourite... XR 1200, especially in black and chrome!
The the narrow frames are the ones the build to drag race preferably 97 to 2003 that should tell you something for people who like the split frame. You can have them!
Just picked up a 93 Sportster. Carbie, Chrome, Spoked wheels...my kind of Sportster
Greetings from the jersey shore, enjoyed the vid. Had a few sportsters, loved every one of them. Bought used, paid cash. Current ride is 2008 xl1200r, gets my bias vote.
Jersey in the house!
The best Harley sportster is the one you got :) Got'ta love your bike :)
Yeah limited gallons is tough
I had that 72. Same gold flake. It was a fun bike but tons of gas stops. I put 30k miles on that bike.
Nice 🤟 🤟 🤟
Did you put a rack on the back for a gas can?
Philly area? This is one of my fav Sportster vids just because of your #1 pic. I'm retired from Harley Davidson...own 4 XR1200's...and they're just wonderful bikes and the power is incredible. Greetings from Lancaster County Amishland
Nice I make my way out there every once in a while
@@TheMotoJawn Let me know if you're ever headed out this direction again and breakfast or lunch on me.
The 48 got it's name because of that little tank. That style was first used in 1948 on the Harley Hummer.
The best for sure is the one you customize to your own personal taste
True
Yeah man. I have never seen a stock sportster anywhere . That's the beauty of the sportster , you make it your own !!
09 Black XR named TYPHON
13 White XR named PEARL
17 Black Iron 883. PIGLET
02 White Hugger. LOLLIPOP
LOVE SPORTY's.
That's a good line up 🤟
AND a '03 FATBOY
100yr. Anniversary in Black and Sterling, THEY ALL GET ALONG!
I have a 2013 iron with S&S 1200 kit it’s such a fun bike and can carve then curves up like nothing them baggers don’t stand a chance on the back roads
08 1200 custom. Solid chrome rear wheel 21" spoke front 105 anniversary.
That's was a good anniversary year
I ride a 115 anniversary Sportster 48!😊
Right on 🤙
Your number 5 is my number 1. Thanks for the lowdown! Since they don't make it anymore maybe it will be collectable down the road.
👍👍👍
Yeah I think I saw a picture of that
1200t. Best all around bike I've ever owned. My 72' was super sexy but wasn't a very practical bike.
Very true
That’s the key takeaway. The “best” will be different for everyone.
I've had quite a few sportsters and TBH they all kinda feel the same. My current XR1200X is pretty fun to ride.
I’m bias but love my 883 Custom with the teardrop tank, but would love to have a Iron 1200 it’s so cool 😎
I'm partial more for the 1200 and peanut tank. But let's be honest, you can't go wrong !
@@TheMotoJawn yes and I've done the engine to a 1200 😄
Best = 1985 Sportster / Roadster XLS, 1000 Iron Head, Factory larger teardrop style tank with centre console, Black / Gold trim with Badge, ...I purchased new in 85’ ...I was 20 years old, shouldn’t have sold, a rare BEAST.
Loved my 81 XLS ironhead Roadster
2005 roadster with 1/4 faring 70 hp 76 torque best sportster ever I love the look!
The best sporty is the one you make your own!! You know....88" with ported heads, domed pistons, XR crank and so on and so on...:)
XR1200. Wish I had one. Didn’t have the money when they came out. Then they became hard to get.
Or was it called xl1200s?
The adjustable suspension and slightly hopped up motor one. Inverted forks and dual brakes.
XR1200 X it was called even more rare than the XR1200
I own a 2009 HD XR1200 in Denim Grey. I love it! A blast to ride and Fun.but nothing for Greenhorns.this Bike wants to be riden and needs all attention cause its powerful
@@StephanHeinemann1 lucky you. I’ll find one eventually.
@@TeensierPython do it it’s worth it.
Good luck 🤞
Find a good XR and you will have Fun 🤩!!
Enjoy Life cause Life is too short to be unhappy
Mine wasn't on the list lol. 2001 1200c. It's not the same as the custom on this list. 3.3 gallon tank. Big front spoke rim, solid rim with fat tire in the back, forward controls.
I ride a 2022 -883 . Love it but for me it's the 2003 that does it for me.
Nice! 🤟🤟
Best one is the one I have! 87 1100
Thank you ! For me, I hate the look of a front fat tire.
Those buells were awesome fore sure.
I'm partial to the 1200 custom with the fat 5 spoke mag wheels 🤷♂️
I like that too. Bigger tank as well
XR1200 has always been the only Sportster Id love to have in the garage.
Was surprised to see the nightster so high up on your list but I’m going to pick mine up this weekend my first road bike and so excited
That's awesome great choice. Enjoy it.
Ride safe, and congratulations
