A Day in the Life of a Microsoft Software Engineer | Seattle
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 сер 2022
- Watch a day in my life as a software engineer at Microsoft’s headquarters near Seattle. While I am based in Silicon Valley, I sometimes travel to the Redmond headquarters in person, and I hope you enjoy a sneak peak into all the cool stuff at the Redmond Campus.
To those wondering: No, I am not an intern. I am a full-time employee. I know I have a baby face. Don’t remind me. Also, I may or may not still be an engineer. #DayInTheLife #SoftwareEngineer #microsoft
Also, all the experiences, thoughts, and views displayed in this video are purely my own and don’t represent the company.

25% coding, 10% eating/drinking, 65% looking for a place to sit
😁😁
Still he hates his life , and btw why he can't do work from home ??
facts 💀💀💀
There should probably be a minimum of 5% badging into different buildings and rooms as well.
This is only the work-life balance of these product based companies.
As someone that works in a stuffy, dated office building surrounded by cubicles, this really shows how innovative big tech companies are in creating a comfortable environment to be productive!
But the funny thing is they're not productive at all
Really I don’t even notice because I’m too buried in code and my favorite part is debugging
They are less productive because they don’t just sit and code
As someone who works from home - all the innovation in the world aint making me commute again.
@@danielberry9610 word man! As developers all we want is the comfort of our houses, a cup of coffee and write our code in peace
That's a very very calm and smooth working day, as a petroleum engineer my day is full of working with a huge load of operations, production issues, meetings/communications, and presentations in addition to other long-term tasks. I can barely take a rest during my one-hour lunch break because there's always so much to do.
Sounds like you should learn to code and develop skills that these companies are looking for, rather than complaining
@@boiimcfacto2364 right. I should be grateful if I have that kind of job like him

Man, never thought working at Microsoft would be such a journey. I always imagined working at Microsoft would be more like sitting in a desk all day and typing stuff .
And you are right
What you've seen in this video is how things are like in Head Quaters of the company. Elsewhere it is most likely exactly how you desribe it.
@@Victor-yb1iw that's just sad. u work in microsoft?
It probably is. This guy is just adding stupid stuff to get view count. Like who seriously tapes waking up, heck who sleeps with contacts on?
@@StaryPutejtos he barely did shit tho could you just grind out your work for 5-6 hours instead of just walking around and taking breaks, and he gets home at 7pm does it take that long?
Thanks for making this video and giving is a glimpse into your day. This was incredibly enjoyable to watch!! As someone who works in a place where you see the same 4 walls all the time. I often envy those who get to switch scenery often 😕

Had a Great time watching it😂😁😊. It felt Original and you made a relaxed balance of work and life ,giving it a laid-back ,chill vibe .Looking forward for more videos👍.Good luck!
I like your simplicity. Your whole life is on the Microsoft Surface Book, coding, communication, youtube. Amazing!
A good video topic that I think would be great is your career path to getting this job.
Now that's what I call "Quality Of Life", very different than what I experienced, hope I can have same or better position in the future! Great Video!
very proud of you Vinicius, this city is beautiful, a big hug
Well that is very different to my days at Microsoft in the late 80's. We lived there after moving to the 4 buildings on their new campus. 80-100 hour weeks was crazy. I was on the OS/2 kernal so debugging was a fun challenge. Good luck to you.
I'm on my way to work right now. You made my day!
Probably the loneliest Day in a office video i've ever seen😂.
Keep it up, gotta keep up the grind.
Awesome Vlog, keep going!! Good to see a day without hectic b2b meetings..
This is my fist video of your channel and I love it! I'm about to begin my Software Engineering journey in January 2023. Maybe I'll see you in a year at Microsoft.
Subscribed btw. I mean why not? 😂
Cool video man, like the humble approach of actually showing that sometimes you can't always solve problems by yourself and need help from colleagues, i've started as a software engineer, just hitting a year, and it does have its ups and downs, but definitely a priviledge to be in the field
Appreciate it, I agree that it's definitely a huge privilege. I sometimes take it for granted, but I really like your perspective.
Quick question: Do you have any advice/feedback on the latest video?
@@browntechdaddy yeah really enjoyed the video, very in-depth and honest, edits made it way better to stay focused through the details haha, keep it up mate

It was a amazing one bro I like the fact that the video was simple and engaging
And don't worry about people saying you just code a lottery bit they do not how much effort or hard it take to learn and master it and be on the level of hq. Of Microsoft
I'm using Microsoft's different software for at least last 15 years though today I felt Microsoft from very near. Even though I'm from Bangladesh. Lovely Video! I enjoyed.
After Microsoft you can now be a influencer, really good video! I am a software developer myself and the vibe from those FANG-like companies is just insane and nice. Hoping to work there once in the future!

@@greenboykrish4346 I think you can't go wrong with either! Pick the one you find most interesting from what you've heard about the 2 and decide which one to go with. Most people end up being able to do similar jobs afterward anyways! :)
@@greenboykrish4346 engineering also involves the physical aspects of computers, ie circuits etc. while computer science mostly focuses on the programming aspects. computer engineering has a slightly higher starting salary but both are great paths and will yield a successful career with careful planning and curiosity for learning!
@@greenboykrish4346 bro y diploma
@@greenboykrish4346 hey man you definitely need to put computer science, computer engineering focuses more on the electric portion on computers such as their physical build. if you are wanting to become a software engineer you definitely want to do computer science and nothing else even if they say "computer science information systems" that's more IT. you can also talk to an academic counselor who's from the school you're applying to about it.

I think this is the first tech day in the life vlog by a guy I've seen
Hey Loved the video and editing.
Everything I loved in this campus specially the conference room.
But one thing I noticed which is really not good is the amount of plastic waste it's generating in a day.
So instead of keeping so many disposable plastic cups with lids, MS should promote employees to bring in their own Mugs.
Few cups could be kept for the guest though.
Lunches can be served in plates when choosing dine-in options.
Just come and see...gulf countries only live on disposable cups glass and plate ..plastic everywhere but not at home off course
@izhankhan305 Never been to a gulf country. It's really bad not thinking about the environment. If disposables are needed then Gulf must come with a sustainable product. Products made out of plant waste that gets quicly decomposed.
Microsoft cups/plates are compostable

I am a 1st year student of BTech computer science. After watching your video, my motivation has become high. I just want to become a software engineer like you. Please tell me how to study so that I can become a successful software engineer.
Thank you for sharing this.
You life's very exhausting but I very very love your life. First you are a software engineer and work in Microsoft. I think you are very hardworkind and when I watch your videos , I want to study. Thank you for make this video. Hopefully I would be a very good engineer too.
Thank you for the support! I think you'll be a great engineer too
Yes he sure would be hardworking but Since most of you do not know,The actual CTC is the 2nd year CTC and this is important because if you make a switch / look for a new job, then this actual CTC is used to consider for new offer. The high CTC is not taken into consideration…
Let’s say at Microsoft your quoted CTC is Rs 39,40,000 (~39.4 lakhs).
Base Salary: Rs 12,00,000 which is further divided into two components:
Basic salary and flexible Base Plan (FBP)
Basic: Rs 4,72,000 and FBP: Rs 5,28,000
Joining bonus of Rs 3,00,000 (Rs 1,50,000 in the first month and Rs 1,50,000 after 1st year)
Stock Award: $30,000 (given over 4 years) ~ Rs 22,00,000-23,00,000
Relocation bonus: Rs 1,00,000 (given if you are coming from another city)
Note: This is not included in CTC so this is extra as you will get this only if you claim it.
Performance bonus: Rs 2,40,000 (20% of Base salary)
Note: 20% is the maximum if your company (Microsoft in this case) hits its overall goal. It can be less than 20% and even 0%. So, it varies.
There are other components where you can get extra money provided you claim those. These are not included in CTC. These include:
Medical expenses (Within a given limit)
Travel expenses
and others.
Therefore, the following components are added to arrive at the final CTC
Base Salary: Rs 12,00,000
Joining bonus: Rs 3,00,000
Stock Award: Rs 22,00,000
Performance bonus: Rs 2,40,000
This gives the CTC as Rs 39,40,000.
The following components are one-time that is these components are not considered in the CTC of your 2nd year at Microsoft. So, the 2nd year CTC is always less than the 1st year CTC:
Joining bonus: Rs 3,00,000
Stock Award: Rs 22,00,000
Therefore, your 2nd year CTC will be Rs 14,40,000..
In New tax regime, you cannot do tax saving.
In Old tax regime, you can do tax saving like in Fixed deposit, Interest in loans and much more. This is useful only if you have to pay a large amount of interest for loans like education loan, house loan and others.
Let us calculate the minimum salary:
You are doing no tax saving and are in New tax regime.
You did not receive any bonus (0%).
Then, you get the base salary of Rs 12,00,000 only. On this, you pay tax of 20%.
Tax = 2.5 * 0.05 + 2.5 * 0.1 + 2.5 * 0.15 + 2 * 0.2 = 1.15
So, you pay Rs 1.15 lakhs in salary. Your in-hand salary is Rs 10.85 lakhs. So, your monthly in-hand salary is Rs 90,417.
Let us calculate maximum salary:
Let us assume you do tax saving investments and are in Old tax regime. If you have loan and give interests, you can save tax on the interest up to FBP.
So, you have to pay tax on Basic salary of Rs 4,72,000.
Tax = 2.22 * 0.05 = Rs 11,100
You get the performance bonus of Rs 2,40,000 and tax is deducted on it. So, in-hand bonus is Rs 2,28,000.
So, in-hand salary is Rs 11,88,900 per year and it is Rs 99,000.
Therefore, your in-hand monthly salary range from Rs 90,417 to Rs 99,000.
Your 2nd year CTC / actual CTC will be Rs 14,40,000 per year and not Rs 33,40,000 per year.
Note -You’ll be getting stocks worth 22 lakhs but you’ll have to pay 30% tax +10 % long term capital gains tax on them and if you leave the company in between the unvested stocks will be forfeited
It’s great to get into these product based companies ( better than service based ones ) but you should be knowing all these things
In usa it’s same story but different maths
