Interesting to see how nicely your day is broken up by different activities. In Belgium for instance, most engineers work ~9/5 or some variant of it. Average working hours is 8/day, or more. However, days are more monotonous. Start at 8AM->12:30PM | lunch | 1PM->4/5PM | -> done. Since I start early, I can leave work usually at 4PM which gives me the feeling I have a lot of time left of my day to spend on personal things but often these don't happen as planned or intended. On the other hand, your day ends "late" (to my standards) where I'd feel I have no personal time left, however, you managed to incorporate that personal time (like the gym or walking the dog) during the day/working hours. So almost seems like a win-win, except for family time.
Exactly, this is ok if you are single, and to have longer working day, included personal activities. But, if you have a family, this is waste of time. Job is job, and private life ( family life ) has to be separate. In reality, 8h of working day, average is 6h of productive hours.

Amazon has a lot of negative reviews from the past. But they definitely have fixed a lot of things. I am 3 months in working at a FC and I love it. Everything they have to offer and treating their employees along with ensuring leadership and recognition are strong really makes the workplace feel amazing! Overall the company is amazing any they provide amazing stuff. Their thought process on making work as simple as possible is what makes the workplace 10x better. Long hours but a nice spread in breaks makes the day go by easier. Your video is a great example. 😀

Been some time since you uploaded this, but I'm amazed your workday is this chill, makes me wonder if all big IT-oriented companies treat their developers this well. You work 2 less hours than my bro who's also a software developer if we take into account the in-between gym and relaxing hour, and very likely have WAY more perks from Amazon. Of course, we live in Mexico, so yeah... I won't comment from the sysadmin point of view though, I know our work is vastly different, even if it sounds like the same thing to society. Happy for ya to see you doing good!
Seattle looks like an amazing place to settle down, I've never been but I've been to a few different places in the US and loved it. Great video Albert, thanks for sharing your life as an engineer
I live 45 min from Seattle, I don't even visit anymore because of how sketchy it is. I would never move there. Not a bad place to commute for work though, as you can see the high income areas are fancy if you don't stray far from your path.
This is wild to see and the duality of Amazon employee roles. This seems so chill and relaxed yet productive at the same time, but the warehouse employees and drivers are overworked and underpaid. As a former Amazon employee who worked in a packaging warehouse it was grueling and unbearable. You have insane and unreasonable expectations and time quotas to meet which seems normal for a role like that but once you SEE these quotas and expectations you will understand.
Truly amazing video! I'm an aspiring software engineer here and I am inspired by how you can take things easy even in such a demanding career. And Jonna Jinton videos are S-tier when it comes to going back to the basics of how to live.
Yeah.... these videos are NEVER realistic. They are setup and scripted for the video and glamorize it. I don't think there's a single realistic "day in the life if a SE" video.

I am surprised at how much of a work life balance you guys at Amazon seem to have despite the bad reputation and what you hear about the job all the time.. We in Germany do not have at all such a balance, like with home office it is basically 8-9 hours (without counting break) full on hard work. I can almost never do so many breaks because of the heavy workload..
As a electrical engineering student in Taiwan, I have heard that many students graduated from our department are now work in TSMC, Mediatek…etc. Although working in those places could be well paid but the work load may be very heavy and it is impossible to keep work and life balanced. (Working for almost 12 hours a day)Thus, I am now working hard with my proficiency(IC design) and English skill, hoping to work in America or Europe instead of Asia for a work-life balanced job.
Yeah I suppose I had bad luck with the team being all the time extremely under pressure. So work life balance also is not great for me despite working in Germany..
@@ytl3388 yeah Asia seems to be even worse I see it in my company as well. But America seems a bit different perhaps from Europe in terms of work life balance or these UA-camrs just show it that positively for the FAANG companies I don’t know but for me work and life is nothing like they show on UA-cam.
Its not really like this, not for everyone. He's gotta be management, or senior. Think about it, how much work could possibly be done working this way. I'm sure he gets to cruise life while everyone under him is doing all the real work.
Hey, very nice production value. Do you ever get bored of this kind of a lifestyle? It seems very monotone from the given perspective. I'm asking since I'm studying cs myself and the closer I get to graduating, the harder it is for me to know if I made the right choice. Mainly because I can see the work taking a tall on most of the people in the industry, and mental health is not really my forte at the very moment, considering that I'm not even working yet, I don't know how I could balance things out when I get a job. Add to that the whole pandemic situaton shifting the workspace even further into the online realm, which makes it even more unbearable, I assume. If it's not too personal, how do you cope with it?
Hey there, great question! Please don't assume that my everyday is exactly like this video, I would say everyday for me is a bit different, this was just one of the days. Obviously with covid, we're still not back to normal working in the office yet so that would change at some point so should be more people interactions in person as well. For me software engineering is just part of my life, I would suggest find another hobby that you're really passionate about, for me that's photography and cinematography and travel, so I always find doing these things outside of work help me a lot. good luck with graduation and job hunting :)
I was already sus at this Day in the Life. And I was right to be suspicious because, "None of my coworkers are here yet". That's the real day in the life of a software engineer. You're living an ideal life, your coworkers are living the real life, lol.

I know the ATA program is highly selective for admissions so for backup I wanted to enroll in MeritAmerica Java Development school as well, any advice you could give would be awesome! I hope one day to be doing what you are doing!
Hey there! I'm glad you found it helpful or inspiring! I'd recommend taking some online classes on data structures and algorithms it helps with understanding CS fundamentals and interviews. And if you're looking to become a web developer or some specific niche then I'd focus on developing those skills, learn reactJS and typescript/javascript etc. But yeah keep doing what you're doing, seems like you're looking to get all the trainings you need and good luck with interviews!
@@alberthbyang One of the things I am finding pretty frustrating is what to focus on for studying, alot from what I have read is that the SDE role in Amazon focuses around the fundamentals of Java, but when you say full stack is that something that is completely different then the role I would be in? I guess I am just trying to get a better understanding, lol
@@TacoLegs haha I don't know where you heard that but that's not really true. Java is just one of the popular languages used at Amazon but we also use Typescript, python, Ruby, Scala etc. Languages aren't the most important thing but CS fundamentals are. 😀

Yeah I think every tech company could have heavy work load doesn't matter where and it varies from team to team as well🤓
It depends on the team you’re in. Some have it bad.
So between coffee, meeting, lunch and gym you start working at 5pm and leave before 7! 😂
Woaw..
That workstyle would never have worked here in denmark.
But it was fascinating to see.
I love your dog btw xD
I'm applying. Got rejected many times but I hope I can make it in this time.
best of luck!!

@@TacoLegs ofc! yes I'm full stack.
