Veil of Maya has established one of the most unique sounds within their genre of music; nobody can deny that. Mark is such a badass song writer in my opinion.
It’s crazy going back to this video after so many years. Some of Marc’s riffs from Common Mans Collapse and [id] are still some of my favorite riffs of all time
Marc is completely right about the breakdowns at 1:33 . Ask me to play one of the faster break downs from my band at a moments notice and I would need a moment. Playing it with the whole band and head banging a but to keep the time makes it all come together.
+Colin Michael that's EXACTLY what I thought when he said that. He is totally spot on about that and if you play in a metal band and write your own complex breakdowns, you would understand. 10/10 would recommend
there's no doubt that legendary Emperor has had significant influnece on the many bands and musicians, regrdless the genre.Their music has been one of a kind.
These breakdowns are so freakin hard to get a grip on. There seems to be no logical explanation to the different rhythms used at first sight.. love this man though and am seeing them this autumn!
+cha4kn When you get used to them, they all have a certain logic, you just have to figure out the "catch" for each riff; what's actually repeating and where it starts and ends. A lot of riffs start like halfway through, which is really confusing :D
i smoked a joint with these guys at a studio in chicago, before i knew how famous they were. when i met them i was first introduced to their music. so it was pretty dope.
Marc is awesome he looks like lost and he does a little laugh at the end of some parts. To think the genius behind these awesome ass riffs is a goof ball xD
Faces: 0:582:29 Masterpiece: 0:335:127:23 WTF he is talking about?! : 6:50 - 7:15 He is my idol, talking without a meaning and play guitar like a FUCKING RAMBO!! great way to live your life..
@jheilbroify i was wondering the same thing. im guessing he's talking about mark the lines and the interviewer asked him something about the song was 'structured' or something.
Man, I think it's great what he is saying at around 6:50. I can totaly understand what he means. Don't you have such song or records that remaind you of a certain time in your life? Some records are my favorite, not because the nesessarily that great, but because they "take me back in time" :)
well they ARE working on a new album...and that new riff sounds sick. i hope it sounds nothing like ID or Common Mans Collapse...that being said i hope its newer and evolving sound. something that makes every band musically talented as writers ID was my favorite album last year. hope they do smoething refreshing again thatll catch me off-guard
he is playing a Tsmith guitar, but I think he swapped this one for a newer Tsmith , it looks the same but with the VoM logo on 12th fret. Its a custom guitar but he doesnt really play it anymore. He plays jackson guitars now, he still does have the new Tsmith guitar and his Ibanez's though
Are you serious? He literally said "heres some if my chords from Mark the lines" not even 5 seconds before your time stamp. Try actually paying attention to the video first
Veil of Maya has established one of the most unique sounds within their genre of music; nobody can deny that. Mark is such a badass song writer in my opinion.
Yeah, so they are so technical. 👍
I remember back in 2012 when I first heard his riffs, it blew my fucking mind. He is one of the best rhythm guitarists ever lol.
Dude yes, literally the first time I watched this video it blew my mind.
hahaha no people CAN definitely deny that dude
They were. Important Asterix.
I come back to this video for that face at 0:57. Mark plays with such confidence it’s infectious.
I love watching Marc talk about Mark the Lines, you can really tell how proud he is of that song. Their best track IMO.
It’s crazy going back to this video after so many years. Some of Marc’s riffs from Common Mans Collapse and [id] are still some of my favorite riffs of all time
marc's riff writing back in the day is still unbeatable today.
I wish they’d go back to that style. So unique and amazing
Muscle Memory is a real thing! Kiddos, practice makes perfect, and once you get a riff or a beat or whatever in your hands, it's there! Enjoy it!
one of the cleanest players I have heard! Ever note and chord sounds so clear!
he actually played quite sloppy in this video. He skipped a lot of notes. If you've listened to the album enough, you'd notice.
Great sarcasm
I'm pretty sure that was GM 1 but I might be wrong @@_EightySix

I love his tone... it's something different and awesome and is a big part of the sound of veil imo.
Ahaha! I don't know why I geeked so hard over. "These are some of the chords I use in...Marc the Lines huhuh"
I fuckin love this dude
Here's some of my chords in
m a r k the l i n e s
Miss this VoM
that tone has SOO MUCH PRESSURE!
I just LOVE IT! Best deathcore tonefor sure!
i swear he has the sweetest tone ever
@5:00 he said "yeah our basist has a 7 string bass lol". thats more strings than the guitarist has lol
cory beckmann I agree that is kinda screwed up
well, they use 7s now so it evens itself out haha
there's no doubt that legendary Emperor has had significant influnece on the many bands and musicians, regrdless the genre.Their music has been one of a kind.
Thanks for your awesome playing Marc
I love his effects man. Tasty sound.
his guitar has an AMAZING tone!!!
I agree. I was extra stoked when I saw that he is in the new guitar world as well as them tabbing out Unbreakable. He totally deserves it!
I've never seen Marc play before, and I've been playing all these chords for years. Crazy..
Saw them in Tempe last night, some serious business behind his playing. Love the way he "thinks" with his playing also, I seem to do that also.
@Oblivion262
They changed the riff a little, but it is on Divide Paths (track two)
I fucking love him so much. One of the most if not the most talented musicians in modern metal
probably one of the most under rated guitar players in the world.
It's a constant flow of music theory and perfect techniques.
This dude writes a lot of really good guitar parts!
These breakdowns are so freakin hard to get a grip on. There seems to be no logical explanation to the different rhythms used at first sight.. love this man though and am seeing them this autumn!

Down pick them individually at a slower speed and then you figure it out at normal speed
This dude is seriously unreal.
His sound is just... perfect
When I first heard these guys, I heard the recording of what I hear in my head.... now I know how to put it to my guitar ... fucking CHEERS MATE !!!
7:19 Divide Paths
That new riff has me STOKED!
its taken me days to learn the mark the lines chords lol but i finally did it! they flow so beautifully
@Buchy1369 there are tabs... click on the link in the description and scroll all the way to the bottom and there they are
probably the best tone achieved for the genre.
those chords in mark the lines are so pretty
So much respect for mentioning Emperor.
Finally, part 2! sick!
i smoked a joint with these guys at a studio in chicago, before i knew how famous they were. when i met them i was first introduced to their music. so it was pretty dope.
Marc is awesome he looks like lost and he does a little laugh at the end of some parts. To think the genius behind these awesome ass riffs is a goof ball xD
This dude is crazy good!
I met up with Marc, Danny, and Sam in Houston on summer slaughter. such cool dudes.
great tone on the dist. is like a dry distortion and it goes really fine with his chords , otherwise too many dist would skip the notes
00:58 Marc's face- awwww yeahhhh!
i love how he plays he intro to divide paths off their new album at the end :D
can't waaaait for some new shit!!!
part 2, finally!
marc is amazing : )
Faces: 0:58 2:29
Masterpiece: 0:33 5:12 7:23
WTF he is talking about?! : 6:50 - 7:15
He is my idol, talking without a meaning and play guitar like a FUCKING RAMBO!! great way to live your life..
@theafterlife1000 Its a TSmith with Seymour Duncan Blackout pickups but i dont know what model.
thumbs up for the new riff!!
This guy is awesome!
The new riff he plays sounds like the same riff he plays on divide paths
Manny It is the same riff. The album was released in 2012, this video was posted in 2011.
T Smith custom. Been trying to find out about it. There was something about it on sevenstring, but no specs
Beautiful guitar
@mysteriousDSF I forgot to say its incredible!
One of the few bands that I don't mind using constant breakdowns, not when they're as fantastic and technical as these
Very creative
@jheilbroify i was wondering the same thing. im guessing he's talking about mark the lines and the interviewer asked him something about the song was 'structured' or something.

Can someone tell me about that gap with two dots right before the locking nut?
Zero fret i think
What pickups seymour duncan? But what model?
seymour duncan blackouts
that guitar is so nice, i wish i had marks skills!
I would love to get a tab of the last riff.
look up "divide paths tab".
@ryan199424 It's the bridge. He can 'tilt' it. Can't remember what it's called though :P
What song is he talking about at 6:25?
His face at 0:59
"Oh, I know you likes the fudge."
Darn, I can't find any info apart from a facebook with no info. But glad you found out anyway.
This guy is fucking amazing, I would pay a lot of money to have his skill.
Omg he plays the riffs so much faster than the original songs
@Oblivion262 Divide Paths. Really good song, but really short.
he has mastered the instrument
I love how he played marc the line sloppily and then flawlessly played Divide paths which is much harder
The new riff is from the song "Divided Paths".
It's like, ahmm like... you know like... Ok I'm going to like this video.
cool sound cool playing ! what is his cabinet amp ??? sounds awesome
well they ARE working on a new album...and that new riff sounds sick. i hope it sounds nothing like ID or Common Mans Collapse...that being said i hope its newer and evolving sound. something that makes every band musically talented as writers ID was my favorite album last year. hope they do smoething refreshing again thatll catch me off-guard
What's the name of the guitar marc's using?
Custom T-Smith guitar.
Anyone know what kind of pick he uses? As far as like thin, medium, heavy, jazz...etc.
he was talking about the song structures of mark the lines. he was trying to explain that there wasn't much of a structure to the song
what i want to know is what kind of guitar he's playing in this video
he is playing a Tsmith guitar, but I think he swapped this one for a newer Tsmith , it looks the same but with the VoM logo on 12th fret. Its a custom guitar but he doesnt really play it anymore. He plays jackson guitars now, he still does have the new Tsmith guitar and his Ibanez's though
thumbs up with you think that the new riff is too short in "divided paths" !
What picks do you use?
What's that little space after the nut for?
We bow in its aura
Look at the face he makes right before he starts talking in the beginning. It looks like he's thinking "Nigga wtf you want" hahah :p
TS? Is that a Timo Schramm guitar?
If not, anyone know where it came from?
@pierroddu56 He also changed it slightly...
What is this song "Structures" that they speak of? I must find it...
i understand what he means on the albums bringing you back and he doesnt hold back on his riffs , we all need to try harder
what guitar is this, or at least what kind of bridge, because if i'm not mistaken, he's bending down by pulling on it, which is pretty cool
This man, is insane.
That unbreakable riff is like.. musical ADD
Good Life To Veil Of Mayaa !!! .-.
Melody from ID kinda sounds like The Scourge theme
You're very right
can someone tell me the song at the beginning please?!
Thanks man!
What is his guitar?? Such a nice one! Thanks mark, i have not played guitar since i watched this. :P
very cool
@DJIsher1 Oh i know haha, i just mean i know a floyd rose comes with a whammy bar and for some reason Marc just wasn't using it
What song is this 5:52?
Are you serious? He literally said "heres some if my chords from Mark the lines" not even 5 seconds before your time stamp. Try actually paying attention to the video first
