Hey guys. I just wanted to apologize for my playing on this video not being up to par. I had just woken up five minutes before the interview. I had played that TSmith guitar once and had not yet set it up. I was not using my own amp settings and I did not prepare a lesson. We finished five minutes before I had to run to get on stage. needless to say it was a stressful day. Hopefully I can redeem myself soon :)
Dude you're a master of your own style. I'm sure many guitarist who attempted covering your songs broke a ligament or two.
so strange to see this comment almost a decade later.
I've been coming back to these two vids throughout the years as I've progressed with my own playing.
I was about to comment "in an age where everyone gives guitarists shit for recording at half-speed, Marc was out here playing his riffs almost twice as fast."
*_IN AN INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO, NO LESS._*
*Legendary*
@@AlisterTate Yes!
Don’t sweat it man this is some phenomenal playing
What you talking bout bro ....u killed it 🤣🤣🤣
God this guy does not have the recognition he deserves. Every time i watch this video im amazed by the little things i did not see and how much technique it takes to play these songs and how much is actually going on.
Even now bro, even now 🤦🏾♂️
He has a bit more recognition now, but very tru
That's some impressive rhythm playing right there..
How does he come up with these riffs. It's crazy
You obviously never heard of yngwie malmsteen or jason becker or even marty friedman
12092DannyH
Is it your objective to bash on Marc's skills because from what I'm seeing from your comments, you're not fond of the idea that people think he's an exemplary guitar player.
Yeah no shit i've heard of those guitarists. doesn't mean i don't think Marc is a good guitarist as well? (Yngwie malmsteen is an arrogant chode however js)
12092DannyH blah blah, sick of hearing this.
12092DannyH Ynwie Malmsteen is probably the most boring guitarist I have ever heard haha. Yes, he is a technically phenomenal, but there is zero emotion to any of it.
top 3 of my favorite guitarist Jason Richardson, Tosin Abasi, Marc Okubo
tad woods this sounds like something someone would say who just became a fan of metal
tad woods my favorite metal guitar player is jimi Hendrix
CheebaCheebaa that’s pretty ignorant considering they’re all phenomenal guitarists
@@malieekduuude right? They all have a unique play style and are all really good guitarist. They all play really clean and unlike certain guitarists.
Inserts Dave Davidson
I love how the last part turned out to be the opening riff for mikasa
Thanks for pointing that out.
This guys so chill. It's pretty great that he'll do stuff like this for his fans
I knew Marc was original, but after watching him play he truly is a very different and unique guitar player. His style is off the wall and totally awesome! Great video!
an inordinately underrated guitarist in the metal scene for sure.
His fingers are just dancing on that fretboard. Marc sure is one of the most influential tech metal guitarrists out there.
>tech metal
+cha4kn I'd say it's Technical Deathcore if you wanna be exact lol
+Prenner111 woah, you were one sensitive boy. Are you going to cry as well?
+Prenner111
He's definitely a big influence on the current metal scene
Marcello Chua Maybe thats why all the new metal sucks.
my god. he is legit. all those unique riff and style
He and Stephen Carpenter have that knack for finding the coolest sounding chords in the most odd shapes.
Yes! As well as Misha Mansoor lol. I'm pretty sure Marc and Bulb are both influenced by Deftones, Bulb for sure.
The first time I heard Marc play, it blew my fucking mind. Never heard anything like it before.
Wish they'd mic the amp directly. He picks so loudly. Mind blowing techniques.
@goku supersayan me too
His one of my favorite guitar players. He have his own style.
And you have your own style of English :)
@@MaxOberst hahahahhaa that's the funniest comment I've read in awhile
this video was one of the reasons i started to play the guitar, thank you marc and guitar messenger!
What's up this is mark from veil of maya you are watching guitar messenger (starts to shred fucking face like its nothing)
We NEED more of these! He is such a great unique guitar player and chill dude
This stuff is pretty hard, and then Mark goes and plays it faster than the recordings. Wtf.
He wrote it lol...damn good stuff!
I absolutely love Veil's line up. Every member is so amazingly talented individually. There's no weakest link!!!
I'm black, and I love metal, like seriously! When I see other black people playing like this, I fucking salute
I love Marc's style, Nobody else I've heard writes riffs like he does, they're awesome
Marc pisses me off because he's so fucking good that he can loop himself live. He's one of (if not THE most) accurate pickers in guitar playing, to date.
I've never seen anyone else loop THEMSELVES live the way Marc does.
I really doubt it, you really need to look at John Petrucci and his picking technique, left and right hand synchronization is spot on, tis guy is all over the place. He is not and will never be " the most accurate picker" to bold a statement my friend
Tosin abasi loops himself too he's pretty damn good at it haha
Ikr! He makes it sound like VoM has like 3 guitarists!!! Plus he is always a happy guy I just want to hug him lmao
Torn Horizon "One of"
Lito'sForum I always thought there was 2 guitars in VOM lol!!
just listened to the vommon man's collapse & [id] for the first time and i fell in love with his playing....not because of his techniques, speed, accuracy, etc but because of his creativity & unorthodox approaches in riffing and he knows how to think outside of the box instead of following the conventional 'core'/metal' riffings..
Yo someone must be jealous or something to be talking shit about Marc so much, but man this music is great and really well composed, I thinks it's fucking great
how did this man figure out how to play like this 11 possibly 20 years ago, like mans a real genius🙌
Mowgli is one of my favorite riffs ever
I met Marc last night at SFX, such a top bloke and nice guy!! so glad they came to Australia!! such an honor to see em live AND shake his hand!! \m/ VoM \m/
The chord passages and fill ins in his songs are just insane? WTF just happened??
completely raw , no backing track., Technique and style in exposition. Love this playthrough/tutorial
I've always wanted to know what kind of guitar is that... someone help me!!
tsmith
Marc okubo .. You are my example to follow..Greetings from Argentina !
"Six is enough, and eight is enough too. Whatever you want. Four can be enough. One can be enough, if you’ve got the imagination for it."
-Steve Vai
theres not enough videos of Marc on youtube. So underrated.
Tasty riffs, oh man
Veil Of Maya doesn't need anyone else, Marc is more than enough talent.
someone please tab out Mowgli like this. I learned it all wrong
Gavin Galloza - We have full, correct tabs for everything Marc plays in these videos here:
www.guitarmessenger.com/artist-masterclasses/veil-of-maya-marc-okubo-masterclass-part-1/
www.guitarmessenger.com/artist-masterclasses/veil-of-maya-marc-okubo-masterclass-part-2/
I made a guitar pro tab on ultimate guitar with the correct tabs
tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/v/veil_of_maya/mowgli_ver2_guitar_pro.htm
+Gavin Galloza Bro same, when i learned it, I used two different tabs and mixed the two together to what sounds most accurate
Ajani Brunner exactly and I mean it was kinda close but the tab on guitar messenger is perfect. this song is so fun to play haha
you also have to realize that this is the raw sound from his amp. on a record you hear a layered, compressed, expanded and fully eq'd sound. also, youre getting the BEST TAKE on the record. for just picking up a guitar and rolling, this dude is seriously competent
Pharrell is pretty good at guitar.
thisisonlyajokeplsdontkillme
Couple of years later and he has become Bruno Mars lol
Mirko Fustinoni in reality he is derrick rose's lost twin brother. I mean they're both from chicago shit who knows.
Lmao im almost died sir thank you
0:17
with pewds as the singer they cant go wrong
His name is Marc.... it is in the title
I love all kinds of talented guitar players, and this guy is one for sure.
I bet with how fast and technical Marc is, playing slow is a mindfuck. :D
no matter how many insane riffs i make or how fast and technical my playing gets mark okubo still puts me to shame everytime in this video. Thanks Marc for giving me something to work towards! :]
holy shit his stuff my not be crazy sweep picking or solo-y but his riffage and picking is another level of crazy haha
dude, you are such a new inspire for me.....I try to see , and feel my leed rythym as you do...i wish I can tewll the story like you on the fret board.
Mowgli riff is god tier
You can tell by the way he plays that he jams like this...which makes me feel better knowing that im not the only crazy one that doesnt do straight breakdowns while jamming... :D
I've always wanted to be able to write complex stuff like this, I can play fairly fast and could probably play stuff like this, I just have major trouble writing original stuff. Does anyone have any help/tips if so please help a fellow guitarist out, thanks guys
Think outside the box an do what you're good at. Outside the box means experiment with different chord voicings, scales that you construct, not what you rip off from other songs or basic majors and minors tht you learn from books. And try to find a groove or rhythm in everything you compose. Including leads and motifs. Arrangement is a whole mother beast, but coming up with originals shouldn't be that different. Just playing covers all the time will show people you're good but will take you nowhere trust
practice, you need to keep on writing.

Seriously just realized my jaw was dropped about the 4 minute mark when I noticed my mouth was dry. Thanks marc.
iv always wanted to know how he writes these riffs, like how does he come up with it? but now that i have seen this video i think he just tries to throw his fingers in different directions as fast as possible and it just makes fucking sense after he has a long enough seizure on the fret board. Fucking sick.
this is one of the coolest things ive ever seen
@marceatsfood lol dude, even after waking up you're still sick. The ability to play well after 5 minutes of waking up or without a warmup doesn't mean shit. You're still a ridiculous composer. Keep it up, you're an inspiration to many.
Marc is one of the best technical players of our time
0:16 singer looks like 2012 pewdiepie XD
9 years later I’m still impressed
Facts
BLACK METAL.
12092DannyH are you too stupid to understand a joke? he meant black metal by the fact he is black and playing metal....
vladi1Z
but hes brown...
Nate C he is Hawaiian
Justin Smith he's half japanese half black
12092DannyH Black metal is garbage... Boring as shit
Im new to Veil of Maya and i think I just found some real raw guitar inspiration. time to shred!
"This part's really easy..." I watched both videos and nowhere did I find this phrase relevant.
Dude i totally love your style i give thanks to the life for making me hear to Veil Of Maya.
Wassup this is Mark from Marijuana haha
his right hand picking is so precise.
Is that a fret after the locking nut? Wut...
BRO NO. STAPH. HALP. HI....
It keeps the guitar from going out of tune after locking the nut down.
+Hank Hill no it doesn't its for looks other wise they wouldn't have put inlays in ti
That's the cleanest I've heard him play 'its not safe to swim today'. Damn.
Hes half black half Japanese right?
You can see every specific feature.
Great left hand pinky and left arm position in relation to fretboard. Very classically trained. Makes for super efficient fretting movements!
I miss Brandon
wow simply amazed by this amazing player!
Damn he picks hard lol
I love how he says "It's kinda like singing" when he makes cords with drop tuning! Playing the Bass and the High Parts at the same time lol. I practically do the same thing, but he does it much much faster than I! Like Wow!!!
dude chill out, if you are trying to teach other people the riffs you need to slow the fuck down, you are playing it even faster than the originals wtf, so fast that even you play it wrong, haha
JulleHimself I think he was nervous lol. the young Okubo
Mannnnn I used to think Veil of Maya were one of the lesser talented bands on Sumerian but hot damn this dude oozes talent.
Djent...meh
Yes.
***** That's your opinion, and you're entitled to it. But meanwhile, in the _real_ world:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Djent
+Esteban Rincon old vom is more tech death metal wtf
Not as tech as other groups, like Cynic. Where do you think they go their name from?
+Esteban Rincon
I'm pretty sure that's a coincidence
Their bassist said in interview that VoM is named after a goddess or some shit lol
Cynic is good, but I've always seen that as more of Death Metal/Progressive Rock.
Exivious is good shit tho
That maj7 chord at the end sounds so awesome!
huge fan since the beginning love all their albums have em all and i think he has his own style idc what other people say rock on MARC!
the guy has talent i really love the style of the riffs and the chords and in general i love the band really nice guitar playing
i tried to learn the first riff from the tab in the description and wtf i never thought it would be this hard, 0:33 is a ridiculous finger stretch...this guy is ridiculous. i mostly play tech-death stuff like spawn of posession & gorod, to be honest i'm not a fan of deathcore and extremely unfamiliar with veil of maya stuff, but this guy has blown me away haha he's got TALENT
how can anyone possibly not like this video...
one of the best guitarist's of this generation
This is such a great cover!
I love how he always plays everything like 20% faster than it is on the album recording, in the intro the song slows down so much when it switches from him playing it and the album version :P
5:15 Its Not Safe To Swim Today opening riff chord??
He's probably the craziest guitarist in the riffing composition but his stuff sound SO damn good!! :O
He's my favorite!!
dude picks so angrily...I LOVE IT!!!
Saw them live last night, seriously skilled guitarist, and he seems to think like I do which is cool.
Such a unique style.
@EntropicJoey also, veil of maya is one of my biggest inspirations as well.
one of the most impressive metal riffing i've ever seen. his style reminds me of muhammed suicmez (necrophagist) and fredrik thordendal (meshuggah)
the way hes moving across the fret board is insane
@decimater75 You can't copyright chords, nor progressions. Only melodies, read up before you start saying people rip each other off. Other artists use it all the time, it may not be the most creative thing, but if it helps the music flow why not.
wow that may be one of the nicest fretboards ive ever seen
He's so good. My gosh.
It's just polyrhythmic playing more than anything else, I too have seen them live and they were just insane!
DELIVER MEEEEEEEE
Best song to ever exist.
This guy is an amazing guitarist...
wow this is cool (i just stumbled upon this band i like his guitar work)
In bars 28-33 (and the same thing in 36-41) there's a quarter note missing; it could be added to the last bar (becoming a 5/4 bar), but I think it is easier to have two bars of 4, and "anticipate" the following riff. Sorry for my bad english :-)
Im way more into straight death/tech death, don't like going into the core side of metal, yet these guys are amazing. He's an amazing and extremely underrated guitar player.
His hand picking is amazing for sure...
Listening to just the guitar alone reminds me of After The Burial!
This is batshit crazy riff composition, brilliant guitarist
wow those are very creative metal riffings ..
