    I’ve always been surprised at how cleanly he plays with his over-expressive fretting hand. You usually see people playing technical shit that make it look easy, super smooth, making minute and efficient movement. Marc makes sure you know that it looks difficult. Because it is.

    Marc has long ass fingers, which blessed him with the ability to write crazy shit like this with insane stretches. These old songs are absolute classics, and still amazing to this day. This and It's Not Safe to Swim blew my mind when I first heard them.

      Same! I feel like most metal today is too dumbed down and lacking imagination. Whereas in here it's evident that every note has been carefully selected and timed to balance groove and excitement by surprise

      Common Man’s Collapse was definitely way ahead of its time. Same as Exoplanet (Contortionist) and Colors (BTBAM), but you’ve gotta let em grow and respect the growth. No prog metal band is gonna stay stagnant for more than 2 albums. It’s the whole point of the genre. Gotta be progressive.

      Exactly dude. If only all their albums could be as timeless as the common man's collapse. I saw them live in des Moines when this was the only album they had released and when they played this song, everyone went nuts. All 50 of us. Still one of the best shows I've ever been to.

    I remember the first time I heard vom was live and I was like “what is this like Persian influenced progressive metalcore”. It didn’t makes sense. And his looping. From not having any reference point to seeing it live was like an acid trip. I walked out of the show in probably 2007 like “why do all the hardcore kids wear their merch” and just dove in.

      Are you talking about the part at 1:37? It sounds like a really fast tremolo/volume ducking effect, like it mutes the string or close to it every 16th note. Or something like that. Then probably some EQ or filter (probably a wah) to take off top end, maybe a neck humbucker too. Hopefully that points you in the general direction!

    Not a fan of their new stuff but it’s hard to deny Marc has one of the most unique playing styles in heavy music. I can’t really think of anyone else that plays like him, even in that djent genre. Yes you have rhythmic breakdowns similar to what he does but just look at the chords he uses and comes up with (although I couldn’t speak to regarding anything past “id”). Nothing like it out there though

    Then I realised the gallops are on the 1st fret instead of the open string and now I know it's impossible.
