  • This is a technical overview of the new and improved Gen14 version of one of Dell’s most popular workhorse servers, the Dell EMC PowerEdge R740xd. The R740xd is one of Dell EMC’s most popular chassis configurations for its performance and scalability. It features a 2U, 2-socket chassis but packs more storage, memory, and NVMe options than The PowerEdge R740 and can adapt to a variety of workloads including software-defined storage, use as a big data server, data analytics, and as a data tier for service providers. What’s new? Support for up to 24 NVMe storage devices, support for up to six GPUs, enhanced security, improved management with iDRAC 9.0 with lifecycle controller, and the new Intel Xeon Scalable processors delivering 27% more cores and a 50% increase in bandwidth over the previous generation Xeon processors.

    Amazing video, only problem is this guy speak extremely fast and it is really hard for people who English is not their first language. Thanks

      Sorry about that… By the way, you can slow down the actual video playback by clicking the settings gear thing in the lower right corner of the video, then change the payback speed. It's almost normal at .75!

    Please, review the enter servers from Dell, like the T130 and T330.

    With MVNe drives, what are the Controller options? I was told that there is no way to connect MVNe drivers with RAID controllers. They are connected to PCIe UCEA-200 (PCIe Extender). Also, i was told that any RAID controller even 740P will only slow down MVNe drives. But how can i build RAID 10 then? S140 i believe is super slow but this is an integrated option.

      Hi Aleksei, The only option you have for NVMe is the integrated S140 controller. You can build RAID 10 with the S140. Check out the User Guide for the Dell S140 Controller here starting on page 7.

      If boot time is a consideration try installing one of the M.2 BOSS cards to boot your system. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

    Those cpus in the server remind of intel’s xeon phi cpus very expensive

    • @Itcreations-LA
      @Itcreations-LA  6 років тому +1

      These are even more expensive than Xeon Phi.

    what's the noise level under load and idle?

    • @Itcreations-LA
      @Itcreations-LA  6 років тому +3

      Hi Nitin Gupta, our guys in production who assemble these systems all the time said it is no louder, or quieter, than the R730/R730xd. Another guy said the noise level was between 50-100 decibels. in other words, they can be quite loud under load - low-level banshee scream. However, keep in mind this is a rack mount system and is not intended for the front office. It is designed to reside in a standard rack enclosure, usually in a dedicated room not only for security but to ensure temperature control. As these servers do generate a lot of heat, many server rooms also have separate environmental controls to maintain a consistent temperature so the equipment does not overheat. If you want something for the front office that's quiet, I would suggest a tower server, which is designed for use in the front office. For something approaching the performance of the R740XD you might look at the T640 tower, which, now that I checked, it looks like you already have (and commented, thank you very much!). Thanks for watching!

      Unfortunately T640 does not support GPU in tower configuration, so I'm checking which rack server would be quiet enough to be place desk side. Looks like none of rack servers fit the bill, and T640 lacks in GPU front. Would you know noise levels of T640 in rack configuration with GPU installed. I don't (yet) own a T640.

      HI Nitin, have you looked at the HPE ML350 Gen9? There is a Gen10 version out but we don't have that one yet. The ML350 Gen9 and Gen10 both support GPUs and accelerators and are designed for the front office, so low sound transmission. Here are a few links, one to our landing page where you can get the user guide and quick specs in the documentation section, and the other to our video describing the features. www.itcreations.com/hp/HP-ProLiant-ML350-Gen9-Server.asp Video: ua-cam.com/video/vdamv56LQio/v-deo.html
      Here's a link to the eGen10 version we should be getting in very soon, like in a month or two: www.hpe.com/us/en/product-catalog/servers/proliant-servers/pip.hpe-proliant-ml350-gen10-server.1010192786.html
      Of course, you could always go with a workstation… We are now using the Z8 G4 for our video production and I cannot hear a whisper from that thing, and it's just 10 feet away. Better yet give us a call and talk to one of our sales guys they know their stuff: 800-237-0402 ask for Gal.

    Still require Dell branded/ Certified HDD's??

    • @Itcreations-LA
      @Itcreations-LA  5 років тому +1

      Hi Pat, no need for Dell branded drives. Just enterprise drives are fine, and you should have no problems using hardware from other manufacturers. We use Dell branded everything when doing a Dell videos, same for other manufacturer videos, but other manufacturer' hardware is supported. I think I said that like three times now-and I already had my coffee! Not looking good for the rest of the day… Thanks for watching!

      @@Itcreations-LA Our older servers utilizing non-Dell branded HDD's cannot use Dell OM to check the status of the drives. Would this still be true? I work for a GOV entity and my management is making me spec out SuperMicro Servers. I am not a fan but over time, when our PERC controllers can only report on Dell-branded drives, it gets a little expensive buying spares that are hard to find. The SuperMicro servers and the Dell 740's are around the same price without drives. How do I get my management out of that "Dell servers require Dell drives" mindset? Do you guys quote to GOV entities?

    • @Itcreations-LA
      @Itcreations-LA  5 років тому

      Hi@@patharrison1831
      Dell will say that you need to use on ly Dell branded drives in their servers but so will HPE and lenovo. We quote to gov't, but they typically require brand new for warranty/contract purposes, so we usually don't quote Dells.
      Newer servers like the Dell R740 should be fine with non-Dell branded drives like SSDs from Intel, HDDs from Seagate, Western Digital, whatever. There may, and i stress may be some incompatibility issues with some obscure drive types. Your system will create an error message because it will recognize that the drive is not Dell but they should still work. OM should also work fine with these other drives in that OM is designed to work with third-party hardware. That said, we do have both new Dell servers and storage plus we have partnered with Supermicro for great pricing on those products. We have great pricing on Supermicro but it will take time to create new pages for our site so call or send an email if you are interested in Supermicro. If you don't see what you are looking for contact our sales dept. at sales@itcreatons.com they know the hardware. Thanks for watching!
