so, interesting history lesson, the cleveland spiders were so bad because in 1898 the owner acquired another franchise and had the idea "if I split my talent between two team i'll have two middle-of-the road teams, but if i take all the good players on /this/ team and move them over /here/, sure the spiders would suck but my other team will really kick ass!" Cy Young was one that got transferred off of the Spiders to St. Louis, and he led the team in WAR that year. The next year the owners all decided that owning two teams was a conflict of interest and they dissolved the Spiders. The next franchise to make a move to Cleveland was the **checks notes** Grand Rapids Furniture Makers.
Came down here to comment the same. I would also not have thought of Nichols (I had no idea what team he played for) so Warren Spahn should be the automatic pick for the Braves. Besides recency bias, part of it has to do with people forgetting the Milwaukee/Boston era of the franchise. Come to think of it, did these guys pick Chipper Jones over Hank Aaron? That would be roughly the offensive equivalent.
I have a video idea The Most Mid Draft Draft single seasons of guys who were as close as possible to 0 WAR, minimum 100 games played that season Let's give The Replaceables some shine

I always love when my namesake, Dave Smoke Stewart gets picked. Never thought his war with the A’s was that low though. I know he played for a lot of teams, but his Oakland and Toronto years are the ones I remember from when I first learned about him as a little kid.
Stewart is an easy one to fool people though. He (along with Orel Hershiser) is sort of the Madison Bumgarner of his era: really well-known and well-respected because he went beast mode in the postseason. It skews the memory of his career. I remember looking him up just a few years ago because I wanted to see what his Hall of Fame credentials looked like. To my surprise, a 100 ERA+ and a higher WHIP than I ever would have remembered. But in the playoffs? Few pitchers I'd rather have out there. Also, one of the nicer guys I've ever met from that era. He came out to do a little charity game for us along with a bunch of fellow A's and Giants alums. The one thing that strikes you is that his voice does not match his appearance. SPOILERS FOR THE END OF THE VIDEO When Lucas said that Jolly Needed 32.4 WAR in order to get second, he had only the Marlins, the Rockies, the Brewers, and the Rangers left. The first three teams there didn't have ANYONE that would have worked, the top for the Marlins is Josh Johnson with 25.8, top for the Rockies is Ubaldo Jimenez with 18.9, and top for the Brewers is Teddy Higuera with 30.3. The ONLY player that would have gotten him the victory is the number 1 Texas Rangers WAR leader, Charlie Hough with 32.6.
I've got an idea for another one of these episodes, but with a twist; Who can select the WORST starting lineup? Basically, choose whatever stat to focus on (home runs, steals, ERA, etc.), but only players with "X" amount of starts or AB's in the chosen season. I feel like it would make for a great series of episodes!
Jomboy really needs a Dodgers fan in the office because the 2nd largest Market having zero representation is kinda getting weird to see in all these videos. Just someone to defend the guy with the lowest ERA in the live ball era please, thanks! Thank you Lucas for trying your best though
Seems to be some confusion on this, but the Cleveland Spiders did not become the team we now know as the Cleveland Guardians. The Cleveland Spiders folded at the turn of the 20th century. The team we know as the Cleveland Guardians would have only been in existence for about 3 years and were going by the name the Grand Rapids Furniture Makers and the time of the Spider’s folding.
Kid Nichols is the 2nd best answer in this game, and who's honesty heard of him apart from people that stare at the all-time WAR pitcher leaderboard? I wonder if changing it to post integration makes it better/more fair. As somebody who's watched Ken Burns Baseball a lot, I do kinda like the pulls from over a century ago but it's really hard to compare WAR to then.
This game ABSOLUTELY favors the old-timers, who a) more likely played for one team, and b) had huge volume of games/innings/etc. The Walter Johnsons, Cy Youngs and Christy Mathewsos of the baseball world routinely put up double-digit seasons in their day, while Greg Maddux - as great as he was - never broke 10 in a single year.
Im not surprised he wasnt mentioned because i also wouldnt have known the team, but i was hoping for a gentleman's hurler aka Christy Mathewson purely because i know he was good and he also refused to pitch on Sundays because he was super religious which is one of the most badass things ever. Just telling your manager/owner no matter the situation that i am NOT pitching on Sunday is so boss.
The Cleveland Spiders are not associated with any current franchise, right? They were contracted by the league. While the Guardians are also located in Cleveland and came about after the Spiders ceased operations, there is no relationship between the franchises as far as I am aware. In fact when the Spiders folded in 1899 the Guardians were already playing as a minor league team for four seasons as the Columbus Senators (renamed from Columbus Buckeyes). So picking a player from one franchise should not eliminate a selection from the other.
My list: Roy Halladay (Blue Jays) Greg Maddux (Braves) Bob Gibson (Cardinals) Clayton Kershaw (Dodgers) Christy Mathewson (Giants) Tom Seaver (Mets) Walter Johnson (Senators/Twins) Jim Palmer (Orioles) Cy Young (Red Sox) Feeling incredible sicko getting a 735.4
